And they’re off! Every year, the first Saturday in May marks “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” the annual Kentucky Derby. Tidbits offers some fascinating facts about the “Run for the Roses,” a contest for three-year-old thoroughbred horses held every year since 1875. ● Construction on the racetrack now known as Churchill Downs was begun in Louisville, Kentucky in 1874. It was the brainstorm of Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of William Clark of the Lewis and Clark expedition.

Clark leased 80 acres of land from his uncles John and Henry Churchill, and raised $32,000 for constructions costs by selling membership subscriptions to the track for $100 each. ● The first Kentucky Derby was held in May of 1875 before a crowd of 10,000 spectators.

Fifteen three-year-old thoroughbreds pounded around the track and the contest was won by a chestnut named Aristides. The original race was 1.5 miles (2.41 km), compared to today’s 1.25 miles (2.01 km). Aristides accomplished the distance in just under 2:38. In 1896 it was determined that 1.5 miles was too long a distance for three-year-old horses so early in the spring, and the race length was shortened. turn the page for more!

KENTUCKY DERBY (continued) ● When race fans showed up for the 1895 event, they were met by a brand-new grandstand featuring the Twin Spires. A 24-yearold draftsman designed the Spires, which have become a familiar landmark to the Derby crowd. ● At a party hosted by a socialite following the 1883 Derby, all the ladies were presented with roses. Track founder Meriwether Lewis Clark was in attendance and it’s believed he conceived the idea of declaring the rose the race’s official flower from that experience. But it wasn’t until 1896 that a bouquet of pink and white roses was first presented to the winner, and it was 1932 before the garland of roses we see today was introduced. The term “Run for the Roses” was coined by a sports columnist in 1925. The blanket of roses bestowed upon the owner of the winning horse is composed of more than 500 red roses sewn onto a green satin backing. In addition, the jockey receives 60 long-stemmed roses wrapped in 10 yards of ribbon. Owners frequently have the garland of roses freeze-dried to preserve it, and some even have a flower dipped in silver in commemoration of the win. ● The two-minute mark has only been broken three times in Derby history, the first time in 1973 by the famed Secretariat. Nicknamed “Big Red,” the chestnut finished the course in 1:59.40, a record that still holds today as the fastest time ever. The second horse to finish in under two minutes was just a length and a half behind Secretariat. Sham, who was Secretariat’s dark brown half-cousin, had hit his face on the starting gate and knocked out a tooth. Although he bled severely throughout the race, Sham came in about one-fifth of a second behind the winner.

The Derby was without an under-two-minute winner until 2001 when Monarchos finished in 1:59.97.

● On May 8, 1884, Harry S Truman is born in Lamar, Mo. Upon President Franklin Roosevelt's death in 1945, Truman became the 33rd president of the United States. After four months in office, Truman authorized the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan, believing it ultimately saved American and Japanese lives by forcing Japan to surrender. ● On May 12, 1932, the body of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh's baby is found more than two months after he was kidnapped from his family's New Jersey mansion. After numerous ransom notes, the baby was found less than a mile from the home. He had been killed the night of the kidnapping. ● On May 11, 1947, the B.F. Goodrich Company of Akron, Ohio, announces it has developed a tubeless tire. The disadvantage of the old inner tube design was that if the inner tube failed, the tire would blow out immediately, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. ● On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks the fourminute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. ● On May 7, 1960, Leonid Brezhnev, one of Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev's most trusted proteges, is selected as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet -- the Soviet equivalent to the presidency.

Brezhnev took control of the USSR in 1964 when Khrushchev was removed from power. ● On May 9, 1971, the last original episode of the sitcom "The Honeymooners," starring Jackie Gleason, airs. Despite its brief life as a traditional sitcom, "The Honeymooners" remains one of the most memorable TV comedies of all time, rivaled only by "I Love Lucy." ● On May 10, 1994, in South Africa, Nelson Mandela is sworn in as the first black president of South Africa.

In his inaugural address, Mandela, who spent 27 years of his life as a political prisoner of the South African government, declared that "the time for the healing of the wounds has come."

Creating 'That' Dog DEAR PAW'S CORNER: One thing I've dreamed about with owning a dog is being able to bring him to coffee shops, markets, parks, you name it, and have him be calm and relaxed. You know the type: the big shaggy dog leashed to a lamppost being petted by neighborhood kids, with no problems. Well, my puppy is a good-natured Lab mix, but a little hyper. Will "Raven" ever be that dog? -- Joe K., Portland, Maine DEAR JOE: As long as you make it a priority to train Raven well in basic obedience both on and off the leash, socialize him to humans, children and other dogs, you have a very good chance of having "that" dog ... that cool city pooch you can take almost anywhere.

Strike up a conversation with other dog owners who have a well-behaved pet with them, and find out how they achieved it. Search for puppy training or socialization groups in your area, through local papers or on websites

like Meetup.com. If you're having trouble getting Raven to follow commands or be calm on the leash, look into group or private dog obedience training.

If Raven is still young and hasn't had all his initial shots yet, avoid visiting dog parks until the vet says it's safe to do so.

Don't venture out too far or too long: Gradually increase your walks around the city, so that he looks forward to exploring without getting exhausted or stressed. While you're out, check with shops and cafes that you pass to find out which ones are pet-friendly and which ones aren't.

Gather your green beans into bundles and wrap them together with a piece of bacon. Lay on a cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake at 350⁰ for 10-15 minutes until the bacon is crisp. The bacon flavor will melt into the green beans and they’ll come running for more.

KENTUCKY DERBY (continued) ● During the early 1900’s, owners of Derby-winning horses began sending their thoroughbreds to Maryland’s Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes in New York. Although it wasn’t officially called the “Triple Crown” until 1930, the first winner of all three races was in 1919, a chestnut named Sir Barton. There have only been 11 Triple Crown winners, including Secretariat, who took the prize after a 25-year drought, setting records in all three races. There were back-to-back Triple Crown winners in 1977 (Seattle Slew) and Affirmed in 1978. There hasn’t been one since. ● On those occasions when two or more horses are in a dead heat and it’s impossible to see which crossed the line first, a “photo finish” is needed to determine the winner. The first time this was used at the Kentucky Derby was in 1947, when a photo at the finish line concluded that Jet Pilot was the winning horse. ● For almost 100 years, the mint julep has been the traditional beverage of the Derby.

Each year, 120,000 juleps are served on Derby Weekend at Churchill Downs, requiring more than 10,000 bottles of Early Times Kentucky Whiskey, 1,000 lbs. (454 kg) of fresh mint, and 60,000 lbs. (27,215 kg) of ice. Spectators can expect a price of $11 per glass. Along with the juleps, a thick stew called Burgoo is traditionally served, a concoction of a mixture of meats, including pork, beef, chicken, and mutton, along with vegetables and barbecue sauce. ● In 1932, an 18-year-old jockey named Eugene James rode Burgoo King to victory at both the Derby and the Preakness. Sadly, just a year later, the young athlete drowned in Lake Michigan.

Mushroom and Snap Pea Salad The mushrooms in this spring salad can be marinated up to 4 hours ahead of assembly. The easy homemade dressing and marinade combines shallots, thyme, bay leaf and sherry vinegar.

2 boxes (10 ounces each) sliced mushrooms 2 shallots, thinly sliced 2 sprigs fresh thyme 1 bay leaf 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons sherry vinegar Salt Pepper 1 pound sugar snap peas 1 large (8 ounces) bunch frisee (curly endive), cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 cup packed fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped 2 tablespoons (pignoli) pine nuts, toasted

1. Place mushrooms in large bowl. In 2-quart saucepan, combine shallots, thyme, bay leaf and 1/3 cup oil. Heat on medium 2 to 3 minutes or until shallots are just tender.

Pour over mushrooms and immediately stir until wellmixed. Stir in 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper. Cover and let stand at room temperature 1 hour, or refrigerate up to 4 hours.

2. Heat covered 4-quart saucepan of water to boiling on high. Meanwhile, remove and discard strings from snap peas. Add snap peas and 1/2 teaspoon salt to boiling water. Cook, uncovered, 2 minutes or until crisp-tender.

Drain and immediately rinse with cold water until cool; drain again.

3. In large bowl, toss frisee, parsley and snap peas with remaining 2 tablespoons vinegar and 1 tablespoon oil.

Divide among salad plates. Remove and discard thyme and bay leaf from mushrooms; divide mushrooms and sherry dressing among frisee plates. Sprinkle with toasted pine nuts to serve. Serves 8. ● Each serving: About 160 calories, 12g total fat (2g saturated), 0mg cholesterol, 120mg sodium, 10g total carbs, 4g dietary fiber, 5g protein.

● Doubtless you've heard of India's Taj Mahal, but did you know that there is a tourist attraction in America that is so grand, it is popularly known as the Taj Mahal of the West? In 1968, a group of Hare Krishnas founded the New Vrindaban Community near Wheeling, W.Va. Though they began on 100 acres with no electricity or running water, the community now covers more than 1,200 acres and features Prabhupada's Palace of Gold, an ornate edifice of gold, marble and hand-carved teakwood. The award-winning rose garden alone is said to be worth a trip. ● If you're a dog lover, you might have used your beloved pet as a foot warmer from time to time. This is by no means a modern practice; the Aztecs were fond of a certain breed of small, hairless dogs to accomplish the task. ● Despite popular opinion, the dictator Napoleon was not particularly short. Pensive was the sire of Ponder and both horses won the Derby with the exact same time, 2:04.20. Ponder went on to sire the 1956 Derby winner, Needles. ● Until 2005, only the first four finishers received a share of the Derby’s purse money. The rules were then changed to award a potion to the fifthplace winner as well. ● The Derby has had a number of notable firsts. It was broadcast live on the radio for the first time in 1925, with the first national television coverage occurring in 1952. The size of the purse topped the $100,000 mark for the first time in 1954. (This year, the purse will be $2,180,000, with $1,240,000 of that amount awarded to the winner.) In 1968, Dancer’s Image became the first winner to be disqualified after traces of drugs were found in its system. The Derby’s first woman jockey was Diane Crump who rode Phantom in 1970. Diane came in 15th out of 17.

Jockeys were allowed to wear advertising logos on their silks for the first time in 2004. ● More than 165,000 people attended the 2012 Kentucky Derby, setting an attendance record. Tickets can be had for as little as $80 for general admission or as much as $5,000.

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD: ROSA PARKS Often referred to as “The Mother of the ModernDay Civil Rights Movement,” Rosa Parks was one of the most influential leaders in AfricanAmerican history. Let’s learn more about this courageous woman who championed the cause for desegregation. ● Born in Alabama to a carpenter father and a teacher mother, Rosa was a sickly child who was raised on her grandparents’ farm following the separation of her parents. Home-schooled until the age of 11, Rosa then attended the Industrial School for Girls in Montgomery. At age 21, she married a barber named Raymond Parks, and finished her uncompleted high school diploma. ● Segregation in the South called for separate restrooms, drinking fountains, and seating areas on public transportation. The first four rows of city buses were “Whites Only,” with blacks forced to sit at the very back. If the bus was full when a white person boarded the bus, blacks were made to move, stand, or get off the bus. Blacks were also not allowed to sit across the aisle from a white person, and had to enter the bus from the back so as not to walk past a white at the front. ● When Rosa landed a job at a local department store, she rode the city bus to and from work each day. On a December day in 1955, as she was headed for home, she boarded the bus and took a seat in the 11th row, the first row of the section reserved for blacks. The bus filled up and three whites were standing. The driver demanded that four black people give up their seats. Three black men moved, but Rosa slid over to the window seat, refusing to surrender her place.

The ironic part was that she had not technically broken any law. The law in place for over 50 years stated that no passenger could be forced to give up a seat or stand on a crowded bus. Her 30-minute trial declared her guilty, penalizing her with $14 in fines and court costs. ● Within four days, a boycott of Montgomery’s city buses was in place, organized in part by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who declared, “…it is more honorable to walk in dignity than ride in humiliation.” More than 90% of the city’s black residents refused to ride the buses. Carpools were set up, with those who owned vehicles volunteering their services.

Because 75% of bus customers were black, the finances of the public bus companies plunged.

Yet it still took 381 days for agreement to be reached on the end of segregation. ● Rosa later moved to Detroit, where she worked for a U.S. Congressman until age 75.

In 1992, she published her autobiography. Rosa was the recipient of 20+ honorary doctorates from universities around the world. She was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon a civilian. Arcaro is also the record-holder for the most American classic race wins, and the only rider to win the Triple Crown twice. He triumphed in 17 Triple Crown races, including the five Derbys, and six each in the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. As a small youth, rejection for a spot on the baseball team pushed him to excel in a different area. He stood just 5’2” (1.6 m) when fully grown. At the 1959 Belmont Stakes, Eddie seemed destined for his 7th win, but his horse fell and Eddie was thrown into a large puddle of water and was narrowly saved from drowning. Riding helmets had very recently been introduced to the sport and Arcaro claimed his had saved his life. His lifetime record was 4,779 wins. ● Bill Hartack won his first Kentucky Derby in 1957 at age 24. He was favored to win the next year, but just two weeks before the Derby, he broke his leg and another jockey rode the horse Tim Tam, who won the race. Hartack was the nation’s leading jockey four different times, and was the first to attain $3 million purse winnings in a year.

JUST JOCKEYS (continued) ● Standing just 4’11” (1.5m) tall and weight 96 lbs. (43.5 kg), Willie Shoemaker was just 17 when he rode a horse in a race for the first time. Although he finished fifth in that first race, by his third race, he was in the winner’s circle. By week two, he had won seven races. He won his first Kentucky Derby in 1955 at age 23, and his second four years later. It would be six years before his next Churchill Downs victory, but Willie wasn’t finished yet. Twenty-one years later in 1986, Shoemaker won his fourth and final Derby at age 54, making him the oldest Derby winner in history. Although he had won 11 Triple Crown races over the course of four different decades – four Derbys, five Belmont Stakes, and three Preakness Stakes – he never achieved the Crown itself. He set a world record with 8,833 winning races, and accomplished the amazing feat of winning six races in one day, six different times in his career. Shoemaker retired in 1990 and tragedy struck just one year later when his vehicle plunged off a 50-foot embankment, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. He still managed to succeed as a horse trainer until 1997.

Spinal Stenosis Often Cause of Back Pain

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: You have no idea how painful spinal stenosis is. Only oxycodone works. My doctor is afraid that I will become addicted. I am 75. I would rather die an addict than a person in constant pain. A surgeon told me it was too dangerous to operate unless I am in constant pain. Can you help?

-- B.A. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I read your article on spinal stenosis. I am 82, in good health, but plagued with back pain. My daughter, a nurse at a university hospital, had me see a neurosurgeon there. He suggested a microsurgical procedure that took about three hours. I was discharged with a small bandage. I am now more than two months post-op, and my back feels better than it has in years. People with spinal stenosis should consider this operation. -- M.R. ANSWER: Spinal stenosis is one of the most frequent causes of back pain. The spinal cord is an extension of the brain. It runs from the neck to the lower back. It's only as thick as your little finger. An eraser dropped from 12 inches onto it would smash it beyond repair.

It, therefore, needs protection. Nature has encased it in the back bones (vertebrae) through a tunnel that runs the length of the spinal column. Narrowing of the tunnel is called spinal stenosis.

The narrowed part compresses the spinal cord and is quite painful. The narrowing comes from bone spurs, arthritis changes or thickening of back ligaments.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My wife has taken blood pressure medicine for many years. She's now 66.

Her doctor put her on a new medicine that has her pressure at 125/65. It's never been that low before. Is that too low for someone her age? -- L.W. ANSWER: Does your wife complain of dizziness, especially upon standing up? If she doesn't, then her pressure isn't too low. Ideal blood pressure is lower than 120/80.

It's true older people don't always tolerate a sudden drop in their pressure, even though the pressure might be in the normal range. I don't consider your wife to be "older." You'd better not either.

M.R.'s suggestion of surgery bears consideration, especially his comments on microsurgery, where a halfinch incision allows the surgeon to spread back muscles and other tissues so the surgeon can home in on the area of involved stenosis. A hollow cylinder is inserted through the spread back tissues, and special instruments allow visualization of the area with the ability to remove the compression. It's something that B.A. ought to consider with the constant pain she endures.

More of Us Getting Knee Replacement For a growing number of us, it will become necessary at some point to have a knee replacement. A recently completed 20-year study, funded in part by the National Institute on Aging, shows the number of knee surgeries has steadily risen. More of us, it seems, are now walking pain-free.

But the news isn't all good, however. The study included 3.3 million participants who had a primary knee replacement and 300,000 who had a revision process, which is replacement of a previous implanted joint. Along the way, hospital stays have gotten shorter for recovery from the knee surgeries. This has caused higher complication rates as well as higher readmission rates, as we go back in the hospital when things go wrong.

Between 1991 and 2010, the number of total knee arthro-

plasty (TKA) procedures rose a whopping 162 percent.

The reason? There are more people likely to be considered as candidates for the surgery, more seniors in the population and more conditions that lead to osteoarthritis -- such as obesity.

Again the flipside: Hospital stays were cut from eight to four days for primary surgery, and from nine to five days for revision surgeries. This was no doubt due to insurers who want patients out of the hospital as quickly as possible to cut costs.

Hospital readmissions jumped from 4 percent to 5 percent for primary procedures, and from 6 percent to 9 percent for revisions.

Revisions caused more than double the readmission rates for wound infection, and a 100 percent increase for hemorrhage and heart attack.

There's one thing to be said for following a good diet: If we keep our weight down and stay out of the obese category, we might be able to avoid needing knee surgery.

More than 30 percent of veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are being prescribed a drug called benzodiazepine, which is a sedative, contrary to the Department of Veterans Affairs own PTSD guidelines. Benzodiazepine covers drugs such as Valium and Xanax, often used to help with insomnia and anxiety.

The problem, says Dr. Nancy Bernardy, clinical psychologist with the VA's National Center for PTSD, is that the drug can be harmful. She writes in the PTSD Research Quarterly that the typical PTSD symptoms are not handled by benzodiazepine and that "mounting evidence suggests that the long-term harms imposed by benzodiazepine use outweigh any short-term symptomatic benefits in patients with PTSD." Additionally, her report talks of withdrawal symptoms and risk of tolerance after very limited use.

The VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline "Management of Post-Traumatic Stress," dated 2010, "Strongly recommends against the use of benzodiazepines to prevent the development of ASD or PTSD." On the page of Balance of Benefit and Harm, benzodiazepine is noted with an asterisk that says "Potential harm." In spite of this, prescription levels are about 30 percent.

Short-term prescriptions (two to four weeks) can be beneficial in terms of improved sleep, but at that point the patient naturally doesn't want to give up the medication, which actually interferes with PTSD therapies. In one test, researchers compared sleep results between benzodiazepine and a placebo -- and found no difference.

There are three groups for which benzodiazepine prescription is very much contraindicated: veterans with PTSD and substance abuse disorder, veterans with mild traumatic brain injury, and veterans who take opiates for chronic pain.

Page 13 Help Wanted: Preschoolers When kids are young, learning how to do a chore can represent a milestone accomplishment. "Look what I did, Mom!" I put the cereal box back in the cupboard by myself!" No sooner do you affirm their joy, then you notice a trail of little cereal "O's" marking the route from the table to the shelf. Signs of growing up!

Setting the table is another chore that is one fun challenge, but it requires lots of practice. It can get tricky; just ask my husband! At first, the fork might rest diagonally across the plate. The spoon might lie upside down on the left, and the napkin, unfolded, might rest half under (or half over) the plate.

So I came up with this table-setting placemat, to help kids along in the basics of setting the table. When you call out, "Who wants to set the table?" the kids will be eager to try out their new skill with real dishes, flatware and napkins.

Here's how to make the practice placemat: Cut out an oval or rectangle shape on a sheet of tag board or a foam sheet. Or you may use a regular, plain-colored plastic placemat. Cut out a 10-inch circle from another sheet to serve as the plate. (A real plate makes an easy pattern). Your kids might think it's fun to use their markers to design a border on the plate. Draw a spoon, knife, fork and napkin, and cut those shapes out.

Put Velcro squares on the placemat at the appropriate places matching the pieces on the backs of all your cutouts. Depending on how you like to set the table, you might want to add a piece of Velcro to the top of the napkin for the placement of the fork.

Tip: Practice table-setting as part of pretend tea time.
