This week, in commemoration of National Dog Week, Tidbits is going to the dogs! Let’s look at some unusual breeds and random facts about “man’s best friend.”

• We’ve been celebrating National Dog Week since 1928 when Captain Will Judy, a noted dog judge, founded the week of tribute. Judy, a decorated World War I veteran, left behind a law practice to establish his own publishing house in order to publish his war diary, essays, and reference books about his life’s passion, dogs. He authored The Dog Encyclopedia and other works about breeding, training, and show dogs, as well as publishing Dog World magazine.

• It’s believed that the oldest domesticated dog breed is the Saluki, which has its origins in ancient Egypt around 330 B.C. They were kept as royal pets and mummified after death and buried alongside Pharaohs. They are still used as hunting dogs by the nobles in the Middle East.

• What are folks naming their dogs these days?

The most popular names for males dogs are Max, Buddy, and Rocky, while the top choices for female dogs are Bella, Molly, and Lucy. Other favorites are Jake, Charlie, Maggie, and Daisy. turn the page for more!

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE (continued): • Ever wonder where the term “man’s best friend” originated? U.S. Senator George Graham Vest was a small-town Missouri lawyer in 1870 when he was hired to represent a farmer suing a man for killing his best hunting dog, Old Drum. Vest offered a heart-warming and poignant closing argument to the jury, one so powerful it brought tears to the eyes of the jurors. In part, Vest declared, “The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful…the one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.” In 1948, the community of Warrenburg, Missouri, had the “Tribute to the American Dog” speech inscribed on a bronze statue of Vest and Old Drum. Historians consider it one of the world’s great speeches.

• Since 1905, the American Kennel Club has compiled statistics on what our favorite breeds are. For 30 years, the Boston terrier ranked in either first or second place. When German Shepherd Rin-Tin-Tin gained popularity in silent films, that breed took over the lead as most popular. The original Rin-Tin-Tin was rescued from a World War I battlefield by an American soldier who brought him back to the U.S., where the canine appeared in 27 Hollywood films.

• Cocker spaniels became the most popular breed in 1936 and held the honor for the next 16 years, when the Beagle gained the title. In 1960, poodles were the top dog and reigned for a record 22 years. Since 1991, the Labrador Retriever has been in first place, followed by German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers.

The Lab is highly trainable and is frequently used for search and rescue purposes, as guide dogs for the blind, and on narcotics detection teams.

Storm-Proofing Anxious Pets

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Both my dogs and my cat are terrified by thunderstorms, and they run, hide under furniture, and howl and yowl until the storm passes. How can I stop this behavior? Ð Frustrated in Fort Myers DEAR FRUSTRATED: Fear and anxiety during storms is a very common issue among dogs and cats, and not one that can be easily or fully resolved.

However, there are steps you can take to ease their fear.

Keep an eye on weather forecasts: note if a storm is forecast, and what time it’s likely to reach your area.

About 30 minutes to an hour before a storm strikes (or as soon as possible ahead of the storm), place your pets in a designated Òsafe roomÓ -one that has their bedding, toys, water and no large

furniture. If possible, it shouldn’t have a window; if it does, put up heavy curtains to block the light from lightning flashes, and add weather stripping to reduce rattling. (A closet or bathroom may work, too.)

For the first few storms, sit in the room with them. Be very calm, and speak in a calm voice.

Cuddle with your pets, feed them a few treats if they don’t whine, and if they show interest in their toys, play with them.

Once they’re less fearful using the safe room, reduce the time you spend with them during storms.

Give them a treat when the storm is over.

Don’t treat storm-related anxiety as a disciplinary issue. It’s an issue of your pets needing to feel secure from external threats. If the method above doesn’t lessen the issue, speak to their veterinarian about other ways to ease their anxiety.

OPINION--I’m not quite sure where 1969 stands in history, but I know it has to rank up there as far as how improbable it truly was.

Broadway Joe Namath led the underdog New York Jets to win in Super Bowl III, the first artificial heart was implanted in a human, we celebrated Neil Armstrong and the Miracle Mets.

There was a certain ying and yang...it was the year that John and Yoko became a couple.

This month, we will also pay homage to a little gathering held in upstate New York in 1969, Woodstock. That’s right, you’re not tripping and your math is not off. This year actually marks the 45th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival.

Thirty-two bands were set to perform, only one, Iron Butterfly, didn’t make the show. Joni Mitchell was asked to perform but decided to stay behind to appear on late night television.

She did make up for this by writing the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hit, “Woodstock” after missing the concert to appear with Dick.

Whole New York State thruway was shut down due to the massive crowd.

In the crowd of 400,000 plus, there were no reported acts of violence and two births were reported; even though to this day no one has come forward claiming to be a Woodstock baby.

Woodstock will, on its’ 45th anniversary, be regaled as the greatest rock’n’roll concert ever.

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE (continued): • Although the collie has never made it to the Number One spot in popularity, its status took a huge leap during the 1940s after the release of the hit film Lassie Come Home, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall. It maintained the rank of third for several years, aided by the long-running Lassie television series. The collie now places 35th. Likewise, the 1962 movie Big Red about an Irish setter vaulted that breed into 3rd place for a time, but it now ranks #72.

• For city folks and apartment dwellers, small dogs are the most popular, with the Yorkshire terrier leading the pack, followed by the poodle, dachshund, and Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu originated in China, and was once the prized pet of that country’s royalty during the Ming Dynasty. It weighs between 11 and 16 lbs. (5 to 7.25 kg) and stands about 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) tall.

It’s no surprise that the Chihuahua is the smallest breed. This breed’s owners can expect their dog to weigh under 6 pounds (2.7 kg) and measure between 6 and 9 inches (15.2 and 22.9 cm) tall and live between 10 and 18 years. The record holder of the title of world’s smallest dog is Milly, a Chihuahua living in Puerto Rico. She stands just 3.8 inches tall (9.65 cm) and weighs about a pound (0.5 kg).

Milly’s birth weight was less than an ounce and she fit nicely in a teaspoon.

• Close behind the Chihuahua in size is the Affenpinscher, a German breed belonging to the Pinscher-Schnauzer family, dating back to the 17th century. Its unusual name is the result of its odd monkey-like facial expression.

In the German language, Affen means “monkey,” and the breed has earned the nickname “monkey dog.” It weighs between 7 and 9 lbs. (3.2 – 4.1 kg) and stands less than a foot tall (30 cm).

(72.6 kg) in weight and 32 inches (0.8 m) in height, a Michigan Great Dane named Zeus, history’s tallest dog, measures 44 inches (1.1 m) tall and 7’ 4” (2.2 m) tall standing on his hind legs. Zeus weighs in at 150 lbs. (68 kg).

• If you’re looking for a quiet dog, there are several breeds that will fit the bill. A survey of 218 veterinarians tells us that, although very large in size, both the Newfoundland and the Great Dane don’t bark often. Of course, when they do, their barks are louder and deeper than any other dogs. Both of these breeds are calm and docile. The sleek greyhound is also a quiet dog, but its owner will have the dog’s strong will and defiance to deal with instead.

• So which dogs are the smartest? A panel of 122 vets were surveyed and their consensus was that the Golden Retriever is the fifth-smartest, followed by the Australian Shepherd in fourth place, the poodle in third, and the German Shepherd second. The majority ranked the Border Collie as the smartest breed.

• About 4.5 million people in the U.S. will be bitten by a dog this year. Nearly 850,000 of those will have to receive medical attention.

Out of that number, more than 30,000 will have to undergo some type of reconstructive surgery, while 15 to 20 victims of dog bites will die this year.

• Lots of people will probably agree with the statement by author Mark Twain, “The more I know about people, the more I like my dog.”

FAMOUS CANADIANS: RACHEL McADAMS The beautiful and talented actress Rachel McAdams hails from Ontario, growing up in the community of St. Thomas, raised by her nurse mother and truck driver father. She was a performer from an early age, but not in the acting arena. At age four, Rachel started figure skating and by age nine, was urged to move to Toronto to train as a pairs skater, an opportunity she turned down. As she tells it, “Getting up at 5:00 AM was a constant struggle. I used to get so nervous before competitions, I’d wake up in a cold sweat.” She still managed to endure competition until she was 18 when she hung up her skates to pursue an acting career.

Rachel entered Toronto’s York University, graduating from their theater program four years later. She landed some roles in Canadian television and films, receiving a Genie Award nomination (the Canadian equivalent of the Oscar) before moving on to Hollywood films.

The 2002 comedy The Hot Chick was the actress’ first U.S. film, but it was the 2004 popular teen movie Mean Girls that brought her notoriety, earning her two MTV Movie Awards. It was closely followed by The Notebook, which brought another MTV Award and cemented her box office star status.

After a series of successful films, Rachel took a well-deserved sabbatical, returning to Canada where she could, in her words, be “able to come home to a place where no one really cares what you do or who you are, and allow me a break from that life.” She did miss out on a few prize roles, such as the bond girl in Casino Royale and opposite Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible III.

• McAdams has always carefully prepared herself for her roles. Vintage Neckties Q: My grandpa was a traveling salesman throughout the 1930s and ‘40s.

He managed to accumulate more than 200 vintage neckties, and I inherited his collection a number of years ago. Some of the more interesting ones, at least to me, are the hand painted with Western themes. I am now in the process of downsizing and hate to just donate this collection to a charity. Online at www.lovemytidbits.com FAMOUS PHARMACISTS Since September 25 is World Pharmacists Day, it seems like a good time for Tidbits to investigate some of history’s famous pharmacists and their contributions.

• A young German pharmacist named Friedrich Serturner was the first to separate morphine from opium, a highly addictive medical and recreational narcotic and the main ingredient in laudanum. Serturner discovered morphine’s ability to relieve severe pain, and it was also initially used as a substitute for alcohol and opium dependency. Doctors then discovered that morphine’s continued use was even more addictive than the substances it was replacing.

• Following a vacation at his country summer home, Scottish biologist and pharmacist Alexander Fleming returned to his lab to find that a fungus had developed in a stack of Petri dishes that had contained a staphylococcus culture. The bacteria had died all around the area containing the mold, prompting him to perform experiments over the next 20 years showing that the mold prevented growth of staphylococci, even when diluted 800 times.

Fleming named his “mold juice” penicillin, and it was produced as an antibiotic that could cure numerous serious infectious diseases.

For his work in the field of medicine, Fleming was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize.

• Hubert Humphrey, U.S. Vice President from 1965 to 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, got his start as a pharmacist in his dad’s South Dakota pharmacy. He went on to serve as the mayor of Minneapolis and a U.S. Senator before being chosen as LBJ’s running mate. Humphrey ran for President in 1968, but was unsuccessful in his attempt to defeat Richard Nixon.

• Pharmacist Wilbur Scoville created the Scoville Organoleptic Test, a scale for measuring the hotness of chile peppers. A Scoville Unit is a measure of the chemical capsaicin found in hot peppers that is responsible for their heat.

In 1885, a young Waco, Texas pharmacist, Charles Alderton, was working at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store when he invented a recipe for a soft drink he called the Waco. The drug store owner renamed the drink after a friend of his, Dr. Charles Pepper.

After years of staying local, the beverage was introduced to the public at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, where 20 million people sampled it. The Dr Pepper Company is America’s oldest major manufacturer of soft drink concentrates.

• After being severely injured in the Civil War, Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton became addicted to morphine to ease his pain.

Wanting to find a cure for his addiction, in 1866, he began experimenting with opiumfree painkillers and came up with Pemberton’s French Wine Coca, proclaiming his popular invention a “nerve tonic” and “headache remedy.” When Atlanta enacted temperance laws, he was compelled to find an alcoholfree formula, with sugar replacing wine as the sweetener. His tonic became a refreshing soda fountain drink instead, known as Coca-Cola.

Unfortunately, when Pemberton passed away at age 57, he was still addicted to morphine.

• Pepsi-Cola also came from the efforts of a pharmacist, Caleb Bradham. In 1893, this New Bern, North Carolina pharmacist combined cola nut extract, vanilla, and “rare oils,” and called it Brad’s Drink. He invented it in an effort to help patrons improve their health, believing that his concoction aided digestion. Because the pepsin enzyme does in fact aid digestion, in 1898, Bradham renamed his beverage Pepsi-Cola, even though he didn’t add pepsin as an ingredient.

• Other favorite fountain drinks were brought to us by pharmacist Charles Hires, developer of Hires root beer, and James Vernor, who concocted ginger ale.

Heart Palpitations Due to Sleep Apnea?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 26 years old, 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weigh 290 pounds. About two years ago, I had chest pain and palpitations. I saw a cardiologist, who performed an echocardiogram.

It showed mild LVH and mild pulmonary hypertension. I had multiple EKGs, and my doctor says I have a clean bill of health. Are any of the symptoms I have dangerous, or am I overreacting?

-- J.A. ANSWER: Chest pain and palpitations -- such as pounding, racing or fluttering heart -- are common concerns that occasionally represent serious heart disease but often don’t. It’s estimated that the average person has 500 or so abnormal heartbeats a day, and these can be felt as palpitations. Chest pain should raise the concern for angina caused by heart blockages, but that would be extremely unusual in a 26-year-old.

The concern I have in hearing about your echo results is that they could represent obstructive sleep apnea.

Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is the heart’s response to chronic stress, especially to elevated blood pressure, which is common in sleep apnea. Pulmonary hypertension has many causes, but in someone very overweight (your body mass index, BMI, is 36.2, where “obese” is defined as over 30), I have to be concerned about chronic low oxygen to the lungs. There are many people with sleep apnea who aren’t diagnosed. I would recommend a sleep study. Certainly I recommend careful checking of your blood pressure, and weight loss.

Not everybody with diabetes needs medication.

Many people with Type 2 diabetes can be wellcontrolled just with dietary modification and often weight loss, and almost everybody with diabetes can improve with a better diet. Medications usually are given if the A1c is much greater than 7 percent and if diet, exercise and weight loss efforts have been so far inadequate.

In addition, medication often can be stopped with better control through lifestyle. Insulindependent Type 2 means just that -- insulin is being used, along with lifestyle and often non-insulin medications.

Except in very rare instances, everyone with Type 1 diabetes needs insulin.

Q: I heard a horror story from an old college friend about her apartment’s pipes springing a leak in the wintertime, and the maintenance crew not addressing it for days. I don’t know what I would do in the same situation. Do you have any advice? -- Taysha L., Alexandria, Va. A: You definitely can minimize damage from a broken pipe or uncontrolled water leak in your apartment, even before the maintenance person arrives. Here are steps to follow: • Review your apartment’s lease and information packet today. These papers include instructions on contacting leasing management or maintenance in an emergency.

• In emergencies such as water leaks, apartment communities normally specify that maintenance will be on site within 24 hours, and often much sooner. Take note of their exact time frames.

• Familiarize yourself with the apartment’s water shutoff valves. You will at least have shutoffs under the sink (for the hot and cold water) and behind/ beside the toilet. There also should be a shutoff for the water heater (if it’s inside your apartment).

• If a water leak occurs, locate the source of the leak as quickly as possible. Close the nearest shutoff valve, if possible. Put a bucket underneath the leak and use towels to sop up any spilled water.

• Contact the leasing office or the maintenance number immediately. Describe the problem, its location and the time that the leak occurred.

• If it’s after hours (and these emergencies always seem to happen after hours), the on-call maintenance person should call you back, usually within an hour, to provide further instructions.

What if there’s no shutoff for the pipe that’s leaking? The most important thing is to try and minimize the water damage until the water can be shut off (sometimes the shutoff is located elsewhere in the apartment building and can only be accessed by maintenance). Keep a bucket under the area and empty it before it gets too full.

What if maintenance takes days to address the leak?

Keep a record of dates and times of the calls you made, and when the repair was made. Meantime, if maintenance can’t get to the building for some reason -- such as a snowstorm -- ask the on-call person if the shutoff is accessible so that you can stop the water from flowing in.

HOME TIP: Apartment residents need to be just as familiar as homeowners with the locations of water shutoff valves and electrical panel shutoffs, so they can react quickly in a maintenance emergency.

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. In large bowl, combine flour, cream of tartar and baking soda.

2. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter and 1 1/3 cups sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition; beat in vanilla. Reduce speed to low; beat in flour mixture until wellblended.

3. In small bowl, combine remaining 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. Roll dough into 1-inch balls. Roll in cinnamon-sugar to coat evenly.

Place balls, 1 inch apart, on two ungreased cookie sheets.

4. Bake cookies until set and slightly crinkled on top, about 12 minutes, rotating cookie sheets between upper and lower oven racks halfway through baking. Cool cookies 1 minute on cookie sheet; with wide spatula, transfer cookies to wire racks to cool completely.

5. Repeat with remaining dough. Makes about 54 cookies.

Here are two items of importance to seniors.

FLU SHOTS Late September or early October is not too soon to get your flu shot. Now would be a good time to plan for it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the flu season can start as early as the beginning of October.

Did you know: There’s a special high-dose flu vaccine for seniors age 65 and older? The reason is that the regular dose doesn’t always protect us because our immune system often is weakened. This vaccine is four times as strong, setting up a better immune response.

Did you know: That Medicare will pay for the vaccine? (As will most insurance under the Affordable Care Act.) Did you know: You don’t have to go to your doctor to get the flu shot. There are numerous other locations. To find a flu shot in your area, begin scouting the Internet at sites like cvs. com or flushot.healthmap.org, or call your local pharmacy.

MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT Open enrollment for Medicare begins Oct. 15 to change from the Original to an Advantage Plan, or vice versa. Don’t confuse this with the Health Insurance Marketplace, which opens enrollment a month later. As a Medicare beneficiary, it’s illegal for a Marketplace company to sell you a Marketplace plan, so don’t be taken in.

But there is a caveat: If you have a Marketplace plan and think you’ll sign up for Medicare later, beware that you might be subject to a lifelong penalty if you enroll late.

Because of the variety of situations (Marketplace versus Medicare, Part A versus Parts A and B), your best bet is to get advice from Medicare before the signup period begins if you’re now moving from Marketplace to Medicare. Call them at 1-800-MEDICARE (1800-633-4227).

The new program, the Rural-Urban Commuting Areas system (RUCA), will determine what is urban, rural and highly rural by determining whether an area is within commuting distance of a large urban center.

More than one-third (36 percent) of veterans enrolled in the VA system are considered rural. That’s 3.2 million veterans who need services. In the past five years, 1.6 million veterans received rural health services.

Among the latest moves to help rural and highly rural veterans: • Over 60 clinics were opened.

• TeleHealth: Of the 144,000 veterans getting TeleHealth care, 41,000 are still able to live at home instead of getting long-term institutional care.

• A transportation grant will help 11,000 highly rural
