by Patricia L. Cook There are more than 10,466 miles of streets in the United States named Main Street. Even if the “main” street in a city or town is not called “Main,” it is there – usually the most important street in an area’s history.

• Main Streets are all over the world and tell many varied stories. Canada has its share.

One of the most famous is the Main Street in Winnipeg, where it intersects with Portage Avenue, considered the heart of Winnipeg, the center of the country and thereby the heart of Canada. It is also said to be the coldest intersection in Canada! (eh, pretty much an unfair assessment!)

• “The Main” in Montreal is actually named Boulevard St-Laurent, also known as St. Lawrence Boulevard. It is considered the symbolic dividing line between the English and French communities in the city. Designated a National Historic Site in 2002, the street was made famous by the music of Leonard Cohen and books by Mordecai Richler.

• Another Canadian Main Street was once listed as the longest road in the world. Yonge Street in Toronto runs from the Lake Ontario shore through Toronto north to become Highway 11 and continue through many country towns and wilderness to Lake Simcoe. turn the page for more!

• Yonge Street was removed from Guinness list of records in 1998, possibly because of road changes near Barrie, Ontario. The distance for the road is 1,178 miles (1,896 km), which sure seems long enough to be distinctive! A brass plaque is embedded in the sidewalk on Yonge Street near Toronto’s waterfront, across from Dundas Square, that marks distances to key cities of Ontario. The street was named after Sir George Yonge, an expert on Roman roads,

by Ontario’s first governor.

• The Main Streets at Disney theme parks are based on Walt Disney’s hometown when he was a boy, Marceline, Missouri. Walt wanted to create an area that would bring back memories of childhood in a small town.

• San Luis, Arizona’s Main Street is unusual in that it comes to a dead-end at the Mexican border.

• The Main Street of Melvindale, Michigan runs through a trailer park near The Ford LLC River Rouge automobile plant, which was the largest factory in the world when it was fully operational. The Rouge, which is now a museum, was where the Model A automobile was first produced in 1927. The gigantic was Henry Ford’s idea with a factory Used facility that would achieve “a continuous, nonstop process from raw material to finished product.”

It had its own railroad with 16 locomotives, a bus network with 15 miles of paved streets, a police force, fire department, and even a fully staffed hospital. In the 1930s, at its peak, more than 100,000 people were employed at The Rouge.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: With a couple of family members already heavily into it, I’m interested in becoming a bird-watcher too -- if only to have something interesting to talk about at holiday dinners. I thought it would be easy, but even just bird-watching in my backyard, I haven’t seen much more than sparrows. Any tips? -- Bart L., Portland, Ore. DEAR BART: As a new bird-watcher myself, I’ll fall back on the experts on this one. That’s because starting out in the hobby (or is it a sport?) can be surprisingly difficult in some respects, such as finding birds that are more interesting than your common backyard species.

The “10,000 Birds” blog has a very nice post that lays out some key tips for new bird-watchers.

First, the time of year is key to spotting certain types

of birds; but more importantly, find experienced birdwatchers, and pay attention to what they tell you. It’s not as easy as grabbing a good pair of binoculars and striding forth into nature; you need to know where certain birds are likely to nest or hunt, and the best areas from which to spot them.

The Internet is a great resource, and particularly group meet-up sites like Meetup.com, on which you can locate bird-watching groups in your area. If you can’t find one that suits your schedule or that looks “right” for you, contact your local Audubon chapter to find out about other groups, chapter meetings or educational seminars or classes.

Even if they’re not strictly bird-watching classes, you may meet other enthusiasts who can point you in the right direction.

MAIN STREET (continued): Have you heard of the longest Main Street in America? The city limits of Island Park, Idaho follow a 35 mile (56 km) drive on U.S. highway 20 that connects Idaho with West Yellowstone, Montana and Yellowstone National Park. The rural town is only 500-5000 feet wide (1521524 m) along the highway with fishing lodges, mountain views, the very cold Henry’s Fork (also known as the North Fork of the Snake River), Henry’s Lake as well as Island Park Reservoir. Western hospitality beckons visitors to stop and explore.

Some Main Streets have had many years of decay before being brought back to life by history lovers. One such place is York, Pennsylvania. By 1978 all four of its downtown department stores were shuttered.

Through programs provided for re-establishing downtown areas, the town is now thriving and Main Street is a popular destination.

Natchitoches, Louisiana, founded in 1714, is the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase.

The main street in the downtown area faces the Cane River and is named Front Street.

This “main” street is kept alive by many small stores with southern charm, tasty restaurants plus a fabulous annual Christmas Festival. It is a destination street to visit. Natchitoches was also given a boost in popularity by the movie, Steel Magnolias, shot on location in 1989.

A famous motorcycle gathering fills up Main Street and the entire city of Sturgis, South Dakota annually. The 74th Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be August 4-10, this year. The first rally was held in 1938 with nine motorcyclists in a race. Now the rally attracts as many as 600,000 motorcycle enthusiasts; but they don’t all race!

• On April 28, 1897, the Chickasaw and Choctaw, two of the Five Civilized Tribes, become the first to agree to abolish tribal government and communal ownership of land. For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 MAIN STREET (continued): • The small town of Wallace, Idaho was formed when the silver boom was happening in the surrounding mountains. The main street is actually Bank Street, with impressive old brick buildings harking back to the town’s glory days. With only about 1,000 residents the town hangs on to its roots and entertains travelers along Interstate 90, in the Silver Valley of northern Idaho.

• About 11 miles west of Wallace is Kellogg, another small Silver Valley town. The residents approved $8 million in bonds in the late 1980s to build a gondola from Kellogg to the top of Silver Mountain Ski Resort. The 3.1 mile (5 km) gondola ride is North America’s longest and is available for summer adventures on the mountain as well. The ski area was actually owned by the city and its taxpayers for a number of years but is now owned by a private company. In 2008 the company opened Idaho’s largest indoor water park as well, keeping the town on the radar for year round fun.

• The entire small town of Eureka Springs in the Ozark Mountains or northern Arkansas is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. South Main Street is included in a loop that can be enjoyed on a drive or trolley ride through the hilly terrain. Like many historic small towns, tourism is the biggest business.

• While many towns and cities have Main Streets that thrive because either the city government kept the downtowns alive or private citizens invested time and effort, some have needed help from outside interests. In the U.S., the National Trust for Historic Preservation has a nonprofit subsidiary, the National Main Street Center, Inc., that provides grants and advice to help.

• Morna Anne Murray was born in 1945, the fourth child and only daughter to James and Marion Murray. She grew up with five brothers in Springhill, Nova Scotia. Anne was a tomboy and in her own words, “the reason I became a successful singer was that, as a kid, I could never do anything as well as my brothers. I wanted to do something better than they did.”

She started singing as a child, took voice lessons as a teen, and hasn’t stopped singing!

• Murray’s 40+ year career has garnered her 20 number one hits. She has sold more than 54 million albums.

• Murray’s first paid music job was while she was studying at the University of New Brunswick.

She was hired to sing at the Curling Club at Fredericton. This may not sound great, but curling is a very popular sport in Canada! It was a good assignment.

• When the snow flies and winter sets in for the northern U.S. and Canada many people become snowbirds and head south. Since “Snowbird” was her first big hit, Murray’s fans are often called snowbirds too. It was the second song ever written by Canadian songwriter Gene MacLellan and took Murray to the spotlight internationally. “Snowbird” sold a million copies in 1970 and for the first time in history, an American gold record was awarded to a solo Canadian female.

• When Murray became a regular on the “Glenn Campbell Goodtime Hour,” which was a hit show at the time, the American audience fell in love with her even more.

The first road signs used were milestones that indicated the distance and directions to destinations. Used as early as the 4th Century, BC, there were approximately 50,000 miles (80,000 km) of roads in the Roman Empire.

• The saying “all roads lead to Rome,” was really true in ancient times. Rome was the hub for trade, commerce, culture, politics and military might in all of Europe for many years.

• The Forum Romanum, which is the center of the city of Rome, Italy, has the remains of the Milliarium Aureum (column), or the “Golden Milestone.” It was erected in 20 BC by Augustus, first emperor of the Roman Empire, The column was covered with gilt bronze and was the spot whereby all roads pointed out of the city. The names of the principal cities were engraved on the column along with their distances from Rome.

• Early road signs in North America were, like those of ancient Rome, mainly for giving the distance from one place to the next. Then as cars became popular in the early 1900s, a need for signs for safety became a high priority.

• Early automobile owners were mostly the wealthy who used the auto for convenience and entertainment. They formed clubs and started creating their own signs. Colors, shapes, messages, sizes and placements were not uniform from one area to the next!

• As early as 1899, owners of horseless carriages in New York City formed an automobile club when they met at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

They saw the need for signs to guide drivers through the city or to sites of interest within the city.

Standards for the shapes and colors of signs were developed. Round signs were used to warn of railroad crossings; the octagon was used to warn drivers to stop; diamonds were used to alert drivers that caution was needed; rectangular signs were chosen for providing directions and regulatory information. In the beginning signs were all black letters on white backgrounds.

• One city known for busy streets, New York City, is where the proposal for adopting universal road signs and traffic symbols started. The proposal was brought by the Deputy Chief Inspector of Police in New York in 1925.

• The first historical record of a STOP sign was in 1915, in Detroit, Michigan. Of course, maybe that was because most cars at that time were manufactured in Detroit.

• The Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways (MUTCD) was first drafted in 1934. Still used today, but of course, updated, it standardized the signs, signals, locations, marking and maintenance for roads and traffic devices.

• The octagonal shape of “STOP” signs was first recommended by the Mississippi Valley Association of State Highway Departments in 1923. Now universally used, the red signs are easily recognizable. Originally yellow, the red signs with white letters were not used until the MUTCD revision of 1954.

• Many signs are designed with figures instead of just words. This makes them recognizable without knowing the local language. Now, if a kangaroo crossing sign is on the road, you’ll most likely know you’re in a land down-under, not in New York City!

Q: I have several ashtrays from Las Vegas casinos that no longer exist. I especially like one from the old Flamingo. Keep or toss? -- Fred, Howell, Mich.

A: Ashtrays have become popular with collectors in recent years. The ones you have sound especially interesting, and my bet is that they are valued in the $10 to $35 range, depending on rarity and condition.

Q: I have a pile of sheet music that I took to an antiques dealer. He only offered me about a dollar a sheet. What do you think? -- Beatrice, Sun City, Ariz.

A: Wayland Bunnell is an expert and collector of sheet music. I contacted him about your collection, and he said that unless you have something extraordinary, a dollar a sheet is probably a fair price. Of course, there always are exceptions to every rule.

For example, if most of your pieces are fairly common, a dollar sounds reasonable. If, on the other hand, your pieces feature personalities such as Shirley Temple or early Ragtime compositions, the values could be much higher. Bunnell is willing to advise you.

In spite of the name, SFF helps post-9/11 veterans from all the services. They cover family support, adaptive housing and transportation, special equipment, rehabilitative sports and so much more for injured and critically ill service veterans, as well as families of active-duty members.

Unlike many veterans “help” organizations, this one is mostly made up of either retired military or spouses of military personnel. In fact, it was one of those spouses who started SFF nine years ago.

The Semper Fi Fund (http://semperfifund.org) has garnered what so many veterans help groups haven’t: a four-star rating by Charity Navigator and an A-plus rating on CharityWatch.

According to its 2013 Annual Report, only 6 percent of donations are spent on overhead.

In 2013 alone, it helped 5,472 service members and their families and delivered 15,545 grants for a total of $14,559,793 in assistance. Here’s a partial list of what that included: 92 adaptive vehicles, 2,277 Team Semper Fi grants for rehabilitative athletics, 198 companion dogs, 160 camperships for the kids, 541 PTS/TBI devices, 16 grants for adaptive home purchase, 6,286 family-support assistance grants, 2,733 medicalsupport assistance grants and $1,151,777 from its America’s Fund, which supports families of injured and critically ill service members.

The Institute is real, from Webster University; the SPICE scam isn’t, coming from Russia. The scammers will invite you to become an “ambassador” for chess for a year and earn $25 million for that year. Of course you first have to send the scammers some money. While Microsoft won’t provide any more security updates, scammers promise they will in pop ups that might appear on your computer screen, as well as in emails and websites. A: A large area of damage can be a bit daunting, but you can probably replace that section yourself. You’ll need to buy a piece of wallboard that is a few inches bigger on all sides than the damaged area. You’ll also need a utility knife (box cutter), a wallboard saw, a sturdy scrap of plywood or a 1-by-1 board, wood screws, drywall screws, an electric drill, drywall tape, drywall putty (or joint compound) and a putty knife, and fine-grit sandpaper.

The wallboard caved in when your son charged into it, meaning the impact probably occurred between two studs. You’ll find this out when you begin to remove the damaged section.

Use a pencil and straight ruler to mark a cutting line along the top, sides and, if needed, bottom of the damaged area. Make the area as perfect a square or rectangle as possible, which will make the repair much easier.

Using the utility knife, slice along the lines, then follow with the drywall saw to cut all the way through. Be very careful sawing next to the studs, as electrical and plumbing lines sometimes run along these boards. Use the utility knife or angle the saw to slice drywall that’s flush against a stud. Carefully pull away the damaged wallboard. If part of the damaged area is attached to the stud, tug gently on the attached wallboard to reveal the screw, and then either remove the screw or carefully knock out the drywall from underneath it.

Measure the new, square hole, and cut the replacement wallboard to those dimensions. Make sure the new drywall fits -- it doesn’t have to be perfectly snug, but should be pretty close.

Now, even if part of the new wallboard will be secured to a stud, you’ll still need to add a backing to the unsecured side (or sides) of the patch, especially if it’s a really big hole. The 1-by-1 scrap wood comes into play here. Measure and cut the wood so that it extends an inch or so past the top and bottom of the hole. Place it behind the hole, located about the center of the biggest gap between the studs, and use your electric drill to secure it with a wood screw, top and bottom.

With the backing in place, put the new wallboard up with a helper holding it steady. Use drywall or wood screws to attach the wallboard to the backing boards and to the stud (near the original screw location but not at it).

Now to cover it up: Place drywall tape along the edges of the new patch. Using a wide putty knife, apply drywall putty or joint compound over the tape, feathering the edges out to better blend with the surrounding wall. Let the compound dry for at least recommended time, then sand the compound smooth.

Additional drying time may be needed before you paint over the repair area, and I recommend priming the area first.

Break Out the Steak For years we’ve been told to focus on plantbased proteins (beans, for example) rather than meats and cheeses from animal-based proteins.

Now all that may change -- depending on our age. Two studies, released within a week of each other, concur: In middle age, a high-protein diet makes us four times more likely to die of cancer, especially animal proteins like cheese, meat and milk, which increases overall deaths. Yet after age 65, an increase in protein is healthy.

One study, reported in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, suggests that as we age, we don’t absorb protein like we used to. This lack of protein can lead to a decline in cognitive abilities, as well as how we function in activities of daily living. Researchers studied the diets of over 1,000 seniors with an average age of 67, looking at their intake of plant versus animal protein, and queried them again seven years later.

Men with the highest animal protein had a 39 percent lower chance of functional decline.

Scientists didn’t see similar results in those who had a majority of plant-based protein in their diets.

The other study, in the journal Cell Metabolism, took a closer look at the physics of why protein goes from being bad for us to being good. The growth hormone IGF-I drops off after age 65, and we can become frail with muscle loss without an increase in protein to offset what we’re not processing.

Your best bet: Go to your doctor and ask for a referral to a nutritionist. In the week before you go to your appointment, write down everything you eat to give the nutritionist a baseline of your current food choices. Ask whether, given the two studies, you should make any adjustments in your diet.

Paget’s Disease: Bone Building Gone Wild

DEAR DR. ROACH: For several years, when I have had blood drawn it has shown an elevation in the alkaline phosphatase. It has been as high as 377 in recent tests. I have had the test to see if it was from the liver, but it was all right. I recently had a bone scan, and the doctor suspects Paget’s disease and is referring me to a bone oncologist. Do you have any comments in regard to this? -- D.C.A. ANSWER: Alkaline phosphatase is an enzyme that, when found in the blood, usually comes from the liver. Conditions such as gallstones or others that affect bile flow are the most likely to increase the level in the blood. However, alkaline phosphatase also may come from the bone, and in this case, Paget’s disease is the most likely cause.

Your doctor may have determined where the alkaline phosphatase is coming from by ordering a special isoenzyme blood test. The bone scan is usually diagnostic for Paget’s.

Paget’s disease is thought to result from abnormal osteoclasts, the cells that normally remodel bone. The osteoclasts break down bone, and osteoblasts build it back up again. Bone needs to be replaced over time to repair any microscopic cracks that have formed. Without normal bone turnover, the bones become brittle.

In Paget’s disease, the bone remodeling in one or more particular areas is excessive, causing bone buildup. The most common sites are the skull, spine, pelvis and leg bones. Paget’s disease is very effectively treated with medications such as zoledronic acid (Reclast or Zometa). Not all people with Paget’s need treatment; however, a high alkaline phosphatase level usually is a reason to treat.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have two grandchildren who spike fevers and get sick a lot. How valuable are natural wellness formulas to build up their system and get them stronger? Their doctor has told them it will not help, but he isn’t giving them anything to help their immune system get stronger. Any suggestions? -- K.L. ANSWER: The immune system gets stronger as kids age. The key to a healthy immune system remains a good diet, good exercise and sleep, and avoiding too much stress. Good hand hygiene is necessary for reducing exposure to bacteria and viruses. I am skeptical of the ability for supplements to improve the immune system.

That being said, there are vitamins and trace minerals that are essential for the immune system to function at peak level. Most of us can get adequate amounts from a healthy diet.

The supplements sold to “boost the immune system” generally are multivitamins with some additional unproven ingredients.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 70-year-old man in good health. I exercise daily and eat wholesome foods. I now realize that my sexual activity is better in the mornings. On occasion, I get up, take Viagra and go for a brisk walk, have breakfast and go back to bed. Is the testosterone level higher in the mornings? -- Anon.

ANSWER: Yes, testosterone levels are higher for both men and women in the mornings. Even younger men often notice this. Also, Viagra works much better if it is taken on an empty stomach and given one to two hours to work.

Steak With Mushroom Sauce

Tender, lean filet mignon steaks are panfried, then smothered in a mushroom, shallot and port wine sauce. Either ruby or tawny port works well in this recipe.

4 (about 4 ounces each) well-trimmed beef tenderloin steaks (filet mignon), 3/4 inch thick 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 teaspoon olive oil 1 (1/4 cup) large shallot, minced 1 package (10 ounces) sliced white mushrooms 1 package (4 ounces) assorted sliced wild mushrooms 1/4 cup port wine 1. Sprinkle steaks on both sides with 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper. Heat nonstick 12inch skillet over medium-high heat until very hot.

Add steaks and cook 8 to 10 minutes for mediumrare or until desired doneness, turning steaks over once. Transfer steaks to platter; keep warm.

2. To drippings in skillet, add oil and shallot, and cook 1 minute, stirring often. Add mushrooms and remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper, and cook until liquid evaporates and mushroom mixture is golden, 8 to 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Add port and 1/4 cup water; cook 30 seconds, stirring constantly. Spoon mushroom sauce over steaks.

• Each serving: About 265 calories, 13g total fat (4g saturated), 70mg cholesterol, 365 sodium, 7g total carbs, 2g dietary fiber, 27g protein.
