by Patricia L. Cook Whether you are dog tired (very tired), living a dog’s life (difficult life), or so busy you feel like you are chasing your own tail (working hard but not seeing progress), this Tidbits should give you a reason to go hog wild (become highly enthusiastic)!

• An idiom is “a set expression of two or more words that means something other than the literal meanings of its individual words.” The idioms we’ll explore in this Tidbits are those that deal with animals.

• Watch these pages like a hawk (carefully) to see if you recognize these sayings. You may find that many are very familiar to you. You may also find some that are complete hogwash (nonsense). In trying not to beat a dead horse (engage in pointless and repetitive discussion), you may want to read these at a snail’s pace (slowly) so that you can catch the meaning of each sentence!

• An expression that seems to have disappeared or just never caught on with current generations is “I’ll swan” or “I’ll swanee!” Mostly used in the south, this is an expression of surprise probably as a replacement for “I swear” or a curse word. If you’ve never heard this one you probably think it is for the birds (not for you.)!

• Many expressions are ingrained in our vocabulary when we are only knee high to a grasshopper (very small.) Some are kept out of earshot of children because they may not be appropriate for young ears! (Those won’t be in Tidbits!)

• While little children may be cute as a bug’s ear (the smaller they come, the cuter they are), some are bullheaded (stubborn) and make a beeline (go toward) to trouble. After all, when the cat’s away, the mice will play (people misbehaving without supervision).

Sometimes supervision is in the hands of the biggest frog in the pond (most important person in a group), while at other times it may be given to the leader who is as calm as a toad in the sun (calm and content). Either way, if there is conflict, it may be necessary to separate the sheep from the goats (distinguish the good from the bad).

• When conflict arises, there are times when people act like animals. A dumb cluck (person acting stupid) may be pigheaded (stupidly stubborn) and try to find a scapegoat (innocent person who is blamed) when things go wrong.

• A bullheaded (obstinate) person may try to butt heads (to argue fiercely) with a sheepish (embarrassed) friend only to find that she will pull the wool over his eyes ( fool him).

• It is easy to get fleeced (swindled) if you don’t pay attention to what is happening to you and just ignore obvious problems. If you make yourself a sitting duck (easy target) you may end up in a harebrained scheme (foolish plan).

• It is much better to have all your ducks in a row (be organized), than to go down a rabbit hole (enter a fantasy world) when you need to make decisions.

Dog Can’t Resist Jumping on People

DEAR MUDDY SHIRT: Jumping up is a very common behavior in dogs. The key here is to teach Bailey that it isn’t acceptable.

How? Well, yelling or getting excited yourself when Bailey jumps up will likely do nothing, or even make the problem worse. Pushing Bailey away or swatting his nose isn’t helpful, either.

Instead, try the “I’m not interacting with you” method.

When Bailey starts to jump up (such as when you come home) stay calm, but look away and fold your arms. Say

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Our dog “Bailey” is about a year and a half old, and he has always gotten very excited around the kids and guests, and jumps up to paw at them. The kids love to play with him, which encourages him to jump up more. He is otherwise very lovable. How can I stop this behavior? -- Sign me “Muddy Shirt” in Madison, Wis.

What you’re teaching Bailey is that he will not get the attention he craves if he behaves a certain way (jumping).

Make sure to teach your kids to do the same.

There are lots of resources and methods to address jumping up, such as the ASPCA’s pet-care section. Keep researching, or contact a professional trainer to help.

CAT AND MOUSE (continued): Hold on if you think we are barking up the wrong tree (have the wrong idea), fantasy worlds can be fun and engaging. Just remember that it’s a dog-eat-dog world (there is a lot of competition in life) out there and you need to be careful not to be constantly chasing your own tail (working hard but not getting anything done)!

If organizing gives you a burr under your saddle (causes you to be irritated), remember that the early bird gets the worm (start early so that you have the best chance for success).

Seeing an opportunity to improve your life or your situation, sometimes requires walking on eggshells (being careful not to offend others) or a somewhat opposite situation; taking the bull by the horns (tackling the problem).

You sure don’t need to be told that you are not the sharpest quill on the porcupine (not very smart) if you are having a hard time with an assignment. Most people realize when they struggle and have butterflies in their stomachs (feel nervous) when they have bitten off more than they can chew (taken on too hard or big a task).

Speaking of chewing, when you are hungry as a bear (really hungry), it is usually best to take your time eating anyway. Don’t be silly and wolf down your food (eat too fast) or you may find yourself sick as a horse (very sick)!

Hold your horses (be patient) when you need to wait for your food, whether at your home, someone else’s home or a restaurant. Be a good egg (nice person) not a bad egg (bad person) and avoid fighting like cats and dogs (fierce argument). Don’t bite the hand that feeds you (harm someone who is helping you)!

• On March 30, 1775, hoping to keep the New England colonies dependent on the British, King George III endorses the New England Restraining Act. The Act required New England colonies to trade exclusively with Great Britain. An additional rule would come into effect banning colonists from fishing in the North Atlantic.

• On March 28, 1814, the funeral of Guillotin, namesake of the infamous execution device, takes place outside of Paris. If it is raining cats and dogs outside (raining hard) then we are likely to be as happy as a clam (contended) staying at home reading a good book or watching a movie. If the sun is shining and it is nice and warm out, we are likely to go out to have a whale of a time (great enjoyment).

CELINE DION

Born into a musically gifted family, Celine Dion is the youngest of 14 children. Her parents were both musicians and raised their children to be involved with music as well.

• Celine Marie Claudette Dion was born on March 30, 1968, in the rural French Canadian town of Charlemagne, Quebec, about 30 miles (48 km) east of Montreal. Celine’s parents were the operators of a small club where the entire family performed on weekends.

• Celine composed a French song, along with her mother and one of her brothers, when she was only twelve. When the demo tape with that song wound up in the hands of René Angélil, a personal manager, the course of Celine’s life was forever changed.

• Amazed by Dion’s voice, Angélil was intent on making Celine famous in January, 1981.

CELINE DION (continued): Celine Dion, became Dion’s first gold record in the U.S. and more than 12 million copies were sold internationally. She has earned awards from all over the world: Juno and Felix Awards in Canada, Grammys in the U.S., and many more.

Dion announced at a New Years’ Eve 1999 concert that she would be taking some time off to start a family. She and husband, René, welcomed a baby boy, René-Charles Angélil, into their lives on January 25, 2001. After a two-year absence, Celine released a new album, “A New Day Has Come” in March, 2002.

Dion began a three-year contract to appear at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in March, 2003.

Her commitment was to appear five nights a week in The Colosseum, built especially for her and her show, “A New Day.” The 90-minute show was a “fusion of song, performance art, theatrical innovation and state-of-the-art technology.” The theater cost approximately $95 million!

Springtime is a welcome time of year when the grass turns green and bulbs spring to life with colorful flowers. There are also other plants that spring up as the air and ground warms for the pleasure of people and animals!

• Crocus are among the first flowers to burst from their bulbs in spring when the ground gets warm. From “snow” crocuses, which are the first to bloom, to giant Dutch crocuses, the flowers brighten gardens in a variety of colors: red, pink, purple, blue, yellow, orange and more. Even though the latter are called “giant,” all crocuses are small, between 2-4 inches (510 cm) tall. Some have strong scents that lure bees out of their hives as early as February to start their honey-making process.

• Crocus means cheerfulness. Appropriately named, the little blooms are rarely bothered by deer, rabbits and squirrels. Snow and freezing temperatures can sometimes stop the blooms, leaving the greenery to peek out alone. Also, fall-blooming crocuses reappear in the spring but without their flowers.

• Some other small flowers that may sprout from bulbs even before crocus are: glory-ofthe-snow, winter aconite, common snowdrop, spring slowflake and netted iris. (Notice: 3 of the 4 early bloomers have names associated with winter!)

• Along with the bulbs planted in yards, ephemeral wildflowers are beginning to pop up in forests all around North America at this time of year. Ephemeral means “short-lived.” For the spring flowering ephemerals, they make an appearance as soon as the weather is warm, leaf out, bloom, spread a little and go dormant when hot weather intrudes. Spring ephemerals prefer damp areas like stream banks.

• Ephemeral wildflowers, as a group, make up one of the largest types of wildflowers. Unseen by many, they appear and disappear quickly.

The small, colorful plants take advantage of sunlight that comes into forested areas before leaves grow on the trees over their heads. Once the leaves block the sunshine, the glorious display of little flowers goes away!

by May or early June. They emerge again each spring and if the ground has not been disturbed, usually in larger, more colorful numbers.

Skunk cabbage is an ephemeral with an odor of rotten meat. It has the strange ability to raise the temperature inside its flowers to cause snow to melt around it.

• A more pleasant ephemeral that is nice to have in a home garden is Dutchman’s Breeches. The cute little white flowers resemble pantaloons blowing in the wind.

• Trout Lily is so-named for its timing to bloom when trout are running or spawning. Trout fishermen love to discover these little blooms!

• Trilliums always have 3 leaves, 3 petals and 3 sepals. Most of these are native to the United States. They are a favorite snack for deer so their little blooms sometimes disappear quickly. Trilliums, as well as many other flowers, grow from rhizomes, not bulbs. A rhizome is a “horizontal underground stem which can send out both shoots and roots.”

• Spring officially started on March 20th, so now is the time to head to the woods to see what has come up from the ground!

A: The cobalt-blue Shirley Temple pitchers were first manufactured by the Hazel Atlas glass company in 1934 and production continued for the next eight years. The pitcher was part of a three-piece set that consisted of the pitcher, a bowl and mug. The pitchers were sometimes given away as premiums in boxes of Wheaties and Bisquick.

Your pitcher is probably worth about $75, assuming it is in good to excellent condition. In recent years, reproductions have been made, and if you find one in a shop or at an antiques mall that is cheaply priced and appears in pristine condition, jump on the good ship lollipop and sail away, because chances are it is a fake.

Watch Your Mail for New ID Cards The new Veteran Health Identification Cards are coming. These cards will have added security features: the veteran’s Member ID, a Plan ID reflecting the veteran’s enrollment in Department of Veterans Affairs health care, and a unique identifier.

Among other security features, a “VA” will be in Braille for visually impaired veterans, and the veteran’s branch of service will be displayed on the card.

Any special awards (such as Purple Heart) will be listed. The card will include VA phone numbers and emergency-care instructions on the back. The bar code and magnetic strip won’t contain any personally identifiable information.

That should just about cover it, right? These new cards should be a big step toward protecting veterans from identity theft.

Don’t look for your card in the mail immediately, but keep an eye out. The first steps in the rollout will be to those who are newly enrolled in health care and to others who have not been issued a Veteran Identification Card. Beginning in April, there will be a three-month push to get the new health cards to those who already have a veteran ID card. (Cut up the old card in small pieces, being sure to slice up any numbers or name, and put in separate trash bags.)

While you’re not required to use VA health care, you are encouraged to enroll and get the health ID card.

You can get more information about the cards in a few ways: Go online to www.va.gov/healthbenefits/ vhic. Visit your local VA medical facility (see the enrollment coordinator). Or call 1-877-222-VETS (8387), especially if the VA doesn’t have your current address on file or to verify that they do. (Do it quickly.)

We throw away a lot of food -- both at the retail level and at home -- for a lot of reasons.

On the retail level, food can be discarded because of damage (dented cans), overstocking, unpurchased holiday foods, spillage and blemished foods.

At home, we throw away food for even more reasons, including spillage, lack of knowledge about preparation and portion sizes, the aging of fruits and vegetables, uneaten holiday foods and confusion over “use by” versus “best before” versus “sell by” dates on packaging. (Unfortunately there are no federal regulations regarding the date information except on infant formula. Some states require date information, but it’s not uniform.)

The Department of Agriculture has completed a major study on food loss, and it has come to some startling conclusions about how much food we throw away in one year.

On the consumer level: fresh fruit, 9.5 billion pounds; fresh vegetables, 12.8 billion pounds; poultry, 3.9 billion pounds; eggs, 2.1 billion pounds; fish, 1.5 billion pounds; milk, 10.5 billion pounds.

Per individual, that means: fresh fruit, 40 pounds; fresh vegetables, 59 pounds; poultry, 13 pounds; eggs, 7 pounds; fish, 5 pounds; milk, 34 pounds.

When it comes to the calorie value of food that’s thrown away, two studies differ in their conclusions. One says it’s the equivalent of 789 calories per day. The other puts it at 1,400 calories per day.

It’s likely that much food is thrown away simply because of the confusion over the dates. The Department of Agriculture explains: • Sell-by date -- How long the store can display the product for sale.

• Best if used by (or before) -- Use before this day for best flavor or quality.

•Use by date -- The last date recommended to use the product while at the peak of quality.

Cans: Canned foods are safe as long as they aren’t exposed temperatures below freezing or above 90 degrees F, and don’t have dents, rust or bulges.

(Another opinion: Go by the dates on the can.)

Eggs: Store in the coldest part of the refrigerator, not the door. Use within three to five weeks of purchase. They’re safe to use after the “sell-by” date.

Get Ready for Spring We’re finally into March, and for most of the country, that means the start of a welcome change from a cold and difficult winter. As the snow melts and the temperature warms, it’s time to start getting ready for the growing season that’s about to begin.

In the northern part of the country, it’s unlikely that the lawn is ready for mowing. But homeowners here need to start unpacking and preparing lawn-care equipment for use. This is a good time to bring the hedge trimmers, saws, rakes and other tools down from their pegs. Wipe off excess oil and dust from the handles and clean dirt or rust spots from the metal blades or tines. Sharpen trimmer and lawnmower blades using a metal rasp, or take them to a hardware store or service that will

sharpen them for you.

Bring out the lawnmower and prepare it for its first use.

In the fall, you should have removed or emptied the gas tank, removed the spark plug, and removed the mower blades for cleaning and storage; now it’s time to put those back on.

Start by installing the blades and brushing away old grass cuttings and dirt from the underside of the mower, then turn the mower upright and fill the tank with fresh gasoline or the correct gas-oil mixture. Install the spark plug. Roll the mower outside, prime the motor (either using a priming button if it has one, or by tugging the starter cord twice), and start the lawnmower. Run it for a few minutes, testing the throttle and other settings, then shut it down and store it in an accessible place, ready to mow the lawn.

In more southerly states, new grass should already be visible, if not yet ready to mow. Now is the time to dethatch the lawn, if needed, to allow that new growth more air and light. Any bare spots should be re-sodded,

There’s some grim news for those of us who aren’t active. A study out of Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago found that if we’re over the age of 60, every hour in a day that we sit increases our risk of becoming disabled -- by 46 percent.

But it gets worse. Even if we’re active at other times, it doesn’t completely offset the results of ... sitting.

No, the study didn’t say that we definitely will become disabled if we spend too much time sitting (that’s a topic for other studies), but clearly the odds aren’t in our favor.

For the purposes of the study, researchers defined “disabled” as not being able to take care of our needs -- the activities of daily living, such as getting dressed. Most of the participants spent about nine hours a day sitting.

The study looked at the level of moderate to vigorous activity. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, moderate exercise is effort rated as a 5 or 6 on a scale of 0 to 10. Vigorous exercise is a 7 or 8 on that scale. One minute of vigorous activity equals two minutes of moderate activity. The study found that exercising for even 10 minutes at a time, for a total of 150 minutes a week, as well as doing muscle-strengthening exercises two days a week, brings benefits.

For even greater health benefits, researchers suggest upping the 2 1/2 hours a week to 5 hours. Muscle strengthening can include working with resistance bands, yoga and weight lifting.

While those hours don’t use up all the “sitting” time we also engage in, it does help to even the risk score with less sitting and more moving.

Family Itching to be Rid of Pinworms DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Two of my children, a boy in the second grade and a girl in kindergarten, have been scratching their behinds for a week.

I mentioned this to my neighbor, and she said they probably have pinworms. That made me sick to my stomach.

How do I know for sure? If they have them, where did they come from? I have two other children. Should they, my husband and I also be treated? I am really upset. -- A.D. ANSWER: Calm down. Pinworms are easily treated. They’re harmless and don’t indicate a lack of cleanliness in your home. They’re found worldwide, and no stratum of society is immune to infection with them.

Transmission takes place when pinworm eggs find their way into another person’s mouth. Scratching embeds eggs under the fingernails. The majority of infections take place when an adult or child with pinworm eggs under his or her nails or on his or her hands touches another, and that person then transfers them to the mouth. In the digestive tract, an adult pinworm emerges in a month to six weeks.

Infected people perpetuate the cycle of infection in their own bodies by transmitting eggs to their mouths.

The mature female pinworm travels down the digestive tract at night and deposits her eggs at or just outside the anus. A female lays more than 11,000 eggs. They’re the cause of intense itching.

The diagnosis is made by finding the worm or its eggs. The best time to look is first thing in the morning, before the child has washed. A pinworm

looks like a thin, white thread, about four-tenths of an inch (1 cm) long. Make the search with a flashlight and a magnifying glass. Scotch tape, fixed to a tongue depressor or a similar object and pressed against the skin near the anus, traps eggs, which the doctor can see with a microscope. Mebendazole and albendazole do a good job in getting rid of the worms. All family members should be treated.

Peanut Brittle

Nibble this old-time treat on its own, or crush it and serve over ice cream. For variety, try other nuts, such as almonds or cashews.

1 cup sugar 1/2 cup light corn syrup 1/4 cup water 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 cup salted peanuts 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1. Lightly grease large cookie sheet.

2. In heavy 2-quart saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water and butter; cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sugar has dissolved and syrup is bubbling.

3. Set candy thermometer in place and continue cooking, stirring frequently, until temperature reaches 300 F to 310 F (hard-crack stage), 20 to 25 minutes.

(Once temperature reaches 220 F, it will rise quickly, so watch carefully.) Stir in peanuts.

4. Remove from heat and stir in baking soda (mixture will bubble vigorously); immediately pour onto prepared sheet. With two forks, quickly lift and stretch peanut mixture into 14-by-12-inch rectangle.

5. Cool brittle completely on cookie sheet on wire rack. With hands, break brittle into small pieces. Layer between waxed paper in airtight container. Store at room temperature up to 1 month. Makes about 1 pound.

Loneliness: The Constant Heartache

Three Reasons Why You Are Shy and the One Thing You Can Do About It “I’m shy. That’s just the way I am,” said a young lady I spoke to recently. To her, shyness is in the same category as the color of her eyes or the size of her feet – something she cannot change. But she can change, and so can you. You do not have to be stranded alone in the corner of a room while everyone else has a good time.

Here are three reasons why you are shy and one thing you can do about it.

Reason 1. You have become comfortable with your shyness. You protect yourself in a cocoon of self-doubt, unworthiness and insecurity, and it feels safe. It is like an old pair of shoes; worn, ugly and disintegrating, but you are used to them. If you bought a new pair you would have to break them in and they might pinch or hurt. And what if you didn’t like the way they looked or maybe they wouldn’t go with your favorite outfit? It is too easy to stay with the old ones – no risk, no unpleasant pain, no change. Your shyness is comfortable and your misery is manageable.

Reason 2. You have convinced yourself you must be perfect before you can be personable. You think that there are certain characteristics you must have that

Now, the one thing you can do about your shyness.

You can re-direct your compassion. Compassion is shared distress combined with the desire to help relieve the distress. It is feeling the other person’s pain, understanding the other person’s experience. Notice the three reasons for shyness are all about how you feel, what you experience, and the way you think.
