by Janet Spencer On March 16, 1966, Neil Armstrong and David Scott launched into orbit in Gemini 8. The space flight was the first instance of a catastrophic failure nearly claiming the lives of the astronauts.

NEAR CATASTROPHE Neil Armstrong and David Scott were orbiting in Gemini 8. Their mission was to dock with a craft already orbiting. After completing the first space docking in history, a short circuit set off a rocket booster, sending the Gemini 8 into an uncontrollable spin, at one revolution per minute.

They worked to stabilize the craft. Armstrong struggled to regain control by using the retro rockets, wasting precious re-entry fuel. Fearing an explosion, Ground Control immediately ordered an emergency splashdown. Would our astronauts survive? ABC interrupted a new TV show to give a bulletin. The interrupted TV show was a campy TV version of a popular comic book hero, who fought crime by employing intellect and detective skills combined with science and technology. A thousand angry calls flooded operators complaining of the interruption and insisting that the channel be returned to the regularly scheduled program. What was the spell-binding action and adventure show that viewers couldn’t stand to miss?

The TV show that was interrupted by a news bulletin about the gripping situation of the Gemini 8 was called Batman. Neil Armstrong and David Scott survived the event, while Batman and Robin outwitted the Catwoman.

ANOTHER BAD DAY IN SPACE • The ill-fated Apollo 13 mission was supposed to be the third landing of a man on the moon.

Instead, it turned into a hair-raising ordeal when an oxygen tank in the service module exploded due to faulty wiring only 56 hours after launch. The lunar landing was cancelled as the astronauts swung around the moon and headed back to earth. Their damaged command module was abandoned and all three astronauts crowded into the lunar module Aquarius as a lifeboat for the four-day return trip home.

• The lunar module was intended for use on the moon and was outfitted to support two people for two days, and now it had to support three people for four days. Much jury-rigging was done in order to accomplish the safe return to earth, as much of the world watched the ordeal unfold on TV. • The crew was extremely lucky that the emergency occurred when they were still on the first leg of their journey to the moon and still had enough supplies, equipment, and power to get them home again. If it had happened on their return journey, especially after the lunar module had already been left behind, it is likely that they would have died.

It’s Still Winter for Backyard Birds

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Please tell your readers to remember to keep their bird feeders full in cold weather. Use high-energy food or suet, if possible.

When the ground and plants are covered with heavy snow, it’s very difficult for birds to find enough to fill their stomachs. I have two feeders that I’m filling twice a day, and I keep suet out at all times. During warmer weather I only need to fill them twice per week. “My” birds are very happy and full! -- D. Even though we’re turning a corner into spring, in much of the country -- especially after this difficult winter -- snow will cover the ground well into March and even beyond.

Birds that do not migrate but “winter over” have to put up with the snow and ice just as we humans do. But food is likely hard to find, particularly in this transition

period when wintertime sources of food have been depleted. Keeping a backyard feeder filled with birdseed is helpful, while suet -- basically, beef fat -- gives birds extra energy and nutrients.

Place suet about 5 feet off the ground and close to a tree trunk. Special feeders are available, but many homeowners just place it on an upright skewer, or even rub it onto the tree trunk. Raw suet can be set out throughout the winter and colder spring months, but experts advise against putting it out in warm weather. Suet not only turns rancid in the heat, but also melts, creating a risk of coating a bird’s feathers and making flight difficult. Warm-weather brands of suet are available, however.

On a side note, avoid putting out bacon drippings for birds: the preservatives used in commercially prepared bacon can be bad for their long-term health. (And ours, too, but that’s another story.)

• Against all odds, the astronauts returned home in good condition except for exhaustion and dehydration, and one of them had a urinary tract infection from the lack of water.

• Superstitious people point out that the mission was, after all, Apollo 13, that the mission blasted off at 13:13 military time, and that the accident happened on April 13, 1970.

APOLLO 13 The most famous line that came out of the neardisastrous Apollo 13 mission is, “Houston, we have a problem.” However, the actual quote was, “Okay, Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” which was uttered by Pilot Jack Swigert to Ground Control. Commander James Lovell then echoed: “Houston, we’ve had a problem.” None of the three men aboard the Apollo 13 ever went into space again.

A CORRECTION On January 13, 1920, the New York Times ridiculed Professor Robert Goddard, who pioneered rocket science, because they felt a rocket could never fly in the vacuum of outer space. “He seems only to lack the knowledge ladled out daily in high schools,” said the article.

Nearly 50 years later, as Apollo 11 zoomed towards the moon, the paper printed a retraction: “It is now definitely established that a rocket can function in a vacuum. The Times regrets the error.”

ASTRONAUT FACTS • The most expensive colds in history occurred on Feb. 27, 1969, on the night before a flight to orbit earth. All three of the Apollo 9 crew came down with colds, and NASA postponed the launch at a cost of $500,000. This was the first time that illness, rather than weather or technicalities, caused a delay. The three men recovered in a week and the launch went up.

• On March 17, 1834, Gottlieb Daimler, who in 1890 founded an engine and car company bearing his name, is born in Germany. In 1885, he and Wilhelm Maybach developed a new version of the four-stroke internalcombustion engine, which they attached to a wooden bicycle, creating what has been referred to as the world’s first motorcycle.

• Astronauts on their way to the moon 238,857 miles (384,403 km) away travelled at a peak of 24,679 mph (39,717 km/hr). The distance can be traversed in 60 to 70 hours. If you were to drive to the moon in your car at 70 mph (112 km/hr) it would take you 135 days to get there.

Today an astronaut can reach the moon in less time than it took a stagecoach to travel the length of Great Britain.

• News commentator Walter Cronkite was generally never at a loss for words. The one time in his career when he could think up not a single comment was during the first moon landing when he was overwhelmed. “I just went blank,” Cronkite explained.

• Astronaut Alfred Worden of the Apollo 15 mission stayed on board the command module while David Scott and James Irwin explored the surface of the moon in 1971. Because the moon suits were bulky, astronauts found it easier to hop than to walk.

• Moon-walker James Irwin of Apollo 15 left his moon jacket on the moon in order to lighten the load on the return trip home. However, he cut out and kept the fabric NASA nametag before abandoning the suit. The six-inch by twelveinch nametag, dirty and embedded with moon dust from Irwin’s three moon walks, later sold at auction for $310,500.

• The maiden name of Buzz Aldrin’s mom was Moon.

IT’S A FACT A bookie in London named David Thelfall bet $24 in 1964 that a man would walk on the moon by 1971. The odds were 1,000 to 1. When the lunar module landed, he was awarded a check for $24,000 on national TV.

Famous Canadians CHRIS HADFIELD

• Of all the little kids who say they want to be an astronaut when they grow up, Chris Hadfield was one of the few who did so, becoming the first Canadian to walk in space.

• Born in Sa rnia, Ontario, in 1959, he was nine years old during the first moon walk, which inspired him to become an astronaut.

• After attending school in Oakville and Milton, Hadfield joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets, earning his glider pilot scholarship at the age of 15, followed by a powered pilot’s scholarship at the age of 16. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces where he earned a degree in engineering.

• Next he began training as a tactical fighter pilot and then began flying intercept missions for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). He once intercepted a Soviet longrange bomber in the Arctic.

• Hadfield also became a test pilot. He has flown over 70 different types of aircraft.

• In 1992, he was accepted into the Canadian astronaut program, where he became the first Canadian ever to board the Russian Mir space station. In 2001, he became the first Canadian to walk in space when he visited the International Space Station and helped install a robotic arm called the Canadarm2.

• The Canadian Space Agency assigned him to a position at NASA in Houston, where he served as Chief of Robotics, followed by a position as Chief of International Space Station Operations.

He also served as the voice of Mission Control for 25 different space shuttle missions.

• In 2010 he spent 14 days living underwater in the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations lab (NEEMO 14) which is located 62 feet (18 m) under the surface of the ocean off the coast of Florida.

He launched on December 19, 2012, and arrived at the ISS on December 21, where he remained for the next five months.

• Hadfield achieved fame by becoming “perhaps the most social media savvy astronaut ever to leave Earth,” as described by Forbes magazine.

With the help of his tech-savvy sons, he built a Twitter following of over a million fans, as well as a blog on Tumblr and a Facebook page.

He delighted his fans with postings of many experiments in space as well as a chronicle of daily life. His interactions with Star Trek actors received wide media coverage.

• Hadfield, who arrived at the space station on Dec. 21, became the first person to record music in space when he recorded a song written by his brother on Dec. 23 and posted it online on Christmas Eve via YouTube and Twitter. The guitar he played in the song had previously been brought to the space station by another astronaut. He recorded more songs, using satellite links to perform with Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies and the Chieftains for Music Mondays. Just before returning to Earth, he recorded a version of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” which led some people to speculate on the legal issues surrounding recording a copyrighted song while in orbit, as no one is sure how far from the surface of Earth a copyright extends.

• After returning to earth, Hadfield announced his retirement, having spent 25 years in service to the Canadian Space Agency. He was eager to move back to Canada after spending nearly 30 years living in the U.S., stating that he was making good on a promise he made to his high school sweetheart wife that they would eventually move back home.

THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON We here on earth are able to see only about 59% of the moon’s surface. The reason we see only a single side of the moon is because there is an unequal density of mass in the moon. The moon is not perfectly round, but is shaped more like an egg, similar to earth. The heavy side is pulled towards Earth’s gravity and is locked into place like a magnet, turning at exactly the same speed as the earth. The term “dark side of the moon” does not mean that the other side of the moon is lacking light. Both sides of the moon receive the same amounts of sunlight. “Dark” simply means “unknown.” The surface of the moon actually has reflective properties equal to coal.

MOON FACTS The moon is the fifth largest moon in the solar system. Its surface has about the same area as Africa. If it were placed on the surface of the U.S., it would reach from San Francisco to Cleveland.

The moon’s diameter is 2,160 miles (3,476 km).

Flying once around the moon is equal to a round trip from New York to London. If the earth were the size of a fist, the moon would be the size of a postage stamp placed ten feet (3 m) away.

THE MAN IN THE MOON cont'd Together with David Levy, Eugene discovered the Shoemaker-Levy Comet which crashed into Jupiter in 1994. When he died in a car accident at the age of 69 in 1997, he was cremated. NASA placed his ashes in a capsule aboard the Lunar Prospector spacecraft.

The craft was deliberately crash landed on the moon on July 31, 1999 after orbiting the moon for 18 months as it collected data. The crash was designed to help scientists determine whether there is any water on the moon or not, so it was designed to crash where water would most likely be found: in the bottom of a deep crater at the moon’s pole, a place where sunlight never reaches and where water would forever remain ice.

The crash kicked up a huge cloud of debris which was analyzed for the presence of water.

The crash also scattered the ashes of Eugene Shoemaker across the surface of the place he most wanted to visit in his life. Since then, further studies have proven the presence of water ice in deep craters at the poles.

MORE MOON FACTS The temperature on the moon reaches 243 F. in the sun and drops to 261 below zero in the darkness of the lunar night. That’s a 500 degree difference between day and night.

Because there is no atmosphere, there is also no sound. When astronauts broke rocks with hammers, they operated in complete silence.

The surface speed record on the Moon is 11.2 mph (17 km/hr) set by the Apollo 16 lunar rover on a slightly downhill slope which covered about 16 miles (25 km).

Q: Although I don’t collect Pez candy dispensers, I have three, all depicting characters from the Peanuts comic strip. In addition to Snoopy, I have Charlie Brown and Lucy. I have been told they are collectible.

-- Art, Hammond, La. A: There are several versions of the ones you mention. The Snoopy Pez seems to be worth about $5. The other two are a little complicated. For example, Charlie smiling is worth $2, frowning about $10 and with his eyes closed, $75. The common version of Lucy is again worth about $2, with white around her eyes, $50-$75, and the one known as “Psycho Lucy” as much as $100.

Q: I have 19 Royal Doulton mugs. I am interested in finding out how much they are worth and then finding a market so I can sell them. A: One of the better price guides is “Antique Trader Royal Doulton,” edited by Kyle Husfloen, which documents more than 2,000 individual price listings of both Doulton and Royal Doulton ceramics. There is a whole chapter devoted to character mugs, which you should find helpful.

Finding a market to sell will take some effort. I suggest you contact antiques and collectibles dealers in your area to see if there is any interest.

Stand Downs: Help for Homeless Vets At one point this winter, 49 states had snow on the ground. That made it extra tough on homeless veterans trying to keep warm. The Department of Veterans Affairs has been working hard to meet its goal of eliminating veteran homelessness by fiscal year 2015 and getting veterans into permanent and stable housing, but the need is still great. Stand Downs for homeless veterans have already started all over the country.

If you’ve never organized or participated in a Stand Down, let this be the year you step forward.

There are many ways to help. Stand Downs span a variety of types of services. There are three- and four-day events with shelter, resource fairs lasting one or two days, health fairs and job fairs. Services offered can range from referrals for employment, substance-abuse treatment and health care to food, shelter, legal help, dental services and clothing. Veterans also can get benefits and Social Security help and counseling.

To participate individually, go online to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (nchv. org) and look under Service Providers.

To host a Stand Down with your veterans service group, go to the same website and read the Guide and Overview. Be sure your event is listed there as well as on the VA site at www.va.gov/homeless.

Depending on the statistics you read, the number of homeless veterans is either going up or down -- or the veterans are moving to other locations, altering the count. In any event, there are still too many veterans on the street. You can help by participating in a Stand Down.

Summer Camps 2014

What will your kids do this summer? If you hope to get them into camp, it’s time to explore the possibilities before all the slots are gone.

The variety of camp themes grows every year. If there’s an interest, there’s a camp. A short list of camp themes now includes: science, swimming, sports, arts and crafts, canoeing and kayaking, basketball, fishing, nature, computer, living history experiences And filmmaking, space, foreign-language immersion, climbing (wall and rappelling), drama, gymnastics, farming, chess, cooking, inline and roller skating, tennis, sailing, Lego robotics and engineering, golf ...

And whitewater rafting, music, writing, photography and PhotoShop, dance and voice training ... and more.

Picking a camp can help expand an interest your child already has, or can allow him or her to explore with new interests.

Where to start: Look for day camps at colleges near you. You might find drama camps (Shakespeare) or science or art, especially if the college has an art museum. If the school has an education program, ask about day camps for younger kids (run by the college students).

If you’re near a big-city zoo, inquire about camps for kids who love all things animal. They’ll do animal-related art, learn to feed the animals, explore habitats and much more.

Farm camps are a big now, with older kids spending a week at a sleep-away camp and experiencing all aspects of keeping a farm running.

These camps might include horseback riding, rodeo instruction and an introduction to 4-H activities.

High-school students might want to take advantage of math and science camps to help them get an edge on college.

On the local level, parks and recreation departments (as well as the YMCA) typically host day camps with arts and crafts, as well as swimming and daytrips to nearby attractions.

Middle-school students might enjoy a summer of service, learning about the ways they can contribute to the community. High-school students can volunteer for a summer of service to areas of need that are either local or abroad.

If money is tight, don’t assume your child can’t go to a particular camp. Ask about camperships, which can reduce your costs or even make the experience free.

County Mayo Casserole My Irish eyes start smiling just thinking of this simple but grand main dish for St. Patrick’s Day. 2 cups chopped cabbage 1/2 cup chopped celery 1/2 cup chopped onion 1 cup shredded carrots 2 (2.5-ounce) packages 90 percent lean corned beef, shredded 2 cups cooked noodles, rinsed and drained 3 (3/4-ounce) slices reduced-fat Swiss cheese, shredded 1 (10 3/4-ounce) can reduced-fat cream of mushroom soup 1/4 cup fat-free mayonnaise 1 teaspoon prepared mustard 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray an 8-by-8-inch baking dish with butter-flavored cooking spray.

2. In a large skillet sprayed with cooking spray, saute cabbage, celery, onion and carrots for 10 minutes or until tender. Stir in corned beef, noodles and Swiss cheese. Add mushroom soup, mayonnaise, mustard and black pepper.

3. Spread mixture into prepared baking dish. Bake for 30 minutes. Place baking dish on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. Divide into 4 servings.

Prune Trees Before Spring Buds Appear

Q: I’d like to trim back some of the branches on trees around my property before the growing season starts, but my wife argues that I should hire a tree service. What’s your take? -- Jim in New Hampshire A: Late winter is a good time to prune back nonflowering trees, once the coldest part of the season is past. It typically results in a burst of new growth once spring roars in.

However, if the tree is already showing buds, hold off on the project until after the leaves are fully open.

Homeowners also can prune at the end of summer -it’s a good time to cut back branches that are hanging down too far under the weight of their leaves, for example.

In either case, safety is paramount when it comes to pruning trees. Not only is working from a height a consideration, but surrounding power lines and other hazards can present extreme danger.

If the branches involved are near the ground, not close to power lines or hanging over structures, and you have the proper tools to trim the branches along with a helper or three, then go ahead. A number of resources are available online.

If the trees are very tall, if the branches involved overhang structures or wires, or if the branches are too large to safely remove with the tools at hand, don’t do

it yourself. Contact a tree service or arborist to come out and do an estimate of the time and cost involved in the project.

In either case, pruning trees will help keep them healthy and will keep your house and yard safer from falling debris. Trees will weather storms better and develop a more varied branch system. So it’s worth the effort and cost of taking care of them regularly, both on your own or with a professional tree service.

HOME TIP: Always get estimates from more than one tree-trimming service, and don’t allow work to begin until you’ve agreed to it in writing.

Creek Side Finishing Risks of Leaving a Nursing Home

Leaving a nursing home to go into home/ community care has to be a great feeling. But a study done at the University of Minnesota shows that medically, it might not be the wisest move.

Researchers looked at whether there were any differences in the rate of re-hospitalizations between Medicaid nursing home and Medicaid home/ community care.

Yes, there were, and the numbers are dramatic.

The study compared patients over age 65 who stayed in a nursing home at least 90 days before going into home/community care with those who had a nursinghome stay of at least 90 days and then stayed in the nursing home.

Leaving a nursing home increased the possibility of having a preventable re-hospitalization by 40 percent.

The Money Follows the Person program seems to be at the root of this. The MFP helps states with the costs of long-term care support with an emphasis on reducing the use of nursing homes and other medical institutions. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 has funded it through 2016 to the tune of $450 million for each year.

While it’s all well and good that the goal of some states is to use diversion programs to move patients out of nursing homes, it’s not necessarily good for the patient ... or the financial bottom line if the patient ends up in the hospital.

Consider the differences: Nursing homes and hospitals have medical care 24 hours a day as they work with doctors and perform required assessments. Home/community workers have less medical background (if any), no doctors are necessarily involved and no assessments are required.

The study offered this conclusion: If patients are to be sent out to home/community, they need long-term care, medical providers and a care plan at the time they go.

Sidelined by Cramps

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I hope you can help me with a problem that might get me kicked off the first string. I get cramps in my legs, mostly in the calves. At first, it was laughable. Now it’s not. At practices, I can sit down and wait for the cramp to go. During a game, I have to be replaced. How do I stop them? -- B.L. ANSWER: I have to tell readers that what I say applies to exercise-associated muscle cramps and not to the cramps that so many older people get when in bed. They’re both the same phenomenon, an involuntary, sustained and painful contraction of a muscle or muscles. But they’re not the same when it comes to the situation that brings them on.

The actual cause is a matter that experts have debated for years. A lack of potassium, calcium or magnesium, excessive exercise, cold weather, hot weather and dehydration have been cited as possible causes. None has been proven to be the universal cause. Muscle fatigue is another possibility. Some experts say that muscle fatigue affects the muscles’ response to spinal cord signals that prevent cramping.

Suggestions to forestall cramps are many. Hydration is a reasonable approach. An hour before a game or an exercise session, drink a quart of water. That gives enough time for the water to be absorbed. During play, keep drinking. If you are drinking a lot of fluid, switch to a sports drink to prevent a drop in potassium and sodium. Stretch your calf muscles in three daily sessions. Rising on the toes is a good calf stretch. You

can try taking a vitamin supplement that contains most of the B vitamins. Make sure vitamin B-6 is included.

To uncramp a muscle, sit on the floor with the involved leg stretched out in front of you. Grab the ball of the foot, and, while keeping the heel on the floor, pull the foot toward you and hold it in that position until the cramp eases.

Pinching the skin between the nose and the lip is another way to break a cramp.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have a Pap smear every year. I don’t have a cervix. My cancer doctor (I had breast cancer) said a Pap smear isn’t necessary for women without a cervix. I still have my ovaries and tubes and the rest of the plumbing. Do I need a yearly Pap smear? -- K.R. ANSWER: If a woman has had her uterus and cervix removed, she does not need to have Pap smears unless the uterus and cervix were removed because of cancer. Such a woman shouldn’t cut off all examinations with her doctor. She could have other pelvic problems that require periodic examinations.

However, the Pap smear part of the examination can be stopped.

In cheesecloth, wrap parsley, garlic, bay leaves and peppercorns; tie with string and place in bottom of 5 1/2- to 6-quart slow cooker. Add corned beef; top with potatoes and carrots. Pour in enough water to cover meat. Place cabbage on top. Cover slow cooker with lid and cook on low setting 10 to 12 hours or until beef is very tender.

Loneliness: The Constant Heartache The Quickest Cure for Loneliness

The quickest cure for loneliness is to find a friend. Like everything worthwhile, it is easier said than done. Lonely people need a few guiding principles in their pursuit of friendship. Here are five principles that will help you develop good friends.

Principle No. 1: You must diversify your activities. Find a variety of ways to get involved with others: take your lunch break with someone new, join a group involved in playful activity, volunteer to meet some need you identify with, or join a study group. To make friends you have to get out of the rut you are in.

Principle No. 2: You must develop social skills. If you have been alone for some time it is likely you have lost many of the social skills necessary for developing friendships. Relearn them by following these few suggestions: Get sincerely interested in other people. Learn the fine art of asking questions.
