TIDBITS® DREAMS

Every 90 minutes during the night humans enter a period of dreaming, characterized by rapid eye movements (REM) and a distinct pattern on the electroencephalograph. About a quarter of the time spent asleep is spent dreaming. It is not only sleep that is necessary— it is dreaming.

Those who are prevented from dreaming for research purposes lose their productivity and eventually may become psychotic. Come along with Tidbits as we explore our dreams!

SWEET DREAMS • During REM sleep the body is almost totally paralyzed. Only the diaphragm, intestines, heart, blood and eyes are not affected.

• When sleeping volunteers were awakened during REM sleep, they remembered their dream 80% of the time. But when awakened during non-REM sleep, they recalled their dreams only 11% of the time.

• When a stimulus was provided during the dream, it would often be worked into the dream. In one study, a few drops of water were sprayed into the dreamer’s face. One subject had been dreaming he was acting in a play, when suddenly a hole opened up in the roof and the rain came through. About 40% of subjects reported dreaming about the spray of water. But only 23% incorporated a flash of light into their dream, and 9% incorporated a bell tone.

SWEET DREAMS (cont’d) • Five minutes after the end of the dream, 50% of the content is forgotten, and after ten minutes about 90% is forgotten.

• Our brain waves are more active when we are dreaming than when we are awake. Blood flow to the brain increases during dreaming.

• We usually spend more than two hours each night dreaming. We dream at least four to six times a night.

• Babies in the womb dream. Babies born prematurely will spend 10% more time dreaming than full-term babies.

• People never snore while they’re dreaming.

People never sleepwalk when they’re dreaming.

• It’s not uncommon for deaf people to use sign language in their sleep • Those born blind experience dreams involving things such as emotion, sound, and smell rather than sight. They dream without experiencing rapid eye movement.

• Chronic use of barbiturates or alcohol can lead to nightmares, especially after their use is discontinued. The same sleeping pills that people take to regulate their sleep can cause profoundly disturbed sleep.

• The continuous brain recordings that led to the discovery of REM sleep were not done until 1953, partly because the scientists involved were concerned about wasting paper. The paper needed to do an EEG of just one night’s sleep was about half a mile long. Today the information is digitized so no paper is needed.

ANIMAL DREAMS • Nearly all mammals have true REM sleep.

Dolphins and anteaters are the only mammals who do not have REM sleep. However, with dolphins, one half of the brain will show a typical sleep EEG, while the other half has a normal waking EEG. During the following sleep cycle, the brain halves will be reversed.

Tales of Feral Cats

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I wanted to add to your recent columns about feral cats. Maybe some can’t be tamed, but my friends and family would disagree.

I recently visited with friends in North Carolina and met their beautiful cat, “Stormy.”

Their story is this: They had been feeding this feral cat for some time outside, and of course, he wouldn’t come near them. Then one night they heard a howling outside. Looking out, they saw a mountain lion or panther, whatever they call them there, threatening Stormy. They opened the door, and Stormy came in, and never went outside again.

Another story I have is of a feral cat that was “adopted” by my son’s chickens! He has six chickens in his backyard in Florida, and one day someone dropped off a very young kitten.

He got into the coop, but instead of running or attacking, the kitten assumed those chickens

were his parents! Now a full-grown cat, he remains mostly feral and won’t come inside my son’s house, but he hangs out in the chicken coop daily with his new family.

A newborn kitten, puppy, rat, or hamster experiences only REM sleep, while a newborn guinea pig (which is much more developed at birth) has almost no REM sleep at all. Some birds and even fish have been shown to have the rapid eye movement characteristic of the state of dreaming.

• In one experiment, monkeys were strapped into chairs in front of a video screen and taught that they must repeatedly press a bar in front of them whenever a certain image appeared on the screen. If they didn’t, they would receive a shock. After several days of intense training which included sleep deprivation, the monkeys were allowed to fall asleep, still strapped to the chair, while their sleep was monitored.

Not long after entering the REM dream stage, the animals began rapidly pressing the bar in front of them as they dreamed about the video screen.

IT’S A FACT • Vitamin B complex and St. John’s Wort have been shown to produce more vivid dreams.

DREAMING UP AN ANSWER • Making lead shot for shotguns was difficult and time-consuming in the 1800s. Lead was rolled into sheets and the sheets were chopped into bits, or it was drawn into wire and cut into pieces. The resulting shot was expensive and of poor quality. James Watt, inventor of the first practical steam engine, had a recurring dream one week. In it, he seemed to be in a heavy rainstorm but instead of water drops, he was being pelted with tiny lead pellets that rolled around on the ground. Intrigued by the dream, Watt experimented by dropping molten lead from the top of a church tower into a waterfilled moat. When he recovered the pellets he found that they were perfectly round. To this day, lead shot is made by the process Watt dreamed up. (cont’d)

Q: I have a Coca-Cola tray from 1924 entitled “Touring Car,” which I believe is worth in the $500-$750 range. Stamped on the back is information that it was manufactured by the Ohio Art Company under license from the Coca-Cola Company. Where can I sell it?

-- Frances, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: Your tray is not an original, but rather a reproduction from 1988. It was sold in a set of four: “Touring Car,” “Village Blacksmith,” “Sea Captain” and “1908 Calendar Girl.” A reproduction is worth much less than an original item. I I found the set of four Coca-Cola trays on eBay sealed and in factory packaging for $75. I also found a single “Touring Car” tray offered for $11 at the same site.

One of the better reference books is “Petretti’s Soda Pop Collectibles and Price Guide” by Allan Petretti and published by Krause Books. *** Q: I have a Mary Hartline doll that I played with during the early 1950s. It is the Mary Hartline majorette doll, but the one I have is missing its baton. I would like to know its current value. -- Rita, Monroe, North Carolina A: Mary Hartline was born Oct. 19, 1926, in

Hillsboro, Illinois. She eventually became a fashion model. In 1949, Hartline was hired to appear in the network TV show “Super Circus.”

He made his first appearance in 1942 as Supermouse, and was renamed Mighty Mouse in 1944.

He couldn’t figure out where to locate the eye of the needle. The eye of the needle is always located in the end of the needle furthest from the point, but all his designs failed to work properly. He was at wits end and rapidly running out of money when he fell asleep one night and had a strange dream. In the dream he was being led to his execution. The king had ordered him killed because he could not design a sewing machine. He was surrounded by guards who were all armed with spears that were pierced at the head. When Howe awoke, he realized this was the solution to the problem. In short order he had invented a sewing machine whose needle had the eye at the head, now the universal design.

• Robert Louis Stevenson wrote a story called “The Traveling Companion” and sent it to an editor. The editor rejected the story saying, “This is an ingenious piece of work but your plot is weak.” Stevenson was at a loss to figure out how to improve the tale. Then one night he re-read the story before falling asleep. In a dream he had that night, he saw his story being acted out, with a different plot twist. When he awoke, he wrote down the details of the dream and then re-worked the story. The result was “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.”

• Rudyard Kipling once had a dream in which he saw himself at a formal function in a big hall with rough stone flooring. There was a crowd of people around him and his view was obstructed by a fat man in front of him. A man touched him on the sleeve and said, “May I have a word with you?” Then he awoke.

It was six weeks later when this dream was fulfilled down to the last detail when Kipling attended an official gathering. Although the man who wanted to speak to him had nothing consequential to say, Kipling was amazed at the fulfillment of the dream.

Amazing Animals ANIMAL SKIN • The skin on the back of a cat’s neck is five times thicker than it is on their hind feet.

• Dolphins don’t have waterproof skin. Instead, it is actually waterlogged, cutting down on friction as the dolphin swims.

• In the 1700s, trappers could get 50 cents for a doe skin, but a dollar for a buck skin. That’s why a dollar is now called a “buck.”

• Ernest Ebbitson of England spent 30 years trying to breed a frog with transparent skin in order to avoid the destruction of so many frogs that are dissected each year in biology classes.

• When First Lady Jackie Kennedy wore a Somali leopard skin coat in 1962, the price of leopard coats tripled from $6,000 to $18,000 and five years later Somali leopards were declared an endangered species.

• Earthworms have no lungs. They breathe through their skin.

• The skin of a shark is not covered with scales, but with denticles, which are akin to tiny teeth.

A shark can do much damage just by brushing against a human. Leather made from the skin of a tiger shark has up to 10 times the tensile strength of ox hide.

• The fur of a polar bear is actually transparent, which reflects light and appears white in the same way that snow is clear but looks white.

The skin of a polar bear is pure black in order to absorb heat from the sun which is transferred by the clear fur.

• Pig skin has no sweat glands. To keep cool, pigs prefer a dip in cool, clean water. If that is not available, mud will do. Mud also protects them from lice and other parasites. Pigs prefer clean pens, and will always relieve themselves in the corner furthest from where they sleep.

• A cow has sweat glands only in the nose.

In simple terms, salt over-stimulates the slug’s skin glands, causing them to involuntarily secret large amounts of their bodily fluids, often to lethal extents. Salt causes them to basically sweat to death. The active ingredient in most commercial slug poisons is metaldehyde, which has the same effect on slugs as salt.

Metaldehyde will last through rain storms without dissolving.

• Before the advent of firearms, natives of South America were well known for hunting with poisoned arrows. The toxin was obtained from the skin of a number of brightly colored frogs commonly known as dart frogs. The most notable species is the one named Phyllobates terribilis. The poison manufactured by this frog makes “strychnine look like table salt,” according to one researcher. When the frog is under stress, it secretes an oily white poison from glands in its skin. By tormenting a single frog, hunters could collect enough poison to dip about 50 arrows. The poison would remain deadly for about 6 months.

• Found only in Central and South America, dart frogs are one of the most poisonous animals known to man. Just one frog can produce enough poison to kill 20,000 mice. It takes just .006 of an ounce to kill a grown man. A single golden dart-poison frog contains enough poison to kill 2,200 people. There is still no known antidote. Scientists are studying the substance, hoping to discover clues to cystic fibrosis and other neurological diseases. Extracts may one day prove useful as heart stimulants or anesthetics. One hurdle standing in the way of research is the fact that dart frogs caught in the wild and held in captivity gradually lose their toxicity because they are not eating the insects (such as ants) from which they gather alkaloids that they transform into poison.

INSOMNIA • Half the population of the U.S. suffers from insomnia at some point. Insomnia is almost twice as common in women as it is in men.

• When deprived of sleep, senses diminish, reactions slow, motor speed decreases, and the memory fails. The body temperature drops, and hallucinations and/or psychosis and paranoia may result if sleeplessness is continued. The body will be completely restored to normal after a period of sleep.

• In sleep-deprived people, it is most difficult for them to stay awake between the hours of 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m.

• In a sleep lab, volunteers who got eight hours of sound sleep were tested for reaction time on a number of different tasks. The following night they were shorted on their sleep. When the tests were repeated, it was not surprising that their marks fell as their reaction time increased. Following a normal 8-hour sleep, reaction times returned to normal. The following night, they were allowed to sleep more than 8 hours. Researchers were surprised to see that their reaction time decreased after over-sleeping just as it had when they underslept.

• In a sleep deprivation study, subjects were asked to sit in front of a computer screen and press a button each time the letter X appeared. At the beginning of the experiment, the subjects performed flawlessly. But after two nights without sleep, only one in four Xs were noted, and the button was often pressed for the wrong letters. This is due to microsleep sessions, in which the body falls asleep for mere seconds.

• Sleep-deprived subjects can perform almost any test perfectly is it’s a brief test. However, severe impairment occurs if tests are sustained, repetitive tasks.

• Each year, sleep-related errors and accidents cost U.S. businesses an estimated $56 billion, cause nearly 25,000 deaths, and result in 2.5 million disabling injuries.

• The record for the longest period without sleep was set by Maureen Weston who stayed awake for 18 days, 21 hours, 40 minutes during a rocking chair marathon.

She reported hallucinations, paranoia, blurred vision, slurred speech, memory problems, and concentration lapses, but made a full recovery after the contest ended. “The Guinness Book of Records” stopped awarding records in this category to discourage people from engaging in dangerous behavior.

By Keith Roach, M. D, Why Is Alcohol Banned With Antibiotics?

DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m confused about the medical rule not to drink any alcohol while on antibiotics. After doing Internet research on reputable sites, I found, to my surprise, that the overwhelming medical opinion is that moderate alcohol use does not render most antibiotics ineffective. I do understand that alcohol should not be used with specific antibiotics, e.g. Flagyl, because of adverse physical reactions. I read that the warning not to mix alcohol with antibiotics stems from doctors fearing patients taking antibiotics to cure STDs would have lowered inhibitions and engage in unprotected sex. Could you please set the record straight for the public on this subject? -- K.L. ANSWER: I never learned the rule that alcohol shouldn’t be taken while on antibiotics, with the exception of metronidazole (Flagyl), the combination of which causes extremely unpleasant nausea and vomiting, headache, shortness of breath and other symptoms. This reaction can happen to a lesser extent with sulfamethoxazole (a component of Bactrim or Septra) as well as other, less commonly used antibiotics such as tinidazole and some cephalosporins. The antituberculosis drug isoniazid can cause liver damage in combination with excess alcohol.

In general, if you are sick enough to need antibiotics, it is prudent to avoid alcohol, and certainly to avoid excess alcohol. But alcohol does not render antibiotics ineffective. Preventing STDs is much better than treating them, since not all can be cured.

Part of being sexually responsible is making good decisions. You are correct that people are more likely to make unwise decisions with even moderate amounts of alcohol. That’s true with or without antibiotics. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I suffered from a very painful case of plantar fasciitis for longer than a year when my husband and I (both in our 40s) discovered that we were expecting a baby. I was terrified over the prospect for several reasons, including the already painful state of my feet. It turned out that my plantar fasciitis was completely cured by the end of my pregnancy.

Now, at 47, with a darling 3-year-old, I’m wondering if there is any way of preventing the condition from returning. My OB/GYN guessed that perhaps the hormones that make a pregnant woman more “stretchy” are behind my cure. Do you have any ideas about this? -- B.R. ANSWER: Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation in the strong band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the toes and supports the foot. The major symptom is pain with walking, especially with the first step of the day.

Pregnant women are indeed more likely to suffer from plantar fasciitis. Most authorities feel it is the relatively fast weight gain of a normal pregnancy, but some blame the hormone relaxin, which loosens the pelvic and other ligaments.

This can change your gait and cause abnormal stresses on the feet, causing plantar fasciitis.

Your obstetrician is suggesting that relaxin is acting on your already-existing plantar fasciitis, which I haven’t heard of, but it is an interesting thought.

For prevention, regular stretching of the calf muscles, wearing shoes with good support and maintaining a healthy weight can help prevent recurrence. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Make SaltDough Holiday Ornaments What do wire out of the toolbox, salt in the cupboard and twigs from the yard have in common?

They’re some of the makings of a family holiday craft you can enjoy this weekend. The holidays are busy, so discover how nice it is to pause and do something fun together.

When you stir up a simple dough of flour, salt and water, creativity is endless as you shape eye-catching ornaments for your tree, or build a mini indoor snowman.

This traditional salt-dough recipe, which is easy to mix and roll out or sculpt, is a keeper. Once the creations are slow baked in an oven, grab paints, glue and glitter from your craft drawer, buttons and beads from a jar, and get crafting.

Here’s the basic stuff you need: 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup salt 1 cup water Medium-size mixing bowl, rolling pin, cookie sheet Toothpick or straw Acrylic paints White household glue, optional Ribbon or wire Cookie cutters (see “Extra Idea”) Mix the flour, salt and water together in a medium-size bowl. Knead several times on a floured board or countertop. If the dough is too dry, just add a bit more water. It it’s too sticky, add flour.

Now you are ready to shape and bake the dough.

Here are two ideas to get your started: MAKE HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS Roll out the dough with a rolling pin to 1/2-inch thickness. Dip cookie cutters in flour and cut out your favorite shapes. Poke a hole near the top with a toothpick or straw for hanging on a tree, garland or through ribbons on the top of presents.

MAKE WHIMSICAL SCULPTURES Play with some of the clay in your hands and shape into a snowman, house, bird or reindeer.

Bake the cutouts or small sculptures on a tray in an oven heated to 250 F for about 1 1/2 hours, or until dough is hard to the touch. Cool completely on a rack.

Paint with acrylic paints and let dry. For extra shine, coat with white household glue. Thread ribbon or wire through ornaments, twist or tie.

Extra Idea: Make your own cookie cutter shapes for small hands to grab onto by bending and shaping with pliers the open end of small tomato sauce cans. Put Your Money in the Bank In the halcyon days of the 1970s and ‘80s, a car company then-called Datsun used to saturate the airwaves during televised sporting events.

Famous for its sporty “Z” cars (the 240Z, 260Z and 280ZX), Datsun extolled the gas-saving virtues of its brand, cheerfully urging would-be drivers to “put your money in the bank, not in the tank.”

That admonition would work well in today’s world of boxing, too. Last year saw the passing of the “Greatest of All Time” (GOAT) and the continued win streak of “The Best Ever” (TBE).

While Muhammad Ali can no longer reap the dividends from his illustrious career, Floyd “Money” Mayweather is still in fighting shape at 39 years of age, and he is in possession of what is really the sole marketing gimmick left in professional boxing -- an unbeaten record of 49-0.

If you were a betting man, you would think that an ego-driven boxer who has never really been challenged or hit hard more than once outside of the “Sugar” Shane Mosley fight, would like the all-time unbeaten boxing record all to himself.

He’s tied with Rocky Marciano, but your bettor’s hunch just may prove to be correct: Mayweather himself has trademarked the term “TBE 50-0.”

So conditions appear to right.

Mayweather is the greatest defensive boxer who ever lived. I’ve watched thousands of fights, and I have never seen anyone protect himself any better. Ali was harder to hit, and he moved around the ring better, but Mayweather’s ability to fend off blows like a horse flicking off flies with his tail is unmatched across any era. The problem is that his style is epically boring, and as boxing continues to look for its next ratings savior, he’s not helping.

Enter Conor McGregor, the baddest man on the planet. He holds two UFC belts in two different weight classes and has a record of 21-3, which translated to a boxing record would be more like 100-3 (factor in that MMA fighters use more of their body to strike, and the sheer overall violence). With the loss of Rhonda Rousey, he is the most visible and popular champion in the fight game.

Also, he is game to fight Mayweather. Let’s face it, Mayweather has nobody to face who would command the nine-figure payout he is demanding. Nobody is going to fall for another pay-per-view disaster like Mayweather-Pacquio II. A fight against McGregor would more than live up to the hype, if only to showcase the merits of boxing as a fighting style as it continues to lose mindshare to MMA. Also, it would be an easy fight for Mayweather.

Vegas oddsmakers already have the fight at -2250/+980 in favor of Mayweather (meaning you’d have to wager $2,250 on Mayweather to win $100, $100 on McGregor to win $980), but you don’t need to be an expert to call this one.

Keep your money in the bank -- McGregor won’t tank, but Mayweather has plenty of gas left in his.

It would be the greatest upset in sports history and certainly worth watching ... that much you can bet. Let’s get it on.

1 cup butter or margarine (2 sticks) 2 cups confectioners’ sugar 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 large egg yolk 2 cups blanched almonds, ground About 1 cup red candied cherries, each cut in half 1. Heat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, with mixer at low speed, beat butter with confectioners’ sugar until blended. Increase speed to high; beat until light and creamy. At low speed, beat in flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, salt and egg yolk.

Knead in almonds.

2. Roll dough into 1-inch balls (dough will be crumbly). Place balls, 2 inches apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet. Gently press a cherry half on top of each ball. Bake 15 minutes, or until bottoms of cookies are lightly browned.

3. With wide spatula, transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough and cherries. Makes about 6 dozen cookies. * Each serving: About 75 calories, 4g total fat (1g saturated), 1g protein, 9g carb., 3mg cholesterol, 40mg sodium.

Did you get plenty to eat over Thanksgiving? Many seniors didn’t.

Studies have revealed that far too many seniors (and young families, as well) are too embarrassed to ask for help, especially when it involves accepting that help in a public place, such as a food pantry.

If your situation is to the point where you’re going hungry, there’s no need to be ashamed of going to a food pantry. The folks who run them are very helpful and nice. In some places you’ll be given a pre-boxed load of groceries, while in others you’ll be able to go down the aisles with a cart and pick out what you need and want. There might be a sign above each section telling you to take one or two or three of each item. If a staff member smiles and whispers for you to take a couple more, do that.

At a food pantry, you’re likely to receive canned fruits, vegetables, meats, tuna and stews; hot and cold cereals, as well as grits; pasta, beans, rice and single-serve containers of macaroni and cheese; coffee or tea; rolls and bread; fresh poultry, dairy and drinks.

Do you receive Meals on Wheels? Ask for help in a more private way by talking to your delivery person about how and where to access more food from a food pantry. You also can contact the Council on Aging (www. ncoa.org), a senior center or local churches to ask about food banks in your area. Transportation might even be provided if you don’t drive.

Remember: The point of adequate nutrition is to stay healthy. The food is out there. You just need to accept what you need. And with cold weather, we all need more calories. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Social Security, VA Join Forces The Department of Veterans Affairs is partnering with Social Security to speed up applications for Social Security disability by sending personal medical information over the Internet. They’ll send this information via the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER) Program. The VA currently sends health info to 775 hospitals, 427 health centers, 142 nursing homes, 8,441 pharmacies and nearly 12,000 clinics. Social Security now joins the list of recipients of personal health data.

If you ever see a community health-care provider, you’ll be asked to sign a Form 100485 giving permission for your information be shared with the VA over the Internet. Here are a couple of Q&As from a brochure about the program: * Can I choose to share only certain part of my health information? No, at least not right now. * Is my information secure? Yes, because it is sent through the Internet using The Sequoia Project’s eHealth Exchange. It’s a national network for secure sharing of medical information that covers 50 percent of all hospitals in the U.S. Here’s what I would like to know: * If the VA and SSA are now working together, will everyone have to sign that consent form to have medical information forwarded over the Internet to the Social Security offices? * What about the medical opinions of outside doctors who were consulted for VA appeals?

Will those files be included, and how? * If the outside doctor’s opinion was used in the Social Security decision to provide disability benefits, will the VA then have to use that information in its own decisions? * If only an electronic record at the VA exists, how is the veteran to see what is being sent to Social Security?
