Did you know that one in six people lives on an island? This week, Tidbits takes a little island getaway, bringing you facts about “any land mass completely surrounded by water.” ● Not all islands are alike! Continental islands lie on the shelf of a continent, for example, Greenland, which lies on the shelf of North America, and Great Britain on that of Europe. Oceanic islands do not sit on a continental shelf. Most, such as the Hawaiian Islands, were formed by volcanic activity. The Hawaiian Islands, a 137-island chain, are the exposed peaks of a massive undersea mountain range. They were visited by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1778, and he dubbed them the Sandwich Islands after his friend, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montagu. ● Each of the eight main Hawaiian Islands has a nickname. The largest, Hawaii, is of course, the Big Island. Next in size, Maui, is the Valley Isle, followed by Oahu, the Gathering Place. Fourth in size, Kauai is the Garden Isle, Molokai is the Friendly Isle, Lanai is nicknamed the Pineapple Isle, Niihau is the Forbidden Isle, and the smallest of the eight, Kaho’olawe is the Target Isle. turn the page for more!

ISLANDS continued ● Although Australia is completely surrounded by water, geographically it is considered a continent rather than an island.

It’s not only too big to be formally classified as an island, it also sits on its own tectonic plate.

Because of this, the title of world’s largest island goes to Greenland, a continental island lying on North America’s continental shelf. ● Located between the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans, Greenland has an area of 836,330 square miles (2,166,086 sq. km), with 81% of that area covered by an ice sheet. If that ice sheet were to melt away completely, the sea level of the world would rise by more than 23 feet (7 m).

Most of the island’s 57,600 people live along the coasts, the only areas that are ice-free. It’s the most sparsely populated country in the world.

Although Greenland’s main export is shrimp, the island is rich in natural resources, including zinc, lead, iron, gold, and platinum. Even diamonds are mined there. ● Contrast Greenland’s population of 57,600 in 836,330 square miles with that of Sumatra. Sumatra’s area equals about 21% of Greenland’s, yet this island is home to 50 million people! Located in Indonesia, Sumatra is the world’s sixth largest island, but is the world’s largest volcanic island. ● Just south of the Arctic Circle is the second largest volcanic island, Iceland, home to the world’s largest concentration of geysers.

Over 14% of its surface is covered by lakes and glaciers, and there are 130 volcanic mountains on the island. Iceland has the second-highest quality of life in the world, as well as one of the world’s highest life expectancies. ● Sitting in the mouth of the Amazon River in Brazil is Maraj_, the world’s largest island that is completely surrounded by fresh water. It’s about one-third the size of New York state, and compares in size to Switzerland. About 250,000 live on Maraj_, which lies right on the equator.

Adventurous Dog Ignores Owner DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My terrier "Bill" drives me nuts with his disobedience! Last week he jumped out of the car when I stopped at the ATM, and ran along the streets and through traffic, barking at everything as I chased him. Eventually he turned up at the house three hours later and just strutted in. I had to take a vacation day from work to deal with this. It isn't the first time.

What can I do? -- Wits' End in Springfield, Mass.

DEAR WITS' END: I'm sure you've heard this before, but Bill needs you to be more authoritative. He doesn't recognize you as someone he has to listen to -- and the consequences of this have become frustrating and, obviously, dangerous.

This is not irreversible, but you need to change a few things. First, Bill should never, ever be loose in the car.

A pet seat restraint to which his leash is attached, or a car

crate, must be used at all times.

Second, begin retraining Bill in how to come when called.

Put him on a longer leash (6 feet), let him run out to the end of the leash, then call him. If he doesn't come, reel him in, then let him go to the end again and repeat the call.

Once he comes on his own, reward him.

Third, retrain your command voice. Bill won't respond to a pleading or stressed-out voice. Use a strong, calm voice when calling him.

Fourth, spend a lot more time with your dog -- he's got a ton of energy, clearly. Take him for daily, long walks, and reinforce his obedience training daily as well -- all while leashed. Don't let Bill have his way any longer.

Whenever possible, I like to give a homemade gift rather than a store bought, but sometimes I just don’t have the time in the kitchen that I’d like.

Ironically, the time of year I’d like to cook the most is also the time of year I have the least amount of time to do it.

Everyone knows that candies taste better if you let the kids do it. they’re sweeter than us. Getting the kids in the kitchen is important to me, but especially at Christmas. If I’m make something for them to give, I want them to enjoy the happiness and learn the importance of giving something you personally had a hand in making. In my mind this is one of those activities that helps them to grow up with their heads in the right place.

Easily turnout Christmas candies in very little time with a low budget. You’ll need: 1 package of chocolate almond bark 36 mini muffin liners 2 cups Rice Crispies Melt almond bark and stir in cereal. Spoon mixture into muffin liners, allow 1 to 2 hours to set.

When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at the Goose. Remember every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a different Wild Game!

ISLANDS continued ● The official name for a group, cluster, or collection of geographically-related islands is archipelago. Familiar archipelagos include the Canary Islands, the Bahamas, the Caymans, Indonesia, the British Isles, and the Philippines.

The Philippines consist of more than 7,100 islands. Total land area is about the same as the state of Arizona, yet its population exceeds 97 million people. About 20 measurable earthquakes occur there daily. Over 170 individual languages are spoken in the Philippines. ● The Guinness Book of Records lists Bishop Rock as the world’s smallest island with a building on it. It’s 151 feet (46 m) long by 52.5 feet (16 m) wide and is situated at the end of Britain’s Isles of Scilly, 30 miles from England.

Bishop has nothing but an uninhabited 160-ft (49-m) tall lighthouse, completed in 1858. The Rock has been the cause of many shipwrecks over the decades, including one wreck resulting in 2,000 deaths. The lighthouse’s last keepers left in 1992, and it has operated automatically since then. ● One of America’s newest national parks is located 60 miles (96 kg) off the coast of southern California. Channel Islands National Park was named such in 1980, and is home to the largest accumulation of blue whales in the world. The last permanent lighthouse in the country was built on the archipelago’s 699-acre Anacapa Island in 1932.

Its capital city Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area in the world with a population of over 30 million people. There are 109 active volcanoes throughout the islands, more than any other country. Its location at the junction of four tectonic plates makes Japan vulnerable to powerful earthquakes and tsunamis. The March, 2011 earthquake, which registered 8.9 on the Richter scale, was the cause of nearly 16,000 deaths. Japan has a 100% literacy rate, one of the world’s highest life expectancies, and a remarkably low crime rate. ● From the mid-1700s until the late 1830s, Massachusetts’ Nantucket Island was the whaling capital of the world. About 150 whaling ships made port there during that time. Today this 47.8-sq-mile (124 sq. km) island is most famous today as a tourist destination. During the summer months the population swells from 10,000 to 50,000. Its home values are listed as among the highest in the U.S. ● Not every island is formed by natural forces. Japan’s Kansai International Airport is located on an artificial island in Osaka Bay, a project that began in 1987. A small rocky island, usually too small for habitation, is known as a skerry.

FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD: PEARL S. BUCK The Good Earth won the Pulitzer Prize for literature in 1932 and continues as one of the most popular novels of all time. How much do you know about its author, Pearl S. Buck? Here are some details about this prolific writer. ● Pearl Sydenstricker was born to Southern Presbyterian missionaries in 1892. Although they were stationed in China, Pearl was born during a U.S. furlough, but moved to China at three months of age. Her mother had established a dispensary in China, where she ministered to Chinese women, while Pearl’s father spent months in the Chinese country side seeking converts. ● Pearl attended a women’s college in Lynchburg, Virginia, then returned to China shortly afterward to care for her ailing mother.

After marrying an agricultural economist, the Bucks held teaching positions at China’s Nanking University. ● The couple welcomed a daughter, Carol, in 1921, who was a victim of Phenylketonura, or PKU, a genetic disorder that left her profoundly mentally challenged. Carol’s specialized care required large amounts of money, and the Bucks’ financial situation became so perilous that Pearl, a born storyteller, began writing to earn extra income. In the 1920s, she published essays and stories in several magazines. ● Times were tense in China in the 1920s, and in 1927, she and her husband narrowly escaped a violent battle known as the Nanking Incident.

They were rescued by American gunboats, and spent a year in Japan before moving back to a turbulent China. ● Pearl’s first novel East Wind, West Wind, was published when she was 38 in 1930.

The following year, The Good Earth, the novel that would bring her international fame, was published. Having lived in China for most of her life, Pearl had plenty of experience in writing the story of impoverished Chinese farmers struggling to survive. The novel was the best-selling book of both 1931 and 1932, and was translated into 30 languages, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1932. In 1937, the MGM film version, three years in the making, was released and was nominated for five Academy Awards. A 500-acre California farm was transformed into a replica of a Chinese farm for the movie. Years later, the book regained popularity when it was chosen by television host Oprah Winfrey for Oprah’s Book Club.

BUCK continued ● Two books followed to make The Good Earth into a trilogy, Sons in 1932, and A House Divided in 1935. ● Needing better care for her daughter, Pearl, single after 18 years, moved to the U.S. permanently in 1933. She returned to school and earned a second Master’s degree. All the while she continued to write and in 1938, she became the first American women to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Most of her writing featured China as the setting. ● Pearl later married an editor from her publisher’s company, and the couple adopted six children during their 25 years together. Over the course of her life, she published over 70 books, story collections, an autobiography, poetry, children’s books, and a cookbook. When she passed away in 1973, her tombstone of her own design featured her name inscribed in Chinese characters.

MANHATTAN Although there are more than three dozen islands situated in the waters of New York City, Manhattan is the one we hear the most about.

Here are some facts about the smallest of the city’s five boroughs. ● About 1.6 million people live in Manhattan, about 70,500 people per square mile. ● Manhattan was originally inhabited by the Lenape Indians. It’s believed that explorer Giovanni da Verrazano was the first European to visit the island. But the area was not mapped until after the exploration of Englishman Henry Hudson in 1609. ● A Dutch fur trading settlement on neighboring Governors Island was founded in 1624, and the following year, the Dutch began construction of a fort on Manhattan, an island they called New Amsterdam. This 1625 completion is recognized as the birthdate of New York City.

Yet in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, it was flanked by extravagant mansions of the rich and famous, including Andrew Carnegie, William A. Clark, and Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt’s home on the corner of Fifth Avenue and West 57th was six stories tall and was and remains the largest private residence ever built in New York City. It was demolished in 1927 and is the current site of the Bergdorf Goodman department store. William A. Clark’s 121-room home cost $7 million to build in 1907 (about $162 million in today’s money), and only stood for 20 years. Only a very few mansions have survived, including Carnegie’s home, which is now the Cooper Hewitt Museum. ● The annual New Year’s Eve ball drop took place in Times Square for the first time in 1907, and the celebration has been held every year since. The two largest gatherings in Times Square have been the August, 1945 celebration marking the end of World War II, and the millennial celebration on December 31, 1999. VA Oversight The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held hearings recently about conference planning spending by officials at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Planning trips to Nashville, Dallas and Orlando, meant to scope out locations for training conferences, turned into lovely, overpriced vacations for some.

Here are some of the highlights of testimony given to the committee: ● Multiple employees accepted gifts: A big no-no, especially as the gifts appeared to be given in exchange for hotel bookings for conferences. Among the gifts accepted were: complimentary lodging and upgraded rooms, gift baskets, entertainment tickets, spa treatments and a helicopter ride. Employees didn't deduct the value of the free meals they received, as required.

One planner apparently solicited goodies for his family, which he brought to the conference. ● Approximately $762,000 was labeled as unnecessary and/or wasteful spending as the amount included promo items and awards, some of which had a value of up to $5,500. ● Conference spending was approved based on 3,000 attendees, but only 1,800 showed up.

A factoid: Conferences that will cost between $20,000 and $500,000 need varying levels of approval in advance, all the way up the chain. Conferences costing more than $500,000 aren't allowed. How is it then that two Orlando conferences cost $6.1 million? How did the tab for a Las Vegas conference exceed $800,000?

One investigator went so far as to say that one specific official lied under oath, a fact bolstered by witnesses. They'd spent $50,000 for a 15-minute parody film about Gen. George Patton, but that official said he had no knowledge of it. He subsequently resigned. At the hearing he repeatedly refused to answer questions.

As usual, we're now told that they'll do better, they've taken steps, they'll have more oversight, they'll retrain planning personnel and so on. Haven't we heard that before? Over and over and over?

For Advertising Call (740) 446-4543 Painting in Winter Can be Tricky Q: Can I paint rooms during the wintertime? My friend says it's impossible to do because the weather is too cold. What do you say? -- Jeanine H., via email A: It's not impossible, but in colder climates it certainly can be more difficult. The main reason is that rooms need to be well-ventilated when painting; otherwise the room is hazardous to be in. It'll need to continue to be ventilated while it's drying, in order to keep humidity down, which means the windows will be wide open in the middle of winter.

In more-temperate regions, painting in winter really isn't a problem. Not only can you ventilate a room without getting frozen out of the house, but the paint cures more evenly. In below-freezing temperatures, a latex-based paint may not dry as evenly or cure as well.

But painters do interior work in cold weather all the time. How do they do it without sealing off the room from the rest of the house? You could take a few hints from them.

Professional painters often use a reverse-air system.

Rigged into one of the windows, it pulls air from the room to the outside of the house at a constant rate, so that fumes don't seep into the rest of the house -- and the room being painted stays at a comfortable temperature.

Even without such a system, you can paint a room by setting up a fan in the window pointing outward, and keeping your heating system registers open in the the room. Wear a respirator mask when painting to avoid breathing in fumes, and keep children out.

If you need to add more than one coat or the paint seems to be taking longer than usual to dry, consider bringing in a dehumidifier to remove more moisture from the air and speed drying.

Butternut Squash Soup

Add applesauce to your butternut squash soup for a flavor that will bring you back to childhood. Brownbag lunches in grade school, baby's messy smile at her first taste. Applesauce is a treat everyone can enjoy, since it's naturally fat-free and low in calories. We used the unsweetened variety -- the best ones list apples as their sole ingredient -- to give our easy recipe a rich, fruity flavor.

2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1 package (20-ounce) chopped butternut squash 3 cups water 1 1/2 cups applesauce 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1. In 4-quart saucepan, melt one tablespoon butter on medium-high. Stir in ground ginger. Add chopped butternut squash and water. Heat to boiling on high.

Reduce heat to medium; cook 15 minutes or until squash is tender.

2. Stir in applesauce; cook 1 minute. Carefully puree in blender until smooth. Stir in one tablespoon butter, salt and pepper. Serves 4.

You Can Overcome Any Obstacle Significance in life is all about overcoming obstacles.

If you want to become a brain surgeon, riverraft the Amazon, or become a world-class salesperson, then you better get started figuring your way around, over or through a thousand obstacles.

Here’s why: The sizes of your obstacles are in direct proportion to the sizes of your objectives. Set big goals and you’ll face some huge challenges; attempt nothing significant and little will stand in your way.

Here is one simple suggestion for overcoming the obstacles that try to keep you from achieving your goals: take one step forward. No big leap, no jump to the top, no blind swan dive over the cliff; just one step forward. I give this advice for three reasons.

First of all because one step is all you can ever take at a time. When I decided to get some post-graduate education I had a wife, three children, a full-time job, and no money for tuition. So I took one class – that’s all – just one class. And a few years later I had earned my Master’s Degree.

The second reason I suggest you take one step forward is because in many cases that one step will cause your obstacle to flee like a scared cat. Many of the obstacles you see in front of you appear much larger than they actually are. Face them, step into them, confront them with even the smallest step forward and you will

notice they are not the imposing monsters you once thought.

The third reason a step forward is what you need to take is that the accumulation of those small steps will grant you victory over time. Your determination will break down resistances and your persistence will power you through problems. ¬But do you know the biggest obstacle you will face each day? It is not the mountain in the path before you; it is the monster of fear inside you. You are the biggest obstacle you face. There will always be more reasons to quit than persevere, to forfeit than fight or halt rather than take another step forward.

A friend of mine climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa. He told me, “The closer we got to the top the more difficult it became. We were short of air, exhausted from the climb, but so close to the summit. During the last few yards to the top all we thought about was putting one foot in front of the other.”

And that, my friend, is what I’m suggesting you do in the presence of the obstacles that stand before you: put one foot in front of the other, take one step forward.

History celebrates those who persevere but disregards those who give up. But you’re something special. You were made to overcome, you were created to persevere; you were born to significance.

Bald Patches Often Due to Immune Attack

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: After shampooing my hair, I looked in the mirror and found a large bald patch near my ear. I screamed. I can comb my hair to hide it. Does this mean I am about to lose all my hair? Is there a treatment for it? -- A.A. ANSWER: With a fair degree of confidence, I can say you have alopecia areata, bald patches that vary in size and number. Close to 4.5 million American adults and children suffer from this condition every year. Like so many other illnesses, it's the result of an immune system gone berserk. The immune system attacks hair follicles, the skin pores that are homes for each hair. What turns on the immune system to do this is something that waits to be discovered.

As heartbreaking as alopecia areata is in the short run, there is high hope of complete restoration of hair in time. Around 50 percent will have hair regrowth within a year even if no treatment is given.

Treatments exist to speed the healing process. One is injection of a high-potency cortisone drug, like triamcinolone, into the bald patch. Another treatment consists of applying an allergen directly to the bald spots.

The reaction it produces leads to hair regrowth. The allergen often chosen is DPCP, diphenylcyclopropenone.

These are only two of the options open to alopecia areata patients.

Of his four daughters and one son, two of his daughters were colorblind. I just found out that two of his three grandsons and eight of his nine greatgrandsons are colorblind.

How common is this? -- S. ANSWER: Colorblindness affects 8 percent of men, but only 0.4 percent of women. It is, therefore, 20 times more common in men than women. It's surprising that two of your sisters have it. Less surprising is the number of grandsons and great-grandsons with it.

Most colorblind people get along in life without much trouble. And most have some degree of color perception.

A very few see the world only in grays, black and whites.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I love avocados. I'm trying to lose some weight, but I hear that avocados have a lot of fat. How can a fruit have fat? -- R.D. ANSWER: Fruits can have fat, as well as protein and carbohydrates. They have no cholesterol. No member of the plant kingdom does.

A medium avocado has around 320 calories. Most of those calories are due to the fat content of this fruit.

But the fat is good fat, not the kind of fat that prods the liver to make cholesterol. It also has three B vitamins, vitamin A and vitamin C. You can continue to eat avocados, but you have to get rid of something else in your diet that has this many calories.

Beginning in January, the Social Security cost of living allowance (COLA) is going up 1.5 percent for its 57 million beneficiaries. For those who receive an average benefit of $1272, the increase will be a whopping $19 per month.

Other changes for 2014 include: Income subject to Social Security taxation will increase to $117,000 from $113,700. Above that amount, and your contribution to Social Security does not go up.

For those who are less than full retirement age (which is age 66 for those born between 1943 and 1954) and receive Social Security benefits, the limit on earnings will be $15,480. Income above that will see deductions of benefits of $1 for every $2 earned. Those who turn age 66 in 2014 will have an earned income cap of $41,400, with $1 deducted for every $3 earned over that amount for the months until they reach full retirement age. Those who are the full retirement age for the whole year will have no benefits deducted for any income earned.

Medicare's Part B premium, however, will stay the same as in 2013, which is $104.90 (for those with incomes of less than $85,000). If you received the email saying the premium will go up to $247 per month, don't worry.

The email was a fake and has been on the Internet for three years now.

Let's look at what that $19 Social Security COLA increase will buy: One-third of a week's worth of groceries on the USDA Moderate Food Plan. You can stretch that to a half week of groceries if you stick to the Thrifty Food Plan (and eat more potatoes and less meat).
