We’ve all seen it nearly every day of our lives.

This week, Tidbits is full of “bet you didn’t know that” facts about the moon.

● The moon is 225,745 miles (363,301 km) from Earth. If you were able to plan a trip there, it would be about a two-day trip on a rocket or a 625-hour ride on a 747 jet flying at 400 mph (644 km/hr). If you could drive your car there, it would take 135 days traveling at 70 mph (112 km/hr). ● Driving around the circumference of the moon, 6,790 miles (10,864 km), is about equal to a trip from New York to London and back.

The moon is about 27% the size of Earth, with an area of 14,658,000 square miles (37,932,000 sq. km). That’s about 9.4 billion acres. ● Temperatures on the moon vary from 273 degrees F (134 C) at the hottest time of the day to -244 degrees F (-153C) at night. A day on the moon from sunrise to sunrise is about 708 hours. It rotates on its axis at a speed of about 10 mph (16 km/hr). Compare this with Earth, which rotates at about 1,000 mph (1,609 km/hr). Yet both the moon and Earth complete their orbit in about the same amount of time.

THE MOON (continued) ● The average speed at which the moon orbits the Earth is 2,287 mph (3,680 km/hr.) ● We only see about 59% of the moon’s surface from Earth. The pattern of the moon’s rotation causes the same side to face Earth at all times. What we frequently call the “dark side” of the moon (that part we can’t see) should really be referred to as the “far side.” It has only been photographed from spacecraft. The surface is covered by a mantle made up of an 825-milethick (1,330 km) layer of iron and magnesiumrich rock known as regolith. It’s been pounded by meteors, asteroids, and comets, which have created countless craters across its expanse. The widest craters are 140 miles (225 km) in diameter and are as deep as 15,000 ft. (4,500 m). There are mountains standing as high as 16,000 ft. (5,000 m). It’s estimated that the moon weighs about 81 quintillion tons (74 sextillion kg). ● Although the moon looks round to us, it’s really egg-shaped. As we look at it, the smaller end of the egg is pointed toward us. It appears to be about the same size as the sun, but it’s actually 400 times smaller. Because the moon is 400 times closer to Earth than the sun is, the two appear about the same size. Halloween Treats Aren't for Pets DEAR PAW'S CORNER: As someone who owns a lot of pets, I feel it's important to let people know that, especially around candy-rich holidays like Halloween, pets cannot eat the same foods as people. It's wellknown that chocolate is poisonous to dogs, but how many people know that dogs also shouldn't eat raisins?

And that certain herbs and flowers, like eucalyptus and lilies, are toxic to cats?

For several years I've handed out cards along with my candies reminding kids not to feed any of their Halloween loot to their pets.

This year, I'm doing something different. My local pet shelter is holding a "Halloween for pets." Owners can bring their pets to the event (being held at a nearby dog park), in costume or not, and receive pet treats and coupons for pet products and veterinary services like routine vaccinations. I'm volunteering to help at the

event and really looking forward to it.

Welcome to Goose Tips!

I love food, so Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. You get to make a big roasted turkey with all of the fixings, without all of the extra stress and pressure that comes with Christmas.

It literally is a holiday all about eating--which should be as easy a pie...right? Wrong. In some ways, because Thanksgiving is less structured and hyped than Christmas, it can actually be harder to navigate because there are fewer hard and fast rules. Are you expected to travel to see your in-laws? Do you have to alternate between spending it with your extended family and your spouse’s? Is it okay to just have a quiet turkey dinner at home with your spouse and kids? Can you skip it altogether? Who knows? I know the whole “who are we spending Thanksgiving with this year?”question is always controversial in our house-- partially because the holidays sneaks up on us and we don’t usually even start thinking about it until the first week of November, and partially because we can never remember who we spent it with the year before. Then there’s the questions of who’s going to cook, how the kids are going to stay entertained while the parents prepare the meal, and if someone is going to say something outrageous while you’re going around the table saying what you’re thankful for. Here’s a few tips to help you survive my favorite holiday.

Make it very clear early on who you are planning to spend Thanksgiving with.

Cooking should be shared, whether you’re cooking at your home or going to someone else’s house.

Try to empathize with your kids, or get an older kid to do it for you.

And don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s a holiday, ultimately, not the biggest deal in the world. Whether you’re stressing about cooking the perfect meal or having to put up with relatives you’d rather not see, remind yourself that it’s just one week-end and it’ll be over soon enough.

If your soufflé falls flat or your uncle says something offensive at the dinner table, everyone will have forgotten it by Christmas. Just go with it.

When you do decide to dine out, gather around our table at The Goose. Remember, every Friday is Family Game Night, each week we’re serving up a

THE MOON (continued) ● In May, 1961, President John F. Kennedy stated his goal in an address to Congress of “landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth” by the end of the 1960s. The first manned spacecraft to the moon was Apollo 8 in 1968, when Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders circled the moon 10 times before heading back to Earth. ● The Apollo 11 crew made history in July, 1969 when they made the first landing. On July 20, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the moon. There are very few Americans unfamiliar with his famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Armstrong later reported that what he actually said was, “that’s one small step for a man…”

The crew spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the surface, with 2 hours and 36 minutes outside the craft, walking on the surface. The footprints of the Apollo 11 crew astronauts will remain for thousands of years, considering there is no wind or adverse weather to disturb them. ● The Apollo 11 crew collected lunar rocks weighing 842 lbs. (382 kg.). ● A total of 12 men have walked on the moon. No one has done so since December, 1972 when Eugene Cernan of the final manned mission to the moon, Apollo 17, became the last man to set foot on the lunar surface. Apollo 17 was the sixth landing of humans on the moon. ● Do you know the difference between waxing and waning? During the phases of the moon’s cycle, when it appears to be getting larger, it’s called waxing, while waning is when it appears to get smaller.

● On Nov. 5, 1605, King James I of England learns of a plot to explode the Parliament building. Guy Fawkes had been found lurking in a cellar with 20 barrels of gunpowder. Fawkes revealed that he was part of a conspiracy to annihilate England's Protestant government and replace it with Catholic leadership. ● On Nov. 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln is elected the 16th president of the United States over a deeply divided Democratic Party, becoming the first Republican to win the presidency. FAMOUS WOMEN OF THE WORLD: VICTORIA WOODHULL Most folks have never heard of Victoria Woodhull, but she made the pages of history books as the first woman to run for the office of the President of the United States. VICTORIA WOODHULL (continued) ● It soon became apparent that Dr. Woodhull was an alcoholic, morphine addict, and a womanizer, and Victoria went to work to keep them afloat. After two children, including one who was mentally disabled, Victoria divorced Woodhull 11 years later. ● Victoria and Tennie were very successful as spiritual mediums and healers and made the move to New York City to capitalize on this success. Victoria married again, this time to James Blood, a former Union Army colonel in the Civil War, who had also been the first mayor of Lawrence, Kansas. The sisters’ most famous client was railroad millionaire Cornelius Vanderbilt. In appreciation for their services, in 1870 Vanderbilt helped them open their own stock brokerage house on Wall Street, and the sisters became the first women stockbrokers in history. The company was immediately successful, patronized by wealthy widows and other women of means. ● With the proceeds from the brokerage, the women established their own newspaper Woodhull and Claflin’s Weekly, a publication with 20,000 subscribers, which focused on women’s rights and labor reform. The paper was the first to print the English version of Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto. ● In 1872, nearly 50 years before women had the right to vote, Victoria became the first female candidate for U.S. President, nominated by the Equal Rights Party. The Party chose former slave and abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass as her running mate, although he never acknowledged the nomination. Victoria’s platform included an eight-hour workday, a graduated income tax, social welfare programs, and women’s rights. As a divorced woman, she advocated new divorce laws that gave women the right to leave unbearable marriages. In her words, “I have an inalienable constitutional and natural right to love whom I may, to love as long or as short a period as I can, to change that love every day if I please!” ● Just days before the Presidential election, Woodhull, her husband, and her sister were arrested on obscenity charges for running an exposé on popular Brooklyn preacher Henry Ward Beecher. Victoria spent election day in jail, and although she was acquitted of all charges, her reputation was destroyed and her businesses went bankrupt. ● Woodhull divorced her second husband in 1876, and moved to England, where she married a wealthy banker, and published a magazine called The Humanitarian for nine years. She lived out the remainder of her days in England, dying in London in 1927.

In Greek mythology, it’s a wood nymph who inhabits a tree as its spirit. The nymph only lives as long as the tree. Hamadryad is also another word for the king cobra. Did you know that a cobra bite has a mortality rate of 5060% if left untreated? A bite can be fatal in as little as 30 minutes. ● Look up and find the constellation Aries the Ram, and you’ll see Hamal, the brightest star in Aries. Hamal, along with Sheratan and Mesarthim, make up the head of the ram. One of America’s founding fathers, Hamilton graduated from what is now Columbia University, served in the Revolutionary War, was elected to the Continental Congress, practiced law, and founded the Bank of New York. He is commemorated on our currency because he was the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, and was instrumental in establishing the U.S. Mint. In 1804, after Hamilton made derogatory remarks about Vice President Aaron Burr, Burr claimed his honor had been attacked, and challenged Hamilton to a duel. Burr shot Hamilton in the lower abdomen, mortally wounding him, and Hamilton died the next day. Ironically, the dueling site, along the Hudson River at Weehawken, New Jersey, was the same site where Hamilton’s eldest son had been killed in a duel three years earlier. ● The 25 species of hamsters range in size from 13.4 inches (34 cm) long to dwarf hamsters measuring 2 inches (5.5 cm) long. The Syrian species has the shortest gestation period of any placental mammal at only 16 to 18 days, yet they’ve been known to have litters of 20 pups!

Q: Most roofing repair advice I've read says that summer is the best time to make repairs. But I didn't have time to fix some damaged shingles on my roof this year. Is it too late for rooftop repairs?

-- Bill in Hartford, Conn.

A: It's not too late. While the weather in New England at this time of year can vary between near-summertime highs to teeth-chattering lows, it's not unusual to hear the nonstop hammering of roofers finishing up repairs and replacements before the snow flies.

For shingle repairs, a few days of sunny, abovefreezing weather will ensure that the patching material cures properly. Go onto the roof to figure out how many shingles are damaged and need replacing, and buy replacements and supplies a few days ahead of the planned repair. Keep an eye on the weather, and when a clear patch is predicted, go ahead.

When replacing shingles, it's important to follow the offset layout of the undamaged shingles to provide the best protection against rain and weather.

Working carefully, slightly lift the edges of the undamaged shingles directly above the shingle you need to replace. Then work loose the damaged shingle and slide it out. Don't worry if you leave behind pieces of the old shingle under the roofing nails; you'll pry those out next.

If the building paper underneath the shingle is torn, patch it with roofing cement.

Then, begin installing the replacement. If you're replacing more than one shingle, start with the lowest one first. Nail the shingles down using either 7/8-inch or 1-inch roofing nails, placing them at the tab slots.

The final shingle -- or the only shingle, if that's the case -- shouldn't be nailed down immediately. Instead, apply a bead of roofing cement to the underside top of the shingle and slide it into place under the shingle above it. Once it's correctly set, carefully lift the shingle above it so that you can nail the replacement shingle into place. Tack down the shingle above with a bit of roofing cement if necessary.

HOME TIP: A torn shingle can be repaired temporarily by gluing the torn parts together with roofing cement.

ANSWER: Gout is an overproduction of uric acid due to the daily breakdown of cells that release DNA and RNA, the molecules of life. DNA and RNA are further degraded into uric acid. As blood levels of it rise, it diffuses into and around joints. Uric acid crystals are shaped like needles. Crystals in and near joints kick off the pain of gout. The skin over the joint turns red and becomes warm. Although the big-toe joint often is the first joint affected, the middle of the foot, the ankle and the knee also can attract uric acid crystals. don't get the job done, prednisone (a cortisone drug) nips gout in the bud quickly. When colchicine was readily available in the United States, it was a reliable antigout medicine. For the long term, once the acute attack has cooled, then drugs that rid the body of uric acid are begun. Allopurinol (Zyloprim) and probenecid are popular choices. Newer drugs like Uloric and Krystexxa are held in reserve if the standard treatments fail.

The gout diet is simple, not like it was in the days before effective medicines came on the scene. Cut back on your intake of red meat, seafood and fish. Poultry is fine.

Reduce the consumption of high-fructose corn syrup, a sweetener found in many soft drinks. Go very easy on beer. You are better off eliminating it. Distilled liquor is less likely to induce a gout attack, but it may. Wine in moderation causes little trouble.

ANSWER: Most likely, it's black hairy tongue, an elongation of the tiny papillae that stud the tongues surface. Sometimes antibiotic use brings the problem on. Most of the time, it's something that just happens.

Brush your tongue three times a day with toothpaste and a soft toothbrush. It should go away.

Here's the stuff you'll need: --a variety of leaves in different sizes and shapes --orange, yellow, red and brown poster paint --small paper plates --1-inch pieces from a household sponge --spring-type clothespins or chip clips --newspaper --fine-tip black or brown marker (optional) Here's the fun: 1. Collect fresh, flat leaves in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Arrange them on your work table the way you want them to appear in a stenciled form on your window.

2. Attach rolled pieces of masking tape to the backsides of the leaves and stick them on the window, keeping a little space between the leaves. Make sure the leaves lie flat against the pane.

3. Pour a small amount of paint onto the paper plates.

Attach a sponge piece to a clip and dab lightly into the paint. Mix colors for interesting shades, if you wish. Blot the sponge on newspaper to absorb excess paint, then lightly dab around the edges of the leaves. Change paint colors as you go, using a new piece of sponge for each color.

4. When the paint is dry, carefully remove the leaves from the window to reveal the eye-catching leaf outlines. Draw in veins with a marker, if you wish.

5. When you are ready to remove the leaf patterns from the window, wash gently with soap, water and window cleaner.

Striped Bass

Elegant enough for a dinner party, this light fish dish is fast and flavorful. Tart lemon and tangy capers create balance when paired with the tarragon-infused striped bass.

1 large lemon 1 whole (about 3 pounds) striped bass or sea bass, cleaned 3 cloves garlic, sliced 1/4 cup dry white wine 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons capers, drained 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon dried or 1 teaspoon chopped fresh tarragon leaves plus additional for garnish Ground black pepper 1. Preheat oven to 425 F. Cut lemon in half; cut 1 half into 4 slices. Set aside remaining half. Rinse fish inside and out with cold running water; pat dry with paper towels. Make 3 diagonal slashes on each side of fish, cutting almost to bone.

2. Cut 2 sheets of foil, each 8 inches longer than length of fish. Place 1 sheet of foil in 15 1/2 by 10 1/2-inch jelly-roll pan, allowing ends to extend over sides of pan. Place fish lengthwise in center of foil in pan.

Place lemon and garlic slices in fish cavity. Squeeze remaining lemon over fish.

3. In small bowl, whisk wine, olive oil, capers, Dijon, tarragon and 1/4 teaspoon pepper until blended.

Drizzle half of wine mixture into fish cavity; drizzle remaining wine mixture over fish, rubbing mixture into skin and slashes.

4. Place second sheet of foil on top of fish. Crimp edges all around to seal completely. Bake fish 25 to 30 minutes.

5. Before serving, with kitchen shears, cut opening in packet to let steam escape, then carefully pull back foil. With 2 wide spatulas, transfer fish to platter. Pour juices in foil over fish. Garnish with fresh tarragon.

Serves 4. ● Each serving: About 215 calories, 11g total fat (2g saturated), 1,117mg cholesterol, 250mg sodium, 2g total carbs, 27g protein.

● Draft dodgers, or door snakes, are easy to make and provide reasonable protection against drafts. To make one for yourself, you'll need a pair of thick tights, fabric scraps cut into inch-wide strips and a big bag of rice. Cut the tights off into two long leg portions.

Stuff them with fabric scraps and then add rice to give weight and fill in the holes. When the long "socks" are full, tie them off. Lay them out along the threshold, pushing them tight against the door, where they will block the draft!

The Department of Veterans Affairs' Office of the Inspector General are the folks who scrutinize all aspects of the VA, from care of veterans at the hospitals, to the security risks, to whether VA physicians have up-to-date licenses. Until recently, they hadn't focused their laser beam on the VA's spending on Separately Priced Items, aka SPIs, which are incidentals purchased to support VA programs and events. When it came to light that the VA spent $15.5 million on three financial-management training conferences, the OIG went to work.

Here's what it learned: Of the $15.5 million, $5.3 million was spent on goods and services purchased as SPIs from their prime vendor. They should have required the vendor to provide firm fixed prices.

The VA hadn't approved all SPI purchases in advance, nor was there adequate documentation. They'd apparently relinquished control by making the purchases through an interagency agreement with the Office of Personnel Management. The OPM did the purchasing -- on the VA's dime.

Instead of picking a new conference location when the first was found to be too small, the VA paid to have 43 additional classrooms hastily built on the site!

The OIG identified approximately $1.1 million that could have been saved via competitive contracting.

Approximately $697,000 was spent in service fees, with an additional $132,000 paid to the Office of Personnel Management in service fees, both inappropriate.

In other words, no one was keeping an eye on this money and where it went. And it's not the first time.

The OIG found three previous incidents where the VA handed over control of the money to the OPM. The problem: Too many essential components of the project were labeled as incidental. OPM netted a 2.5 percent service fee on the whole cost. Where was its incentive to lower costs?
