• While the U.S. makes up 5% of the world’s population, it has 20% of the world’s prison population, the highest rate in the world. The ratio is 639 prisoners per 100,000 people, about 0.7% of the U.S. population. Drug-related offenses account for 46% of all imprisonments.

• The state of Louisiana has the highest rate of imprisonment, 680 per 100,000 people. Angola Prison is the nation’s largest maximum security prison in the U.S, with 1,800 officers guarding about 6,300 prisoners. Known as the Alcatraz of the South, it sits on 18,000 acres that was once a slave plantation. A former Confederate major established it as a private prison in 1880, but with reports of starvation, abuse, and other harsh conditions, the State of Louisiana took it over in 1901. Conditions didn’t improve much, and in the early 1970s, an average of 12 prisoners were stabbed to death each year and it was considered one of the most violent prisons in the U.S. • Massachusetts has the lowest imprisonment rate in the nation, with just 0.81% of the population incarcerated, 133 prisoners per 100,000.

• ADMAX, a federal prison located in Florence, Colorado, houses the most dangerous criminals in need of the tightest control. The nearly 350 inmates are confined 23 hours per day, and are handcuffed and shackled when allowed out of their cells one hour a day. Notable inmates include Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols, who orchestrated the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, and Ramzi Yousef, the perpetrator of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. The Boston Marathon bomber, the Fort Hood bomber, and a former FBI agent who sold secrets to the USSR are also incarcerated there.

• The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in 1078. It was not built as a prison, but rather a royal palace and defensive fortress.

Its use as a prison began in the 12th century. Although prisoners awaited their execution in the Tower, most sentences were carried out at Tower Hill, north of the castle. Only seven people were executed there prior to World War II, including two wives of Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard. The Tower was used as a POW prison during World War II, and 12 persons convicted of espionage were executed there, the last, a German spy, in 1941. Nazi Party Deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess was the last prisoner held there. Since the late 17th century, the Crown Jewels, valued at an estimated $32 billion, have been housed at the Tower of London. It remains an official royal residence of the Queen, and contains “The Queen’s House” that she could inhabit if she so desired.

• Rikers Island, New York, is the largest jail complex in the nation with an average daily inmate population of 10,000 and room for 15,000. It’s located on an island in the East River between the boroughs of Queens and the Bronx. Prior to 1966, when a 4,200-foot bridge was built to the island from Queens, the only access to the island was by ferry.

• California’s San Quentin Prison holds the largest number of death row inmates in the U.S. It’s considered one of the most dangerous places to serve a sentence. The state’s oldest prison, it was opened in 1854 to handle the rapid increase in crime brought on by the California Gold Rush. Twenty acres of land overlooking San Francisco Bay was acquired, and convicts constructed the building designed to hold 250 inmates, a number that was quickly surpassed. Today the prison sits on 432 acres, 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, with an inmate count exceeding 3,700. Its most famous inmates are Charles Manson and wife-killer Scott Peterson.

• Charles Manson also served time at California’s Folsom Prison, the state’s second-oldest prison, which was established in 1880. It was the first to be classified as a maximum-security prison, and in 1893, became the first prison to have electricity. Folsom Prison became well-known following two concerts

by Johnny Cash. Although Cash had first recorded “Folsom Prison Blues” in 1955, it wasn’t until January 13, 1968 that he performed the concerts.

• Thirty miles north of New York City, Ossining, New York is home to Sing Sing Prison, which opened in 1828. It takes its name from the Native American tribe, from whom the land was purchased in 1685, the Sint Sinck tribe, which translates “stone upon stone.” More than 600 inmates were executed by the electric chair there before the death penalty was abolished in New York. Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed at Sing Sing in 1953 for passing along secret nuclear weapon research to the Soviet Union. ...continued

• Alcatraz Prison was first Fort Alcatraz, a fortress finished in 1858 in San Francisco Bay, 1.25 miles from the city, intended to protect the coast from enemy access. In 1861, it became a military prison to house Civil War POW’s, and remained a military prison until 1934, when it was converted to a federal prison, mainly housing bank robbers and murderers. The cold water and strong currents surrounding the island made it extremely difficult to escape, but that didn’t stop 36 men from trying. Of those, 23 were caught, 6 were shot and killed, 2 drowned, and 5 were never found, presumed drowned. One prisoner actually made it to the shore, but was so exhausted from the swim, he was unconscious and in hypothermic shock. Alcatraz was closed as a penitentiary in 1963.

• Alcatraz inmates included Al Capone, “Machine Gun” Kelly, and Robert Stroud, nicknamed “The Birdman of Alcatraz.” However, Stroud was never allowed to keep birds at that prison. The convicted murderer’s birdkeeping activities started at Leavenworth Federal Prison, where he acquired a collection of 300 canaries, beginning in 1920.

He published the book “Diseases of Canaries” in 1933, an important contribution to the field of avian diseases. But when Stroud was transferred to Alcatraz in 1942, regulations prohibited the birds.

Stroud spent 54 of his 73 years incarcerated, 42 of which were in solitary confinement.

• Attica Correctional Facility in New York opened in 1931, and has housed many notorious criminals including serial killer David “Son of Sam” Berkowitz and Mark David Chapman, who killed Beatle John Lennon. In 1971, inmates seeking better living conditions took control of the prison for five days, a riot that resulted in the deaths of 33 inmates and 10 correctional officers.

10-Foot Stack of Mail Sits Unopened at VA

Imagine a pile of mail heaped 10 feet high sitting unopened for 10 months. That's what was found in the basement of a rented Department of Veterans Affairs facility in Atlanta. When investigated, the stack was determined to contain 17,660 pieces of mail that included claims, correspondence from veterans, 10,020 medical records and $207,000 in checks, some of which had already expired.

The problems began when a health care arm of the VA wanted to commandeer the basement space being used by a VA payments group. They came to a verbal agreement that the new group would take over dealing with the mail if the payment group left. A handshake later, it was done. Except nobody asked the new group if they even knew how to process correspondence, records and checks. And, apparently, nobody did.

So, although the new people took a stab at dealing with the mail, for the most part the pile sat and grew as more mail came in. And sat and grew some more. The new group asked the old group for help.

The old group said no. Enterprising souls in the new group sent off some of the mail to other facilities -14 boxes to one facility alone -- which sent it right back. They tried again, sending another 13 boxes.

What happens when payment requests are ignored? Veterans can't go to that outside provider and treatment is delayed or denied. Appeals can be denied if not received in time. Veterans with bad test results may not be notified.

Within a short period of time after the report came out, the VA acted and got the backlog cleared up.

The worrisome part of this is that with a coming consolidation of 82 claims processing groups at the VA, this can happen again if steps aren't taken to ensure that mail is handled correctly.

• Just for an idea of how far Saturn is from Earth, if you traveled there in your car at 70 miles per hour, it would take you 1,292 years to reach Saturn when it is closest to Earth, and 1,595 years when it’s at its farthest.

• Galileo first observed Saturn, looking through a telescope, in 1610. He incorrectly believed he was seeing three planets, or perhaps a planet with two moons on the side. He was actually seeing Saturn’s rings, composed mostly of ice particles, along with a smaller amount of rocks and dust. However, Saturn was known by the ancients, because it is a “naked eye” planet, meaning it can be seen without a telescope or binoculars.

• You might be able to “stand your ground” on Earth, but not so on Saturn! It’s made up almost entirely of gases, mostly hydrogen and helium.

• Saturn isn’t the only planet with rings. They’re just the only ones you can see from Earth. Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune have rings, just much fainter. The spread of Saturn’s seven main rings could reach from Earth almost to the moon, more than 175,000 miles, yet they are very thin, less than 0.6 miles thick.

• It’s really cold on Saturn! Scientists estimate the surface temperature of the planet is about -350 degrees F. Compare that to the coldest temperature ever recorded on Earth, -129 degrees F, recorded in Antarctica in 1983. Planet Earth receives about 90 times more sunlight than Saturn does.

• It’s also very windy on Saturn. Wind speeds at the planet’s equator are about 1,118 miles per hour. Contrast this with Earth’s strongest tornadoes, which have reached speeds of 300 miles per hour.

• Saturn spins on its axis very fast, making a day on the planet about 10 ½ hours. But it orbits the Sun very slowly. While it takes Earth 365 days to make its way around the Sun, a year on Saturn tops 10,759 days, more than 29 Earth years.

• In 1973, the robotic spacecraft Pioneer 11 blasted off from Cape Canaveral, the first spacecraft to fly

by Saturn. It took the Pioneer 11 until 1979 to arrive at its destination, 13,000 miles from the planet, on a path through Saturn's outer rings. At the point of its closest approach, the craft was moving at about 71,000 miles per hour. It took 440 images of the planet and its surrounding system. The NASA Research Center had its last contact with Pioneer 11 in 1995, 22 years after its launch. Two of the original 11 scientific instruments aboard were still operational.

• Voyager 1 was launched by NASA in 1977. The space probe still transmits data to Earth more than 44 years after its launch. It’s the most distant human-made object in space from Earth.

• Saturn, nicknamed “The Jewel of the Solar System,” has a diameter of 74,898 miles, nearly 10 times larger than Earth. About 750 Earths could fit inside the planet Saturn. • On June 13, 1381, a large mob of English peasants marches into London and begins burning and looting the city. The revolt began with the bubonic plague in the late 1340s, which killed nearly a third of the population of England and led to higher wages due to scarcity of labor.

"Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body." So says a proverb from the Bible. This week, Tidbits examines the sweetness and medicinal attributes of honey.

• The ancient Romans used honey for cooking, for dressing wounds to prevent infection, and as currency for paying taxes. The 11th-century German aristocracy required peasants to make payments in honey, mainly because it was the ideal ingredient for a sweetener in the brewing of beer. Ancient pottery dating back to the Stone Age has been found with remnants of beeswax clinging to the earthenware. A 15,000-year-old Spanish cave painting features a human removing honey from a hive.

• Honey never spoils! That’s due to its very low moisture level and its natural acidity, making it very difficult for bacteria to grow. A 2,000-yearold jar of honey was found by archaeologists excavating Egyptian King Tut’s tomb, still good and ready to eat. Because bacteria don’t grow in honey, since ancient times, it’s been used as a natural bandage to prevent infection in cuts and burns.

• Bees might be busy, but no matter how hard they work, the average honey bee will only produce 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey over the course of its lifetime. That 1-lb. jar of honey you pick up at the grocery store requires the effort of 800 bees, who gather the nectar of two million flowers. The bees will fly more than 55,000 miles to accomplish this feat.

• Although there are upwards of 20,000 different species of bees on Earth, just a tiny fraction of them make honey. Commercial beekeepers collect honey from only seven known honey bee species.

The average bee colony contains between 30,000 and 60,000 bees.

• The flavor of honey depends on the source of the nectar the bees have gathered. There are about 320 different varieties of honey, including wildflower, clover, buckwheat, orange blossom, alfalfa, goldenrod, lavender, and eucalyptus. Light-colored honey has a mild flavor, while dark honey is bold-tasting.

• Darker honeys have more antioxidants than their light-colored counterpartd. One study indicated that individuals who drank water mixed with dark buckwheat honey experienced a 7% boost in their antioxidant levels. Honey has about the same levels of antioxidants contained in apples, spinach, strawberries, and oranges.

An antioxidant called pinocembrin, found in honey, has been shown to improve brain function. Honey’s anti-inflammatory properties make it a good choice for soothing sore throats and treating coughs. When parasites invade the human body, causing illness, honey can be part of the cure. A mixture of equal parts of honey, vinegar, and water consumed for several days can cleanse the body of parasites.

• Honey can be very beneficial to health, but it is never to be given to infants under the age of one year. Although it’s rare, consumption of honey by babies can bring about a serious gastrointestinal condition known as infant botulism. It’s the result of spores found in honey producing a dangerous toxin, which can lead to respiratory failure.
