WHAT ABOUT BOB?

by Kathy Wolfe Bob who? That’s what Tidbits will tell you this week, as we look at people, places, and things containing those three letters.

• Boblo Island in Ontario, Canada is the site of an old abandoned amusement park that has been left to deteriorate. The park, near the mouth of the Detroit River, opened in 1898, attracting thousands to rides that included the Wild Mouse, the Nightmare, and the Screamer, along with a carousel and a zoo. Accessible only by steam-powered steamboats and ferries, which could hold 2,500 visitors at a time, it was known as the “Coney Island of Michigan,” due to its proximity to Detroit. Automobile magnate Henry Ford financed the dance hall there, at the time the second-largest in the world, where 5,000 dancers could dance to an enormous 16-ft-tall automated selfplaying orchestra machine containing 419 pipes. Detroit’s declining economy and gang violence contributed to the demise of the park, and in 1993, after 95 years of operation, Boblo Island closed its doors.

In 2012, the restored orchestra machine sold at auction for nearly $1.1 million.

The carousel of 44 horses, two goats and two deer sold for more than $1 million.

Some of the decayed ruins of the park remain, but the island continues to be developed for luxury homes and condos.

• We’ve all sung “Jingle Bells” since we were kids, specifically the phrase “bells on bobtail ring, making spirits bright.”

Have you ever wondered what “bobtail” means? It refers to the tail of a horse that has had the hair cut short to keep it from getting caught in the sleigh’s reins and from waving in the driver’s face. In the days of sleigh transportation, the bells served as a type of alarm system to alert others when high snow banks obstructed the view of drivers.

• In the over-the-road trucking world, “bobtail” means something completely different. A bobtail semi carries no cargo and does not have a trailer attached. “Bobtailing” isn’t the same as “deadheading,” which means the driving is pulling an empty trailer with no freight.

• From the reign of England’s Henry VII until 1971, the shilling was a unit of currency in the United Kingdom.

It was equivalent of one-twentieth of a British pound, or twelve pence, and was frequently referred to as a “bob.”

In February, 1971, a new range of coins was introduced under the decimal currency system, and the shilling was replaced with a five-pence piece, which was identical in size, weight, and value of the shilling. Twenty years later, the five-pence coin was reduced in size and shillings were no longer considered to be legal tender.

• The first known use of the term bobbysoxer was in 1943, an expression that referred to an adolescent girl, or “teenybopper.” It stemmed from the fashion fad of bobby socks, those that reached above the ankle, and were sometimes folded down to the ankle.

The socks were typically worn with loafers or saddle shoes. A teenaged Shirley Temple further popularized the trend by wearing bobby socks in the 1947 film “The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer.

BUFFALO CHICKEN PIZZA Yield: 12 slices Time: 1 hour What You'll Need: 16 ounces pizza dough, purchased or homemade 2 tablespoons butter 3/4 cup buffalo hot sauce (like Frank's Red Hot) 2–3 cups diced, cooked chicken 1½ cups cottage cheese 3/4 cup ranch dressing 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1 tablespoon olive oil 1/2 small purple onion, cut in rounds 1/3 cup blue cheese - crumbled 1/4 cup celery with leaves, chopped 1/4 cup green onion, sliced 1/4 cup avocado, diced

Here's How: Preheat oven to 425 F. Allow the pizza dough to come to room temperature. Melt butter and place in a medium bowl, add hot sauce and stir.

Set about 2 tablespoons aside to drizzle over the pizza when it's cooked.

Toss the chicken in the sauce, set aside. (You can sneak a bite, I won't tell.)

In a food processor or blender, puree

the cottage cheese with the ranch dressing, salt and 1/2 cup of the mozzarella until smooth. Get a spoon and taste this! It's so yummy.

Brush a 10-inch-by-15-inch sheet pan with olive oil to help brown the bottom crust. Stretch the pizza dough to fit the pan. It doesn't need to be perfect, but try to get it uniformly thin, so it'll bake evenly.

Spread the cottage cheese mixture evenly over the dough leaving a 1-inch border around the edges. Distribute the chicken, making sure each slice gets an equal amount. Add the onion rounds artistically, and sprinkle with the rest of the mozzarella. Finally, dot the whole thing with blue cheese crumbles.

Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the crust is golden brown. Let the pizza cool for a few minutes then sprinkle the top with the green onion, celery and avocado. Summon your inner Jackson Pollack and drizzle with reserved hot sauce. Slice, serve and take a bow!

This recipe can be adjusted to suit your taste. Don't like blue cheese?

Skip it! Love hot sauce? Use more.

Vegetarian? Swap cubed tofu for the chicken.

NFL playoffs have got me in a tailgate kind of mood. This week, as I was making my menu, I was anticipating the scrumptious foods of Super Bowl Sunday, but I couldn't decide between buffalo chicken wings or pizza. They both sound delicious.

I decided to mash them together and make a Buffalo Chicken Pizza.

It's got all the flavors and textures of buffalo chicken wings, but on a warm crusty pizza. What's not to love?

The base for this gridiron gem is a rich and creamy, ranch-infused white sauce. That's topped with buffalo chicken that's spicy and hot. And then the cheese — there has to be lots of gooey mozzarella and piquant blue cheeses. After the pizza bakes, we sprinkle it with green onion and diced celery for crunch. Then we finish with diced avocado that's creamy, refreshing and cool. This is ridiculously good!

I'm all about finding frugal substitutions for expensive ingredients, hence the cottage cheese in this recipe.

Cottage cheese makes a great low-cost substitute for ricotta cheese. Once its pureed, it's creamy and fluffy with a texture very much like ricotta. I promise no one will suspect you're sneaking cottage cheese into the recipe. Side note: This cottage cheese and ranch mixture makes a wonderful dip for veggies and chips, so you might want to make extra.

• The bob haircut came on the fashion scene in 1909, when Polish hairdresser Atoini Cierplikowski, the world’s first celebrity hairdresser, introduced the style in Paris. The cut was modeled after 15th-century French heroine Joan of Arc. Joan wore a short bob out of necessity, to conceal her gender during the 100-year war between France and England. It was more than just a hairstyle in the 1920s, as the bob became a symbol of feminine independence, with young women nicknamed “flappers” sporting the new style. When famous female personalities like Coco Chanel and actresses Sarah Bernhardt and Greta Garbo bobbed their hair, daring young women abandoned their long confining dresses and long heavy hair as a statement of their freedoms – the right to vote, obtaining jobs, playing organized sports, and finally leaving the house unchaperoned.

• Those in the United Kingdom call them kirby grips, but in North America, they’re known as bobby pins! These metal or plastic hairpins first became popular in the 1920s to hold the new bobbed hairstyles in place. A San Francisco cosmetics manufacturer, Luis Marcus, is reported to have invented the little double-pronged pin shortly after World War I, selling a pair of his handmade pins for 35 cents.

• Famed novelist F. Scott Fitzgerald published his short story “Bernice Bobs Her Hair” in 1920 in the “Saturday Evening Post,” the story of a mousey Wisconsin girl who visits her snobby society girl cousin. Cousin Marjorie insincerely promises to help Bernice learn to thrive in social situations, advising her to bob her hair, although Marjorie herself has long hair. When the cousins’ relationship goes awry, before heading back to her home town, Bernice sneaks into her cousin’s room at night and cuts off Marjorie’s long thick braids as she sleeps.

• Before the days of electricity, chandeliers featured a glass collar to catch the drippings of light fixtures’ candles. This collar was known as a bobeche, and can still be seen as an accent on modern fixtures, sometimes with dangling glass prisms.

• The pioneer of reggae music, Bob Marley, was born in Jamaica in 1945. He got his musical start in 1963, forming Bob Marley and the Wailers. Oddly enough, an old soccer injury led to his death. A cancerous growth on his big toe from the sports injury metastasized, spreading to his brain, liver, and lungs, taking his life in 1981 at just 36 years of age. His greatest hits album “Legend,” released three years after his death, became the best-selling reggae album of all time. “Rolling Stone” ranks Marley as No. 11 on its list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.

• The 1993 movie “Cool Runnings” told the story of the Jamaican four-man bobsled team that made it to the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Alberta.

John Candy starred as the team’s coach.

At the Games, spectators marveled at the peculiar likelihood of a tropical country competing in a cold-weather sport.

Unfortunately, the team lost control of their sled and crashed during one of their four runs (the actual footage of the crash is seen in the film), but the team members got out of their sled and walked it to the finish line. The Jamaican bobsled team returned to the Olympics in 1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2014. Surprisingly, in 1994, they finished 14th, ahead of the United States, Russia, France, and Italy.

WOMEN IN SPACE

Worldwide, 70 women have been on a space mission. This week, Tidbits spotlights a few of the ground-breakers.

• Valentina Tereshkova was just 26 years old when she became the first woman to fly in space. Her solo mission on the Vostok 6 blasted off in June, 1963, orbiting the Earth 48 times over two days, 23 hours, and 12 minutes.

Before joining the Russian Air Force, Tereshkova was a textile factory worker and an amateur skydiver. Five months after her historic flight, she married a fellow cosmonaut, Andriyan Nikolayev, the pilot of 1962’s Vostok 3 mission. The pair wed at the Moscow Wedding Palace, with Communist Party leader Nikita Khrushchev presiding. The cosmonauts’ daughter Elena became the first person with a mother and father who had both traveled into space. Valentina remains the only woman to have flown a solo space mission.

• It was 19 years before another woman was sent to space, another Soviet, Svetlana Savitskaya, who traveled on the Soyuz T-7 with two other cosmonauts in 1982. After being rejected from flying school at age 16 due to her age, she took up parachuting, and by the time she was 17, she had already completed 450 jumps. Two years after her Soyuz T-7 journey, Savitskaya was launched again, this time aboard Soyuz T-12, becoming the first woman to fly to space twice. This mission provided her the honor of being the first woman to perform a spacewalk.

• The first American woman in space was Sally Ride, a crew member aboard the second mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983. This six-day mission deployed two communications satellites and conducted extensive research and experiments. Ride was on another Challenger mission in 1984.

• Sally Ride was not only the first American woman in space, she also had the honor of being the youngest astronaut to travel into space, accomplished at 32, a distinction she held until 2021. Ride spent more than 343 hours in space.

• In 1984, President Ronald Reagan introduced the Teacher in Space Project, NASA’s proposal to send an “ordinary person” into space. New Hampshire social studies teacher Christa McAuliffe beat out more than 11,000 applicants for the chance to conduct experiments and teach two lessons from the Space Shuttle Challenger. On January 28, 1986, just one minute and 13 seconds after launch, the craft exploded, killing Christa and six other crew members.

• Barbara Morgan was Christa McAuliffe’s backup, training side-by-side with her fellow teacher. Following the Challenger disaster, Morgan returned to her Idaho teaching position. But 12 years later, she began training to become a full-time astronaut. In August of 2007, Morgan served as a robotic arm operator aboard STS-118, a mission to the International Space Station. In 2008, she went back to her teaching job once again.

• Judith Resnik planned to become a professional concert pianist, but after achieving a perfect score on her SAT exam, she entered the engineering program at Carnegie Mellon University at age 17. Judith was the second American woman in space, flying aboard the maiden voyage of the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1984. She was one of the crew members of the Challenger who tragically died in the 1986 explosion.

• Twelve humans have walked on the Moon, all men. But since Sally Ride’s voyage, more than 50 American women have flown into space, most on Space Shuttle flights. China began crewed space missions in 2003, and two Chinese women have been in space.

SLED DOGS

In observance of National Sled Dog Day on February 2, Tidbits is hauling in the facts on these remarkable animals.

• There is evidence of dogs pulling sleighs in Siberia dating back 9,000 years. The practice gradually made its way across the frozen North, reaching the Inuit and Athabascan people of North America, where dogs were used in hunting and fishing communities as part of their daily life.

• The Klondike Gold Rush of the 1890s spurred on the practice of using sled dogs to haul supplies, with 20,000 to 30,000 prospectors heading north to find their fortune. During the winter months, most gold camps were accessible only by sled.

During this time, a system of delivering the mail was also established, using a team of eight to ten Alaskan Malamutes.

• Sled dog teams most often consist of Siberian Huskies and Alaskan Malamutes. They have a double-layer coat, with a coarse outer fur and a softer inner layer. They can range in weight from 35 lbs. (16 kb) up to around 71 lbs. (32 kg), with most dogs around 55 lbs. (25 kg). A domestic dog of the same size requires about 1,700 calories a day, but a sled dog has no trouble consuming 10,000 calories.

• Huskies and Malamutes are very intelligent, easily-trained animals, and are ready to run beside harnessed teams by 6 to 8 months of age. Their first hitch to a sled will be next to an experienced dog.

By the time the pups are ready for a race, it’s not unusual for them to have already covered up to 3,000 miles (4,828 km) in their training.

Mexican Chicken Bake ---

Sunny Mexico -- where the warm blue sky is never ending and the “spiciness” of the food can be as “hot” or as “mild” as you want it to be. For us wimps who love the bold flavors but say “Hold the jalapenos,” reach for the mild salsa.

1/2 cup salsa (mild, medium, hot or extra-hot) 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce Sugar substitute to equal 1 tablespoon, suitable for baking 3/4 cup shredded reduced-fat Cheddar cheese 1 cup coarsely crushed baked nacho chips 1 1/2 cups diced cooked chicken breast 1 (15-ounce) can cut green beans, rinsed and drained

1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Spray an 8-by-8-inch baking dish with butter-flavored cooking spray.

2. In a medium saucepan, combine salsa, tomato sauce and sugar substitute. Stir in Cheddar cheese. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes or until cheese melts, stirring often.

3. Evenly arrange half of chips in prepared baking dish. Layer chicken and green beans over chips. Pour hot salsa mixture evenly over beans. Evenly sprinkle remaining chips over top.

4. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove from oven and place baking dish on a wire rack and let set for 5 minutes. HOLLYWOOD -- “Joker” Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix has a Napoleon complex in his future -- or at least it would help, since he’ll take on the emperor of France in “Kitbag,” reuniting him with “Gladiator” director Ridley Scott. His co-star is “Pieces of a Woman” Oscar nominee Vanessa Kirby.

Kirby stars in “The Son” with Anthony Hopkins, Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern and also will star opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in the thriller “Suddenly.”

Also taking on a famous persona is “Captain America” Chris Evans, who’ll portray MGM superstar Gene Kelly in an untitled film about a 12-year-old boy who works at MGM in Photo Credit: 1952 and creates an imaginary friendship Warner Bros. with Kelly. • The team is headed up by a lead dog, not necessarily the fastest dog, but certainly the most perceptive to the musher’s signals. Directly behind the lead dog are two “swing dogs,” those that help navigate turns and curves. Following the swing dogs are the “team dogs,” providing power to the team. At the very back of the pack are the “wheel dogs,” the largest and strongest of the group, who guide the sled around corners or trees.

• Mushers will shout “Gee” when commanding for a right turn, and “Haw” for a left turn.

• Many people are familiar with the story of Balto, the black-and-white Siberian Husky credited with saving the town of Nome, Alaska from a deadly outbreak of diphtheria in 1925. The required serum for the infectious disease was dispatched by rail to the last train station on the route, 674 miles (1,085 km) from Nome. Musher Gunnar Kassen and his lead dog Balto were the final leg of a 20-team relay that transported the serum, navigating through wind, snow, and ice in temperatures of -50 F. Kassen and his team arrived in the early hours of February 2, narrowly warding off the outbreak. A statue of Balto erected in 1925 can be found in New York City’s Central Park. The 1,100–mile (1,800km) annual Iditarod race is held to commemorate the serum’s delivery.

• Although not an official Olympic event, the 1932, 1952, and 1994 Winter Olympics all featured a demonstration sled dog race. The 1932 Lake Placid completion was a course of 25 miles (40 km), with the sleds reaching speeds of up to 18.5 mph (30 km/hr).

Clean the dryer vent screen monthly with a gentle soap and water bath. Rinse well and dry thoroughly before inserting back into your dryer.
