Our school is continuing our work from last year, focusing on academic and social emotional growth. We are committed to providing high-level standards-based instruction, coupled with engaging, authentic, and rigorous learning. We believe that as we operate from our “Culture of Care” framework, we can create a learning environment where all students will learn.

The Oregon Department of Education is partnering with school districts and local communities to ensure a 90% ontime, four year graduation rate by 2025. To progress toward this goal, the state will prioritize efforts to improve attendance, provide a well-rounded education, invest in implementing culturally responsive practices, and promote continuous improvement to close opportunity and achievement gaps for historically and currently underserved students.

Newberg schools strive to ensure all students and their parents feel welcome to our school by including bilingual staff in our school office. We provide multiple means of parent communication both through the classroom and the main office to help ensure all families are kept updated on school events. Student safety is our biggest priority which is why we have a closed campus when students are present, requiring all visitors to sign in through the front office. Additionally, all visitors are required to sign in through our Raptor system and wear identification while on school grounds.

Our school has outlined a clear bullying, harassment, and safety policies to ensure our students have an environment conducive to learning. We encourage all reports of bullying to be brought to the attention of school staff immediately. Our school is also participating in the SAFE Oregon program, which allows anonymous bullying tips to be reported through the SAFE Oregon network. In addition to bullying prevention, our school safety plan utilizes the Standard Response Protocol system to ensure that all staff and students are trained on school safety policies and procedures.

Our school strives to make everyone welcome as they enter the building. We have hired more staff that speak Spanish and our bilingual secretary continues to welcome our Hispanic community into our school. Important information is sent home in both English and Spanish.

When we sent out emails or one call reminders, they too are translated so they are sent in both English and Spanish. We have interpreters available for conferences in both the fall and the spring.

To ensure a safe and secure environment for our students and staff, our school district has implemented consistent safety protocols.

Newberg High School strives to meet the academic and social/emotional needs of all students by focusing on a guaranteed and viable curriculum, Professional Learning Community work, equitable access to programs, community partnerships, and family outreach. We place a heavy emphasis on attendance and have developed a series of interventions to re-engage students who are chronically absent. We’ve developed strong community partnerships with Newberg Providence and Yamhill County for student mental health support. We have collaborated with and received community support from local businesses to enhance our Career & Technical Education programs.

Ensuring that students feel safe and welcome at Newberg High School is paramount to our community. Our focus on a Culture of Care takes many forms and includes recognizing and rewarding students for academic and extracurricular achievements, training staff on early indicators of mental health concerns for students, and developing strategies as a staff to ensure that students have positive interactions with adults and strong connections with teachers in the classroom.
