Rise up, people of peace! Begin with what you have—…the mind of Christ.” Citing as his central text Acts 2:1-4, the Rev. he Salt Spring Peace and Justice Centre, aimed at providing space for conflict resolution, training projects for human development and empowerment towards wholeness, was officially launched on February 21 at the Salt Spring Baptist Church Hall by the Jamaica Baptist Union. This event was part of the JBU Convention and 163rd Annual General Assembly held February 20-24, 2013.

The president of the Jamaica Baptist Union, the Rev. Luke Shaw (r), presents a cheque valued at $150,000.00 to Miss Glorine Perry, Secretary of Salt Spring Baptist Church in St. James, for assistance in the operations of the JBU Peace and Justice Centre, launched at the church recently. The cheque represents the first installment from the JBU.

General Secretary of the JBU, the Rev. Karl Johnson, in addressing participants at the launch said that with St. James and Montego Bay battling its growing reputation as the hub of organized crime in the face of the lottery scam, multiple killings and other serious criminal offences, the Centre will play a practical role in the promotion of peace and justice and diffusing community tension.

“This is a centre which is geared to the enabling and uplifting of the at-risk persons in our society, moving them to a place of wholeness and a place of being all that God would have them to be … We at the Jamaica Baptist Union are not just opening an infrastructure, we are actually preparing space for activity and ministry, and that for us is important as we would like for this that we are doing to be seen through the lenses of ordinary persons in ordinary places, opening themselves to God to do extraordinary things,” the Rev. Mr. Johnson pointed out. (cont’d on page 15)
