1.5 miles, mixed surface including compacted crushed surface and concrete – Easily accessible from downtown, this promenade circles the reflecting lake for the State Capitol building. A favorite lunchtime stroll. Location: Downtown Olympia, bordered by Deschutes Parkway, Fifth Ave. and Water St.

Compacted crushed surface – 2,000 foot switchback trail links the Capitol Campus to Heritage Park. Location: South end of Heritage Park, on Capitol Lake.
.33 miles, unpaved – This innovative, award-winning design combines bioengineering, stormwater treatment and public art. The site feels more like a place of natural discovery than a hardworking clean water facility. Location: Corner of Frederick St. and Wheeler Ave. SE.

.7 miles, paved and unpaved segments – Loops through multipurpose park. Location: 3333 Morse-Merryman Rd. SE.
Madison Scenic Park
.13 miles, unpaved – Dramatic vistas of downtown, the Capitol buildings and the Capitol Campus from this neighborhood park. Location: 10th Ave. SE, just east of Central St.
Percival Landing Boardwalk
.9 miles, boardwalk – Scenic stroll along Budd Bay offers public art, historic interpretive sites and waterfront views of the Olympic Mountains. Restaurants, shops, playground and restroom facilities border the path. Viewing tower at north end within Port Plaza by the Farmers Market. Location: Boardwalk extends north from the 4th Ave. Bridge along the water.
Stevens Field
.4 miles, unpaved – Nature trail in conjunction with sports fields and Lincoln Elementary School. Location: 300 24th Ave. SE, off of South Capitol Way.
Sunrise Park
.22 miles, paved, .14 miles, unpaved – Short loop trail within neighborhood park. Hillside path to view of Mt. Rainer and sunrise. Location: Bing St. NW, off of Bush Ave.
Tumwater Falls Park
.5 miles, compacted crushed gravel – Trail follows the lower 1/4 mile of the Deschutes River before it enters Capitol Lake, formerly Budd Inlet. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife maintains fish ladders and hatchery facilities on site. Waterfall and grotto views. For more information, call the Olympia Tumwater Foundation, 360/943-2550. Location: C St. and Deschutes Way in Tumwater. Trail starts behind Falls Terrace Restaurant.
Tumwater Historic Park
.5 miles, mixed surfacing – Trail borders the Deschutes River, providing access to the river and bird watching. Park trails connect with the pathway system around Capitol Lake. Location: Simmons Rd. SE, off of Deschutes Pkw.
Wonderwood Park
.25 miles, paved – An easy walk through the woods of a community park, located in the Lacey suburbs. Location: Two entrances-31st Avenue off of College St. and Brentwood Dr. off of Ruddell Rd.
Yauger Park
.9 miles, unpaved – Quick nature getaway on Olympia’s west side, trail enters woods for part of its length then loops past ball fields, skate court and picnic sites. Location: 3100 Capitol Mall Dr. SW.
Burfoot Park
3.8 miles, unpaved – Trail leads through second growth conifer forest to a 1,000 foot long pebble beach on Puget Sound. Popular for sunsets. 1/4 mile long Horizon Trail is ADA and a Braille trail. Location: 6 miles north of Olympia on Boston Harbor Rd.
Frye Cove
3 miles, unpaved – Great views of Mt. Rainier and Eld Inlet reward the hiker at this beachfront park. Location: Take Highway 101 to Steamboat Island Rd. Go approximately 6 miles to the park.
Garfield Nature Trail
.33 miles, unpaved, steps – Forested ravine trail in NW Olympia crosses several bridges over a seasonal creek. Location: Trail access from Rogers St. between Conger and Madison, or on West Bay Dr.
Kenneydell Park
1 mile of trail, paved and unpaved Regional park offers forested trails, swimming and recreation amenities on Black Lake. Location: 6745 Fair view Rd. SW.
Lake Lois Park Habitat
Preserve
.4 miles, unpaved – Trail leads through a unique natural wetland/ wildlife system in the heart of Lacey’s urban area. Location: East on Martin Way to Carpenter Rd., turn right.
.5 miles paved, 2.0 + miles unpaved – Trails lead through this geological wonder of gently sloping mounds up to 30 feet across and 7 feet tall. An interpretive shelter explains theories of mound formation, and trail brochures guide a natural history walk. Educational groups and research requests, please contact DNR Central Region 360-748-2383. Location: I-5 south to exit 95, travel west on Route #121 to Littlerock, continue west .5 mile on 128th, at T turn right on Waddell Creek Rd., travel .9 miles to preserve entrance on left.
1 mile and 5.5 miles, mixed surfacing including boardwalk
Two loops of 1.1 miles and .6 miles, mixed surface with boardwalk Nature trails provide viewing of ducks, wrens, otters, beaver and the life cycle of salmon. Another trail of .75 miles, accessed via the upper parking area, leads through a demonstration forest. Large groups should call ahead at 360/748-2383. Location: 6 miles south of Hwy. 101 on Delphi Rd.
Segments
Millersylvania State Park
Unpaved trail system – Miles of trails wind through the park, including 6.6 miles good for children and a one mile exercise trail. Location: Millersylvania is 10 miles south of Olympia, off I-5, exit 95, at 1245 Tilley Rd. S.
Well marked and easy trail system provides opportunity to see eagles, waterfowl and other birds. The 1 mile Nisqually River Trail is ADA accessible and runs through a wooded plain with views to the scenic river. The 5.5 mile Brown Farm Dike Trail offers the longest stroll and portions are generally closed to the public from mid-October - January. The visitor center is open Wednesday-Sunday, 9am-4pm. Entrance fee. For more information, including organized walks and programs, call the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, at 360/753-9467. Location: I-5 North to the Nisqually Exit (#114). Follow the signs.
.5 miles unimproved trail and 1.2 miles of mixed surfacing
Unimproved trails offer access to the Deschutes River and beach areas, while other trail leads through the park. Location: 5800 Henderson Blvd. south of Yelm Hwy.
2.4 miles, mixed surfacing including boardwalks and steps – Site of ancient Squaxin Island family villages, now characterized by towering trees and nesting osprey. Tidal shoreline trail crosses watersheds before ending on the shore of South Puget Sound. Gravel beach and mud flats at low tide. Opportunities to see waterfowl and water views. East side of the park has shorter nature trails. Location: 2600 East Bay Dr. NE.
Three loops of 1.25 miles, .75 miles, and .25 miles, unpaved Take your pick of forest or water views. Low tide cobble and shell beach. Open Wednesday-Sunday only. Location: From I-5 North, take the Marvin Rd. exit, go over the freeway and take a right on Hogum Bay Rd. Follow the signs. For more information, call 360/456-6464.
.75 miles, unpaved – Trail leads through a wooded, hilly area in an undeveloped park. Location: 3115 Ridgeview Ct. SW.
1.5 miles, mixed surfacing including boardwalks and steps – Loop trail winds through over 153 acres of temperate rain forest crossing numerous springs and Moxlie Creek. Home to owls, deer and salmon. Opportunities for forest solitude. Location: Trailhead parking lot on Henderson Blvd. south of I-5. Pedestrian entrances on Eastside St. and 22nd Ave.
Conservation Area, Overlook Trail
0.5 miles, compacted crushed rock – Short trail continues on the old Chehalis Western Railroad grade into natural area to Woodard Bay viewpoint. Location: Parking at DNR trailhead parking lot on Woodard Bay Rd. just north of Lemon Rd.
.75 mile, paved and 1 mile, unpaved – Wildlife viewing is abundant along the mature forest and shoreline. Shorter trail leads to the shore and provides opportunities to see great blue herons and seals. Longer trail includes steps and elevated boardwalks, and traverses through a maturing forest. Education groups and research requests please contact DNR Central Region, 360/748-2383. Location: Parking off Woodard Bay Rd. just west of the bridge over Woodard Bay.
2.75 miles, paved – The 10 foot wide path parallels the Interstate5 corridor between Martin Way in Lacey and both Henderson Blvd, and 14th Ave. near the State Capitol Campus in Olympia with on and off ramps at major streets. The path essentially serves as the northern most terminus to the Chehalis-Western trail corridor.

5.2 miles, paved – Originally part of the Chehalis Western Railroad, this popular trail now links Woodard Bay with Martin Way. Fun trail for bicycling, skating and long walks through woods, past ponds and with views to Mt. Rainier. Separate gravel trail for horses. Parking for horse trailers, horse manure receptacle and horse mounting station. Connections to the segment of the Chehalis-Western Trail owned and maintained by Thurston County, south of Pacific Ave. (see following listing), can be made using sidewalks or bike lanes on Lilly Rd. or SleaterKinney and Pacific Ave. Future plans call for a connecting bridge across I-5. Location: Parking off Woodard Bay Rd. just north of Lemon Rd. Trail access is also available along 4000 block of Martin Way near the bus stop and at cross streets including 26th Ave. and South Bay Rd.
Approximately 160 miles of unpaved multiple use unpaved trails, separated into two systems – North end of forest is motorized (not 4x4) from April 1-October 31, mt. bikes and hikers allowed all year. South trails are open for horse use April 1-October 31 and are open to mt. bikes and hikers year round. There are several short 1 mile segments for hikers only. Location: Major access points for Motorized Trail System are : Middle Waddell Trailhead (Waddell Creek County Rd.), Rock Candy Trailhead (off Hwy. 8) and Porter Creek Campground (off Hwy. 12 and Forest Rd) Major access point of non-motorized system are: Margaret McKenny (off Waddell Creek County Rd.), Mima Trailhead (Marksman County Rd.) and Porter Creek Campground (off Hwy. 12 and Forest Rd.). Other access points are in the interior of the forest off unpaved forest roads.
(April 1 - October 31)
Approximately 14 miles, paved – For those seeking longer paved trails for biking, skating, running and other recreation. Paved trail is open to pedestrians, bicycles, wheelchairs and other nonmotorized recreational use. Includes views to Chambers Lake, Mt. Rainier, woodlands and other features. Plans are to connect this trail to the Yelm to Tenino Trail. Location: Trailhead parking is at the Chambers Lake Boat Launch east of intersection of Elizabeth and Fones Rds. Trail may also be accessed from other road crossings including the Yelm Hwy. east of Indian Summer Golf Course.
1.5 miles, compacted crushed rock – Gravel trail follows abandoned railway corridor between Eastside St. and Dayton Ave. Will connect with Chehalis-Western Trail in the future. Partners include the Washington Department of Transportation and the Woodland Trail Greenway Association. Location: Trail access from Eastside St., Frederick St. and Dayton Ave.
