I am delighted to welcome you to Thursday Musical’s 123rd season at our new home – Antonello Hall at the MacPhail Center for Music.

We are thrilled to continue and expand our long association with MacPhail by holding all of our Thursday Morning Artist Series concerts (except our December 4 Organ Concert) in beautiful Antonello Hall.

Our programmers have spent the summer putting together a fabulous season for us. Our opening concert is October 9 at MacPhail. Come early and enjoy pastries and coffee from our Thursday Musical silver service at 9:30 AM. The concert begins at 10:30 AM. This concert is free and open to the public, so it is an excellent opportunity to bring your friends and introduce them to Thursday Musical.

Our fall Home Programs will be on October 30 with four homes from which you may choose, three in the morning and one in the evening. The Home Programs are always some of my favorites, as it is delightful to hear music performed in the intimacy of a home.

Our Community Concerts are scheduled at many venues and times across the Twin Cities.

Besides excellent acoustics and a central location, moving back to Minneapolis also gives concert attendees an opportunity to lunch at nearby restaurants. Park once and make it an event! See page 9 for a list of restaurants within walking distance.

Thursday Musical’s history has been intertwined with MacPhail’s for over a century.

Our Historian Lois Cooper has written an article on our long relationship with MacPhail, which is on page 3.

Thursday Morning Artist Series at MacPhail!

On October 9, the 2014-15 Thursday Morning Artist Series commences in the beautiful Antonello Hall at MacPhail Center for Music.

This wonderful hall will be equally graced by wonderful Thursday Musical performers, performing classic repertoire, world premieres and unique collaborations! Each concert features a variety of musicians guaranteed to inspire and delight!

The opening concert features Gabriel Quenneville-Belair, 2014 College Piano Young Artist Competition Scholarship Winner. New Thursday Musical member, soprano Meghann Schmidt and pianist Marianne Fleming-Bryan will present a selection of songs and arias.

Jennifer Kennard, flute, Teresa Richardson, cello, and Mary Jo Gothmann, piano, will present exciting and vibrant repertoire by Asha Srinivasan – Dviraag, and Trio for Flute, Cello, and Piano

by Dello Joio. New member Will Richardson, cello will perform Benjamin Britten’s Sonata for Cello, Op. 65, accompanied by Stephen Self, piano. Plan to attend this exciting opening concert and welcome these new performing members!

On October 23, the Young Artist Scholarship Competition Winner performer will be Madeline Sheard, cello. Thursday Musical members performing on this concert include: Dragan Stojkovic, violin, with Mary Goetz, piano (Ludwig van Beethoven - Sonata for Violin, No. 10), the Lake String Quartet (Carol Margolis, violin, Nanette Goldman, violin, Ingrid Koller, viola, Daryl Carlson, cello) with Vern Maetzold, piano, performing Piano Quintet, Op. 1 by Erno Dohnanyi, and Elizabeth Longhurst, soprano, collaborating with Nina Olsen, clarinet, and Mary Goetz, piano, performing selections from the beautiful Chants d' Auvergne by Joseph Canteloube.

Membership Notes A wonderful chamber music concert enjoyed with friends followed by a lunch outing….what could be better! That’s exactly what a group from the northern suburbs of Fridley and New Brighton have been doing for two decades! “I probably wouldn’t have ventured down to Bloomington all these years were it not for this group of friends. We will surely continue to enjoy Thursday Musical at our new MacPhail location,” says Norma Nelson, enthusiastically.

This note captures what separates Thursday Musical from other arts groups in our area. At the heart of our organization is the superb chamber music presented each year at the Thursday Morning Artist Series, the Home Programs and the Community Concerts.

Premiered works, entertaining moderators, varied programs by talented artists and dynamic student performers are but a few of the reasons these programs rival any to be heard in the Twin Cities. It is, however, our membership that makes Thursday Musical unique. All of you, your friends, your family and guests who attend these concerts share something special. To enjoy music with people that you care about makes the entire experience uniquely memorable.

Thursday Musical Historical Venues and Connection to MacPhail

This 1942 ad from the 50th Anniversary Thursday Musical booklet recalls the cooperation between Thursday Musical and MacPhail that began during the first fifty years of Thursday Musical’s 122-year-history. It suggests continued cooperation for another fifty years which in fact occurred. But no one then predicted that in the fall of 2014, Thursday Musical would hold its morning concerts at the MacPhail Center for Music in its current location at 501 S. 2nd Street in downtown Minneapolis.

In earlier days Thursday Musical and MacPhail were located in almost adjoining locations: MacPhail at 12 th and LaSalle and Thursday Musical at the YWCA at 1130 Nicollet Avenue. Their proximity can explain why auditions were held for many years in the MacPhail auditorium and that student recitals were also held there in the 1930s.

Thursday Musical began in Conservatory Hall in the Northwestern Conservatory at 608 Nicollet Avenue in downtown Minneapolis in November 1892. Concerts were held there for two years. To accommodate larger audiences, programs were held in various churches located downtown.

These included St. Mark’s Church Guild Hall on Sixth Street between Nicollet and Hennepin Avenues, the First Unitarian Church located at the corner of Eighth Street and LaSalle Avenue, Unity Church, Plymouth Congregational Church at Eighth Street and Nicollet Avenue and the First Baptist Church at Tenth and Harmon.

During the early years of Mrs. Godfrey’s term as president of Thursday Musical, 1920-1956, the Garrick Theater was used for regular concerts and the opera productions of the 1920s. In the 1930s operas were presented at the Orpheum, the Shubert and the Lyceum theaters. Thursday Musical finally found a home in the Benton Hall Auditorium of the YWCA at 1130 Nicollet Avenue. Programs continued there from 1937 until 1973 when the building was razed. Subsequent locations were

at the Walker Art Center, Temple Israel and the Bloomington Center for the Arts.

In addition to the institutional cooperation, there were connections with William MacPhail, the founder of the MacPhail School of Music and his wife Margaret Gilmor MacPhail. Violinist William MacPhail was born in Glasgow in 1881. At the age of five, he came to Minneapolis and was educated in the Minneapolis Public Schools. He later studied in Berlin, Prague and Brussels. He joined the Minneapolis Symphony at its beginning in 1903. He established the MacPhail School of Music in 1907. From 1928 to 1950 he was the conductor of the Minneapolis Apollo Club. He appeared on a Thursday Musical Program in November 1910. In 1912 Mrs. William MacPhail was a member of the board of Thursday Musical. The couple appeared together in December 1915 on a Thursday Musical program. Margaret MacPhail had studied piano with Emil Oberhoffer, the first conductor of the Minneapolis Symphony. Mr. and Mrs. MacPhail performed together on a Thursday Musical program in 1921 playing the Faure Sonata for Violin and Piano in A major, Op. 13.

Perhaps the practice in recent years to schedule two Thursday Musical programs a year at MacPhail was a preliminary step in the recent step of relocating its concerts there. In any event, it is surely a fitting end to this tale of prior connections.

Meet Thursday Musical’s Newest Performing Members Meghann Schmidt, soprano Meghann Schmidt has appeared in operas and musicals with Theater Latté Da (La bohème, Susannah), Skylark Opera (Iolanthe), Colorado Lyric Opera (Into the Woods), CU Opera (La bohème, Turn of the Screw, Die Fledermaus, Dialogue of the Carmelites), Top Hat Theater (Cinderella), and the Black Hills Summer Music Festival (Carmen, The Old Maid and the Thief), as guest soloist with the Minnesota Philharmonic (Knoxville: Summer of 1915), the St. Thomas Liturgical Choir and performing German Lied in the Stephaniensaal and Johaneum concert halls in Graz, Austria. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of St. Thomas and a Master of Music degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Will Richardson, cello Will Richardson is an active freelance cellist and instructor in the Twin Cities. He has performed with the Mill City Summer Opera, American Ballet Theater, Duluth-Superior Symphony, Evansville Philharmonic, Owensboro Symphony, Marion Philharmonic, and the Richmond Symphony, among others. He was assistant principal cellist of the National Orchestral Institute and attended the Indiana University Summer Music Festival. He recently performed as part of the opening ceremonies for baseball’s 2014 All Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis.

Mr. Richardson completed his undergraduate and performer diploma degrees at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. While at Indiana University, he was awarded the Eva Heinitz Scholarship, Dean's Award, Merit Scholarship, and the Faculty Music Award. Mr. Richardson has received Suzuki Cello Teacher training through the Suzuki Associations of the Americas and has developed his own teaching method combining the Suzuki method with a traditional pedagogical approach. His previous teaching experience includes, St. Joseph's School of Music, The College of Saint Benedict, and Ramsey International Fine Arts Center in Minneapolis. He currently maintains a teaching studio in Roseville, MN.

Peter Arnstein, piano Dr. Peter Arnstein is a pianist and composer based in the Twin Cities. He has often served as pianist and harpsichordist with the Minnesota Orchestra, and has accompanied and recorded with many members of the Twin Cities’ two main orchestras and college music faculties. A winner of international competitions in both composition and piano, he has toured the Midwest as pianist and composer-in-residence for the Sylmar Chamber Ensemble, was a frequent pianist with the Macalester Trio, and is currently an active composer and arranger. He teaches piano and composition at the St. Paul Conservatory of Music, the Mt. Calvary School of Music in Excelsior, and at his studio in Minneapolis. He has performed numerous times at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland, as both piano soloist and harpsichord soloist, as accompanist for violinist Michael Antonello, with whom he made 8 CDs, and as part of the piano trio, Trio di Vita, which premiered his Trio Jazzico Nostalgico and Scottish Fantasy. Dr. Arnstein’s compositions have been published in both the United States and Europe. He has a doctorate in piano from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master's from the University of Illinois-Urbana, (both schools chose him as their representative to the Artistic Ambassador Awards of the State Department) and a Bachelor's from the Manhattan School of Music. peterarnstein.com.

Thursday Musical Board Member Spotlight: Judy Blomgren The Thursday Musical Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Judy Blomgren as Vice President IV – Student Section. Judy is a native of Bloomington, Minnesota and received her BST degree from Mankato State University in 1976 with an emphasis in Strings and Piano. Judy began her public school teaching career in the Anoka Hennepin School district in 1978 at Northdale Junior High. The highlight during her time at Northdale was when her 8th and 9th grade Orchestra was chosen to perform at the MMEA convention in 1989. In 1992 Judy was appointed to become the Orchestra director at Champlin Park High School. Highlights during her career at Champlin Park include being chosen as one of the Top 20 teachers in the Anoka Hennepin School district in 2001. She received her Masters in Education from St. Catherine University in 2004, was nominated as a candidate for Minnesota Teacher of the year in 2006, and her Concert Orchestra was invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in 2009. Ms. Blomgren retired from active public school teaching in June of 2014. Presently she is the Organist at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Brooklyn Park, and is a member of the Evergreen Club. She lives in Brooklyn Park with her cat Ava and her dog Ziggie and is excited to join the TM Board.

Fall Community Concerts

Marion Judish, violin (Sept. 21st concert date)

Thursday Musical’s Community Concert season has already begun! With a diverse array of venues and performers, this season is sure to please!

The first concert this season took place at Walker Place in Minneapolis on September 10. Walker Place expressed an interest in partnering with Thursday Musical and we will be presenting eight concerts there this season. The first featured cellist Timothy Perry performing music by Antonín Dvořák with Robert Murphy at the piano. Clarinetist Nina Olsen also appeared on this concert.

On September 21 Woodbury Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church will host our second Community Concert. A rather new venue for Thursday Musical, the church is establishing its own Marian and Stanley Parrish Arts Series. Thursday Musical flutist Peggy Doerrie will perform with the FluteSpiration Quartet, a vibrant professional flute ensemble dedicated to high quality chamber music performances. The three other flutists in the quartet include Trudi Anderson, Donna Hryniewicki, and Sandra Sheih. Also appearing on this concert are Marion Judish, violin and Jenya Trubnikava, piano.

On October 8 Thursday Musical returns to Walker Place to present Charlotte Palmiter on the clarinet, collaborating with pianist Patricia Nortwen. Together they will perform a full program focusing on American music.

Another relatively new venue for our Community Concerts Series is the Golden Living Center Lake Ridge in Roseville. This will be the site of an October 16 performance by pianist Max Radloff of two Scarlatti Sonatas, Beethoven’s Andante favori and Schubert’s lovely G-flat Impromptu. Max will also join clarinetist Karen K. Hansen’s duo with flutist Nancy Wucherpfenning to play works by American composer Ron Nelson, and Dmitri Shostakovich. Karen and Nancy will fill out the program with classical duets by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart, and G.F. Händel, as well as Sir Arthur Bliss’s charming Two Nursery Rhymes and Heitor Villa-Lobos’s Chôros No. 2.

On October 19 Jim Reilly, tenor, and Beatrice Giere will perform an unusual program of songs by Czech composers, all sung in Czech, at the beautiful Owatonna Arts Center, a favorite venue in our series. Jim will offer a few written and spoken comments about the composers and their music. Everyone is

welcome, but Jim and Bea especially hope to meet the descendants of some of the early Czech settlers of Owatonna.

Nancy Paddleford will also appear, treating the audience to music of Heitor Villa-Lobos, along with Études Tableaux by Sergei Rachmaninoff and the deceptively rich Nocturne for the Left Hand Alone by Alexander Scriabin.

Continuing the wind quartet trend begun earlier in this series, clarinetist Ona Pinsonneault will bring her OTL Clarinet Quartet to Loren on Park in Minneapolis on October 29. The group will present an entertaining and varied program of classical pieces, Broadway tunes and patriotic hymns. The quartet also includes Patti Albright, Judy Tarabek and Richard Weber, clarinetists who regularly go out to lunch together after rehearsals, which inspired their name “Out To Lunch.”

Thursday Musical has so much more to offer its members than just our wonderful Thursday Morning Artist Series, and a Community Concert is a great way to take in even more music performed by our outstanding artists. The two concert series listed at Woodbury Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church and the Owatonna Arts Center are open to the public and accept a free-will offering as admission. Please consider supporting these venue partners of ours by attending a concert, and have a fabulous musical experience in the process!

Baby Blue Arts Features Three Thursday Musical 2014 Student Winners

Three of the first prize winners of Thursday Musical’s 2014 Young Artist Scholarship Competition were videotaped in June for broadcast on the cable TV program, Baby Blue Arts Presents.

The featured students were: University of Minnesota doctoral candidate Gabriel QuennevilleBelair , piano (First Place College Piano), Christina Christensen, mezzo-soprano (First Place College Advanced Voice) and Clair Elrod, violin (First Place College Strings).

The complete outstanding 30-minute program was featured on the Internet in August at babybluearts.com, and it will be airing on local television and on local TV stations throughout the country beginning this fall. You can also view performances and interviews at thursdaymuscal.org/-competition/.

Vocalist Christina Christensen, as part of her interview, tells the story of how she survived hitting a black bear while traveling from Duluth to Minneapolis the evening before her performance.

The bear came directly in front of the car and totaled the vehicle, and the bear did not survive. In spite of being shook up and having to scramble for transportation the night before, Christina delivered a wonderful performance the next day.

Thursday Musical performing member Laurie Patton heads the Baby Blue Arts program. The mission of Baby Blue Arts is to showcase Minnesota musicians using volunteers, with their considerable talents, to present local artists in high quality audio in a visually appealing setting. Patton welcomes interested Thursday Musical performing members to book a free recording session for broadcast. To schedule, contact Laurie at 612-269-4681.

Fall Home Programs The Home Programs are always a favorite event for Thursday Musical members. On October 30, four programs will be graciously hosted by Greg and Lisa Buck (Edina), Julie Ann Greif (Minneapolis), Carolyn Britton (St. Paul) and Mary Kirchner (Edina). Programs are at 10:30 AM, with coffee served at 10:00 AM, and 7:30 PM, with dessert served at 7:00 PM. For program listings, please see the Events of Note.

Morning host Greg Buck won the Thursday Musical high school piano scholarship in the spring of 1972. He remembered that longtime member Barbara Nymark called him with the news. He is now on the Board of Regents as an alumnus of St. Olaf. With friend and Schmitt Music owner Doug Schmitt (also an alumnus of St. Olaf), he has been gradually placing new Steinways for students in the dorm lounges.

Parking at MacPhail Center for Music Meters: The least expensive parking will be the parking meters on the street at $1 per hour.

Metors accept US quarters, dollar coins, and credit cards: American Express, Visa and Mastercard.

Parking Ramps:: There are several parking ramps and a surface parking lot nearby which range in price from $4 on weekdays to $3 on weekends. Handicapped Parking: There are four handicapped parking stalls available and ramps at curbs by all entrances and exits. There is also a drop off and pick up site on the east side of the building.
