Q3 2025 Newsletter

Introduction

Dear Colleagues,

It’s all happening here at Thurlow Nunn Group! Our 150th year in business is proving to be a busy one. We are 5 full months in as I write this, and we have much to celebrate and recognise.

As we mark this incredible milestone, I want to take a moment to reflect on what it means to build something that lasts. Over a century evolving with the times, and weathering every challenge, speaks to a legacy of care, trust and respect. This anniversary is not just a celebration of our past; it’s a call to keep shaping the future with the same bold spirit that brought us here. By combining this celebration with the fantastic opportunity to raise funds for Dementia UK. We have come together and shown true grit. We will have seen hikes up mountains, rows down rivers and many a cake sold – all these challenges playing their vital role in the achievement of our collective goal: to raise £150,000 for Dementia UK. Thanks for everything you’ve done so far; please keep up the momentum!

I attended a conference this week with Jon Sopel, as guest speaker (formerly BBC News’s North America editor), famous for his public spat with President Trump, though not quite to the degree of that with Elon Musk last week. Speaking of bold spirits, you may have seen headlines about their latest high-profile disagreement. While their clash has stirred plenty of commentary, it also highlights something relevant to us: the tension between vision and legacy, disruption, and tradition. At Thurlow Nunn Group, we’ve always believed that true progress comes not from noise, but from meaningful action—combining our heritage with forward-thinking decisions that earn real trust. As I look ahead, I see economic uncertainty but with this huge opportunity. Opportunity to serve as well as prosper, even grow quickly but this remains only possible with all your hard work and commitment to our family business.

We are looking forward to the Family Fun Day on 6th July – we have a great day planned - where we will celebrate together the then, now and the future.

Let’s continue to lead with integrity while embracing innovation, staying true to the values that define us.

Thank you for being part of our exciting journey.

Kindest regards

Will Tew

TN and TNS Managers Conference

For the first time, we combined both operational businesses’ annual conferences. On Thursday 6th February we met at Bedford Lodge, Newmarket. 2024 was a year to both reflect on and to celebrate. Tough trading and big decisions meant we faired quite well, all considering. The Thurlow Nunn Group continues to remain a constant as an employer in the region but without the collaboration of you, our colleagues, nothing would be possible.

For the evening awards dinner, we were delighted to be joined by colleagues, manufacturer partners, and customers as we celebrated the achievements of Thurlow Nunn and Thurlow Nunn Standen staff, as well as taking part in an auction to raise money for Dementia UK. Thank you to all those that attended!

River Deben Challenge

On Friday, our incredible team from TNS Melton took on a mighty challenge as part of our 150 Year Fundraising events and they absolutely smashed it!

Rowing an impressive 11 miles along the River Deben to raise vital funds for Dementia UK, Simon Pink, Ben Hockley, John Drake and Adrian Brown gave it their all and made every pull of the oar count.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported them and cheered them on from the sidelines. Your encouragement powered them forward every step of the way. Together, we raised an incredible £31,543.

Scafell Pike

On June 21st, in celebration of our 150 Year Anniversary, the Thurlow Nunn Luton team completed the challenge of climbing Scafell Pike, England’s highest mountain, all in support of raising £11,500 for Dementia UK and Keech Hospice.

It wasn’t easy, but knowing it was for such meaningful causes gave them the strength to keep going. Together, the team made a real difference!

Cruise for a Cause Raises £16,000

Motoring enthusiasts from across the region took part in this unique event, which celebrated both the beauty of classic cars and the power of giving back. From a striking Vauxhall Insignia wrapped in Dementia UK branding to an impeccably preserved 1970s Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Participants embarked on a carefully crafted route, deciphering clever clues along the way, putting both their driving and detective skills to the test.

We are thrilled to be able to say, that thanks to the incredible support of the local community and participants, the event raised an impressive £16,000 for Dementia UK.

Success at the Suffolk Show

A proud moment for our team and what an incredible way to celebrate our 150th year in business! We were honoured to have been awarded The Best Stand in the Show and Best Agriculture Dealer or Contractor’s Stand awards at The Suffolk Show 2025. TNS also won the George Thurlow Salver, originally presented by John Thurlow in 1981 for our 100th Suffolk show originating in 1881!

Thank you to Cheffins for their generous donation of £10,000, presented by Simon Gooderham and Bill King. This significant contribution brings us closer to our £150,000 fundraising goal for Dementia UK.

We’re always on the lookout for talented people to join the Thurlow Nunn Group – and you could help us find them! Even better? You’ll get £500 for doing it.

Here’s how it works:

If you refer someone who joins the business in a permanent role, you’ll receive a £500 bonus, paid in two stages:

• £200 after they successfully pass their probation

• £300 once they’ve completed 12 months of service

Simple, right?

What do I need to do?

1. Email HR at hr@tngroup.co.uk with the candidate’s name and the role they’re applying for – before they submit their application.

2. Make sure your referral includes your name in their application.

3. Sit back and wait while they shine

A Few Things to Note:

• The scheme is for permanent jobs only – not temporary positions.

• You can’t refer someone if you’re the recruiting manager or involved in the hiring process.

• Managers can’t refer someone into their own department.

• Only one bonus is paid per successful hire – first referrer gets the reward.

• Both you and your referral must still be employed with us at the time of each payment.

• HR will confirm eligibility

Mental Health in the Workplace

In our industry, the work is often demanding physically, mentally, and emotionally. Whether you’re out in the field dealing with unpredictable weather, or in the workshop under pressure to meet tight deadlines, the nature of the job can bring challenges to mental wellbeing.

Understanding the Pressures

Where to get support:

• Mental Health First Aiders (MHFAs)

We have over 20 trained MHFAs across the business who are here to listen, support, and guide you to the right help when needed. They’re not therapists, but they are approachable colleagues ready to support in confidence. Please refer to the wellbeing section of the intranet for their details.

Lets build a culture of openness - We’re encouraging conversations around mental health at all levels. Talking about how you’re feeling isn’t a weakness—it’s the first step to staying strong.

Respect rest and balance - Wherever possible, we’re promoting healthy work-life balance, proper breaks, and support around flexible working.

You are not alone

Mental health matters and support is never far away. Whether you’re having a tough day or need long-term help, we’re here for you. Let’s keep the conversation going and look out for one another because a safer, healthier workplace starts with all of us.

Mental Health Facts

1. 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health issue at some point in their lives. Mental health is just as important as physical health – and it affects us all.

2. You don’t need to be in crisis to ask for help.

Speaking up early – even about small struggles – can prevent bigger issues later.

3. Sleep, diet, and exercise all impact mental wellbeing. Taking care of your body helps take care of your mind.

4. Talking helps.

Having someone listen – whether it's a friend, manager, or mental health first aider – can make a huge difference.

5. Mental health doesn’t discriminate. It affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and job roles. Everyone deserves support and understanding.

6. Small acts of kindness improve mental wellbeing – for you and others. Checking in on a colleague, offering help, or just saying thank you can lift someone’s day.

Well done Emmett!

We are incredibly proud to have so many rising stars within our team! Congratulations to Emmett Thacker, our talented Apprentice Technician at TNS Littleport, who has been awarded the Apprentice of the Year Award by Moreton Morrell College. The award recognises individuals who go above and beyond expectations, consistently producing outstanding work while showing exceptional professionalism and a strong commitment to their personal development.

WELL DONE!

Congratulations Marcus

A huge congratulations to Marcus Ling, Parts Manager at TNS Kennett, on receiving the Suffolk Agricultural Association Long Service Award for an incredible 40 years of dedicated service.

Marcus was recognised for his outstanding commitment to the agricultural industry and to Thurlow Nunn Standen. Pictured is Marcus receiving his award with James Thurlow.

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try.”

Apprenticeship Success

We’re proud to congratulate the following individuals who have successfully completed their apprenticeships. Their hard work, dedication, and growth have made a lasting impression, and we’re excited to see what their future holds.

Well done to:

• James Enright at Norwich completing his Level 2 Autocare

• Max Cunliffe at Beccles completing his Level 2 Autocare

• Connor Ward at Attleborough completing his Parts Apprenticeship with Distinction

• Jack Yardy at Littleport completing his Land Based Service Engineer Apprenticeship with Distinction

• Josh Peters at Attleborough completing his Land Based Service Engineer Apprenticeship

Completing an apprenticeship is a significant achievement that takes commitment, resilience, and a passion for learning. You should all be incredibly proud we certainly are! Here’s to the next step in your journey.

Safety Training Round Up

There’s been a lot going on in terms of safety training over the past few months. Firstly a big thank you to all staff who have attended training sessions, and to the Managers who’ve supported by booking courses and giving their teams the time to attend. Ongoing training is vital to ensure everyone has the opportunity to learn, develop, and refresh their knowledge.

Don’t forget about the online courses available on Power Plus – these do expire! (I’ve recently had to retake one myself.) It’s a quick and efficient way to stay up to date and demonstrate your competence.

What We’ve Delivered So Far in 2025

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)

• 2 courses delivered (March & May) at TNS Attleborough and TN Kings Lynn

• 10 new MHFA-qualified staff – including 2 Service Managers and 2 Branch Managers

• We now have over 20 MHFA-qualified staff across the group

• Ideally, each branch should have at least two MHFA-qualified staff – if you’re interested in the next course, please contact Dom Greenwood, Head of Health, Safety and Environmental.

Emergency First Aid & Fire Safety

• 1 Emergency First Aid at Work course (7 attendees)

• 1 Fire Safety course (6 attendees)

• More courses are planned for later in the year – speak to your Service or Branch Manager if you’d like to become a First Aider or Fire Marshal

Technical Safety Training

• Slinging and Signalling: 3 courses (Attleborough & Littleport – April)

• Banksman Training: 9 courses (Attleborough, Littleport & Melton – Feb to April)

• Abrasive Wheels & Working at Height: 4 courses (Attleborough & Littleport – Feb to April)

Thank you to Rachel Martin for organising these sessions!

Forklift Training

• Counterbalance Forklift: March (Kennett) and April (Attleborough)

• Telescopic Forklift Conversion: March & April (Melton & Attleborough)

Thank you to Joanne Eley for coordinating these!

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

CPD is just as important as formal training. Recently, I completed the IOSH Fire Safety Managers qualification and an advanced First Aid Instructor module on catastrophic bleeding, which will be included in First Aid training from 2026 due to the increase in knife-related incidents.

Remember, CPD doesn’t have to be classroom-based – it could be a video, podcast, webinar, or article. Why not explore something that enhances your knowledge?

If there’s any specific training you feel you need, or something you’re keen to attend, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’m always happy to explore new training opportunities and support any wider health and safety needs. Thank you again for your continued commitment!
