FROM THE PUBLISHER I’m writing this at 4am, after getting back from a one day jaunt around the state, so please be patient if I ramble a little. I tend to do that sometimes – not just when I’m tired, but especially when I’m excited about something. It so happens that I’ve made 3 of these cross state runs within the past week – each time meeting with riders, dealers, and business owners from just about every corner of Ohio as we prepare for the upcoming riding season. In fact, last night, we helped host a meeting with the Dayton Motorcycle Club for M/C’s, promoters, ride organizers, and others looking to host motorcycle events over the next year in Southwest Ohio. It was a packed house – standing room only, as a wide range of riders and event organizers all came together to share their plans and work together to create a single “pocket calendar” with just about every ride and motorcycle event in the area from May through December. This is a charitable effort, inspired by the Greater Akron Motorcycle Events Calendar that we’ve collaborated with Rich Robinson and the Greater Akron Motorcycle Club on for the past several years. It’s a pretty cool thing when you look around a packed room and see such a wide range of riders, backgrounds, and interests – all there, because they love riding and want to support the motorcycle community! And despite all the differences, everyone left with the understanding and belief that their events would be successful with the support of all the groups in the room! Once again, it’s hard not to consider the “real world” life lessons that others might take from our world. Just imagine if all the leaders of our country rode. Where would we be, if our leaders understand that we were all in this together – all on the same journey, with a shared interest in everyone’s success? Not all my travels, though, were about the Event Calendars. I spent a number of days in Southeast Ohio running along the Ohio River and exploring the back roads along 70 and down 77 towards Marietta. It’s really such beautiful country – and the famous “Triple Nickel” is just one of an endless selection of really cool twisty backgrounds that are begging to be explored. We’re focusing on this portion of the state, along with a few others, as we look to expand our presence and continue growing this magazine. We want to constantly develop new material and share more travels with you – our readers. As we share new events and Ride Stops here in the magazine, we hope that they inspire you to join us on some new roads yourself – and possibly even expand your own horizons. Life’s a lot more interesting, when you’re discovering new roads and meeting new people. And as luck would have it – that’s the business we’re in. Thanks for allowing us this opportunity – by taking the time to pick up this magazine and possibly even supporting our sponsors. We sincerely appreciate your support – and hope that our passion for the open road and love of our riding community might inspire you to join us on that road as well. Live well and Ride Strong!

As Told By

THE IRON COWBOY

A.D. Farrow joins forces with the Ricart Autogroup A.D. Farrow Harley-Davidson – founded by Alfred Farrow and his wife Lilly Farrow in 1912 – has turned a new page in its evolution as it was announced that Ricart Automotive, a Columbus based automotive group, would be assuming majority ownership of the three central Ohio Harley dealerships. As reported in Dealernews – “We’re beyond thrilled to be growing the Ricart brand with A.D. Farrow Co. Harley Davidson. Harley is one of the oldest and strongest brands in our country, and the Ricart family has been avid Harley Davidson riders for years,” said Rick Ricart, President of Ricart Automotive Group. “We’re excited to get to know the A.D. Farrow employees and their families and to take on the next chapter of this historic brand.”

Rick Ricart, President of Ricart Automotive Group Bob Althoff, who has owned A.D. Farrow for 18 years will remain on as a minority partner and continue to be a part of the management team. Indeed, all the announcements have stressed on the merging of the groups and consistency in staffing / management. Dan Eaton, with Columbus Business First, reported that Althoff stated “My kids aren’t in the business. I can’t live forever but my family can – that’s the A.D. Farrow family; the Ricart family—our new large family!” Over the last several decades the motorcycle industry as a whole has undoubtedly evolved and gone through numerous changes. Throughout this time, Bob Althoff has always been an innovative leader in the motorcycle community – both in terms of Ohio and the industry as a whole. He helped pioneer the motorcycle training programs that are now offered statewide and he recently acquired and then revived the motorcycle industry journal Dealernews (www.Dealernews. com). From providing complimentary AMA memberships with new motorcycle purchases to hosting the annual ABATE Awareness Rally each year – Althoff has always been a staunch advocate of motorcyclist’s rights and understood that 8

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

we need to actively support the motorcycle community. Mike Stock, ABATE of Ohio Inc. COB adds, “Bob Althoff and Doug Kamerer along with the AD Farrow dealerships have been great supporting Abate over the years, helping us with numerous events through the year; even giving us a place to have meetings and get-togethers in their parking lot! We wish all the best of luck to the new AD Farrow and the program and hope we can continue to form an even bigger and better bond.” I recall running into Bob down in Orlando several years ago when it was first announced that the AIMExpo would be coming to Columbus. He was beyond ecstatic and recognized this as a tremendous opportunity for central Ohio – well beyond his own properties. He of course had been a huge advocate of such a move and spent the next year actively promoting the Ohio motorcycle scene to the Motorcycle Industry Council – the hosts of the major industry showcase. I have no doubt that his efforts were a large factor in bringing the show back to Columbus this year and next year too. From the sound of things, it appears as though Rick Ricart will bring even more resources and long-term strength to the A.D. Farrow name – and with Bob Althoff remaining as a part of the new larger team, it’s a great thing for the Ohio riding community. As part of making the announcement Rick made a YouTube video that they posted to their social media. It stressed both the legacy and future of Harley-Davidson, as well as their commitment to the A.D. Farrow brand. He also discussed moving the dealership in Pataskala to a new location acquired by Ricart earlier this year. He closed out the video by exclaiming - “A.D. Farrow and Ricart are going to take Harley-Davidson into the next century and beyond… Let’s RIDE!” We look forward to continuing to work with the group and supporting their efforts. Thunder Roads Ohio will be hosting one of our Championship Bike Shows at A.D. Farrow this year – stay tuned for more information on this and other exciting announcements to come!

EVENT 101: Sponsorships and Your Marketing Plan Sponsorships can make or break an event – often times allowing an event or ride to be in the black before the first motorcycle is even fired up. Unfortunately, though, they are often one of the most challenging aspects of hosting an event. Obtaining a sponsorship basically involves you selling your event to a local business or organization – often times to a person that isn’t a rider and doesn’t really understand our culture. For many, the “sales” aspect makes it even more of a challenge. However there are some basic tips which can greatly improve your success rate. These are fundamental considerations that you need to understand before making your first pitch. Visit the TRO BLOG at ThunderRoadsOhio.com for a practical discussion of how to develop an effective marketing plan that can help deliver PAYING SPONSORS for your upcoming events! You don’t want to miss this!

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

COB REPORT

MAY 4, 2019

Hi Friends,

It is 16 degrees even though the sun is out and bright and it looks like a nice day. However, there is 2 inches of salt on the road so even if I put all my winter gear on, I still cannot ride on salt. I am friends with some West Virginia riders and it seems like they get more nice days than I do up in Toledo, Ohio. So, on this day in February, I’m going to dream as I write this article that spring is just around the corner. With all the wisdom our government agencies have, they went and changed the way I get my stats to report on how we are riding. So, I’m going to get trained on the new way. But I did find out that last year the ending number of fatalities was 147 and that is below 2017s number of 157 and even lower than 2016s number of 204. Good work by all riders on riding SMART. Motorcycle Ohio is registering for classes and so far, the numbers are almost double from last year at this time. We also have a new director at Motorcycle Ohio, Tyler Fehrman. Michele Piko had been running things after Chuck retired. Tyler has been a rider in the past and I think he will work out with a little of our help. Congratulations Tyler and we all look forward to working with you! One of the stories that I tell is about going to have coffee before work and this guy always asked me where I went last weekend and I would tell him and then I would say to him, why don’t you go with me next week, you would have fun. He always had an excuse. Then one day I got a look at his driver’s license and he had no endorsement. That was why he’d never go with us. He liked to ride and had been riding for years, just never got his endorsement. I gave this guy all the info for Motorcycle Ohio and what sold the deal was that he would have his endorsement at the end of the weekend course. If you think someone might be in the same situation, bring up the MO program and how easy it is to get endorsed. Most of the motorcycle crashes involve motorcyclists who are not trained. Riding season is almost here so you need to get ready, meaning you need to get in shape to ride. The same as you need to get your bike serviced, you need to get your body in shape. If you have had something bothering you, get it fixed before riding season gets here. And remember that rattle under your bike

last year… get it fixed too. In your owner’s manual there are suggestions on what you need to service before you get her out. Last year we were working on getting the hearing protection bill passed so you could use ear plugs in both ears. Yes, for many years it has been illegal to wear earplugs in both ears. This all came about back in the day when everyone was installing speakers in their helmet. There is a group from the Cleveland area who started working on a bill to allow ear plugs for hearing protection. It made it through the House and through Committee but did not get voted on in the Senate. Now this year we need to start over, but it will go faster since we have all the ground work done. We will keep you up to date.

As you plan your rides this summer, try to support your local ABATE of Ohio runs because we are Dedicated to the Freedom of the Road and we work hard to keep you safe and free.

MOTORCYCLE MINISTRIES Getting Fed at Chic-fil-A

Christian Motorcyclists Association

I bet I know what you’re thinking…either, “Duh, what else would you do there?” or “What a weird title for a faith article.” I get it, but it’s true. The other night God sent me to Chic-fil-A to get fed. The crazy thing is, I wasn’t even all that hungry. Let me explain.

Spring is just around the corner…

It was Tuesday afternoon and I had a very long day at work, one of those days that made you question whether you had made good choices in your life. I overslept, missed the bus I take every day, rushed around to get out of the house and backed into the trash can on the way out of the driveway. That’s the kind of day it was from the very beginning. I was tired, mentally, physically and spiritually. I had been on the road the previous weekend and worse off, I was fighting off the flu.

Woot, Woot! Finally, we are so close to spring we can hear the motors running! What a crazy, cold winter we’ve had! But it’s soon to be over and we can blow the dust off our bikes and get ready for the road! Speaking of that…are you ready? There’s a lot to do and usually so little time to do it in. That’s life though, rush, rush, rush…get this done, go to that event, oh and there’s that thing tomorrow. So, what about tomorrow? I mean, it’s okay to make plans for it, but did you know that it isn’t promised to us? The Bible in James 4:13-14 says, (Mary-phrased) “Let’s go to this town and buy and sell until next year and if we’re lucky…”

My wife called on the way home and wanted to know what our dinner plans were. For ease, I suggested we just go out. My stepson had requested Chic-fil-A so we headed out towards Akron. My wife asked why we didn’t go to the one closer to us in Strongsville? I replied simply-- traffic. We arrived, ordered and sat down, prayed and began to eat our meal. I spotted this man in a wheel chair rolling by our table with his kids. He was missing his right arm and right leg, but other than that, appeared quite healthy. In an instant, Charlie had introduced himself and our conversation shifted from to busted wrenches, to corn fields, then finally to the Gospel.

Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya? (I just had to do my best Eastwood!) Sure, we have the freedom of the road and when the wind is flowing across our faces, we feel a freedom like no other. It’s our happy place, a peaceful place where nothing can touch us, and our minds can flow freely becoming one with nature. Yet, when we stop, does the freedom stop? Or does the reality of life hit and once again we feel the pangs of our discontent? I am here to tell you my friends, there is a place of peace and freedom even after the ride is over.

It was amazing. Charlie had this grin on his face I couldn’t explain. His body, so fully animated as he shared the story about the motorcycle accident 14 years ago where he lost both limbs and 80% of his blood…nearly dying…and praising God for it! “Had that not happened, I wouldn’t be where I am today,” said Charlie. Internally I was reassessing a few of my own situations. As we parted ways I thanked Charlie for the talk. All I could say was, “God just sent a one armed, one legged man in a wheel chair to teach me a lesson about perspective.” Seriously though, how awesome is that?

You see, we really cannot see so far down the road that our plans are a sure thing. However, we can be ready for whatever comes simply by trusting in the One who holds our future in His hands. That One is Jesus. His plans for you are to prosper you and bring you into a good place. An eternity of life and freedom that isn’t really known without Him. And He is a sure thing! Hey! We know you may be headed for the sunny state to Daytona Bike Week this month, so stop by the CMA booth and say hello or grab a quick snack from one of the local churches down there! CMA is always here when you need us, so don’t shy away! We are gathering on March 29-30th in Pickerington, Ohio at the Pickerington Nazarene Church, 11775 Pickerington Road, for our Seasons Rally. Come on over and visit, find out who we are! First time guests are free! Peace and safe travels! Mary G.

COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a non-denominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. Enjoy the family atmosphere, make life-long friends, and join an army of people dedicated to changing the world, one heart at a time in the highways and byways. Visit us at www.cmausa.org for more information. Have a message you’d like to share? If you have a message that you’d like to share with riders across Ohio and the Midwest, let us know. TRO welcomes the opportunity to work with established motorcycle ministries. Feel free to share upcoming events with us as well, by emailing information to Events.ThunderRoads@gmail.com 12 12

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

The whole situation reminded me of a passage of scripture; Man must not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. (Matthew 4:4) Jesus spoke these words to remind us that it is God who sustains us, not ourselves. None of us are without spot or blemish and believe it or not, even those of us in ministry struggle. God sent me to Chic-fil-A that night, not to eat because I was hungry, but because I needed to be spiritually fed. Scripture tells us that if we hunger and thirst after righteousness, we shall be filled. That is to say that if we study the Word of God we will be spiritually fed. If you don’t know where to start, whether it’s because you’re not yet a Christian, you’re exploring your faith, or just because you simply don’t know…there are great Christian motorcycle ministries, clubs and churches all over the state who are holding Bible study groups and services throughout the week. Seek one out, and I promise you will find what you’re looking for. C.W. “SKREEECH” Streeper Soldiers for Jesus MC: Buckeye

LEAN TRACK DAYS AT NELSONS LEDGES - ENDURANCE RACING IS BACK The last couple of years have seen vast improvements at Nelsons Ledges Road Course. From brand new pavement and curbing to ongoing renovations to the facility in general. Various track day organizations were alive and well at this legendary course the last two seasons, however actual motorcycle races had been missing. Not so for the 2019 season. LEAN Track Days will be holding three separate race events this season in conjunction with track days… LEAN is an organization formed by riders for riders. Organizer Sam Wang has invested significant time and effort to put a quality program together to promote safe riding and increase rider skills at all levels. Sam is an accomplished racer himself and has great insight as to what steps are necessary to take this program to the next level. As with any new venture, growing pains are to be expected. Details to date are PROVISIONAL. The 4-hour TEAM ENDURANCE class will include light/middle/heavyweight displacement classes. The 4-hour PONY EXPRESS will be open displacement. Teams with lightweight and middleweight bikes will compete against teams with middleweight and heavyweight bikes. Ultra lightweight bikes will have their own 2-hour endurance race. Riders must be licensed with a recognized racing organization. Full details of recognized organizations will be published in the rule book. Also there will be a WERA approved race school. After successful completion of the race school, riders will earn Provisional novice status with LEAN. I hope to bring you continued coverage of this new chapter in Nelsons Ledges road racing history throughout the coming season. Check out LEANTD.COM for additional details and ride out to take a look for yourself. Endurance race days are scheduled for June, July and August 2019. TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES Over the last several years, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked to develop local and regional Bike Shows as a means of showcasing both the rides that our readers have and the amazing works of rolling art that local shops and builders have been producing. Along the way, we discovered that many local riders had never participated in a Bike Show – never considering that their bikes were “show worthy”. It turns out, though, that most riders have an appreciation – even a love of motorcycles that goes beyond the amount of chrome on a bike or if there are water spots and dust on them. We’ve hosted Bike Shows at indoor venues that have often showcased bikes with less than a dozen miles on them – and we’ve hosted Bike Shows at outdoor venues ranging from dealership parking lots to grass fields with countless entries still hot from riding in from across the state! Throughout we’ve discovered that it’s not always the most polished that gets the attention, but it’s the love and work that goes into the bike that everyone appreciates. Even if you’ve never participated in a Bike Show before, we encourage everyone to participate and have fun with the shows! Chances are that you’ll discover a greater appreciation for what makes your bike unique and meet some other folks with a similar passion. And we’re certain you’ll have a blast! For 2019, Thunder Roads Ohio will once again host an extensive schedule of Bike Shows – ranging from local community shows and Bike Night Shows, to festivals and rallies, and culminating in our Championship Shows. We are looking to spread out into new areas, with a number of new shows being held in Southeast and Northwestern Ohio this year. We are currently scouting new locations and scheduling new shows through the end of the year. If you have a venue and are interested in hosting a TRO Championship Bike Show – or you’d like to recommend a location – we’d love to hear from you! Just send us an email at BikeShowInfo@gmail.com

NEW FOR 2019: WINNERS DRAWN YEAR-ROUND! SIMPLE DIGITAL CHECK-IN’S! “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOPS!” SPECIAL PASSPORT RIDES! SCAVENGER HUNT CHALLENGES! PRESENTED BY RUSS BROWN MOTORCYCLE ATTORNEYS AND ReasonsToRide.com Thunder Roads Ohio (TRO) is proud to present the 2019 BUCKEYE THUNDER RUN - a state-wide, summer-long riding challenge with YEAR-ROUND opportunities to WIN by hitting the coolest riding destinations and events across Ohio! This is a riding challenge like no-other and features great prizes every month that you earn by simply getting out to ride and discovering new stops ALL ACROSS OHIO and the MIDWEST!

Checking in at Ride Stops! Designated Ride Stops are listed at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and featured throughout each issue of Thunder Roads Ohio. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our editors. ALL STOPS have been screened by our Editors and are places we feel comfortable recommending to you. We never simply add a stop because they are willing to write a check.

Checking in at TRO Tour Stops! Throughout the year, the TRO ROAD CREW will be hitting rides, rallies, bike shows, and various events throughout the state – and beyond! In some cases the CREW will be attending national rallies and other events throughout the Midwest – including Michigan and Pennsylvania motorcycle events. Anywhere the TRO CREW is at – instantly becomes a RIDE STOP! There is a listing of Tour Stops in the magazine and online each month. You can sign in on the Ride Stop Clipboard or check in with your smart phone. “Make Your Own Ride Stop!” Riders can recommend a RIDE STOP by simply “Checking-In” through their facebook account with the hashtag #TRO. Within the post, BTR Riders should say that they are “Making this their Ride Stop” and that we should also. You can also include why – and even do it all within in a posted video as well. Special prizes each month are allocated for these check-in’s and the stop itself can win – if applicable. Selected “MAKE YOUR OWN RIDE STOP’s” have a chance to win up to $5,000 in prizes – and each posting increases their chances to win! In such cases, the person(s) nominating the Stop with their check-in is also eligible for additional prizes as well.

$500 Amazon® Gift Card to be awarded to a chosen Rider nominating a Winning Stop with their check-in!

Riders can take part in special themed tours held throughout the year. Themed Tour Stops! In some cases these themed tours may include a special map and designated series of stops to hit. Riders then hit the designated stops and once completed – they can win special prizes, including Amazon® and Mastercard® Gift Cards* of up to $500! Some tours can be completed in a day – while others may take a weekend, week, or more. Themed Tours are currently under development and possible tours include: OHIO BIKE WEEK WINE COUNTRY TOURS MILITARY / VETERANS TOURS AMISH COUNTRY TOURS

GEVENA / EASTERN ERIE TOUR HOCKING HILLS TOUR MOHICAN TOUR OHIO TWISTIES TOUR

Scavenger Hunts! Special Scavenger Hunts will be offered for a unique ride that’s fun and challenging. Riders will have to be on the look-out for various items, stops, and routes as they seek to complete the HUNT! Riddles and other challenges will be part of the fun. Special prizes will be offered to those that complete the challenge!

(You don’t have to, but it makes things a lot easier and more fun with it.) 3. Get the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads Magazine, the website (ThunderRoadsOhio.com), or facebook. 4. Ride out to these stops and show them your card or check in with the #TRO Hashtag on social media. 5. And then you win cool prizes, including cold hard CASH!

You can request a Ride Card through our website!

You can now go online and register for your Thunder Run Ride Card through our website – www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Simply head to the TRO Online Store and order your Ride Card. There is a $5 convenience fee for this option – but ALL PROCEEDS are applied to our Warrior Fund, sponsoring charitable motorcycle events and organizations across Ohio.

PLEASE NOTE - You can still use your previous Ride Cards. All Ride Card registrations carry over, however you are welcome to pick up a new shiny one if you’d like.

Thunder Roads will also be registering riders for Ride Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Ohio Bike Week or Bike Nights will have special booth for Ride Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering special incentives both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Run schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Ride Cards allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads Sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings.

PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your OHIO RIDE CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your ride card number! One key aspect of the BTR is that we will be limiting the number of stops to a reasonable amount each month. We are NOT simply adding anyone willing to write a check. We will be considering stops recommended by our readers and editors, and we will only select those that offer a legitimate interest to riders – making them worth the ride to visit. We are not hosting the run as simply a means of supporting the magazine, but as a fun way to promote partners and cool destinations all across the state.

RIDERS CAN CHECK IN THROUGH THEIR SMART PHONES AND SOCIAL MEDIA! IT’S NOT MANDATORY, BUT THIS ALLOWS INSTANT CHECK-IN’s AND INSTANT PRIZES! And it’s SIMPLE – 1. LIKE US ON FACEBOOK AND INSTAGRAM. 2. GET OUT! When your our riding or checking out a favorite stop – you can CHECK -IN! 3. TAKE A PICTURE OF YOURSELF, YOUR BIKE, YOUR CREW, AT THE LOCATION. 4. HOLD YOUR RIDE CARD UP, WITH YOUR NUMBER VISIBLE TO MAKE TRACKING EASIER. 5. POST THE PICTURE TO YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNT WITH THE LOCATION CHECK IN AND #TRO 6. KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR EMAIL AND OUR FACEBOOK PAGE, FOLLOW US ON FACEBOOK – AND LOOK FOR US TO ANNOUNCE YOUR NAME OR NUMBER! FOR THOSE THAT PREFER OLD SCHOOL, YOU CAN STILL CHECK IN WITH THE BOARDS – BUT IF YOU’RE ON FACEBOOK, IT’S THIS QUICK AND EASY!

One of the really exciting aspects of our ride program is that the Buckeye Thunder Run can evolve with new stops, special prizes, and other updates throughout the year! We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, we’ll investigate them, and if we agree that it’s a suitable stop – they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops may only run a few months – and possibly not consecutive. A cool winery in Geneva might be a stop early in the season, and then we bring them back during the harvest season! We can also modify the run if it turns out that something just isn’t working. We want to keep things exciting for you – the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our state. And we want to discover new spots as well, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations. Again, this is not simply a sales tool for us or meant to subsidize the magazine! We have designed this run to entertain and challenge our readers – as well as promote our partners. The Thunder Roads team has spent a lot of time collecting nominations and researching stops for the Run; but there are undoubtedly plenty more stops out there. If you have a venue or event that you would like to get involved in the run, please don’t hesitate to let us know about it. If it’s your place, we will get in touch shortly with more information on the run and what’s involved. If you are recommending a spot for someone else – we will reach out to them and let them know they have been nominated. If you can suggest a contact person, that can help expedite the process. You can send information to BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com or call 440-678-8608. As with the magazine itself, the Buckeye Thunder Run is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners across the state. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself across the state in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. Obviously, this will be a heavy focus within the magazine, but we are also working with radio and other media outlets to help spread awareness of the run. Sponsors are able to tap into this network and enjoy great exposure. Sponsors also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads to help promote various charity events across the state. The Buckeye Thunder Run is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. Thunder Roads is involved in countless charitable events across the state already – but with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Partners can assist in the sponsorship of specific events, areas of concern (such as breast cancer, child abuse, or animal shelters), or other specific areas. For more information on sponsorship, please email us at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com

The Official RIDE kicks off MAY 1, 2019! Some folks may sneak you in early, but please understand that we give a little time for people to get set up and everyone on the same page.

As we mentioned, this is a dynamic event – intended to be tweaked and developed over time. If you have ideas, suggestions, or concerns – please don’t hesitate to let us know. You can email us at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com

Toll Roads

This month we are going to talk about toll roads- why you may or may not want to ride them, plus strategies to make them more convenient and less expensive to use. Toll roads are built for two primary reasons. First, they may cross mountains or other geographic features that make them much more costly to build than other roads. Second, they are an alternate means to finance large highway projects. Many toll road projects in the 1950s-70s were financed by selling construction bonds, with the understanding that the roads would become free once tolls had paid them off. A good example is the Kentucky Turnpike, which ran from Louisville to Elizabethtown. In 1975 it became a free section of I-65 and all traces of the toll booths were removed. No one likes to spend extra money for road use, but what I hated the most on the motorcycle was having to fumble for cash at each toll booth. The Ohio Turnpike, New York Thruway and a few others used a ticket system. You were given a ticket when you got on, and when you got off, you presented your ticket and the attendant calculated your toll. Stop when you get on, again when you get off and only pay once. Chicago is at the other end of the cash convenience spectrumthrough the city, toll plazas are located every eight miles or less and you have to pay a toll at each one. My worst toll road day ever was going through there on the way to Wisconsin in the early 2000s. It was about 45 degrees and raining. The tolls were cash only in odd amounts like $1.60, varying from booth to booth. There were about ten booths to get through Illinois and I had to take off my gloves each time and dig for money. Toward the end I got so frustrated I just gave the attendant $2.00 and told him to keep the change. Instead of raising the gate, he started to say he had to give me the change and I screamed, “I don’t care- just let me go!” (Not feeling very Congenial that day!) Over time, I became aware of the availability of transponders to eliminate cash tolls. E ZPass is the electronic toll collection system used on most toll roads, bridges, and tunnels in the Midwestern and Northeastern United States. Founded in 1987, it has been adopted by Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Virginia, West Virginia and central Florida. There are 35 million of them in use!

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

Computers process the transactions and deduct payment from your E-ZPass account. You have to either authorize a credit card to be automatically charged or make payment when requested. The system typically maintains about $15 in your account. A single transponder can be registered for all your vehicles- you just have to remember to take it with you The transponder is mounted on the inside upper middle of a car windshield using Velcro. On the bike, it’s best mounted in the windshield area, the higher the better and at least two inches away from any metal objects. That clearance includes front and back, so don’t mount it on a metal surface! I find the Velcro mount doesn’t work unless the windshield is flat like the forward side of the E-ZPass. Its better to use a non-metallic holder and bracket to secure it. Important: always mount it right side up with the label side facing rearward. The West Virginia Turnpike has the worst readers anywhere- you have to slow down to 6 MPH or less and the transponder location is critical. I have tried my tank bag, rear view mirror and several other places that did not work. You MIGHT get it to work in a shirt pocket or somehow on your helmet. The only way to test is to pull up to a toll booth and see if your setup works by giving you a green light.

The E-ZPass transponder is a battery-operated, radio frequency identification (RFID) transmitter unit the size of a deck of cards; it’s a two-way radio with a microprocessor. Stored in the transponder is some basic account information, including your identification number. 28

Electronic readers are positioned above each toll lane. These antennas emit radio frequencies that communicate with the transponder. The detection zone of an antenna is typically 6 to 10 feet wide and about 10 feet long. These two devices, the transponder and the antenna, interact to complete the toll transaction.

In places like Chicago, there are antennas across the main traffic lanes and your device is read at highway speed. That’s how it ought to be. What happens if your transponder is not read? The fast lanes all have cameras that take pictures of the license plates of every vehicle that passes. The lookup system checks to see if the plate

is assigned to a transponder. If so, your account is automatically charged, no problem. (Not in WV though!) If you don’t have a transponder or money available in your account, they track down your email or street address info and send you a bill. This is hazardous and I don’t recommend it. Here’s why: A friend of mine drove through Chicago last year without an E-ZPass and got tired of stopping and paying tolls so she skipped about half a dozen of them. Several days later, she got an email demanding payment, which she did online. Later she got another notice that she ignored. (Some transactions did not post until later.) Fines compound quickly in Illinois. She protested them and lost, finally paying several hundred dollars in fines because of less than $10 in tolls.

E-ZPass mount for Yamaha FJR 1903-03.jpg The E-ZPass holder was about $9 on Amazon. It’s 3D printed plastic. Not the greatest but does the job. It’s fastened to a piece of 1/8” black ABS plastic with nylon screws that replace the crappy suction cups that came with it. The windshield side of the bracket is flat except for two spacers that can be adjusted to control the amount of space between the E-ZPass bracket and the back side of the windshield.

Even if you only drive toll roads a couple of times per year, an E-ZPass will save you money. Since states are trying to get away from dealing with cash, they discount E-ZPass transactions. In Ohio the discount is 33%, Illinois 50%. West Virginia has new rules for 2019. First, they are raising their tolls from $2.00 to $4.00 at their three toll plazas. If you have a West Virginia E-ZPass, the charge is $2.60. They are the only state that does not discount E-ZPass transactions from other states’ transponders. How much does an E-ZPass cost? In Ohio, there is no base charge, just $.75/month. You need to keep at least $15 in your account. West Virginia charges an initial $13, with a three-year lease for $24, for a total of $37 for three years or about $1.03/ month. For example, I make several trips through West Virginia each year and will be paying a total of 20 tolls. Since a West Virginia E-ZPass will save $1.40 per toll, that’s a $28.00 saving. Bottom line: If your toll road riding includes West Virginia, you should purchase your E-ZPass from them. Taking advantage of this technology, you will put an end to fumbling with cash, waiting in long lines to pay, and in many cases avoid even entering a toll plaza or slowing down on toll roads. All while paying less. What are you waiting for? --------------------------------------------------------------------Connect with local Ohio Motorcycle Sport Touring Association riders at these monthly breakfasts:

The 2019 I-X Center Piston Powered Auto-Rama For anyone that’s ever complained that there’s never enough to see at a car or bike show, we once again present THE SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT I-X PISTON POWERED AUTO - RAMA. Yeah, it’s a mouthful – but this is a show worthy of such an insanely long name and Thunder Roads Ohio is proud to be a part of the show! The “Piston Power” Show is the largest indoor showcase of custom cars, trucks, antique construction equipment, motorcycles, tractors, planes, military equipment, and more of its kind in the entire WORLD! And yes – it’s right here in OHIO! The 2019 Piston Powered AutoRama will distribute more than 600 customized and themed trophies and more than $20,000 in cash prizes! The show will utilize the on-going sanctioning agreement with the ISCA and judge all motorcycles along with the presentation of the Duck Award trophy, which goes to a first-time shown bike and its $2,500 cash prize. The Best Bike in the show will be awarded with an engraved crystal trophy and $1,000 cash prize along with the Outstanding Bike winning $500. Additional plaques will be awarded for the Outstanding Bike Engine and Outstanding Bike Paint. Piston Power Show Trophies will be awarded by classes as judged by the ISCA. Thunder Roads People’s Choice Award presented by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys

What is the Duck Award?

2018 Duck Award winner

Beyond the technical form, fit, and finish of the bike there is a slightly less objective and tangible consideration for bikes at a show – and that is interest and excitement they generate from those attending the show. To this end, TRO will be polling those attending the show and asking them to select their favorite bike(s) at the show. From these votes, Thunder Roads Ohio will present the PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD – sponsored by Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys. In 2018, this award was received by Bill Schalk for his 2003 H-D Sportster.

Roy E. Schnabel was not a celebrity, but a person who loved motorcycles and their owners. He had the ability to bring a spark of life to those around him, just as he did to a freshly built motor. Known only as “Duck,” there were just a handful of people who knew him by his real name. Duck was a Vietnam Veteran who acquired his nickname doing Donald Duck impressions for friends and operated Duck’s Putter Parts. The duck paraphernalia adorned his motorcycle repair shop was a testimony to the name recognition that it gave him both personally and professionally. People came from across the country to have him repair their motorcycle engines and transmissions. Over a period of twelve years, Duck judged motorcycle entries at the Cleveland Auto-Rama. As a judge, he was impartial and fair. When Duck became a judge, the problems associated with awarding motorcycle trophies disappeared. Most of the entrants were entertained by Duck’s impersonations after the show closed, although very few people knew he was doing them. Roy’s life was snuffed out on October 2, 1988 when a drunk driver swerved left of center and collided with his motorcycle head on. The I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama continues to honor Roy E. “Duck” Schnabel with an ongoing award in his name. The Duck Award will be decided by the ISCA judging staff. This prestigious award will carry a cash award of $2,500 and will be given to the best motorcycle first-time shown that exhibits the most creative originality, design engineering and workmanship. American Scrambler: From Sportster to Dirtster in 48 Hours or Less by Drew Faulkner, MotoAdventurer.com / Thunder Roads Ohio Contributor

About five years ago, my buddy Jeff said he wanted to turn a Sportster into an adventure bike. With a look of abhorrence forming on my face, I said, “Why on earth would you want to ride a Harley off-road?” Fast forward a few years, after riding a Triumph Scrambler over every surface imaginable, meanwhile piling on enough miles to necessitate multiple valve checks each year, suddenly the idea of a pushrod engine started to sound like a good idea. I tapped my buddy Jeff on the shoulder and asked, “How serious are you about scrambling a Sporty?”

Why a Sportster

I love adventure riding, for a myriad of reasons (sounds like a follow-on article). With that, there’s no denying I like “adventure” motorcycles; with taller seats to see over traffic, upright seating position that’s more agreeable with my lower back, and long-travel suspension to suck up the bumps, there’s a lot to appreciate. That said, I still have beef with the modern adventure bike, mostly the price associated with all the extra crap I really don’t need. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all about heated grips and electronic cruise control. I welcome ABS, and I’ll tolerate traction control and throttle mapping. However, I really have no need for the whiz-bang TFT display and the subsequent techno-farkles that come with it. I can appreciate the “half fairing” and the tall windshield for burning down the highway, but honestly, that’s really not the kind of riding I enjoy. Enter the Sportster. Perhaps I was born a couple generations too late, but I put a hallmark on simplicity. With the addition of the Evolution engine in 1986, the Harley-Davidson Sportster has been mostly unchanged over the last three decades. Yes, engines have been fuel injected, rubber mounted, and various other minor improvements have been made, but it’s still the stone ax simple, forty-five-degree Milwaukee twin at the heart of the motorcycle. All of the previously mentioned electronic gizmos are awesome, I even own a few, but when the wheels leave the pavement, their importance is diminished. For a do it all machine, the Sportster with its Evolution engine has a lot of overlooked potential. In its modern slammed and chromed form, the unassuming Sportster is no dirt machine. You’ll find no argument here, again, it’s the engine, model longevity, and years of aftermarket support that makes the Sportster a logical platform for a garage built adventure machine. The Evo’s pushrod mill means that I just need to change oil and ride the snot out of it, repeat as necessary. With thirty years of service, there’s a myriad of parts available to transform a Sporty from a bar-hopper to a scrambling adventure machine. For years, many have jested about the agricultural nature of the HarleyDavidson engine. Certainly, I appreciate the advancements of dual-overheadcams and liquid cooling, however, I’m not looking for more horsepower in the dirt. I am, in fact, looking for a tractor. Regardless of modifications, a Sportster is still going to be a heavy “dirt bike”; I want stump pulling torque, not wound out, peaky engine character when I’m navigating a V-twin assault vehicle through the green-lanes. 34

Without pontificating about the current motorcycle sales trends, let’s just agree that the used market is strong. This is another logical reason to convert a Harley Sportster into a forest trail explorer. Used Sportsters can be found just about anywhere, for just about any price. It doesn’t hurt that many consider the Sportster an “entry-level” motorcycle, making available options that much more plentiful. Considering you’re no longer shopping based on “looks”, you can also save a few more bucks by buying a bike with only the critical components intact.

How Do You Scramble a Sportster? Certainly, my profuse affection for the aging Evolution engine isn’t sufficient to convince you a Sportster is an ideal off-road platform. Agreed, the oddly sized stock chrome rims are boat anchors, low slung pipes seem problematic, and the stubby rear shocks are, in a word, anemic. While not a direct comparison, let’s not forget the XR750 has been racing around dirt ovals for decades. Folks have been scrambling the “little” Harley for a long time, so this road map already exists. In my mind, the engine is the critical component, and with it the frame (despite its heft). Travel on the front forks isn’t exactly immense, but for “leisurely” overlanding, it will do. If the five inches of travel on my Triumph Scrambler has done this much, the Sportster’s front end can accomplish the same. Being a Harley, there are at least a dozen aftermarket solutions for upgrading the fork innards to handle a little extra abuse. Those rear shocks, however, are destined for the dumpster; again, akin to my Triumph, four to five inches of absorption will be necessary to handle the ill-maintained backcountry byways.

Wheels are another issue. While there are stock Sportsters fitted with nineteen or even twenty-one inch spoked front wheels, it’s that sixteen-inch rear wheel that makes tire selection so complicated. Fifteen and sixteen inch rear wheels are no big deal when shopping street tires, but when shopping for knobby skins for your adventure machine, I can count the available options on one hand. Depending on how aggressive you decide to go, you’re going to want a 17 or 18-inch rear hoop to mount suitable off-road rubber. The before mentioned pipes are potentially a problem. If you’re gingerly exploring the local forest service roads, any bike with any exhaust will do. If you plan on scrambling up jeep trails, along with the occasional log crossing, “high pipes” serve a purpose. Fortunately, this is another place where the Sportster shines, there’s absolutely no shortage of aftermarket exhaust options; considering the recent Scrambler craze, “high-pipes” can even be had for cheap. Suspension, wheels, and exhaust are the big ticket items that immediately come to mind. All of which have been done before, so it will simply be a matter of choosing the formula that offers the best performance without breaking the bank. After those pieces, it’s a matter of finding wide bars, pinning down a suitable seat, and deciding on a chain conversion or keeping the belt drive. While Jeff and I discussed the details of building this “Dirtster”, I came across an

THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

article on Revzilla Common Tread about a small company in Florida that was building kits to scramble Sportsters into the exact adventure machine we’d been discussing. Still in its infancy, I reached out to Hugo Moto for more details about the products they were offering. About two seconds later, Jeff told me a new (to him) Sportster followed him home. Quite a few pints were consumed at the local pub as Jeff and I scratched notes in a legal pad as we pored over the details of a possible build. After a few conference calls with the Hugo Moto guys, a box of parts arrived at Jeff’s garage in Cincinnati.

What’s in the Kit?

As I said, we weren’t the first to have this harebrained idea. There are countless builds documented on the Adventure Rider forums, along with a sea of scrambled Sportys to be found on any google search. Hugo Moto, however, took this idea and turned it into a series of bolt-on kits that builds a foundation to build your ultimate v-twin scrambler. Great minds think alike, as they say, Hugo Moto’s business model is focused on addressing the exact concerns I expressed above. For riders just dipping their toe into the scrambling adventure scene, the basic kit starts with a peg relocation kit, high pipes, and a skid plate. Riders that are looking to test their skills deeper in the woods will want to upgrade to the stage 2 scrambler kit to add upgraded suspension components: front fork cartridge emulators and OHIO’S OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

damper rods paired with upgraded shocks in the rear, plus a set of wide handlebars. Riders looking for the “Full Monty” will want to lean toward the HD2 Enduro kit, featuring longer travel premium suspension components, chain conversion kit, high fender mount, fork brace, enduro seat, and a set of knobby tires. In recent days they’ve also started to sell some of these components à la carte, namely the chain conversation and peg relocation kits. Jeff and I were bent on taking this Harley into the Kentucky backcountry, if not further, so for us, the long travel suspension and other premium bits were a must. Properly sized dirt wheels were also on tap, along with chain conversion, and the rest of the offroad staples.

Sportster to Dirtster in 48 hours

I had my mind about made up about attending the March Moto Madness rally before any talk of scrambling a Harley even started. When the possibility of meeting up with the Hugo Moto crew entered the conversation, that goal firmed up post-haste. Unfortunately, those before mentioned parts arrived at Jeff’s place just days before we needed to head south for the rally; the pressure was on. There’s no question, I get all twinkleeyed when I see the latest high-pipe scrambled motorcycle on the Bike EXIF feed, but the truth is, a lot of the stuff you find on the internet was put together by a custom builder with fabrication skills beyond many of us mortals. With that in mind, Hugo Moto put their scrambler package together as a “bolton” part replacement program. The front suspension, while intimidating, is easier than one might think. It is fair to say that the front forks are probably the most labor-intensive part of the install, but it’s doable for the layman with a little help from YouTube, or in my case, a buddy that’s rebuilt a lot of forks. In a similar fashion, Jeff had the correct size sockets to remove the giant nut holding on the front drive pulley. Even with those tools, a copious amount of PB blaster (and cuss words) were required to remove the front pulley from the countershaft for the chain conversion. With those two big ticket items out of the way, it was simply a matter of unbolting wheels, fenders, chain guards, pegs, and covers, replacing them with Hugo Moto parts 36

and associated hardware and fasteners included in the kit. I could easily go into intricate detail about the exhaustion of pizza, cigars, expletives, and a lot of beers, but for the sake of brevity, take my word for it that over the course of two late nights after work, Jeff and I successfully swapped all of the critical components to build a 460-pound V-twin dirt bike in two days. (Details pending on MotoAdventurer.com)

How is it Off-Road?

When riding a big bike successfully off-road, tire selection plays a big role. We chose the 21”/18” wheel setup to get a wider range of options, and then fitted them with Continental’s staple TKC80 for their respectable on-road/ off-road capability. Charging up the hill in Tennessee on the freshly minted Dirtster, the knobby shod 21” front wheel was a real game changer after having lived with a 19” front wheel on my Scrambler for so long. Plowing over rain ruts and babyhead rocks, the upgraded suspension handled a lot more punishment than I’m accustomed to on a big bike. Compared to my portly Scrambler, the Sporty is tall and narrow, letting it squeeze through places where the big 1200 bikes might struggle. The Sportster does carry its weight a little higher, especially with the longer suspension travel. Fortunately, the Milwaukee V-twin has torque for days so you can lug it like a tractor when you need to thread the needle around obstacles. Simplicity and reliability, of course, come at a cost. It’s a fine line between having

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

the tools and skill to hit obstacles at speed, while also having the suspension set where you can still get a foot down in a pinch. Saving a 500-pound adventure machine from a tip-over is typically a lost cause, “discretion is the better part of valor” as they say. At 460 pounds, the new Dirtster is far from light, but still well under the curb weight of virtually all the heavy-weight adventure bikes. That said, if you’re going to have heart burn about potentially scratching your Harley, riders cruising at lower altitudes would be wise to stick with the shorter travel suspension versus the Hugo Moto longtravel options. Needless to say, the rider has as much to do with it as the machine; I don’t have those skills, but I appreciate where the Dirtster can take me. Jason Smith however, President at Hugo Moto, does have the skills. One of the best parts of March Moto Madness is that they host a series of “field games”, from a trials course, to barrel races, to hill climb challenge. Jason entered their HD2 Enduro 1200 into the heavy-weight hill climb event on Sunday. Facing off against a series of other multi-cylinder bikes, including at least one certified BMW instructor, to the shock of many (myself included), it was the Harley that took the hill. In the end, if you’re looking for singletrack riding, a Harley Dirtster is no substitute for a dedicated single-cylinder woods weapon. However, if you’re looking to log long days in the saddle, where travel and experience are the OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE

goals, there’s little fear and turning down the next section of double-track you see. There’s nothing like putting together your own bike, and for the price of a used sporty and a few premium bits, your stone ax scrambler is sure to give those “beaked” ADV bikes a run for their money. Notes: I wrote this as an independent story that’s actually a follow on from my original story way back when (https://motoadventurer. com/2018/02/25/harleydirtster-project-planning/). I’m hoping to have a long version of “Stage 1 of the Dirtster Project” that includes more photos and video of the build up soon. The Sixties Are Over

For many of us, the Motorcycle Clubs of the fifties, sixties and seventies are things we hear and read about from those who came before us. Even for those of us still in clubs that have been around since then, the stories we hear recall images of thick 35mm black and white photos of Panheads, Knuckleheads, Shovelheads, old school bikers in rag tag clothes smelling of grease and oil, booze and smokes. If your club has that kind of history like mine does, these images, stories and the few relics left of those days gone by are treasures for your club. Having been born into an MC family, I know my old man has a war chest in his closet that I will take the responsibility of some day. It’s an old steamers trunk full of old news articles from runs in the 60s and 70s of big parties and LE raids on the club, and of his brothers lost too soon. There are some artifacts like old sets of colors, belt buckles and brass knuckles, etc. These are my family heirlooms. More valuable to me than a brick of gold! I think of the events I hear in the stories I’ve been told by old school brothers and my family. Some of the stories are quite colorful. I wonder sometimes if they had it easier or harder than we do today with respect to law enforcement. In this day and age, there are cameras EVERYWHERE, cell phones, and nosey citizens. 40

Add to that, prosecutors currently are ridiculous. It used to be some boys could have an old-fashioned fist to cuffs and no one got shot, no one went to the hospital most of the time, and if cops showed up, no one really cared. Oh, not these days. By God someone must PAY! The state or county is going to comb through every video they can find to make sure they get that good ole arrest and court date. I mean hell, they must pay their own salaries somehow right? It’s like putting the tiger in charge of the meat cooler isn’t it? They decide to charge people even if no victim files charges. So, they can keep that good old revenue stream pouring in. It is ludicrous. One must be ever vigilant when faced with a situation where a disagreement must be settled the

old-fashioned way. Yes, us clubs may have differences sometimes, but remember, even though the sixties are over, law enforcement and the American IN-justice system is still the hypocritical enemy in most cases, in my humble opinion. So, handle your business, but be wise to always be aware of your surroundings. Pops used to tell me, “sometimes we hated each other from one club to the next, but we ALL HATED law enforcement”. This was much the mentality of the major clubs from back in the day. Us versus them. Them being citizens and LE, not each other! My Road Name is Tabasco. Keep it Real! Tabasco.tro@gmail.com

BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT Choosing and Equipping Your First AR-15 Rifle by Greg Ellifritz, Buckeye Firearms In the last couple decades the gun industry has experienced periods of time when they couldn’t make enough weapons to keep up with customer demands. A lot of really smart folks think that a change in the balance of power in the Federal Government following an election is a trigger for panic buying. If legislators act quickly to pass more gun control regulations, lots of folks in this country will be in the market to buy AR-15 rifles. When that wave of panic buying starts up, your chance of getting your hands on a AR-15 rifle declines precipitously. My smarter readers will take heed and purchase anything they might need now while prices are low and dealers have a lot of guns in their inventories. Do you have an AR-15? If not, now is the best time to buy. You will regret not spending the money now when prices triple in the wake of any new gun control legislation being enacted. If you want to buy an AR-15 but aren’t really sure of what you need, this article will steer you in the right direction. One of the most common question I get from readers is “How do I choose the right AR-15 rifle?” The options are overwhelming to many new rifle shooters and lots of folks need some guidance. It really isn’t all that hard. Here are some tips to get you set up right and save you some money in the process. Brands If you want an AR-15 don’t buy the cheapest rifle you can find. The parted-out “Frankenguns” generally don’t hold up well. Expect to pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $800-$1200 for a high quality new AR-15. For an entry-level rifle, consider brands like Colt or Smith and Wesson. In my experience, the Colt and Smith and Wesson rifles tend to be the most reliable of the lower-priced AR-15s. Most Bushmaster, DPMS, and Rock River rifles also work well, but I see more problems with those rifles than the Colts or Smith and Wessons. Unless I was really strapped for cash, I would stay away from the lower priced “sport” versions of these rifles as well. They cut costs by eliminating dust covers and forward assists. Some also generally use cheaper internal parts as well. It’s worth it to pay a little extra money for a rifle that will last a lifetime. If you want to pay a little more to get the cream of the crop, I would suggest that you take a look at the rifles from Daniel Defense, BCM, and LMT. One other tip: buy new. Even though I buy lots of used guns, it’s best to buy your AR-15 as a new weapon. While it’s almost impossible to buy a pistol with a “shot out” barrel, The AR-15 barrel has a definite life expectancy. Rifles start showing serious accuracy loss somewhere between 10,000 and 20,000 rounds. You probably don’t know the round count on the rifle you are buying, so it’s safer just to buy new. 42 42

Caliber/Chamber Next, make sure you get a rifle that is chambered for 5.56mm rather than .223 Remington. While the two cartridges are dimensionally similar, they are not the same. The 5.56mm is loaded to a slightly higher velocity and pressure. It is also slightly dimensionally different. Because of this, a .223 Remington round can be safely fired in a 5.56mm rifle, but doing the opposite may be unsafe. Get the more versatile 5.56mm chamber. The newer .223 Wylde chamber safely accepts both cartridges. Barrels and Twist Rates I generally favor the shortest and lightest barrels I can find in my AR-15s. The long heavy barrels are useful for extended range bench rest and match shooting, but aren’t as practical for self defense. Get a rifle with a 14.5”-16” lightweight or M-4 profile barrel with a flash suppressor. Make sure NOT to get a muzzle brake instead of a flash suppressor. The muzzle brakes are designed to reduce muzzle rise on recoil but do so at the cost of dramatically increasing noise and muzzle blast. The muzzle rise isn’t enough of an issue with the 5.56mm rifle to warrant their use. If you ever have to shoot the rifle indoors or in a vehicle without hearing protection, you’ll be glad you got the flash hider instead. The twist rate determines which bullet performs best in the rifle. If you want to shoot longer/ heavier bullets, you’ll want a fast twist rate (1:7).

If you shoot shorter/lighter bullets (55 grain or less), a slower twist rate is better. In general the 1:8 twist or the 1:9 twist rates will work well for a broad variety of projectiles. Get a lined barrel as well. Either the chrome lining or the newer Melonite or Nitride coatings will add life to your barrel as compared to the unlined/uncoated versions. The lining will give you 5,000 + extra rounds fired before you start experiencing accuracy degradation. Flat Top or Carry Handle? I prefer a rifle with a flat top so that I can mount a red dot optic or scope. It is very difficult to mount an optic reliably atop a carry handle. Another option is to get a rifle with a removable carry handle (often called the A-3 model). The removable carry handle has sights, but can be removed if you want to later install an optic like a red dot sight or scope. The A-3 models give you the ability to do use open sights or optics. If you absolutely know that you are going to be using an optic (especially a magnified scope) get a rifle with a folding front sight so that it doesn’t get in the way when you look through the scope. Removing the front sight tower and replacing it with a different gas block will often negatively affect rifle reliability. Get the rifle with the folding front sight from the start if that’s what you want. Red Dot Optics You will shoot much faster with a red dot optic than you will with open sights. With current red dots having battery life of more than two years (constantly on), dying batteries aren’t much of an issue anymore. The two big name red dots are the Aimpoint and the EOTech. While I like the recticle of the EOTech better than the Aimpoint (and use one on my duty rifle), I see more reliability problems with the EOTech than I do with the Aimpoint. I think the best value in red dot sights right now

Our family of highly effective pro-gun organizations includes Buckeye Firearms Association, Buckeye Firearms Foundation, and Buckeye Firearms Association PAC. Buckeye Firearms Association (BFA) is a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization that serves as the flagship of our grassroots efforts to defend and advance the right of citizens to own and use firearms for all legal activities, including self-defense, hunting, competition, and recreation. BFA works to pass pro-gun legislation, educate the public through ongoing media relations, provide high-quality firearm classes, and make available a wide variety of resources for gun owners. While anti-gun groups get their funding and support from wealthy activists or big corporations, BFA gets its funding and support from citizens like you who value their Constitutional rights. www.buckeyefirearms.org

is the Aimpoint Pro. It has excellent battery life and comes with an included mount for a little more than $400. I have several rifles equipped with this optic. It’s really hard to beat. If you want a smaller or lighter red dot, I would recommend the Aimpoint T1 or H1. They are very similar in performance, but the H1 is about $100 cheaper. You lose a little waterproofing and some night vision settings in exchange for cost savings. They are both excellent sights. If you don’t want to spend $400-$700 on a red dot, there are a couple of cheaper options. While these don’t have the durability of the optics I listed above, they will generally prove adequate for casual use. Check out the Primary Arms MicroDot or the Vortex Sparc. If you have a red dot, you will also need backup iron sights just in case the red dot is damaged or fails. There are lots of options here. Pick what looks good for you. I generally use Magpul’s sights, but they certainly aren’t the most durable on the market. Magnified Optics One of the current trends among knowledgeable shooters is to replace their red dot with a variable power magnified scope. These scopes are generally in the neighborhood of 1x-6x in power. At close range they can be dialed down and used like a red dot, but they give you extra magnification at long range. I think these are especially useful if you find yourself taking frequent 100-300 meter shots. Otherwise, I prefer the red dot for better speed. A cost effective, but high quality variablepowered optic is the Leupold. A cheaper option that has served me well is the Millet DMS. One other lower price scope to consider is the Vortex Strike Eagle.

US Optics, Kahles, and Nightforce make higher end scopes that some of you may enjoy. Triggers The factory trigger will serve most people well. There are a few options if you want to decrease trigger pull weight. Avoid competition triggers that have screw adjustments. You don’t want the screws backing out on you at a bad time. The only aftermarket trigger I use in my AR-15 rifles is the Geissle. It’s worth the money. Accessories You’ll want attachment points for lights, optics and slings. You can buy a rifle with a factory supplied railed forend. If you want an aftermarket forend with multiple attachment points, the Magpul is cheap, lightweight, and durable. There are lots of other rails available. Lots of companies build rifles that come with KeyMod or MLock forends You will also want a collapsible stock to allow different sized shooters to comfortably shoot the rifle. The one I use on my duty rifle is the B-5 SOPMOD. No matter which rifle you buy, don’t load it up with extraneous equipment. There are just a few useful accessories that need to go on a rifle. The first necessity is a sling. Stay away

from the single point or triple point slings. A simple two point sling will work best for most users. I like the slings by Viking Tactics and Blue Force Gear, but even a simple military carry strap will work fine. You will also want a light on your rifle. There are many good options ranging from $50-$500. Pick the one you like. My favorites are the Surefire mini-scoutlight and the Surefire X300. Beyond slings and lights, you will want plenty of extra magazines. Get at least 10. High capacity magazines have been the target of legislators in the past. They were restricted so that civilians couldn’t purchase newly manufactured magazines from 1994-2004. During that time frame, magazines that today cost $10-$15 rose in price to over $100. Buy your magazines now before they are too expensive! I use P-Mags or the aluminum mags from Brownells. This should get you started with a very serviceable AR-15 rifle. If you follow my advice, you’ll be better equipped than 90% of the users of defensive AR-15 rifles in the USA. Start here, evaluate your gear and add only what’s necessary for your individual mission. RECIPES

I love to make this soup with pre-made meatballs, less work, less mess, less to wash. It tastes amazing and works well for a low carb diet if you leave out the pasta and bread. (I just add more spinach to make it more filling) Double the recipe to feed a crowd - its always a hit!

Cheesy Broccoli Ham Bake Serves 4 (or 2 hungry bikers) 3 cups frozen chopped broccoli 1/4 cup chopped onion ... 1 tsp garlic, minced 6 tbsp butter, divided 2 tbsp flour 2-1/4 cups milk 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese 2 cups cubed cooked ham 2 ½ cups garlic stuffing cubes, divided 1 cup additional cheddar cheese for top

Cheater Italian Wedding Soup Serve 4-6 (or 3 hungry bikers) 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp butter 1 onion, diced small 1 cup finely diced carrots 1 cup finely diced celery 32 oz Low Sodium Chicken Stock (more as need) 64 oz bag frozen meatballs, thawed 5-10 oz baby spinach, roughly chopped 1 tbsp dried Italian seasoning 1 tbsp pesto (or just minced basil) ½ tsp ground black pepper Salt to taste Optional: 1 cup small pasta (Orzo, Acini di pepe, Israeli couscous, etc)** Parmesan cheese for topping

Cook broccoli according to package directions, drain and set aside In a large saucepan melt 2 tbsp butter and sauté onion until tender. Stir in garlic and cook another minute. Add in flour and stir until blended, then gradually add milk. Bring to a boil and cook for 2 minutes stirring constantly until thickened. Reduce heat; stir in cheese until melted. Add broccoli, ham and 1 cup stuffing mix to cheese sauce. Transfer to a greased baking dish. Melt remaining butter and toss with remaining stuffing mix. Sprinkle over the top of the casserole, then sprinkle remaining cheese over croutons Bake uncovered at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown.

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

This can be made in a crock pot, stove top or insta-pot. In a large pot (or insta-pot) melt the butter in with the olive oil Over a med-high heat, sauté the onion, carrots and celery until a bit soft Pour in the chicken stock and loosen any brown bits off the bottom Cut each meatball into 4 or 8 pieces then add to pot and bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes to warm meat through **If you want to add pasta, add it now and allow to boil for 5 minutes then reduce to a simmer Add in spinach, Italian seasonings, pesto and pepper then allow to slowly cook for about 20 minutes Check for level of salt and add as needed – please note many frozen meatballs are salty and will release salt during cooking, that’s why I salt last. Serve with a nice handful of parmesan on top and a biscuit or French bread.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND

Irish Priest An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut. The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest’s breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, “Sir, have you been drinking?” “Just water,” says the priest. The trooper says, “Then why do I smell wine?” The priest looks at the bottle and says, “Good Lord! He’s done it again!” St Patrick’s Day Pick Up Lines “If you don’t sleep with me, the leprechauns have already won.” “How’d you like to help put the Irish Spring back into me shillelagh?” “Gurl, I will sham rock your world.” “Well, lass, we’re the only ones still standing. How about it?”

Here’s a recipe for St. Patrick’s Day Irish stew: • • •

Get some meat, some potatoes, onions, peas, spinach and a lot of Guinness. Drink all of the beer. Forget about the stew.

James said to his friend Daniel, “I know a girl who married an Irishman on St. Patrick’s Day.” Daniel said, “Oh really?” James said, “No, O’Reilly.”

“Lassie, it’s your ancestral duty to drive the snake out of my pants!”

Q: Why do people wear shamrocks on St. Patrick’s Day? A: Regular rocks are too heavy.

“You’ve already had six Guinness draughts? Brilliant!”

Q: What do you call a leprechaun who gets sent to jail? A: A lepre-con!

Dear Abby, i’m really worried i’ve been afraid my wife has been fooling around on me. so i hid behind the shop the other night when i saw her getting out of some one else’s truck buttoning her shirt. i squatted down behind my bike as she pulled her panties out of her purse and put them on. as i hid behind my bike i noticed the swing arm was cracked do you think i can weld it or do i need to replace it??
