Throckley Primary School PE – Intent, Implementation and Impact Intent At Throckley Primary School, we believe Sport & PE play an important role in making our vision statement a reality for every pupil, with the potential to change young people’s lives for the better. We believe a high-quality, inclusive physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to enjoy, succeed and excel in both competitive and non-competitive sport as well as harbouring a thirst for fitness for life. We ensure we provide a safe and supportive environment for children to enjoy opportunities to become physically confident in a way which supports their health (both physical and mental) and fitness. We enable our children to compete in sport and other activities to build character and help to embed our school values such as teamwork and respect that they can use in their everyday life. Underpinning the curriculum at Throckley Primary School are our curriculum drivers which are: Aspiring to achieve- Children at Throckley Primary School are taught from the very start of their education the importance of practising a healthy, active lifestyle and that anyone can be successful in PE if we show great effort, determination, resilience and sportsmanship. Our children understand that the knowledge and skills they acquire through our PE curriculum can lead to their future success. Broadening horizons- Through consistent verbal feedback and discussion around this, pupils understand that their choices allow them to become the best they can be and directly impacts their own life as it increases the opportunities which will be available to them and broadens their horizons. This is turn, allows children to develop a good overall awareness of their place in the world. Understanding our place in the world- Carefully chosen key sporting icons (both local and from across the globe) are woven through our long-term plan with each year group being assigned a particular sportsperson. Each of these sporting heroes have been chosen as they have helped to break down sporting 'barriers' and show that everyone has the opportunity to participate in, enjoy and succeed at the highest level. We encourage our children to have the confidence that they can, one day, follow in these famous footsteps to broaden their horizons and consider their influence beyond Throckley. Within our physical education curriculum, we aim to provoke curiosity through the use of enquiry-based learning to help deepen children’s understanding of the world around them and provide them with transferable skills (through our O.W.Ls) that can be used across the curriculum and outside of school. Children learn to be self-mangers, team workers, independent enquirers, effective participants, creative thinkers and reflective learners. We, in-line with the national curriculum for physical education, aim to ensure that all pupils: · · · ·
Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities Are physically active for sustained periods of time Engage in competitive sports and activities Lead healthy, active lives.
