George Stephenson invented the first steam locomotive called the Rocket. He also helped to build the first public railway: the Stockton to Darlington railroad. The steam train changed the way people and goods were transported The steam train made it possible for people who lived in urban places (cities), even the poorer people, to travel to rural places (the seaside).
