THRIVE

The power of Photoshop is immense! Miss the annual family portrait? No problem— abracadabra...click, click, click and you’re popped right in. Didn’t lose those 20 extra pounds before the shoot date? No worries, zip-zap, instant diet. But just like all good super-powers, our magic wand of digital manipulation comes with great responsibilities… so while we may add a little contrast or enhance some color to make an image pop, what you see here in Thrive is as true to life as we can keep it. That is except on that pesky Spot the Difference where we let our powers shine issue #97 | June 2017 | w w w.thrivedec atur.com

in full force… ever wonder HOW in the heck we did it?!? We know <evil laugh>! Photo editing for the majority of our stories boils down to photo selection (choosing a dynamic image that tells the story and creates a unique layout in the magazine) and basic editing to enhance reality without effectively changing it. The biggest liberties we take with images are with those things we deem distracting… say we’ve featured an event in Central Park yet a big blue 2-hour parking sign is quite ominously hovering above. Well, POP—Photoshop magic, and it’s GONE. Don’t get your hopes up for full day parking downtown if we’ve fooled you. It’s just a bit of digital fairy dust.

Chill on the Hill This Summer For another summer, all the cool cats will be gathering in Mt. Zion. Starting June 1 and for the next seven consecutive Thursdays, there will be no shortage of entertainment in Fletcher Park. This year’s Chill on the Hill has snagged nationally known musical acts for your listening enjoyment. “We were recently voted 2nd best outdoor event in the region according to a Reader’s Choice poll,” says Kelly McCourtEdwards, Manager of the Mt. Zion Convention Center and the Village’s Event Coordinator, “…as well as 2nd best band or live music event.” Chill on the Hill was the co-brainchild of Kelly’s daughter, who asked her mom, “Wouldn’t it be cool if there could be concerts here [in Mt. Zion] every week?” A few calls and some brainstorming brought the idea to life; in fact, it quickly took on a life of its own. “People from Peoria, Chicago, St. Louis and other places approach me and say that they consider the Chill on the Hill to be the true kickoff to their summers, and to me that is a real honor,” says Kelly. The group uses no taxpayer dollars to fund the festivals, instead recruiting sponsors and volunteers. “When we were first starting out, the lineup was mostly local acts, but as you will see in the lineup for this year we have recruited from a pool of nationally known artists,” she says. Thursday was an intentional choice as well, providing a late-week respite for families and single parents. “Thursday is looked forward to by several weekday workers who may have other weekend engagements with their children or families, so a midweek music fest is unique,” says Kelly. “Also, we see lots of people come on

their own, that is, with no other family; they will just plop down a lawn chair sometimes next to strangers and come out with a new friend or acquaintance.” For the finale this year, the wildly popular Lick Creek Band will be sponsored by Bob Swartz of BKD Advisors in a special concert benefiting local youngster Jackson Scharf. One dollar of each ticket sold from this finale concert will go to the Jackson Scharf Family Fund to help defray medical costs for Jackson, who was diagnosed with Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) and collapsed with a brain hemorrhage in September 2016. The event will cap an exciting year for the festival, now in its fourth year. “We have an exciting year lined up for 2017 sponsored in part by Neuhoff Media (who will have on-air personalities on the scene) as well as Thrive,” says Kelly. “I am really looking forward to a fourth year! With new logos, new images, new acts and a new opportunity to make this into a defining summertime piece— you really have to change things up to ensure success.”

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Jones Boys Market With summer on the brain, the Dude hit up “the Boys with the Brats” for a brat-tasting cookout to be remembered. Always up for a party, I invited a few friends over, fired up the grill and tickled some tastebuds to try out some of Jones Boys Market’s best sellers. These regional favorites technically originate out of Ashland, but they first tempted me at Richland’s summer Saturday Produce Market. They’ve also got steaks, ribs and all other manner of meat, but their brats are simply the best! Read on, and get your buns ready! Apple – sweet and full of flavor, a great pairing of sweet and spice, easy to see why it’s a signature. Pair with applesauce, barbeque sauce for a little tang English Bangers – classic breakfast sausage. Pair with waffles, eggs, bacon, the works Habanero – wow! If you like spice, you’ll love this! Not an immediate heat; takes a minute to fire up. Pair with milk or ice cold beer Ham & Pineapple – tastes like a traditional ham dinner, sweet and almost syrupy in flavor. Pair with scalloped potatoes, pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese Horseradish – distinct horseradish flavor without the burn. Even people who don’t like horseradish will like it. Pair with real horseradish, a little steak sauce for a kick 10 | June 2017

Hungarian Kolbasz – traditional Hungarian sausage with a little pow from paprika, good and spicy but not too hot. Pair with deviled eggs, macaroni salad Mozzarella & Garlic – great smoked flavor, mozzarella forward, slight garlic. Pair with picnic foods like potato salad and chips Root Beer – a definitive, uniquely sweet aftertaste. Pair with ice cream, root beer Steakhouse – tastes like Mama’s home cookin’, think meatballs and meatloaf. Pair with mashed potatoes, corn, macaroni & cheese – the comfort foods Sweet Italian – classic Italian flavor with good, strong garlic taste plus some sage, oregano and other herbs. Pair with pasta salad, macaroni salad GET THERE: Jones Boys Market Richland Community College’s Saturday Produce Market Under the wind turbine in the National Sequestration Education Center's parking lot Find them on Facebook

WILDCARD

Jump into Water Sports with Decatur’s Own SKI Klub Last summer, Lake Decatur saw the addition of paddleboard, kayak and pedal boat rentals thanks to Standing Paddle Co. and Macon Waves Pedal Boat Rentals. However, the SKI Klub of Decatur, established in 1960, has been teaching members and non-members to water ski on the lake for over 55 years. Some of these members have even gone on to ski collegiately or professionally. Christina Baker, acting SKI Klub secretary and eight-year active member, says the private club counts 43 families as members and can proudly say some memberships include multiple generations. “Having been established for 57 years, past and present members alike can agree that the SKI Klub and Lake Decatur are two extremely important assets to our community,” she says. “We provide recreation along with a safe and responsible environment to hone your water sporting skills.” The boating season (May through September) is obviously the SKI Klub’s busiest time, but it also holds other events throughout the year, such as an Easter Egg Hunt that kicked off the 2017 season. In May, the Klub hosted a Memorial Day cookout, and future events will include a Fourth of July celebration, Labor Day cookout and a scavenger hunt and Trick or Treating event in October. Additionally, the SKI Klub, known for being involved within the community, plans to act as a stop for the Annual Decatur Celebration Boat Poker Run, a fundraising event for the Decatur Celebration. Members will also serve as safety spotters during the Decatur Lakeside Triathlon slated for July 9 to 10.

Members meet monthly, even during the winter. Throughout the summer, you’ll find them out on Lake Decatur, utilizing the docks, ramps and jumps, all of which are owned by the club and not accessible to non-members. They also own and maintain a slalom course, but it is available for public access. The equipment is installed in the beginning of May and removed in early October by club members. “Often members will join without owning a boat but for the fellowship and property access,” explains Christina. “Some of our members have been skiing for over 50 years, while others are brand new to its thrill and excitement.” Indeed, individuals of all experience levels can apply to become a member. Christina says those interested in water skiing, boating and engaging in social activities with like-minded water sport enthusiasts are encouraged to inquire about a SKI Klub membership via email at ski.decatur@ gmail.com. The club’s acting executive board is always happy to take questions and discuss potential membership. Another way the club has increased its membership over the years is by offering friends of members a weekend to explore, boat and ski. They enjoy temporary access to the club’s jumps, ramps and docks. “You will often find families teaching their 'old tricks' to the younger members," Christina says, “and groups of friends and family coming together for skiing and boating fun.” GET THERE: SKI Klub of Illinois The cost of an annual membership to the SKI Klub is $125, with an initiation cost of $100. www.facebook.com/Ski-Klub-ofIllinois-161048223921498

Take Yourself Out to the Decatur Commodores Photos by Sarah Jane Written by Caitlin Cannon

Decatur’s own Field of Dreams plays out at Sunnyside Park every summer, so grab your popcorn and peanuts and take yourself out to the ballgame. The Decatur Commodores will host its home opener at Decatur’s own Sunnyside Park with the annual Sunnyside Invitation Tournament, running Wednesday, June 14, to Saturday, June 17. Don’t miss your chance to see the area’s best college and potentially big league prospects stretch a double into a triple and flop face-first into third and wrap their arms around the bag, a la the cinema classic Field of Dreams. Roughly 60 to 80 baseball players have tried out for the 2017 Decatur Commodores Baseball Association’s 16U and 18U teams in hopes of making their baseball aspirations

fun to watch and a high level of competition, all with free admission. One note: Parking is limited; if you’re coming as a group, travel together and carpool.

The Commodores originated in fall 2008, and their first season of play began in summer 2009. None of the board members had children on the teams; they just had a love for America’s past time and wanted to provide their expertise in instruction and coaching to those players who want to reach the highest level of playing. Board member and former Major League Baseball professional player Kevin Koslofski says one of the goals is to help young men who want to play college baseball have an opportunity to play in front of college recruiters.

The Commodores’ home field at Sunnyside Park has become a baseball destination after undergoing major renovations over the past three years. “We partnered with the Decatur Park District, Millikin University and the Andreas Foundation,” says Kevin. “Everyone has chipped in to help renovate Sunnyside Park on the West End.” The park has been there for years, and everything you see is new within the last three years—new press box, dugouts, irrigation system, scoreboard, batting cages and bullpens. Let's Get Wet!

Lake Decatur Makes a Splash in Your Summer By Caroline Colby Bruder

Wondering the best way to get on the water? Lake Decatur’s activity options abound – how will you make waves?

Boating

Boat Clubbing

If your favorite way to enjoy the water is on a boat, Lake Decatur is the perfect place to do it! Decatur offers four public boat ramps, located in Nelson Park at the corner of Lost Bridge Road and Greenlake Drive, at Country Club Road across from the Country Club of Decatur, and on Fairies Parkway. It’s easy to register your watercraft: Take your boat’s paperwork to the second floor of the Civic Center, get registered, pay a fee (depending on the size of the engine) then go to the Lake Office at Nelson Park to have your watercraft inspected and receive your license. (Inspections are performed once every two years, and licenses must be renewed annually.)

Pat Leckrone, Commodore of the Dolphin Boat Club, encourages the public to consider using a boat club if they own a boat. The main benefit of a membership is the ability to leave your boat docked on the lake during boating season, “which beats hauling it on a trailer,” he says. The Dolphin Boat Club charges $350 per year for membership, which pays for a boat slip, fees and part of the club’s social activities, which include cookouts and pizza nights. Dolphin Boat Club is located in Nelson Park, right next to the Lake Office. Find out more at www.facebook.com/dolphinboatclub.

Sailing If you prefer a more serene exploration, set your course for Commodore Decatur Yacht Club. Greg Ferguson, the club’s Commodore (i.e. head guy in charge) oversees the club and its approximately 100 members. For those interested in learning, the club offers sailing lessons every Saturday at 10 am in Chandler Park. Interested participants join the club as associate members for an annual fee of $75. An instructor will teach you all the basics of sailing, from tying knots to identifying the jib (i.e. the front sail). Greg says it usually takes about six lessons to become proficient in sailing, and after that, members become certified sailors and can take out one of the club’s sailboats for a spin. Fishing If you’re looking for a more relaxing way to use the lake, Joann Lowe, proprietor of Mike’s Tackle World, suggests fishing. Lake Decatur is stocked with bluegill, walleye, bass, catfish and much more. Mike’s Tackle World carries all the fishing equipment you need, from hooks to licenses. How much will a fishing license run you? For the 16-and-under crowd, fishing is free. From ages 17 to 64, you pay $15 per year. After that, the price drops. For more information on fishing regulations, check out ifishillinois.org, then search for Lake Decatur.

Dining Macon County has taken waterfront dining up a notch courtesy of the Beach House, situated along the shores of Lake Decatur. Enjoy a bite on the outdoor patio with a waterfront view, or opt for a quiet dinner inside their stonewalled dining room. Favorites include seafood, steaks, flatbread and their legendary four-cheese cavatappi. Or try their new 2301 Oyster Bar for oysters shucked to order (call for times). Stop in at 2301 Lake Shore Drive, Decatur.

Stand Up Paddleboarding & Kayaking Hit the water for the hottest outdoor sport on the water: stand up paddleboarding (SUP). Standing Paddle Co. brings the sport to Lake Decatur from May through midOctober weather permitting, and they’ve added the bonus option of kayaking too. Ages 8 and up can hit the water; $15 per half hour for SUP, $10 per half hour for kayaks (one hour, half day and full day rentals also available). Find them at the Snack Shack in Decatur’s Nelson Park. Need more info? Visit standingpaddleco.com or find them on Facebook.

Pedal Boating Want to see a dolphin on Lake Decatur? Your best shot is to hit up Macon Waves Pedal Boat Rentals, where you can pilot a Sun Dolphin Sun Slider pedal boat along the shores. The season opens Memorial Day weekend, and they’re open Saturdays and Sundays from 12 to 7 pm. Cost is $12 per half hour or $15 per hour. Life jackets are provided and are mandatory. Find them just steps away from the Beach House restaurant, and watch Facebook for service and hours updates.

These are all just a few stops on the way to the Park District’s grand vision of making the entire Lakeshore Landing a premier regional destination. Recent developments include Scovill Sculpture Park, a rotating art installation overlooking the lake between Scovill Zoo and the Children’s Museum of Illinois. Overlook Adventure Park features two mini golf courses and the area’s only high ropes adventure course and tots ropes course, plus restaurants including Ted’s Taters and Cherry Berry frozen yogurt. Batting cages are currently under construction, and future plans call for a deluxe playground and a water park in 2018. See more ideas at lakeshorelanding.org. For more lake events information, check out the bulletin board in Nelson Park outside the Lake Office, or visit the City of Decatur’s website, under the “Water Management” tab. However you choose to hit the water, Lake Decatur makes a splash in any summer plans!

Caroline Colby Bruder is a freelance writer and Millikin alumnae who recently returned to Decatur and is looking forward to getting her feet wet again in a Central Illinois summer again. 30 | June 2017

THRIVE Q&A

We love to grill and chill as much as the next, and we’re into finding new flavors. So when we heard Baby TALK is mixing things up for their annual Grillin in the Garden event, inviting a new group of home brewers to pair the perfect pints, we were all ears. We asked Jimmy Misner, part of the Full Volume Homebrew Crew who’ll be sharing their craft, to give us the inside track.

FAVORITE THING TO DO IN SUMMER IN MACON COUNTY

As a family we like making Saturday trips to the farmer’s markets in search of fresh, and maybe new, ingredients to try out both in cooking and brewing. It’s also a great spot to pick out fresh flowers for our daughters. As an individual I really enjoy brewing on a Friday or Saturday night. It doesn’t matter how late it gets, I can enjoy the process on my own terms, in my own time.

YOUR PERFECT DATE NIGHT IN MACON COUNTY

Having three daughters, the Decatur Park District’s Daddy Daughter Dance is an annual date night for me and my little girls. As for my wife and me, grabbing a bite to eat on the patio of Donnie’s Homespun followed by some live music, good beer and a lot of laughter is our kind of quality time.

JIMMY MISNER

FAVORITE PLACE TO ENJOY A COLD ONE IN MACON COUNTY

Decatur Brew Works has the best selection of craft beers; plus Micah and Dreux are always up for great conversation. We find ourselves there as a family (our kids love their popcorn and darts) or for a good beer to end the night.

FAVORITE LOCAL BEER(S) IN MACON COUNTY

My favorites are enjoyed at our monthly Full Volume Homebrew Club (FVHBC) meeting. We sample some of the most interesting and unique beers around. The members of this group come up with interesting twists on beer styles and improve on versions of those that already exist.

WHAT’S FULL VOLUME HOMEBREW CLUB ALL ABOUT?

Our mission is to continue our education and understanding of what craft beer is in the pursuit of making the best beer possible. This is done through monthly meetings that incorporate educational presentations and plenty of sampling. We welcome everyone – homebrewers or not – to join (find us on facebook) and learn more about craft beer and brewing.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR CLUB AT GRILLIN' IN THE GARDEN

Several FVHBC members will be on site serving eight to 10 different homebrewed beers. There will be something for everyone to try like a watermelon gose, coffee stout, new England IPA and more. These guys are knowledgeable and readily willing to answer any and all questions related to beer. They come from all walks of life and have interesting stories to share.

WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR IN THE CRAFT BREW WORLD FOR MACON COUNTY

Personally, I’m excited about joining a new craft brewery project that will be opening up later this year - Door 4 Brewing Company in Decatur. Our taproom plan is to serve only our beer as well as distribute it to local restaurants and bars. Stay tuned for more!
