A look back at last month’s happenings
Great Russian Nutcracker The Moscow Ballet’s “Great Russian Nutcracker” ushered in the holiday season with two performances at Kirkland Fine Arts Center in November. Forty professional dancers were joined on stage by over 100 young dancers from the community and a local children’s choir. Kirkland's performances also included full musical accompaniment by the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra and was the only stop on the Moscow Ballet tour that included a live orchestra.
First Friday Gallery Walk
Four downtown art galleries opened their doors for a variety of arts and enthusiasts on November 3. Featured artists at Blue Connection were Lea Cameron and THRIVE contributor Sydney Doherty. Live music and Love of Nature by Kellie Rae Theiss filled the Anne Lloyd Gallery next door.

Timbuktu Saloon The NATU Band performed home-grown original music and a mix of crowd pleasing country, classic rock, and Top 40 hits at their show at Timbuktu in November and kept music fans on the dance floor moving all night long.
Fireside Relics The Winery hosted the Fireside Relics, a Springfield-based band that draws from 70's rock and 90's grunge with a modern twist to form its own sound. The band has earned a reputation as a genre-blending band able to comfortably mix elements of rock, blues, jazz, folk, and alternative rock with interesting lyrical directions to make truly original sounding music.
Night In The Islands The Decatur Club hosted Big Brothers, Big Sisters annual Night In The Islands fundraiser. Guests purchased a "boarding pass" that awarded them an opportunity to win one of ten great get-aways, including a trip to the Dominican Republic.

Kids get in on Christmas; you get new ink! ‘Twas the morning before WAND’s toy drive, when Oakwood Tattoo came alive as patrons lined up with pride each with a present totaling at least twenty-five… On Thursday, November 30, for 12 hours only, Oakwood Tattoo will be hosting its 3rd annual Toys for Tats event. “This year we aim to have 15 tattooists and raise $10,000 in toys,” says Shop Manager Holly Harrison. “We always try and give back to the community just because the community has helped us so much.” The tattooing festivities begin at 10 am and will be given on a first-come, first-served basis. To be a recipient of a tattoo, you must bring a present that is valued at a minimum of $25, still in its wrapping, along with your proof of purchase— aka the receipt. Then you choose from 20 palmsized traditional tattoo designs originally valued at $150 or more. Most tattoos will be holidaythemed, but the selection will also include some that don’t revolve around Christmas. Next up on your tattoo to-do list is whether you want the design to be colored or black and gray, and if you want the tattoo to go on your arm or your leg. The event wraps up at 10 pm, and as much as the Oakwood team wants to, they’re not able to get everyone in. So be sure to get there sooner rather than later if you’re wanting to give a gift for a tattoo. At the end of the day, the Oakwood Tattoo team loads up the toys for a quick ride to WAND’s Spirit of Giving Toy Drive, which distributes the toys to children in need throughout Macon County.
“This event really attracts a lot of people because anyone who has 25 bucks can get a tattoo,” says Holly. “We are hoping that we will be able to do more tattoos than we have done in previous years. 10 grand is a really high goal, but I think we can do it. I really, really believe we can!”

HOW DOES SHOP WITH A COP WORK?

How would you feel if your heroes took you shopping? Each year Macon County kids get to find out firsthand during the Decatur Police Benevolent and Protective Association’s two Shop with a Cop programs, one in August for back to school and one in December for Christmas. What’s it like to play Santa for a day? We asked the Decatur Police Department’s Sergeant Scott Rosenbery, who is also president of the Decatur Police Benevolent and Protective Association (PB&PA) Unit #39, and tapped him for great ideas on how to give the gift of activity in Macon County.

The Decatur PB&PA, which is comprised of active and retired Decatur police officers, aims to take 100 children shopping for each program. Each child also receives breakfast. Kids are selected from the Decatur Public School District, Youth Advocate, Old Kings Orchard Community Center and Boys & Girls Club of Decatur based on need. Each child is allowed to spend $100 in the store. The Christmas event takes place at Target. It allows the kids to shop for Christmas gifts, and they usually purchase clothes and toys. Target will wrap the toys/clothing for the kids so they have something to open on Christmas Day.

After participating in my first Shop with a Cop in 2006, I realized how important it was for law enforcement to build relationships with the youth in this community and help those families in need.

The best part is seeing the smiling faces after the children get done shopping and knowing they will have gifts to open on Christmas morning.

The children participating will often ask the officer if he/ she can get something for a sibling that was not able to participate in the program.

Since incorporating a second Shop with a Cop program, the Decatur PB&PA Unit #39 spends almost $18,000 per year on children in Macon County. Approximately 100 children get to participate in each Shop with a Cop program.
