YMCA Soccer Going Home to Borg Warner Soccer is the most popular sport on Earth. Until lately, soccer’s interest stateside had not reached the levels of fandom it had reached internationally. In recent years, though, soccer’s popularity in the USA has soared to new heights. With its popularity growing, the Decatur Family YMCA saw a great opportunity to have its own home field by returning to the original location at Borg Warner Field. The Sports Director for our local YMCA, Kaytlynd Spangler, says, “The move to Borg Warner is more than finding a soccer complex but really elevating the way soccer is perceived in the community.” All volunteer coaches now go through trainings, and all are Y USA Soccer Coach certified, too. She believes “Borg Warner is a great home base for the kids to know where Y soccer is.” Another exciting development is occurring within YMCA and Decatur Public Schools. This spring season, the Y and DPS are collaborating to bring a soccer program to elementary schools within the DPS District. The Y’s soccer program will be able to reach more children and give everyone an opportunity to play. Kaytlynd says the Y’s goals are to “strengthen Decatur sports. Soccer participation at DPS has dwindled at the high school level. This is a big reason why the Y wants to come in.” Through this venture, “Classmates will become teammates, and teammates will turn into family,” which will bring overall unity to the soccer program and a resurgence in all athletic programs by keeping classmates together. The cost of playing any sport can be substantial, and not every parent is able to afford to pay. Kaytlynd says, “Children bring home a flyer from school filled with activities. Parents see the price and that is the end of the conversation. Here at the Y, there is never a closed door, whether you are a member or a non-member.” Financial assistance is readily available, and scholarships 08 | February 2017

are provided based on income. You can essentially come in and be approved on the spot. By investing in Borg Warner and upgrading its soccer program, as well as collaborating with Decatur Public Schools, the YMCA is committed to do what is best for the Decatur community.

You’ll find a fully stocked bar, of course, complete with friendly barkeep to pour all your usual favorites. What you’ll also discover, only at Infusion, is a stock of 20+ liquor infusions. With everything from Skittles vodka and Nerds rum to Jalapeño Lime whiskey and Chocolate Mint gin, there is once again a flavor for everyone! You’ll definitely want to try them all (just maybe not in one night)! The Infusion Bar & Banquet Center can most easily be described as one big conversation piece. Each element of the decor is clever, modern and just plain fun. The banquet center’s abundance of space and well-tended bar make it perfect for any event large or small, and the bar is quickly becoming the go-to place for after-work drinks or next level weekend parties. From the kitchen you’ll find some quintessential bar foods like sliders and mini hot dogs with a few new twists like pickle poppers, bacon cream cheese bombs and taco cups. But the go-to item has to be the wings spun in your choice of SEVENTEEN sauces! With that kind of selection, there’s a sure fire winner for everyone at the table.

ART SPEAK

by Jan Traughber

Looking for a great Valentine’s Day gift? Why not try thinking outside of the box? Candy, flowers or perfume are standard, but an evening of soulful, romantic music could stir the embers of your special someone! Back in the fall of 2015 while searching for programming for the Kirkland Fine Arts Center’s 16-17 season, I was excited to discover a quality show that fit in the February slot. This show is not only a great opportunity to enjoy classic soul music in honor of

What’s Going On– The Marvin Gaye Experience

Black History Month, it is also a great Valentine’s Day offering. Plus, Brian Owens is a phenomenal musician and has previously been featured on the Kirkland stage along with alumnae Angel Spiccia during a Holiday Jazz performance. The two Millikin alumni were magic on stage! As one of the pioneers of Motown, singersongwriter and producer Marvin Gaye helped shape the sound of R&B music and is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. Recording artist Brian Owens has been called a Soul man and also has been named “the second coming of Marvin Gaye”—that’s quite a title! What’s Going On – The Marvin Gaye Experience will take place on Millikin University’s campus at Kirkland Fine Arts Center on Saturday, February 11, at 7:30 pm. This concert, a tribute to one of the greatest talents, will be sung by the new voice of soul and Millikin alum Brian Owens. What’s Going On – The Marvin Gaye Experience is Brian’s tribute to the legendary artist and includes music selections that span Gaye’s music-making career. Early solo hits like “Can I Get a Witness” and “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” share space with “You’re All I Need to Get By” and other classics. Of course, any Marvin Gaye song list would be incomplete without enduring songs like “Let’s Get It On,”“Got To Give It Up” or “Mercy, Mercy, Me.”

According to Brian, The Marvin Gaye Experience is about “preservation – upholding the tradition of true soul music that is so desperately needed in our culture today.” The concert features a selection of songs from Marvin Gaye’s 1971 album “What’s Going On.” This album has been called “one of the most socially important artistic works in the history of American music.” Brian Owens is a resident of Ferguson, Missouri, and strives to provide positive and uplifting experiences to the community through the gift and magic of music. He is currently the Artist in Residence of the Grammy Award-winning St. Louis Symphony where he directs the IN UNISON Church and Mentoring program.

Dinosaurs Galore And More! By Angela Myers Slightly suspicious or completely innocent, preschoolers always have unique views of a world still new to them. So every pre-K activity at the Decatur Park District is guaranteed to include a surprise for teachers Denita Roseman and Gabby Cliff. Denita, who supervises the pre-K classes, admitted this is partly because social media both facilitates and interferes with her planning. “To be honest, I don’t plan the class until the week before,” she says. “I tend to change my mind during the weeks leading up to it as I see ideas on Pinterest.” Denita and Gabby try to use both crafts and games for most classes. The crafts help with motor skills, and the games teach the children to follow directions. When Denita looked at her Pinterest board for ideas for the Dinosaurs Galore class, she came up with a dinosaur rhyming song that requires movement during certain lines, pictures of dinosaurs the students can study to determine if the dinosaurs could fly or to count their spikes, a dinosaur puppet and a pin-the-horn-on-the-triceratops game. Even the snack will have a dinosaur theme, with dinosaur eggs (grapes) and dinosaur bones (stick pretzels). 14 | February 2017

Feedback from the children shows they like a combination of new activities and favorites. When they made a pirate craft recently, they enjoyed using daubers to make the mouth, so Denita plans to use them for a dinosaur craft. Another surprise comes because preregistration isn’t required for preschool classes. Sometimes Denita and Gabby are meeting their students the first time on the day of class. “We have our regulars,” Denita says, “but often we have little or no information about other students, though I’d say a majority of them go to preschool, and a few attend other preschool activities.” The preschool classes for children aged two to five are split into three categories: Early Explorers, focusing on animals—like dinosaurs; Calendar Kids, about holidays and seasons; and Storybook Adventure, in which the preschoolers listen to a book, then do art activities that highlight the book’s characters and events. They work on their motor skills and learn how to take turns, share their toys, and share their thoughts in preparation for preschool. An adult must stay with each child, and the two work together on the activity. “It’s a fun interaction to have one-on-one time making their masterpieces and learning new things,” says Denita.

Both Denita and Gabby enjoy getting to know the children and watching them grow and learn. “I always enjoy watching the kids come in and want to do everything by themselves,” says Gabby. “Independence in a preschooler is fascinating. When they have minds of their own, it makes the activity that much more exciting.” Denita graduated from Illinois State University in recreation management. She was hired shortly after an internship at the Decatur Indoor Sports Center. She supervises the Fairview Pool, day camp, preschool programs and the playroom at the DISC. Gabby graduated from Millikin University with a degree in sports management. She supervises the dog parks, lacrosse, road races, mini golf, Decatur Games and the upcoming ropes course as well as assisting with preschool classes. Each class in the pre-K program meets once a month from 10 to 10:40 am at the Johns Hill Senior Center. The next Calendar Kids class, Vibrant Valentines, will meet on Monday, February 6. Storybook Adventure will read Curious George Discovers the Senses on Monday, February 13, and the Early Explorers class, Dinosaurs Galore, will meet February 24. Cost is $7, $5 with resident discount.

Staley, Sr., and Robert Mueller, son of Hieronymus Mueller, were Masons and likely

THE MUELLER-STALEY CONNEC TIONFROM PAGE 29 interacted with each other at the Masonic Temple. The first marriage between the families was between Ruth Staley, Staley’s second eldest, and Ebert Mueller, Robert’s only child, in 1924. The couple’s marriage was short-lived, though they did have a son together, Robert Eugene Mueller. Robert grew up to be an acclaimed, international pianist, probably due to the creative influences and support of his maternal and paternal grandmothers. Then in 1926, Lenore Mueller, granddaughter of Hieronymus, married A.E. (Gus) Staley, Jr., and their wedding became one of the most talked-about social events in Decatur. Together, they had three children, A.E. Staley III, Henry Staley and William Staley. Gus and Lenore’s marriage lasted considerably longer than the first Mueller-Staley union, though they did divorce in 1949. Gus and Lenore had notably different personalities— he was quiet and reserved, while she was open and social. Much of Lenore’s personality can be seen in her wardrobe, and several fantastic pieces are on display at the Staley Museum. As the Staley and Mueller companies were in vastly different fields, there is not much professional connection between them. However, A.E. Staley did contract the Mueller Co. for plumbing fixtures in the new Staley office building, which was completed in 1929. The building is now owned by Tate & Lyle, but the original Mueller fixtures are still in use. A.E. was known as a man who always

wanted the best of everything, and with the Mueller Company’s high standard for craftsmanship, the inclusion of Mueller fixtures was a natural fit. Today, the Mueller and Staley museums work together to tell a large part of Decatur’s industrial history and how it affected the growth of the surrounding community. Descendants of the MuellerStaley connection are active in both museum boards.

THRIVE Q&A

JAN HOOTEN

FAVORITE FAMILY OUTING

Since all our kids and grandkids live out of state, that's a tough one, but when they visit us, it's the Children's Museum and Zoo with the younger grandkids or, in the summer, spending the day on Lake Decatur floating around on our pontoon boat and finding some wakes to jump with our wave runners.

WHY THEATRE 7 IS GREAT FOR MACON COUNTY

Photo: Sarah Jane

All the world’s a stage, and these days so is all of Macon County, thanks to Theatre 7’s embedded and expanding presence – from puppets to trailer parks to murder mystery dinners and more, the local live theater specialists have something new behind the curtain every time. Curious what to expect next, we tapped volunteer marketing coordinator Jan Hooten to give us the inside track.

FAVORITE DATE NIGHT ACTIVITY

Dinner and cocktails with my husband, Bob, at one of Decatur's many top-notch restaurants. If we have friends who can join us, that's even better! If we can cap off that dinner with a live stage play, better still!

32 | February 2017

Theatre 7 is all-volunteer and all-inclusive. Anyone with an interest in any form of theatre arts can be a member, whether that interest lie in performing or in other theatrical endeavors such as directing, producing, costuming, set building, sound design and engineering, scouting around for props (or making them), marketing, designing programs posters, banners and ads...whatever your interest, there's a place for you. We have regular meetings the second Monday of every month at 7 pm, which are open to anyone interested in learning more about us.

MOST EXCITING PART OF THEATRE 7

For me it's the planning, rehearsing and putting together of a show and then seeing that show actually being performed on stage (or performing in it, if that's the case)—whether it's a full-scale stage production or a smaller-scale dinner theatre or murder mystery event.

WHAT WE CAN EXPECT AT VANYA, SONIA, MASHA AND SPIKE

This comedy revolves around the relationships of three middle-aged, unmarried siblings. Two of them, Vanya and his sister Sonya, live together in the family's stone farmhouse and don't work. When Masha, their famous actress sister, threatens to sell the house, all manner of family conflict and trickery ensues in a very funny way. The cast is supported by a young wannabe actor (Masha's "boy-toy"), a young, pretty neighbor who's an aspiring actress and a self-proclaimed psychic housekeeper. The play was nominated for six Tony awards and won the 2013 Tony for Best Play. The original cast included Sigourney Weaver, Kristine Nielsen and David Hyde Pierce.
