Business Expo The Decatur Celebration announced the king and queen candidates and the headliners during the Greater Decatur Chamber Business Expo on May 5. Headliners include 38 Special, Morris Day & the Time, Thompson Square, and Too White Crew, with more to be announced in the coming weeks. Oakwood
The first Oakwood Street Festival of the 2016 season had a great entertainment line-up including Noah's Back Alley Blues, who moved inside to Lock Stock & Barrel due to weather. The skies cleared up briefly, and Ravenhill, a rock band from Nashville, TN, returned to the outdoor stage to close down the festival.

A look back at last month’s happenings
Baby TALK Lullaby Concert Baby TALK's Lullaby Concert, hosted in the Children's Department of the Decatur Public Library, featured classic lullaby sounds performed by Dr. Michael Luxner and the Millikin University String Arts Ensemble. Families were encouraged to attend the concert in their pajamas and enjoyed interactive fingerplays and a bedtime story narrated by a special guest.
Illinois Junior Academy of Science Millikin University hosted the Illinois Junior Academy of Science Exposition, which brought hundreds of middle school and high school students and their families from all over the state to Decatur. More than 1,000 science research projects were on display during the competition held at the DISC.

Pipe Dreams Pipe Dreams Studio Theatre wrapped up its 2015-16 season with What I Didn't Learn in College, a raunchy comedy that follows a recent college graduate after he moves into a house with three beer guzzling frat-types.
Shovelhead at Donnie's Shovelhead, a Central Illinois rock band based out of Decatur, performed at Donnie's Homespun Pizza on May 14. Shovelhead plays everything from killer '90s covers to today's Top 40 artists as well as original music.

The Perfect Pair in Warrensburg unveiled a new coffee shop at its spring Open House in May. The Daily Brew's grand opening featured signature roasts, coffee cake, cinnamon rolls and mango tea. The coffee shop offers a quaint seating area and drivethru service.

Local Artists Take the Spotlight at L.A. Gallery Shows

Each month L & L Studio curates L.A. Gallery Show (Local Artists Gallery Show), a monthly art show based solely on the art that Decatur-area artists share in the Facebook group New and Growing Artists of Central Illinois. Planning and organizing an art exhibit from a social media group has opened opportunities for those who may not have shared their artwork before or may not have an outlet other than posting photos on Facebook or Instagram. Since the group was started in January, many skilled artists have emerged from the online woodwork to network with other artists, share ideas, ask questions and just enjoy the positive atmosphere of the art group. L.A. Gallery Show takes place on the second Saturday of March through September in the halls of Heroic Age Art Center. Featured artists have included teachers from local schools, tattoo artists, college and high school students and other talented individuals who share their art in the group. Each show is vastly different, showcasing many different mediums, sizes and styles. Come out and enjoy hors d'oeuvres, coffee bar, great people and amazing artwork!

DJs Throw Down Thursdays at Donnie’s
Hit Oakland Avenue on a Thursday night, and if the enticing aroma doesn’t pull you in, the pumpin’ beats are sure to do it. Musical mecca Donnie’s Homespun Pizza has a smash hit in its Open Deck Night, hosted each week by Millikin University student Ryan Bodine. Every Thursday evening, beginning at 9:30 pm and lasting until midnight or later, DJs of all genres have the opportunity to exhibit edgy artistic mastery to a crowd ages 21 and older. Performers plug their own turntables into a four-channel mixer via RCA input, with lights, PA, sub and DJ table provided. Every week, approximately three to five DJs perform a 20-30-minute set with their group, with some traveling from as far as St. Louis, Missouri, to participate. Most play electronic music and also tap into other subcategories under the genre known as EDM and Dubstep, which some may also know as “Techno.” Front House Manager Kimi Harper says Open Deck Night is a relatively new event, started in 12 | June 2016

It piggybacks on Donnie’s Wednesday Open Mic Night (Decatur’s longest running), and has steadily increased its following since the start. “A mixed crowd of locals, Millikin students—especially French foreign exchange students” populate the events, she says, and also take advantage Donnie’s drink specials—$2 PBRs and $3 well drinks. Maybe Madonna said it best: “Hey Mister DJ put a record on; I wanna dance with my baby!” And here in Decatur, Illinois, if you want to give a shout out to a DJ, Donnie’s Homespun Pizza is just the place to do it every Thursday evening.

It’s a fundraiser for the Decatur Celebration, but—unlike a lot of diet fads—this quirky, semihealth conscious event won’t ask you to say no to the foods you love the most. Behold, the French Fried 5K. Even though it may sound like an oxymoron (jumbo shrimp, anyone?), this family-friendly event offers options for serious runners as well as serious “funners.” Funners—who can walk, run or even rent a golf cart—will be able to stop along the way and indulge in tasty treats like beer, donuts, corndogs, pizza, ice cream and French fries. Along the route, you’ll also find entertainment in the form of jugglers, musical performers, dancers and costumed characters. Um, did I mention there’s also a giant street party at the end, too? Crossing the finish line rewards you with a Taste of Decatur-style street party in Central Park featuring live music by MissCONDUCT plus food from local purveyors including Sloan’s Calzones, Lincoln Lounge, Robbie’s Grille, Coney McKane’s, The Wharf, Beach House, Heinkel’s and TKG Wing Heaven. Food and drink tickets are included in the registration fee, and additional tickets can also be purchased during the event. Each food sample will be one ticket. Food tickets are $2 each or 6 for $10. Drinks are $5 for alcohol and $3 for pop or water. Denise Albert, a resident of Decatur’s West End, along with her sister Emily Albert and friend Drew Hartrich are a group of participants getting geared up for the French Fried 5K. More on page 16

Denise, who is an avid cyclist of six years and works for the governor as Director of Constituent Affairs, says this will be her third time participating in a local race. “I think it’s awesome we’re having more events like this in Decatur and that people seem to be supporting them,” she says. “We need things like this to get people engaged in our community.” Emily, an Investigations and Process Improvements Manager at Akorn, Inc., shares similar sentiments. “It sounds like a great event to support the Decatur Celebration,” she says, “I love going to all the events downtown, and this is something new and unique.” Drew, owner of landscaping business Natural Edge, has a much simpler take on his decision to sign up. “I’m just looking forward to the food. Not the running,” he says. “I don’t really
even know what we’re getting into. I just heard ‘French fried,’ and I was sold.” Want to run for fun? You can. Want to run for food? You can. Just show the city of Decatur a little love? You can do that, too. Sign up on your own or come with a group. Heck, you can even bypass the running and go straight to the party. Event organizers are encouraging everyone to dress up in costume if they feel like it. “We’re excited to introduce this event to the community as a fundraiser for the Decatur Celebration,” says Lori Sturgill, event organizer and Producer/Director of Decatur Celebrations, Inc. “We expect attendance for this event to grow each year just as the Decatur Celebration has for the past 30 years!” Beth DeBouck is a freelance writer and funner.

Cuba Comes to Life in Decatur By Sue Powell Since the 1960s U.S. embargo, a mystique has wrapped itself around the island as Cuba changed from a haunt for rich and famous Americans to a curious forbidden fruit. Now thanks to Decatur Area Arts Council, you can take a peek behind the curtain. Seemingly frozen in time, the country holds a magnetic intrigue for those of us who haven’t been able to visit freely. A surprising number of area residents have made the trip, however: native Cubans, corporate representatives, church missionaries from First Christian Decatur and First Presbyterian Springfield and travelers seeking “cultural enrichment” (permissible, unlike tourism).

Decatur Area Arts Council invites you to experience Cuba through paintings, sculptures and artifacts brought back to the States by these lucky travelers, plus a pictorial tour of photographs taken by two local artists, Sally McGuire and Virginia Kickle. All of the artwork was created by Cuban artists—some well-known, some street artists and even a sculptor now living in Miami who graduated from the National School of Art in Havana. colors and beautiful historic architecture next to poverty and crumbling facades…modern coco taxis passing horse carts and vintage American Chevys…opulent museums and tributes to the revolution with nearby propaganda billboards touting the Young Communist League and the government’s neighborhood informant program. On one plaza, lively musicians and dancers perform; on another, a man rents donkey rides or a cobbler fixes shoes, all trying to eke out a meager living. Beyond fragrant cigars and fortune tellers, there’s a story of ethnic blending. Smiles on friendly Cuban faces tell of a resilient, upbeat culture, yet thought-provoking art speaks to the plight of the Cuban boat people. While the exhibit will be up for viewing through July 28, don’t miss the opening cultural event that blends the art, music, dance and cuisine of the Cuban culture. Rumba, chicha, salsa and AfroCuban rhythms along with mid-century Cuban pop music played by the band Los Guapos will fill the air. World-renowned dancer José Serrano with partner Erica Maya will demonstrate Cuban dances and teach the audience easy steps so everyone can get up and groove to the beat

like our Cuban neighbors. Create Cuba-inspired mosaics and other art in the studio, and then taste authentic Cuban cuisine prepared by The Beach House. For those who’d like to toast with one of Hemingway’s favorite drinks, a mini-mojito sample awaits you. This family-friendly event is offered free to the public thanks to the generosity of local contributors. Other opportunities include the First Friday Gallery Walk on July 8, which will also feature live Cuban style music. Youth groups can schedule special field trips to enjoy the exhibit and create tile art celebrating José Fuster, a famous Cuban artist.
