# BEHIND THE THRIVE It was just your average THRIVE editorial planning session (if there is such a thing). Publisher, editor, photographers sitting around brainstorming about the latest and greatest in our fair county— and how to tell you all about it. And then we took Kat down a rabbit hole.

It's getting warm, there's so much to do, we crowed! But not everyone wants to be outside, people want to be inside too, the devil's advocates in the group chimed in. Kat stepped away for a coffee refresh, and by the time she reclaimed her seat, we had it all planned out: THRIVE's first-ever Inside/Out issue. So in this month's pages you'll see a delightful pairing

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Me Oh My Oh – on the Bayou! As much as I love being able to use a downhome authentic Hank Williams’ song reference, what I love even more is getting my taste buds on some serious low-country flavor right here in Decatur. And thankfully, Baby TALK exceeds my expectations every year at the annual Grillin’ in the Garden event, its annual fundraiser and my annual opportunity to eat my weight in Louisiana-style seafood. This is without a doubt a can’t-miss foodie opportunity, and I encourage you to grab your tickets for the May 20 event, set for 6-9 pm at Baby TALK headquarters, 500 E. Lake Shore Dr. This year on the menu, artfully prepared by Bizou, is a seafood boil dump containing crawfish, shrimp, new potatoes, sausage and

corn. Combine that Cajun goodness with pulled pork sliders, cornbread, grits and slaw. And I haven’t even gotten to the best part – a dessert bar fit for the likes of a bayou queen – with pound cake and fresh fruit topping, moon pies and pralines. Wash it all down with homebrewed specialty beers from D’Brew Crew or the evening’s signature cocktail – a spiked (or unspiked) sweet tea. Flavor by the mouthful, live music, yard games and all for a good cause, furthering Baby TALK’s noble mission of community family support for local infants, toddlers and parents. Want tickets or more info? Call 475.2234, visit babytalk.org or find them on Facebook.

Stars in My Eyes for Stars over Athens I could write a love song about my feelings for Greek cuisine – oh, baklava, how I love thee. Decatur residents have long been spoiled to the delicacies of Greek cuisine, and the annual Stars over Athens Festival, coming up on May 5 at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, never disappoints. For a food connoisseur like myself, I would say that I’d be hard pressed to find better Greek and Mediterranean baked goods and savory specialties, and the dear St. Catherine’s Society continues to tease the taste buds of all fiercely dedicated event patrons like myself.

Food offerings include mini gyros, pasticho (Greek lasagna), Greek cheese puffs, Greek salad and bread and of course, baklava, among a host of other traditional cuisine. Not only are the food offerings a sweet deal, but the church’s own Athenian dancers along with Gus Kastanis and his Holiday in Greece Band provide a day of amazing entertainment. I can taste the garlicky goodness already. Opa! Get your tickets today by calling 428-9030 or 413-7374. Need more info? Find them on Facebook!

The Food Dude is not a professional food critic. He just really, really likes food.

Pick of the Month Just a little something we ran across and wanted to share.

Complementary Makeover $FREE ($85 value) Merle Norman Cosmetics

148 E Main, Downtown Decatur, 217.267.5187 For those of you who know me personally, I'm sure you already know that I keep it minimal in the makeup category. Really, "minimal" is probably an understatement, even. But we all know that skin care is really important. That's why I love the idea of going straight to the professionals! If you're looking at your summer wardrobe and thinking it's time for a makeup refresh to match, it's a great time to go to Merle Norman for a makeover. Most importantly, they do all the work and you look and feel great when you leave. The best part is that you walk out with a new look and all of the details on file at Merle Norman. That is awesome for two reasons. #1. You don't have to remember it all. #2. Someone else can come buy it for you! Think: Mother's Day gift!

I should also mention that while supplies last through the month of May you'll receive a fun retail gift (above) valued at $41.50 if you spend just $50! It includes cheekcolor, foundation, lipcolor, mascara and a 16oz. travel cup.

Painting, wine, and friendswhat could be better? Maybe you've heard of the popular painting party trend; maybe you're even a long-time participant. Gallery 510's Masters and Merlot might still be something new to you. Masters and Merlot is a new program this spring at Gallery 510. Participants learn painting from one of our artist members, but they also learn from an old Master. Recreating images by the old masters has long been a respected and effective way to learn painting techniques. Assisted by our member artists, participants are guided through

Cocktails & Creations

Drink, art and be merry! Get ready to have some drinks and make some art! Decatur Area Arts Council’s Cocktails and Creations series invites adults to round up some pals and their favorite drinks (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and snacks and have a fun arts experience while socializing with friends. While some classes focus on step-by-step paintings like similar programs, we also offer a variety of arts experiences that are easy to follow but allow for more individual expression. We want you to understand the process

by Jamie Rutherford & Jenny Shields Cowgill the process from start to finish. We allow all skill levels, and no previous experience with painting is required. This is because we focus on helping each person individually. Not only is it a great time, with friends and wine, it's really a mini-art class as well. Everyone has a different perspective, and we encourage putting that personal spin on your painting. Even a master reproduction can be unique to you! No pressure, no grades, just a good time and the chance to make your own masterpiece! We provide everything you'll need, even the wine. Masters and Merlot is always the fourth Thursday of the month. At each class we will focus on a different masterpiece by a variety of artists. Come as many times as you'd like, and take home something different every time! Just bring yourself and your favorite drink if you prefer something other than wine. Dress in your less-than-best, and come join the fun! For more information or to register, please call Gallery 510 at 422-1509. and materials, so we give you the tools and instructions to make the artwork your own. You’ll learn different techniques and use a variety of materials to help you find new ways to be creative. Some of our most popular classes have included Scarf Painting, Earrings Galore, Easy Watercolor and Ink Flowers, Moonlit Cherry Blossom Painting, Gelli Printmaking, Van Gogh Sunflowers and Wine and Cheese Trays. We have quite a variety of classes coming up this summer that you won’t want to miss! These classes give you the chance to use different mediums and techniques to create art that you can hang on your wall, make into cards, wear or give as a gift. Upcoming classes include Easy Painted Peacocks, Alcohol Ink Candle Holder and Pendant, Easy Zentangle Designs, Silhouette Tree Painting, and Patterned Flower Collage on Canvas. OAKWOOD BLOCK PARTY VS RHYTHMIC There Ain’t No Party Like an Oakwood Block Party Cuz an Oakwood Block Party Don’t Stop! By Caitlin Loethen Photos by Kim Mangan It’s lucky number seven for Decatur’s Oakwood Block Party, a party in the streets that appeals across all generations. For seven years, The Oakwood Business Association has been hosting the free monthly summer events in Decatur’s West End between Lock Stock and Barrel and Donnie’s Homespun Pizza. “We do anything from blues, reggae, funk, bluegrass, soul, rock, hip hop and punk, but we try to keep it so people of all ages can enjoy— that way they won’t want to hold their ears

and run away,” says Mike Tasch, Treasurer for the Oakwood Business Association and coordinator for the Oakwood Block Party. And the formula is working—the group expects at least 1,000 Decaturites to attend each event this year. On Saturday, May 7, the 2016 Oakwood Block Party season kicks off, beginning 5pm and continuing well into the early morning hours. Essentially, the format for the 2016 Oakwood Block Party will remain the same, with the only difference occurring theme-wise. “With the

one in May, we are working with one of Millikin University’s fraternities, Sigma Phi Epsilon, to raise funds for the Children’s Miracle Network,” says Mike. In addition to a variety of musical performances throughout the night, you can also explore wares for sale from various nonfood vendors. If you’re one who likes to sit, Mike suggests bringing your own lawn chair as seating is not provided, but food and drinks will be available through the local restaurants in the area, so be sure to bring your appetite with you. One thing is for certain—a free community event like this is what enables the heart of Decatur to continue to beat, so if you’re not busy on any of these four nights, be sure to attend the Oakwood Block Party. 2016 Oakwood Block Party dates include May 7, July 9, August 20, and September 17. premiered the Feet Don’t Fail Me Now show in 2008 and have won numerous awards for their performance. The show also features a beat-boxing sensation from Minnesotan Aaron “Heatbox” Heaton, who is sure to leave you in awe. From fun and funky costume changes to energetic musical stylings, the show is “upbeat, fun and energetic,” says Jan. She first saw the show at an Arts Midwest Conference years ago and knew she had to get the group to perform at the Kirkland Fine Arts Center. At the time they performed at the conference, Jan had

never heard of the group before and was blown away by their energy and connection to the audience. This is a fantastic show for people of all ages, and the cost per ticket for school age children is only $5.00, making it an event that families can enjoy on a budget. FORSYTH DISC GOLF OPEN VS HERO

28 | May 2016

OICON Forsyth Disc Golf Open Puts a New Spin on Spring By Katie O’Riley There’s a new kid in town on the tournament trek, and it’s sure to be a fun driver for kids of all ages! On May 28, Forsyth’s new disc golf course will host the Forsyth Disc Golf Open, a professional-caliber tournament. Disc golf is played with a Frisbee-like disc, with the objective to get the disc into a metal basket that is a couple of feet above ground. “The town of Forsyth has really stepped up to help host this event,” says Johnnie Harrison, owner of Plastic Addicts Disc Golf Supplies and event organizer. The village has contributed to make it a Professional Disc Golf AssociationSanctioned B Tier tournament. Forsyth’s course has 18 holes, and players will play two rounds during the event. Disc golf has been around since 1976, and interest and participation are growing every day. People young and old, all over the world, are getting involved in this sport. The Soy City Challenge, another disc golf tournament, has taken place at Decatur’s Nelson Park since 2011. Anyone can participate in the tournament, and it’s free to attend as a spectator! Johnnie, who hosts as many as 20 tournaments around Central Illinois each year, says the most important take away is “anyone can play.” Players will be divided into categories based on experience level, and competitive players will travel from Indiana and Missouri to play on some of the courses in the Central Illinois area. Participants can sign up online or at the event during check-in, tentatively set for 7:30 am with tee off at 9:30 am. More on page 30

THRIVE Q&A

ELIZABETH CREIGHTON

Summer’s always a mad dash for fun, so as we’re coming to the starting line of one of our fair city’s most unique events, Amazing Race, we wanted the inside track. So we sat down with Elizabeth Creighton, Co-Chair of the Dennis Lab School (DLS) Community Co-Op, to get the scoop.

BEST TECH-FREE WAY TO ENTERTAIN KIDS IN MACON COUNTY Fairview Park is a great place to spend some tech-free time! You can feed the ducks, play on the playground or even rent a tandem bike and explore the bike trails! WHY DENNIS LAB SCHOOL IS A GREAT IDEA FOR DECATUR DLS is one of only a few true neighborhood schools left in the Decatur Public Schools. The growth and positivity surrounding the changes at DLS over the past few years has really helped foster a new, positive vibe in the West End. MOST EXCITING PART OF DENNIS LAB SCHOOL There is always something happening at DLS.... whether it is a local expert coming in to visit a classroom, a group of students venturing to Millikin's campus for class or a new PBL (Project-Based Learning) created by the students that has a lasting impact on the community. Everyone can stay up to date by visiting our website at www.dennislablink.com. WHY DLS CHOSE AMAZING RACE Our family loves The Amazing Race television show, and I had heard of other schools using the concept as a fundraising opportunity. As much as we love our kiddos, it's fun to create and event or two during the year that is just for adults! I decided to try and put one together and see if we had enough interest to make it happen. Lucky for us, it turned out to be a lot of fun, and we are excited about bringing it back on Saturday, May 7.

WHAT’S NEW FOR THE DLS AMAZING RACE We are expanding our race "radius" a little bit, and our finish line will be downtown at Paco's Sol Bistro. Allnew physical, mental and creative challenges await our teams of two— we are eager to put them to the test! SOMETHING ABOUT THE DLS AMAZING RACE THAT WOULD SURPRISE THE AVERAGE DECATURITE The word "race" sometimes throws people off. This is more about completing tasks with your partner— not running a marathon. Grab a friend, and come join the fun! You might be surprised at how well your team stacks up against the competition. READY TO RACE? Entry is just $50—contact Beth Creighton at emason23@hotmail.com.
