LOFT 125 Lifts Friday Night Fun to New Heights Have you ever wanted to be part of your favorite game show? The Decatur Area Arts Council blows the doors off its newest entertainment venue, LOFT 125, with an inaugural event, Improv: Games and Stuff. Set in the style of the popular TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” the interactive evening promises fun for all on Friday, November 13, from 7:30 to 9:30 pm. With LOFT 125, the Arts Council answers the call for a casual alternative to your normal Friday night rendezvous. It’s affordable, relaxing and a great place to gather with friends after a long week. Aptly named, too, with its space on the third floor of the Madden Arts Center and address of 125 N. Water St. in downtown Decatur. With LOFT 125, the Arts Council wanted to create “a neat place for people to go to have fun at an inexpensive cost,” says Sue Powell, Gallery Director. There’s no better excuse to laugh at your friends than when they’re up on stage doing improv. Maybe the local bar scene isn’t your thing, but you still want to get out and socialize on the weekend. This new night spot will open its doors to those ages 21+ and will have various types of unique entertainment on certain Friday evenings. Don’t worry about having an empty wallet or an empty cup, either! It’s BYOB, and TapRoot restaurant will have “improv-inspired” food for purchase. Best of all, tickets are only $10. Bringing props, friends and beverages, then sit back and enjoy the show, or get up and play along. Veteran improv players and purveyors of

hilariousness Jayson Albright and The Kablooey Group (www.kablooeygroup.com) will lead the show and bring some laughs. These event nights will be scattered from November through the summer 2016, and the level of audience involvement will vary depending on the theme. The Arts Council plans to add more events at LOFT 125 in the future. With such a versatile space, they can accommodate a variety of theme nights, whether music, trivia or other casual entertainment. Says Sue: “People don’t have to have any skills or experience; it’s really just to play along, throw out ideas and laugh at [with] each other.”

ART SPEAK

10 Do You Prefer Your Art Shaken or Stirred? The choice is yours – you have until November 12 to decide, at Gallery 510’s 6th annual ARTini! Downtown Decatur’s Paco’s Sol Bistro will host, with Chef Paco Greenwood preparing a fabulous macaroni and potato bar for your enjoyment while you relax to live music by jazz guitarist Derick Cordoba. Load up a martini glass with your favorites, and go back for more. The event puts the ART in ARTini with handpainted martini glasses for a free drink of your choice. Both glasses are yours to keep! Member artists are working hard to create wonderful designs. Art will also grace the walls of Paco’s front room, which will serve as the silent auction house for the evening. Member artists have generously donated pieces for the event, and it’s a great (and fun!) opportunity to own original art by your favorite local artist. Bidding starts at well under the value. A variety of media will be available: drawing, painting, one-of-a-kind jewelry, photography and more. Also up for bid: theme baskets bursting with wares from local businesses and artists. Join in for a great night out on the town. Relax and chat with old friends, or make new ones. Have fun outbidding them in the auction room, or try your luck with the 50/50 raffle. Win or lose, you’ll go home with a pair of martini glasses and memories of a great experience. Tickets are $40 a person. Additional drinks are available at the cash bar. As a non-profit organization, Gallery 510’s fundraisers are crucial to the ongoing success of the programs. Funds from ARTini go toward the continuation of programs like the recent exhibit, October National, a juried show for artists nationwide. Through ARTini, you can also support the Gallery’s youth programs. 10 | November 2015

by Jamie Rutherford

Encouraging involvement in the arts is a great way to help area children and youth. Art is a fantastic outlet and an important activity. The Young Artists’ Showcase is one of Gallery 510’s programs for grades 5-8. Look for it in January 2016, and we'll look for you at ARTini!

Get There: 6th Annual ARTini Paco's Sol Bistro November 12, 6 - 9 pm Tickets $40 per person (call 422-5109)

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Thai Throwdown What’s something football and the restaurant business have in common? Turnovers. This month’s Thai Throwdown is a perfect example of that. Because in this corner we have Thai Thani, formerly Golden Bowl, and in the other, we have Anna Thai, formerly Jasmine Thai. Why all the sports analogies? Could be ’cause my fantasy football team got trampled so bad last week, I had to cry into my Beef Thai Noodle Soup (comfort carryout from Thai Thani in Forsyth). I’m usually a creature of habit, but I do rotate among a few options there – Basil Stir Fry (chicken), Pad Thai (I get it without eggs, and it’s some of the best I’ve had) or the Beef Thai Noodle Soup (rice noodles, sliced beef, scallions, bean sprouts is how I order it). Also, try the shumai, which are shrimp dumplings that come either fried or steamed. I prefer steamed, but if you’re a “texture” eater, you might wanna try it fried. Did I mention Thai Thani offers delivery? Anna Thai, on the other hand, is more of a sitdown option with its “fancier” décor. Yes, walls of cascading water are fancy to me. I would say its biggest draw is the large selection of fresh sushi. With several assorted sushi platters, you’re good to share whether you go with one friend or 10. And it arrives on a boat! Plus, I appreciated that the server went over which roll was which because not everyone likes eel or octopus or smelt roe.

I know, I know. But it’s a Thai restaurant, and you’re talking about sushi, Food Dude! I did try the lunch version of the Lava Chicken. It’s a crispy chicken (not like KFC crispy but more like General Tso crispy) with onion, mushroom and scallion, all of which are tossed in a sweet chili paste. But, really, it’s the sushi that would get me back, and following Anna Thai on Facebook keeps you updated about specials or secret dishes. Both are great options and similarly priced. You just have to ask yourself: “Do I want simple/carryout, or am I craving sushi at the hip Thai spot downtown?” It’s all a matter of preference. And tastiness.

Getaway for a Good Cause Sail away with Big Brothers Big Sisters and experience Night in the Islands

Jessica Pickel will serve alongside celebrity bartender Phil Romano (cover image) at Night in the Islands.

Written by Rachel Peabody Photography by Sarah Jane

The best all-inclusive ticket to have in Decatur is the boarding pass – a coveted, limitedquantity-sold ticket made available by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Macon County (BBBS). With a boarding pass in hand, you could be the winner of one of 10 amazing trips, and who doesn’t look good experiencing the royal treatment in the Dominican Republic? But the early sailor gets the cruise; with only 300 tickets being sold, you’ll want to act fast to get in on the action. Each ticket is $100, and you can buy more than one.

Support Youth Mentoring

I’m in, and my bags are packed.

The program’s success is due to the relationships of “bigs” and “littles,” and volunteers and funding are always needed to make sure all children in the organization are matched.

Local celebrity bartenders set the mood for a fun evening. The bartenders compete for tips and bragging rights – get caught up in the excitement, as all proceeds from the evening go back to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Macon County . Appetizers, a DJ and a photo booth, too – it’s an all-inclusive evening at Night in the Islands. And you don’t have to have a boarding pass for entry. The event is open to the public, and BBBS encourages Decatur and Macon County to come see what they are all about. Check it out Friday, November 13, at the Decatur Club from 7-10 pm.

Night in the Islands is a key fundraiser for BBBS and keeps the local mentoring program thriving. Brittin Haury, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Illinois, has been a “big” four times in eight years. “I’ve seen firsthand the impact mentoring has on youth. Kids are impressionable, and they need positive forces in their life that challenge them, encourage them and expose them to new opportunities,” she says.

“We put a lot of effort into making the perfect match,” says Brittin. “We match based off similar interests between the big and little, and the result is a long lasting mentoring relationship that, in many cases, is just as rewarding for the big as it is the little.” Currently 70 children are on the waiting list in Macon County. “There is a match for everyone,” she says. “Four hours a month, and you can really make a huge impact in the life of a child.”

THRIVE Q&A

Dan O'Loughlin

What services does D & O Contractors provide to Veterans? D & O provides 16 units of supported housing through a federal grant and rental assistance through the Decatur Housing Authority. We manage and maintain them and our partner, Lutheran Child and Family Services of Illinois, provides the care and counseling through funding from the Department of Human Services.

Photo: Elizabeth Highcock

Dan O’Loughlin of D & O Contractors in Decatur, Illinois, has been an active member in the community for nearly 40 years. Though not a veteran himself, in the early 2000s he saw an opportunity to serve Decaturarea veterans by providing personal housing. Since then, he has expanded his efforts by starting the Coalition of Veterans’ Concerns (CVC). With the help of other agencies in the area, the organization hosts Stand Down, an annual event that connects veterans and their families in the central Illinois area with housing, health care, mental health and financial assistance.

You have worked with the City of Decatur for quite some time now; what’s your history within the Decatur community? I have worked with the City of Decatur for over 20 years as a contractor on many projects that improve the houses of Decatur’s homeowners, making them accessible, energy efficient and safe.

32 | November 2015

What event in your life led you to want to help Veterans? The late Kathleen Taylor introduced me to a Veteran who did not have access to the bathroom in his home for eight years. He was permanently fixed in a wheelchair, and the bathroom door was 20 inches wide. After making his bathroom wheelchair accessible, I saw how happy he was. I had never done anything with so much satisfaction. After learning through Kathleen that Veterans are the largest percent of the population of homeless in America, I had to act.

What is the CVC? The CVC, the Coalition of Veterans’ Concerns, is a collaboration of different organizations coming together and has grown over the years to have a large membership with 60 to 70 different agencies providing resources to Veterans in Central Illinois.

When does the Stand Down event happen this year? On Friday, November 13, at the Salvation Army in Decatur. Doors will open for Veterans and Veterans’ families at 10:00 am and close at 2:00 pm. We serve a free, hot lunch all day, and the wonderful students at Mr. John’s School of Cosmetology come and give free haircuts. We have about 35 agencies there every year providing supplies and resources.
