Ever wonder who’s behind all the THRIVE limitless-ness? Because clearly, Kat and Joli can’t be that many places at once – to count constellations at Astronomy Jamboree. To roll into the action the Derby girls provide. To dream of flying high like the BMX-ers. To get our agritainment on with the inside track on Farm Progress. But one of the most oftasked questions we field surrounds the mystique of our favorite food critique column. So without further ado, we bring you… Food Dude!

Out & About

A look back at last month’s happenings

Swim. Bike. Run. Remember. Nelson Park and Decatur Lake served as a beautiful backdrop for the 9th annual Rodney T. Miller Triathlon on July 11 and 12. Over 250 athletes young and old participated in the 2-day event, which includes a youth and adult race. Hundreds of volunteers and spectators came out to cheer on the athletes as they raced through the park and streets of Decatur.

Out & About

A look back at last month’s happenings

Season of Celebration The Decatur Celebration launched its Season of Celebration Concert Series this summer to mark the 30th Anniversary of the 4-day street festival. Central Park was full of music fans as the Stray Indians Club and Matt Carter Band took to the stage for the July concert.

West End Steves

Weather cut the Oakwood Street Festival short on July 12, but not before the West End Steves took to the stage. Covering tunes by Fleetwood Mac, Ryan Adams, and Tom Petty, this local band was named in honor of former Winery owner and West End legend Keith Boaz.

Make that a Double

Downtown's Coney McKanes doubled its footprint last month when it opened its new dining space in the property next door. The new space offers bar seating and two levels of tabletop seating, with the same great food!

Sweet Deal

WAND and Bob Ridings teamed up to deliver some sweetness to Decatur on July 15. For one hour, each car received a free bag of sweet corn to celebrate Riding's 40th year in Taylorville.

My Personal Shopper

Extreme couponers are paying it forward through the My Personal Shopper storefront. Just inside D&D Roofing, patrons can get staple, brand name items for discount prices. Mark your calendars, as the store is only open the first four days and the Saturday after the 15th of every month.

Kids & Adults See Stars at Astronomy Jamboree

“Kids think we’ve painted Saturn on the end of the telescope,” says Jeff Tish of Macon County Conservation. Jeff has been organizing the Astronomy Jamboree for nearly 35 years, and he’s seen many eyes opened by the view through a telescope. Even adults, he says, are surprised when they actually see the moon or Saturn so closely. They’re amazed when they see the crescent view of Venus and understand that Venus has phases like the moon. And they’re amazed when someone shows them how to use the Big Dipper to find the Little Dipper. “I’ll be using lasers to point out stars or the moon,” says Jeff of this year’s event, Astronomy Jamboree: Billions of Stars. “It’ll shoot a beam of light right up into the sky, so it looks like it’s actually reaching the star or planet.” But learning to use a telescope comes at the end of the Jamboree if the weather cooperates. Rain or shine, there will be door prizes and astronomy-related crafts. Participants will roast marshmallows around the campfire while they learn about constellations. They’ll hear the stories of the ancient Greeks and Native Americans, who used the moon, stars and

08 | August 2015

planets to determine when to plant and when to prepare for the annual floods or the long winter ahead. “It’s a wonderful chance for families to get out of the house, drive a few minutes, and spend the evening with other families,” says Jeff. “It’s like a mini-astronomy camp.”

Get There Astronomy Jamboree: Billions of Stars Saturday, August 22, from 7 to 9 pm at the Friends Creek Conservation Area near Argenta. Register online by 5 pm August 21 if you want to create a craft. If you’re bringing a large group, call 423-7708. There is no charge. If you want the evening to last longer, bring your tent and spend the night after the Jamboree at the Friends Creek Campground. For Macon County residents, a site without electricity is only $10 a night or $17 for a site with electricity. For out-of-county residents, those costs are $12 or $20. To make a reservation, call 423-7708.

I think it's safe to keep this Publisher's Pick review short and sweet. You know how all your friends make really great Sangria and you can never figure out a recipe that works? It's time to discover Lolea No1 & No2 Sangria (Red & White, respectively). No time to slice fruit and experiment with wines and fizzy pop? Who cares. Your yard still needs mowed? So what; it's rained every day this summer. Invite your friends over anyway. You'll dazzle them with your Lolea Spanish Sangria. If the fresh yet sophisticated flavors and effervescence don't do it, be sure to point out the swanky flip-top (Grolsch-style) stopper!

ART SPEAK

by Eric Hector

Heroic Age Gets Fresh with New Farmers Market Starting June 4 and continuing every Thursday from 3:30-7:00 pm until October 15, Heroic Age Art Center is hosting the Auri Fresh Farmers Market. The Auri Fresh Farmers Market is the brainchild of Sue Russotti, and from the first moment Sue talked about having Heroic Age Art Center be the location for the market, her enthusiasm has been infectious. Sue is dedicated to farmers and all the benefits they bring to our area. Her passion for local agriculture and our community as a whole is truly inspiring. Sue has several goals for the market. The first is to make sure that it is a profitable outlet for local farmers and artists. The next is to create a social gathering spot for Mt. Zion and Decatur area residents. She also wants the market to provide a predictable, ample selection of high quality fresh, locally grown produce and arts for its customers. Finally, the market should serve as a venue to connect local farmers, growers, artists, and crafters with their community. Hosting the market at the Heroic Age Art Center was a perfect opportunity to meet these goals since the idea of gatherings where our community can interact around artistic and creative activities is exactly what the Art Center was founded for. The Art Center’s artists have embraced the event wholeheartedly, providing their own various arts and services at every event. In addition to the artists from the Art Center represented at the market, Sue has assembled an amazing group of farmers, growers, artists, and craftspeople dedicated to making this market successful. The market has featured singers, guitar players, painters, jewelers, and seamstresses, plus demonstrations ranging from beekeeping to throwing pottery on a wheel. Farmers and vendors have provided everything from fresh cut flowers, herbs, zucchini, blueberries, strawberries, pasta,

beets, onions, sweet corn, cucumbers, artisan breads, essential oils, plants, pet treats, and Amish apple butters and salsas. So if you’re in the mood for art, produce, and fun, stop by the Heroic Age Art Center Thursdays between 3:30 and 7:00 pm and check out what’s fresh.

Eric Hector is creative director of Heroic Age (HA) Art Center, the area’s newest art collective. Located at 135 North Henderson in the Old Mt. Zion Grade School, the HA Art Center is a great place to buy, sell, create and learn about art of all kinds. Large build-to-suit studio spaces are available. Come out and visit for the ultimate atmosphere of creativity and community. 10 | August 2015

THE FOOD DUDE

From Waffle to Tot: Ted’s Taters Have you ever wanted to skip the steak and go straight for the baked potato? Well, that’s exactly what you can do at Ted’s Taters where you can go small or large, classic or loaded! There are so many ways to have your ‘taters’ at Ted’s that you might miss a few if you’re not careful. (I know I did…I overlooked one of my favorites on the menu, sweet potato fries, so I’ll have to go back for round two soon). At Ted’s you can get your potatoes baked or fried, sliced or diced, sweet or savory. Any variety you like from waffle to tot is available here! But you don’t want to overlook the other staples on the menu. You’ll want to rediscover some childhood favorites like mini corn dogs, cheese toasties (grilled cheese for you out-of-towners) and even sloppy joes. Seriously, how awesome is that? When was the last time you saw sloppy joe on a restaurant menu? (And it was delicious!) Plus you’ll want to finish your meal off with one of the mouth-watering homemade pies served by the slice (or take home a WHOLE pie, why not?!?). With its location nestled between CherryBerry and Overlook Adventure Mini Golf, you’ve got everything you need to make a day of it.

Get There Ted's Taters 2505 Nelson Park Rd., Decatur 791-5065 Find them on Facebook!

They jump, they fly, they flip, they soar. They take “Look, Ma, no hands! to new heights, and fear has no limits. I was 17 before I experienced the thrill of a roller coaster, and that first-time rush is the feeling Decatur Celebration-goers can expect from King BMX Stunt Show.

Half pipes, back flips and the most ramps of any stunt team in the world – the brainchild of X Games alum Keith King brings Decatur Celebration attendees an all-new high. Keith started with an Evel Knievel bike for Christmas 1976 and has never looked back. As Public Relations Director Dani Swords describes it: “Pro bike riders perform gravity defying aerial stunts over large CONTINUED ON PAGE 16

ramps in addition to mind boggling technical maneuvers on the ground.” A professional emcee narrates while four professional BMXers perform incredible stunts like backflips and tail whips. The show isn’t choreographed – riders perform stunts in return for cheers from the crowd. Riders come with plenty of accolades, too, as they have competed in the X Games, Dew Action Sports Tour, and Gravity Games, and some are even featured as characters in video games. Chances are you may have even seen them on television. In 2012, King BMX Stunt Show, also known by the stage name “American BMX Stunt Team,” was featured on multiple episodes of NBC’s hit series America’s Got Talent, placing in the Top 48 out of 76,000 acts. They’ve also been featured on Fox Sports, and they’re regular guests on nationally syndicated radio program The John Boy and Billy Big Show. They’re a preferred vendor for the NBA and NFL and provide entertainment for NASCAR, WNBA, IRL and other sporting events. With the ability to attract attention and garner interest from one generation to the next, King BMX transcends all demographics, mainly because even if you haven’t been on a BMX bike before, you more than likely have been on a bicycle of some kind before – though not like this. “King BMX isn’t your typical bicycle demo; it’s a production that never gets old,” says Dani. You’ll find King BMX’s death-defying brand of action on State Street from August 7-9 during Celebration. 16 | August 2015

Move over, Prairieland Punishers coming through, and they’re moving on up in the world of professional Roller Derby. Watch these amazing athletes on skates as they hit the floor August 15 at the Decatur Civic Center! To know roller derby is to love it, or at least that’s what a Prairieland Punisher would tell you. And just talking to a roller derby competitor – like Erin “Pipe Down” Piper – it’s next to impossible not to be excited about a sport that combines a lot of really awesome things like women empowerment, athletes on skates and names like “Bambi Bloodlust” and “Funky Cold Bredina.”

The Prairieland Punishers, established in August 2011, is definitely one of the most unique sports offerings in the area. Did you know these facts about your hometown derby team? continued ON PAGE 30

Being a punisher is more than just about being teammates. “It’s a sisterhood, a family, and we develop this amazing camaraderie with each other,” says Erin. “I’ve met some of the best people I know through roller derby, and your teammates turn into your sisters – we’re all in this together as one.”

Roller Derby is a sport… and super athletic.

Think roller derby is about girls in fun tights, sparkly skates and crazy nicknames skating around in circles? Think again. Roller derby is a sport full of fierce competitors – girls who can block and jam with the best of them and who hit the gym for cross-training and power lifting several times a week.

There’s more to the name.

“Roller derby names allow you to give yourself a new identity and really define your true persona,” says Erin. “Some girls' names are reflective of their personality, and others go with puns off of their first or last name.”

This means higher stakes matches, farther travel and upped intensity – but no doubts that the Prairieland Punishers are up for the challenge. 501c3 non-profit status was another goal realized in 2015, reiterating the team’s commitment to the area and their passion for giving back. “Since 2011, we’ve given back more than $20,000 to the community,” says Erin. “We support charities that mean a lot to us personally – some of the girls have really special connections with these organizations – and it means so much to us to know we are doing what we love and making a difference.”

One thing is for certain – roller derby is a sport with flair, personality and *excuse our French* – bada$$ women. That’s why their latest hard earned achievements, over 2 years in the making, are really Erin encourages the community to come exciting for this growing team. out to support, meet and cheer for the hometown derby team. THRIVE Q&A

Matt Jungmann

How does the show keep getting better year after year? The exhibitors bring a tremendous amount of energy. They put in so much effort to put on a good show, and it keeps people coming back. Our exhibitors make this the “can’t miss” event in the ag industry. For a normal show, we typically see crowds in excess of 150,000 people, and we are really proud of that.

What does this show mean to the ag industry? Photo: Penton Agriculture

The crown jewel of ag industry trade shows, the Farm Progress Show, is coming back to its home in Decatur, and many local citizens are eagerly anticipating September 1-3 at Progress City. We caught up with Matt Jungmann, National Events Manager, to get a glimpse into his life behind the scenes planning the agriculture industry’s most beloved event.

Every industry has its trade show, and for agriculture, this is the big one. The permanent sites (Decatur, IL and Boone, IA) allow our exhibitors to have space to unveil their newest products here, and it helps increase the international presence that we see. It’s really a show that has global ag connections.

What’s the first thing you do when the show is over? I’ll pack up and go home to see my family. Then I leave again in 2 days to do this all over again at Husker Harvest Days, our farm show in Grand Island, Nebraska.

What’s something about the Farm Progress Show that would surprise you? It takes over 600 volunteers to make this event happen. We get tremendous support, and they help make the event special.

What’s the most exciting part of the Farm Progress Show for you?

Most requested Farm Progress Show activity?

For me, it’s the summer months leading up the event, right when everything is coming together. The anticipation and energy leading up to the event is contagious. The preparation starts months in advance. In fact, tents started going up in Decatur in mid-July.

People love to see the live field demonstrations, which have been a FPS tradition since our first show in 1953. Weather permitting, we will have this hallmark event again.

Favorite food on site?

That’s a great question and one that I have as well. I can’t wait to see what’s next for our show. With our recent expansion to the Decatur site (over 400,000 sq. ft!) of extra exhibitor space, the sky is the limit for what our exhibitors can do and bring. I’m always just as surprised and excited as the next guy to see what our exhibitors are bringing to the table.

Definitely the appetizer at the concert on Wednesday night. That means that we’ve made it through day 2 of the 3-day event, and the pressure is off. Plus, this year Craig Morgan is the entertainment, so I’m looking forward to that.
