I mean, just because we’re writing about sports this issue doesn’t mean we’re all Sporty Spice all the time. Little secret: While we’re passionate about our art, we may or may not live it. We dream about the Big Obstacle 3K, and fighting inflatables like the Hulk. We devise new ways to grab new air at the return of the Mack. We love ourselves some dirt track action at Macon. We really love ourselves some funnel fries at the track. But sometimes, we kick back and appreciate the true art of sport. In short, we’re you. Multifaceted, multitalented, and all about Macon County. Because like Decatur, we’re City Limitless.

SPOTLIGHT

Return of the Mack

This Return of the Mack isn’t the catchy onehit wonder from the mid-1990s sung by Mark Morrison. However, this Mack making its way back to Decatur brings a whole lot more action. The catalyst in bringing the Gus Macker 3-on3 basketball tournament back for its third year is Decatur’s own Rodney Walker, a former college and professional basketball player. Rodney wants today’s youth to experience a positive community event like he did when he was growing up in Decatur. So at SkyWalker International Sports Complex, he brought in a variety of different sponsors throughout town to return basketball to the streets and re-introduce this two-day event to a younger generation. “This generation (of children) didn’t grow up playing in the parks; they didn’t grow up playing outside; they all grew up in the gyms,” he says. “My generation and the one before us grew up in the parks playing basketball.” Now he’s seeing participants as young as 7 years of age signing up to participate in the basketball games, stating, “It’s good that we are reaching out to that younger generation and they’re seeing some interest in it and want to come out to participate because it’s good fun.” Rodney also adds another element to the Gus Macker basketball tournament by incorporating a dunk competition that is being sponsored 08 | July 2015

by Caitlin Loethen

by Decatur Earthmover Credit Union, a 3-point shoot-out sponsored by Miles Chevrolet and a bench press competition that SkyWalker International Sports Complex is sponsoring, too. Food vendors will also be in tow for the weekend of July 18 and 19, with some of the finest foods out there to choose from. But Rodney says the beneficial event wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Decatur community. “We want to make sure something stays here that is positive. Each year, someone is stepping up to keep it here in Decatur,” he says. “The town looks forward to it; we love doing it, and as long as everybody keeps supporting it, we will continue to try and bring it back.”

ART SPEAK

by Jamie Rutherford

Art and Sport –

Beyond the Mundane

You may not come to an immediate mental connection between art and sport, but historically the two have a well-established link. Since ancient Greece, when artists famously and frequently portrayed the human form in various sports, athletics have held an artistic interest for many. Dan Modzelewski of Shelbyville has expertly carried this theme in his own work. He has portrayed the athletic figure of graceful ballerinas, the stoic determination of a pitcher at the mound and even

10 | July 2015

action shots as a player slides into the plate. These baseball-themed images have recently gained him recognition and entrance into the American Sport Art Museum and Archives in Daphne, Alabama. His baseball players, portrayed in sepia tones of pastels and charcoal, are somewhat nostalgic – reminiscent of a “golden age” of baseball when the sport became America’s pastime. The existence of the American Sport Art Museum is evidence in itself of the relationship between these two separate worlds. Whether baseball, horse racing, or any number of team or individual sports, these games become a type of artistic endeavor themselves. Artists have an understanding of the drive to improve and push oneself, something shared by athletes of all kinds because they have this drive, too. This drive may have much to do with why artists like Modzelewski choose athletes as their subjects. The fine-tuned physical form of the athlete, as well as the dedication and determination it takes to excel in any particular field, continues to interest many artists and art lovers. Modzelewski's images help demonstrate this connection. Athletes and artists alike are heavily identified with their careers. Both art and sport may be considered unessential to mainstream society, but both continue to hold their place because they go beyond the mundane. They become more about the human spirit: the passions that drive us and the links between people as fans cheer and artists capture moments in a frame. Dan Modzelewski is a member of Gallery 510. You can see his work on display on a regular basis.

Jamie Rutherford is Executive Director of Gallery 510.

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

The Dirt

on Great Track Food

It’s not fancy, and it’s not new, but there’s just something about “track food” that’s so so good! While you’re enjoying the fast-paced dirt track action of Macon Speedway, don’t overlook the action behind the stands. While you might just be expecting to find the usuals like hamburgers, hot dogs and popcorn (which you will), you’ll also find a few surprising menu items and might be introduced to something brand new. If you’re looking for just a little something, stop by the snack booth for a bag of popcorn or candy bar or my personal favorite and a throwback to your younger days, a snow cone. In the heat of the summer that cool sweet treat really cannot be beat. Want something a little more filling but sticking to the classics? Then you’ll want to hit the main concession stand, where you’ll find all your backyard summer favorites: hamburgers, hot dogs, corn dogs and fries. There’s something inexplicably great about a classic track burger with its melty cheese plastering its slightly soggy bun to the burger patty. Break open the foil on that bad boy, and hit the condiments table, where you can load up with ketchup and mustard and also discover chopped onions available via sauce packet (seriously, discover togo onions - how handy is that?!).

Now, if your pallet is a little more refined, you might want to head over to the side of the main concession stand, where you’ll find the fancier fare, which wasn’t always a part of track side dining and isn’t found at every 1/2 mile oval. Here you’ll find tenderloin, pork chop and even ribeye sandwiches. But the can’t-miss item here is the walking taco. My first experience with a walking taco was trackside, and now it’s a menu item I seek out at all dirt tracks, street fairs and festivals. This delicious piece of culinary genius is a snacksize Doritos bag cut open and filled with your favorite taco toppings. They’ll load it up with taco meat, lettuce and cheese and leave you to pile on your salsa, jalapeños and sour cream. Stick a fork in it, and you’re good to go; no need to slow down or sit - there’s racing to see after all. Don’t forget to round out your dining experience with dessert. You’ll find a convenient twist on the classic funnel cake - funnel FRIES! No need to wrestle with pulling apart your funnel cake with one hand while covering yourself in powdered sugar… these funnel fries are easy, convenient and oh so yummy.

SUPERSIZED FUN By Beth DeBouck

Imagine all of the awesome obstacle courses you used to come up with in the backyard as a kid or even on the playground during recess – up the slide, zigzag through the swings and spin around the merry-go-round twice. Now imagine that supersized – and in Decatur! The Decatur Park District and United Way of Decatur have come together in order to create a totally unique racing experience with the Big Obstacle 3K, which takes place on Saturday, July 25, from 10 am to 2 pm in Fairview Park. The event is open to everybody 16 and older. Debbie Bogle, United Way of Decatur & Mid-Illinois Executive Director, explains that 22 obstacles will be involved in the race, including six large inflatables

– everything from slides to tube crawls to climbing walls – and military obstacles such as army crawls, hurdles, giant cylinders and tires that put your strength and endurance to the test. (And if you’re picturing Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin, you and I are on the same page!) Proceeds from the event will help benefit Decatur Park District Youth Sports and United Way’s Community Impact Fund. “It should be a lot of fun,” says Debbie. “We’re excited to bring something like this to Decatur. We’ve already had great response, so we think this will be a really great event.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 16 July 2015 | 15

The race offers several options depending on your level of “athletic ability.” I only put that in quotes because I, myself, have nay an athletic bone in female finishers (three heats, up to my body, so I’m more likely to sign up 25 people each), and then there’s the for one of the non-competitive heats. Dirt Track

Dynasty

Written by Rachel Peabody Photos by Sarah Jane

They say legends are made, not born, and Macon Speedway knows this to be true. Some of their biggest legends will be back on the track for Hall of Fame and Driver Recognition Night on Saturday, July 18, paying homage to the track that helped them get their start – and in several cases, build their record careers. More than 80 of the track’s past drivers and champions, along with their families, have been invited to attend. If you’re one with a history of your own with Macon Speedway, this will be the night for you to relive some of your favorite speedway moments from the past. “Macon Speedway holds a lot of special memories for a lot of people,” says one of the track’s current co-owners, Bob Sargent. “Our Hall of Fame night is one of my favorite events, and it means a lot to our drivers and patrons.” 28 | July 2015

A legendary local dirt track with a storied history, Macon Speedway is a summertime staple for local entertainment. The excitement of race cars screaming around the track and the smell of dirt in the air make for an intoxicating combination that has kept fans filling the stands for the last 70 years.

The Glory Days On Hall of Fame night, past and current drivers will parade around the track. Their resumés will be read, their racing histories celebrated, and fans will enjoy a glimpse of “where are they now.” “This is a great way for us to celebrate the history of Macon Speedway,” says Bob. “Built in 1946, the track has been in continuous operation since it opened, and through the years, some great racing history has taken place here.” continued ON PAGE 30

DIRT TRACK DYNASTY from PAGE 28

Throughout its history, the track has been called “the world’s fastest 1/5 mile dirt track,” along with “the other Brickyard,” and many big name drivers have barreled into turn four at the Speedway. Premier races with big purse winnings have brought the best in the sport to Macon and in many ways have helped put a small town in Central Illinois on the map. According to Bob, being centrally located in the Midwest and keeping the race track modern over the years have helped Macon Speedway’s popularity continue to grow. Today, the track is co-owned by Bob, along

THRIVE Q&A

Kim Mangan

Most exciting part of the triathlon My favorite moment every year is when the Rodney Miller Spirit Award is presented to an athlete who inspires the co-chairs and race director by demonstrating courageous, positive and inspiring personal characteristics that embody the true spirit of sports and fitness. These athletes are so inspiring and make this volunteer proud to be a part of the event. Photo: Sarah Jane

We know what we like to do around here during summer, but some Macon Countians really like to heat things up – they don’t just swim, bike or run, for example; they do them together in Triathlons! We figured anyone game for that must be in on the best entertainment options around, so we tapped Rodney T. Miller (RTM) Triathlon Volunteer Coordinator Kim Mangan to let us in on her secrets.

Something about the triathlon that would surprise the average Decaturite In the triathlon community, the Rodney T. Miller Triathlon is known to be a world-class event due to the overwhelming community support and large number of volunteers. Additionally, proceeds from the Triathlon have gone back into the community each year via grants to local non-profits. To date, the RTM Tri has contributed approximately $40,000 to youth athletic programs, including a recent grant to the Decatur Park District for baseball field upgrades.

Favorite SUMMER ACTIVITY

What’s next for the triathlon?

The FREE outdoor festivals. I absolutely love Blues in Central Park, Oakwood Street Festivals and of course, Decatur Celebration! When the whole family is in tow, it's a tough choice between golf at Overlook Adventure Park or catching a movie at The Avon.

New this year, a portion of the race proceeds will be directed to a fund at Millikin created in memory of Rodney Miller, who graduated in the Class of 1988 and who was a record-holding swimmer for the University. The Rodney T. Miller Athletic Fund for Swim will support Millikin’s Swim Team by providing additional operating support for equipm e n t upgrades, travel expenses, capital needs, and other purposes related to athletic needs.

Why the triathlon is a great thing for Decatur? The RTM Triathlon brings hundreds of people from all over into Decatur, giving the community an opportunity to showcase one of its most valuable resources: its people. Traveling athletes and their families stay in area hotels and eat in our restaurants, creating an economic impact. Plus, it's just fun! Survey results say participants, volunteers and spectators alike have a great time. 32 | July 2015
