Fun and festivals go together like peanut butter and jelly. Throw in some flea markets, and you’ve got a darn near perfect summer. With this issue we explore all that and more and get into Macon County’s granddaddy of them all, Decatur Celebration. With fried dough their king, festivals and fitness are more like pickles and ice cream, at least on the surface. But put down the funnel cake for a minute at any given festival, and you’ll likely find a fun run, 5K and beyond to dip a toe into. That’s where FatattheFinish. com comes in, tracking road races across Central Illinois. One of the site founder’s favorite runs is in Mt. Zion, where you’ll also find the Finders Flea Market showing upcycled, recycled and just plain found treasures of yore on the last Saturday of the month from MayOctober. Rodney T. Miller Triathalon
Despite less than ideal racing conditions, hundreds of athletes, volunteers and spectators filled Chandler Park and Nelson Park during the 2-day Rodney T. Miller Triathlon, which took place on July 12 and 13, 2014. As a safety precaution, the swim portion of both the kids and adult races was canceled due to weather and a duathalon (run - bike - run) course implemented. Proceeds from the race benefit a scholarship fund created to enhance and aid Decatur/Macon County area children in sports-related programs or activities.

The Children's Museum of Central Illinois has revamped their learning centers, adding a new building room and toddler area upstairs. Other additions and improvements have been tested and approved— go visit today!
Governor Oglesby Mansion Richard J. Oglesby served his country well as a U.S. Senator, a Civil War Union General and a three-time Governor of Illinois. The Oglesby Mansion is open to the public for tours Wednesdays and Saturdays through August. The restored home is also available for individual or group tours as well as special events by calling 423-7708.
Summer Strings The Decatur Park District's Summer Strings program was invited to perform at First Presbyterian Church on July 13. Retired music teacher Rose Marie Thompson accompanied the students on piano and performed a special piece with Summer Strings Director Jason Zimmerman.

Fitness & Fun Start at FatattheFinish.com With festivals come food, fun and… fitness? You’d be surprised the number of festivals that offer a run – fun or otherwise – as part of their agenda. To get a handle on what’s happening around the area, we chatted with Nicole Heath, blogger and founder of the uber-popular web site Fat at the Finish. Now a Certified Personal Trainer, Certified Adult Distance Running Coach and physical rehab specialist, Nicole chronicles her experiences since making the decision to stop yo-yo dieting and focus on fitness. She made running a key part of her lifestyle and wanted to make it easier for others to find events—and let them know you don’t have to be fast or fit to run.
5K Memorial Race and One Mile Fun Run, which ties with the Blue Mound Fall Festival (August 7-9), “is a very flat course, which makes for a great race time!” Another favorite is the Mt. Zion Pony Express Days 5K, this year August 16.

“I put together this website because I felt Central Illinois needed a place to see all of the fantastic races going on in the area and to find out more about them,” she says. “Race directors can go to the site and submit the information for any upcoming Central Illinois race for free.” Since starting the site in 2010, Nicole has grown it by leaps and bounds—in fact, it’s now the largest listing of road races spanning the cities of Decatur, Springfield, Champaign, Bloomington, Mattoon, Effingham and Peoria and the surrounding areas. The site gets visitors from all 50 states! Nicole’s passion for running continues, and she’s in the midst of a 50 States Challenge – to complete a 1/2 marathon in all 50 states. She’s up to 13 so far and has a couple more on the docket this year. “My favorites have been Chicago - the lakefront is beautiful – and Arizona - I love the scenery of mountains and cactus yet it was flat!” Locally, she finds lots of favorite events, too, including the Macon County Obesity Prevention Coalition-sponsored race along the Decatur Celebration parade route: “This is a great race for anyone who has never done one before because of the short distance (about half a mile) and awesome crowd support.” And the Danny Byard
Nicole’s number one piece of advice for new runners “Start slow, don't burn yourself out. If you have not been exercising at all, start with walking and ease into running with intervals of walk/run until you can gradually increase your endurance. Hydration is also extremely important, especially when running in the summer and fall. I'd also suggest signing up for a local 5K - it usually helps to support a local cause and will give you a goal to keep you motivated!”

Two Anniversary Parties for the Arts! It’s been 10 years since the Decatur Area Arts Council opened the doors of the Madden Arts Center (MAC) and the dream of a vibrant community arts center in downtown Decatur became a reality. Over the past decade, it has become the place the arts call home. That calls for a celebration, and we’re having two! First, a free public event at the MAC on Friday, August 8, 5-7:30 pm! When you arrive, you’ll be swept into the festivities by one of our favorite local bands, Imagine That, outside rockin’ the 100 block of North Water Street. Fun stuff to do on all three floors of the building, along with food and drink, are all brought to you courtesy of Brechnitz Group of Raymond James. Inside in the Anne Lloyd Gallery, discover the amazing Decatur’s Art Treasures exhibit. Modeled after the grand opening show in 2004, it showcases a wide range of fine art and antiques on loan from local private collections. The pieces on display include Cezanne to circus car replicas, Far Eastern art to far-out contemporary pieces. Come see items that you’re not likely to see anywhere else! The second floor offers you the chance to try your hand at creating art or to watch an artist demonstration. You might even run into a wacky character talking with a silly accent (Theatre 7 and Richland Community College giving a sneak peak of their fall musical Monty Python’s Spamalot). On the third floor, DAAC celebrates great local arts groups – Barn Colony Artists, Symphony Guild of Decatur, Gallery 510, Knit Nite, Juvae Jazz and Opus 24. Check out their displays and miniperformances throughout the evening. Our friendly neighborhood galleries will also be joining in the celebration. The Blue Connection, part of the MAC from the beginning, honors a decade of customers who have enjoyed art purchased at Blue Connection. At Gallery 510, Glenda Sue Goodpaster presents her paintings and pastels in a show entitled “A Moment in Time.”
Second, it’s our Diamonds & Denim Fundraising Gala on Saturday, August 16, 6-9 pm! Because this is the MAC’s 10th (diamond) anniversary, you’re invited to break out your brightest bling and jazziest jeans for this casual but classy evening. Tickets are $75 per person. We’re serving up amazing food (brought to you by Chef Brian, Aramark at Millikin) and drinks (including a signature cocktail sold in a commemorative mason jar) from the street to every floor of the building. The building will be filled with entertainment throughout the evening, ranging from solo piano to a bluegrass combo, the Decatur Municipal Band to an a cappella vocal group, all topped off by IMPROV performers for a good laugh and fun arts demonstrations, including a speed painter and custom jewelry/clothing designer. You’ll have a chance to bid on 10 unique arts-related silent auction items and two high-end live auction packages to benefit the MAC. The Madden Arts Center is a lively place in the heart of our city dedicated to supporting the arts in our community with space and resources for events, exhibits, and classes. Come celebrate this wonderful building and learn how it became the place the arts call home.

Doing Decatur Celebration – On a Stick! Look out, Macon County – not only is Decatur Celebration taking over downtown, but Celebration staffers have commandeered Food Dude. (Actually, truth be told, they lulled him into a food coma with too many corn dogs, but that’s another story.) Can’t go to Decatur Celebration (or any festival for that matter) without partaking of that everyman’s go-to classic… food on a stick. So to heat things up for the Hot Summer Nights coming with Celebration, the team shares their favorites – because everything’s better on a stick!
And because you can never have too much food on a stick, try these tasty tempters, too: Shrimp on a Stick, Chicken on a Stick and Pizza on a Stick! (Editor’s note: And for something different yet not on a stick, two words: Bacon donut. BACON donut.)

Keepers Abound at Finders Flea Market Written by Beth DeBouck | Photos by Sarah Jane It’s not your typical flea market, says Joy Snow, organizer of Finders Flea Market in Mt. Zion. So if you’re expecting a lot of used-up old sofas, clothing or “80s tube socks” – you’d be better off heading to the neighbor’s garage sale. Joy has spent 15 years as an event planner, and after visiting other large flea and antique markets in Illinois, she noticed that there wasn’t anything comparable in Macon County. Having already worked with the Mt. Zion Lions Center through other events she’s organized, Joy decided to carry over that relationship when considering the market’s location. Not to mention that the property also offers plenty of space for future growth, which is exactly what she’s intending. This is Finders Flea Market’s first year. The market takes place the last Saturday of the month from May-October, 9 am-3 pm. The number of vendors is now over 50. What’s really amazing is that Joy single-handedly got the word out about the market – 14 | August 2014
whether personally contacting vendors or using Facebook to draw in the crowds. Items for sale range from antique up-cycled furniture to hand-crafted metal, jewelry and glassware to gluten-free baked goods and fresh produce. Vendors are coming from as far away as Jacksonville, Bloomington, Danville and even St. Louis. Joy knows some vendors craft their wares out of the home and only have means to sell through online outlets like Etsy. She wants the market to be able to showcase all of the talented artists, crafters, refurbishers and pickers who’ve signed up. “I have been blessed to learn there’s some amazing talent,” says Joy. “Most are making a nominal profit and do it because they love it. I’m very thankful to work with these people.” Not everyone is coming from far away, though. Local vendors are also being represented. Kelly Wingard, owner of Decatur’s Wildflour
Artisan Bakery & Café, brought a collection of antiques, furniture and crafts from The Root Cellar (located in the basement of Wildflour). She says Wildflour actually started as a stall at a farmer’s market before opening years later at its downtown location on Main Street. “The exposure in the community has been great,” says Kelly, explaining many Wildflour customers weren’t aware there’s an antique store on the bottom level. While some vendors are exposing their business and talents to the community, other vendors are letting themselves be exposed to a new community. Kyle Looby’s “recycled vintage and found object jewelry” can be admired in two Springfield locations: Studio on 6th and Tossed and Found. Having joined in June, she’ll also be setting up shop at Decatur’s Arts in the Park in September.

Finders Flea Market continued from page 15 The process of making jewelry serves as a creative outlet for Kyle, who also works for the Illinois Department of Transportation. After being inspired by jewelry she saw on a vacation, Kyle fell in love with the idea of taking materials that aren’t typically meant to be jewelry (foreign coins, keys, fabric, typewriter buttons) and turning them into bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pins, hair clips and rings. She credited her grandfather, who was an avid antique collector, as the reason for her interest in “old things.”
If you, too, have a love for the old, make sure to follow Finders Flea Market through its Facebook page. They regularly post vendor spotlights that include photos of potential finds you could see at the next market. Admission is free, too, but make sure to have cash on hand. Some vendors, but not all, are capable of taking credit cards.
It might be odd to say that walking around Finders Flea Market causes you to start waxing philosophical about what draws people to flea markets. But it’s not just the items that have stories – the people do, too. Savor Small Town Life at the Blue Mound Fall Festival Written by Rachel Peabody
If you could bottle small town Americana community spirit, it would look something like a community festival—the defining weekend of every small town's annual calendar. It's the type of stuff John Mellencamp wrote about and the type of small town entertainment many Macon County residents were raised on. It's a welcome home for many, and the Blue Mound Fall Festival invites you to come join in on the community spirit August 7-9. Come on In “It’s our long time tradition; it’s a class reunion to some; it brings families together, but most of all, it brings home everyone who at some

point in their life has called Blue Mound home,” says Diana Ritter, co-president of this year’s event along with her husband, Tom. The three-day event is a celebration not to be missed by local residents, and there is certainly more than enough entertainment to make it worth the drive for out-of-towners. Complete with a
carnival, a parade, live entertainment, great local eats and a church service on Sunday, the fall festival has an activity to appeal to just about everyone. This year’s event theme is “Come Fly With Me”, paying homage to the 2014 parade marshals, Jim and Joyce McCoy, who are long-time local residents and supporters who also happen to be plane enthusiasts. Located in the convenient location of Wise Park, just one block off of Route 48, its location makes stopping at the Festival ideal for those just passing through. There’s no charge to park or enter, so just come on in and check it out. Catch a Show Live entertainment and a variety of contests give the Fall Festival a little flair. “We have some great acts this year,” says Diane. “We started planning as far back as Continued on page 32

January.” On Thursday night, catch the prince & princess pageant, and on Friday, the West End Boogie Project will be the star attraction with R&B classics and hits from the ’50s and ’60s. And if you haven’t caught a Scott Wattles and the Blue Suede Crew performance yet this summer, you have your golden opportunity on Saturday evening. Rock n’ roll in a small town setting as they play Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison hits, to name a few. The second half of their act is dedicated to Elvis Presley and will leave you saying, “Thank you, thank you very much.” Grab a Bite Who doesn’t love some down-home, small-town food and hospitality? At the Blue Mound Fall Festival, you won’t want to miss the Friday night pork chop dinner or the Saturday night fried chicken special. And according to Diane, several local organizations have specialties that they serve up every year. “Our Rotary has a great walleye sandwich; the Lions Club is known for rib eyes, and the local churches serve lemonade shakeups and ice cream,” she says. “It’s something a lot of our event-goers look forward to.”
Experience the Tradition “For many people, coming to the fall festival is like coming home,” says Diane. “If you’re new to the event, come check us out. Blue Mound has that welcoming small town feel, and we’re a close-knit, family-focused community.” This year marks the 104th anniversary of the event, and Diane believes it’s the tradition of the event itself that keeps bringing generations of families back together the second weekend in August. As you could imagine, the fall festival is a favorite family tradition for the Ritter family, who has been involved with the event for years. “It’s a homecoming for many families,” she says. “I enjoy seeing children of all ages coming home for the festival, whether you’re 1 or 100.”
