Brought to you by the letter P. I’m not supposed to say that, but has anyone noticed a sort of phabulous quality about this issue? Precisely, it’s purportedly provided by that purveyor of puns, Mr. P! Paddleboarders are making waves on Lake Decatur and Clinton Lake – all you need is a board because you’re the motor! Also spotted on Lake Decatur’s lovely shores: Pizza (garden) planting, as the Children’s Garden knows that the way to kids’ hearts and their brains is through their stomachs! Pageants are the latest jewel in Decatur Celebration’s crown as Miss Macon County takes center stage this year. Photogs galore gather in one of the area’s most enlightening organizations. And Pho sho, hit the Golden Bowl for noodles that knock your socks off. So peeps, pep up – July brings a proliferation of pleasure for all palates and paths!

SPOTLIGHT

Photography Group Focuses on Snapshots of Success Whether you’re already a professional shutterbug or have dreams of joining the ranks, there’s a local group you should know about. Central Illinois Professional Photographers unites those who believe the perfect shot is just a snap away. The group meets bimonthly with a goal of building a community of photographers sharing education, insight and developing the craft. “Networking is a big part of it, getting to know each other,” says club president and co-founder Sarah Jane Shorthose of Sarah Jane Photography LLC. “And we’re also focused on growth, holding photography competitions internally, having speakers and holding live shoots.” Education has been a huge part of the group from the start, focusing on learning from each other and from experts outside their circle. The next meeting will feature a photographer from Bloomington who shoots 43 weddings a year (“insane to me,” Sarah comments as a reference to the sheer workload the photog manages). She’s going to talk about her tricks for managing that huge number of shoots. Other meetings have focused on the holistic aspects of self-employment—these are, after all, businesses looking for growth. Topics have included online marketing, search engine optimization, web site setup, branding, accounting, law and business metrics. Several times a year the group holds live shoots, member-led sessions where they shadow a peer

to learn their technique. “You shoot right along with them just like on a session and learn techniques, posing, how they do it and why,” says Sarah. “Even if there are a ton of us there, we’re all doing it differently; we all shoot differently.”

Likewise, internal photography competitions help them prepare for regional and national competitions, sharing ideas on adapting to judging and critiquing and knowing what judges are looking for. Above all, it’s all about helping each other grow and learn. “Last year at one meeting we photographed each other to get new head shots,” says Sarah. “It was fun to see how everyone shoots and why they do what they do—we learned, and we walked away with free images. We’re already planning that one again for this year.” As the photographers grow, so does the group, more than tripling in size in just a few years. They’re looking to keep that trend continuing, welcoming any legally working professional photographer to join them. In addition to having full info about the group, the web site offers a great way to find photographers for any uses. “Part of the goal was to create a space where not just photographers but anyone in the area could search out local photography and find info,” says Sarah. Like photography itself, the club is all about connections, with earth, land and person. Says Sarah: “We’ve got people who come just for the shoot or just for the education or come for it all!”

ART SPEAK

Don't Be Boring It’s hard for adults, who can’t find enough hours in the day to get everything done, to remember the excitement of freedom from school and the dread of boredom that summer break brings to kids. My standard response to any cries I hear of “I’m bored!” is a quote from lecturer Leo Buscaglia, "If you are bored, you are boring.” Certainly, if you just sit on your sofa waiting for the world to walk in your door and drag you out into some fun, you’re bound to have a long, boring summer. Kids may feel like they should run screaming from any summer activity where they might “learn” something, but I’ve always felt that nothing can truly be “fun” unless it challenges me physically and/or mentally. That idea is particularly true with all there is for kids to do in Decatur in the summertime. Many of you have already found great summer activities that combine fun and learning. How else would Scovill Zoo be having record attendance numbers this year? I hope your kids are also exploring one of the great summer camps around town. One of the most ambitious is the Summer Camp Connections program. The primary partners of this program are Decatur Public Schools and the Decatur Park District. Campus Connections provides an alternative to summer school and creates a great opportunity for kids to exercise their minds and

by Jerry Johnson

bodies in a summer camp environment through fun, interactive lessons. The kids gather each day at a base camp and then travel for an adventure somewhere else in the city. This is a great program because it partners with an amazing collection of community organizations, like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boy and Girl Scouts, Children’s Museum of Illinois, Decatur Public Library, Macon County Conservation District, Millikin University, Richland Community College, YMCA and more. (I’m sorry that I couldn’t list all of the groups.) As part of this summer program, the Decatur Area Arts Council hosts several days of arts activities at the Madden Arts Center. The kids learn about design and color theory and famous artists, tour the Anne Lloyd Gallery and create their own art. These arts experiences not only send them home with artwork they can be proud of but also give them ideas and tools to create future works of art on their own. Beyond the Camp Connections program, all of the organizations I mentioned (and more), including the Decatur Area Arts Council, offer terrific summer camp programs throughout the summer. Check out the websites or give a quick phone call and ask a few questions. Once you realize that you’re as bored as you want to be, all you have to do is look around to find fun, interesting summer experiences right here in Decatur.

Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening. 10 | July 2014

As soon as we caught wind that one of our many talented writers we work with at Thrive had landed a gig with the creatives over in the Millikin Marketing Department, we set out to hook her up with some branded goodies. You know, for a proper congratulations and to help get her fully integrated! The notebook was sort of a gimme considering the nature of her work, however, it took awhile to narrow the tshirt selection down to just one. I was surprised at how many designs jumped out at me, but we settled on this distressed, vintage-style t-shirt. It's a super-soft polyester/cotton/rayon blend that has a little bit of a heather texture in the fabric. I have my eye on a fleece for myself and will be back for more shopping! July 2014 | 11

THE FOOD DUDE

by T. F. DUDE

Hello, is it Pho you’re looking for?

I believe Lionel Richie sang it best: Hello, is it pho you’re looking for? But if you aren’t into cheesy ’80s ballads, let’s stop right here, ’cause this review reads a lot like a love confession. In fact, maybe mix tapes are the way to go when expressing my feelings for Pho Golden Bowl and their pho noodle soup: flavorful beef broth, tender rice noodles, large pieces of meat and all those fresh herbs, onions, bean sprouts, peppers and a lime wedge.

for your own garnishes. If you’re a newbie, I suggest once you get your giant bowl of broth, meat and onions, you then start flavoring it with the parsley and basil. Throw in a handful of bean sprouts (I love the crunchy texture it adds); pop in the peppers if you want it spicy; squeeze in some lime juice; and finally, squirt a few drops of hoisin (sweet) and/or sriracha (spicy) sauce into the mix. Stir with chopsticks, and re-garnish as needed.

If you haven’t heard of Golden Bowl, you may have at least passed it on your way into Fuji since they’re almost side by side. It’s true that part of me has been dyin’ to spread the word about this authentic Vietnamese noodle house for ages, but the other part of me is afraid to share. That’s strange, right? I’m the Food Dude. When I find good food, I should immediately broadcast it from the rooftops. So why am I hoardin’ this place, you ask? It’s because Golden Bowl is perfect the way it is. The atmosphere is low-key; the staff is friendly, but they do not hover; and prices are cheap.

I should mention “pho” is pronounced more like the “fa” in father, but, eh, I always order by number. Golden Bowl serves 12 varieties of pho noodle soup that include rare, medium or welldone beef, flank steak, tripe, tendon, chicken or shrimp. My personal recommendation is the #24 ($7.99), which comes with brisket and rare steak. Also, try an order of the crispy spring rolls (2 for $3.95). They offer other noodle, rice and vegetarian dishes, too. For drinks, there are the usual sodas, but they also have tea, coffee, milk or fruit-based Vietnamese drinks, and awesome fruit smoothies. Pho sure.

But I am ready to become a Golden Bowl pusher. I eat there at least once a week, either dine-in or carry-out (the wait is only 5-10 minutes). What I love most about this place is the consistency. Every time I order the #24, the taste is the same. If I order carry-out, the heat of the broth will cook the rare meat. Either in the restaurant or out – there’s also a DIY element. Making Waves Making Friends Written by Rachel Peabody | Photos by Sarah Jane There’s a new way to catch a wave this summer. Paddleboarding is gaining popularity in places where you would least expect while bringing a favorite coastal pastime to the beaches of Lake Decatur. Paddleboarding might not be your typical water sport for the Central Illinois crowd, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t found its niche with a few local enthusiasts. And where there’s a ripple, there’s sure to be a wave. Abi and Aaron McIntosh of Clinton first discovered the sport while visiting family in Florida. “We paddleboarded in the bay and

14 | July 2014

were immediately hooked,” says Abi. “The water was calm and reminded us of a lake, which made us think why not do this at home?” The McIntoshes headed home from that vacation with a paddleboard in tow. They have been enjoying the sport for the last two years on Clinton Lake and are hoping to expand to Lake Decatur soon. And like all good stories in the age of social media, Abi and a friend, Tara Drake, both discovered their mutual interest in paddleboarding through a Facebook post.

“From there we had the idea to build an online local community, Paddle Boarding Central Illinois, to bring people together,” says Tara. The goal for the page is to help market paddleboarding to the local area and to encourage both veterans and newcomers to join in on the local action.

The online community is already gaining attention from enthusiasts like Sarah Mathis, who lives on Lake Decatur and has been paddleboarding for the last year. Sarah has now met Abi and Tara and is looking forward to future paddleboarding opportunities on Lake Decatur.

Paddleboarding as a Pastime “Paddleboarding is such a versatile water sport. You can do it for sport, speed, relaxation, recreation and even yoga,” says Sarah. “There’s something relaxing about doing it in the early morning and in the evenings when the water is calm and when the blue heron are out on the water.” Tara agrees and believes paddleboarding is great for the mind, body and soul. “I smile the whole time,” she says, “And it’s an incredible workout that really works your core.” For Abi, paddleboarding is just one more way her family can enjoy the outdoors together. “My husband and I both enjoy paddleboarding, and our kids like to ride along on the front of our board,” she says. “You really get to experience wildlife and nature when you’re on a board and without a motor to scare everything off.” All ages and all fitness levels can paddleboard, but like with any sport, it just takes time and practice to fully master.

continued on page 16

Paddleboarding continued from page 15

Try It On for Size To start paddleboarding, there’s an investment, and a new board and paddle will cost you at least $500. But don’t let the price scare you off – the Paddle Boarding Central Illinois crew offers those who are interested the chance to try their boards on for size to see if the sport is a good fit for them.

The group recommends T.J. Maxx and Scheels as local retailers who have the equipment you need to get started. Most boards are made of fiberglass or bamboo, and men and women can share the same board as long as they are similar in size and height.

It’s a great sport to share with your friends, so definitely invite them to the party. Children’s Museum P lants Pizza Written by Joli A Hohenstein | Photos by Elizabeth Highcock How’d you like to grow your own pizza? More than 40 kids planted the seeds thanks to the Children’s Museum of Illinois’ Family Science Sunday series. Held the second Sunday of each month, the summer series in June, July and August focuses on teaching kids where their food comes from, from seed to shelf. What better way to engage kids than through their stomachs and one of their favorite foods? 28 | July 2014

“I think it’s really easy for them to get into the idea because of the nature of the garden... what child isn't familiar with pizza?” says Nicole Bateman, executive director. “It was fun to watch them connect the dots, looking at the tomato plant, seeing photos of the tomatoes, then realizing that the plants will sprout and they can put the items on their pizza.”

Through a partnership with Richland Community College (RCC) and Children’s Museum, kids of all ages will have the opportunity to learn many aspects of production, including soil types, transplanting vs seed planting, how deep to plant and more.

RCC donated all of the plants and seeds to grow the garden, and the two helped kids set the garden at the kickoff. The 15ft. circular garden was planted in slices like a pizza, incorporating favorite ingredients like tomatoes, peppers, onions, spinach, garlic, basil and other herbs.

“Kids enjoyed putting on the colorful gardening gloves, using the tiny trowels and watering with the classic tin watering cans at the kickoff,” said Nicole. From here, they’ll get to keep journals on the garden and track progress in maintenance sessions every Sunday from 2 to 3 pm, when they can help weed and water.

In addition to the weekly maintenance sessions, Family Science Sunday events will keep things growing. The July 13 session will focus on irrigation and watering, with water games and other fun (be prepared to get wet!). Then the August 10 session will wrap everything up with a bountiful harvest, followed by kids taking the spoils up to the Museum kitchen and using their favorite fresh veggies to top free Mini Murph take-n-bake pizzas from Papa Murphy’s.

RCC’s Jill Feinstein, also a Museum board member, and David McLaughlin, professor of horticulture and agribusiness/ horticulture program director, were instrumental in launching the program.

Pizza Garden continued FROM PAGE 29

“Family Science Sundays, and the pizza garden specifically, are a great opportunity to teach kids where their food comes from,” says Nicole. “Family gardens aren’t as common as they used to be, and community partnerships like these help us keep kids connected to that aspect of education.” The Pizza Garden series also paves the way for some exciting new displays sprouting up at the Museum late this year, when they add their first full-scale exhibit on agriculture. Features include a large red barn, straw bale maze, planting field, fruit and vegetable garden, transportation hub and a loading dock to take the crops to the grocery store.

Get There Children’s Museum of Illinois Pizza Garden Maintenance Sundays 2 to 3 pm

“Kids will learn how cottonseed transforms to t-shirts, how a gallon of milk gets from the cow to the fridge,” Nicole explains.

Family Science Sundays 2nd Sunday of the month 2 to 4 pm (July 13 & Aug 10)

Like everything at the Children’s Museum, the ag exhibit and Pizza Garden are rooted in fun. As Nicole says, “Kids learn through play, so if it’s super fun but they’re learning, then we’re doing our job.”

423-5437

All of the Pizza Garden and Family Science Sunday activities are free with paid admission—it’s just one of the many perks the Museum provides for its littlest fans. No pre-registration is required, and you can come for all or part of any session. 30 | July 2014

Free with paid admission www.cmofil.org or find them on Facebook! Editor’s note: They’re just over halfway toward their goal for full development of the agriculture exhibit. Contact the Museum today if you or your business wants to contribute.

Decatur Celebration Adds a New Jewel to Its Crown Miss Macon County Queen Pageant Joins Lineup By Heather Meadows For 29 years and counting, the first weekend in August kicks off the Decatur Celebration, which gives this community four days of delectable calorie-packed food, ice cold beverages, live music from every genre, thrilling rides and hours of endless entertainment. There is something for all ages and it never disappoints. This year’s theme is “Hot Summer Nights,” and as if the Decatur Celebration wasn’t fabulous enough already, they’ve added an event this year: a pageant! Mark your calendars for August 3, and come show support for girls of all ages from our community in the first-ever Miss Macon County Queen Pageant at the Decatur Celebration. Pageant Director Melissa Muirheid is a certified judge for the Miss America program in Illinois, Iowa and Indiana and has judged pageants in all three states. Plus, she has been a pageant director for 17 years with the Macon County Fair. Since the Macon County Fair wasn’t hosting a pageant this year, she was in search of another venue. The Decatur Celebration seemed like a perfect fit. When she met with Lori Sturgill, director of the Decatur Celebration, her immediate response was, “Yes! We would love to have you!” The pageant is an ideal way for young women to gain valuable skills such as public speaking, interviewing and the ability to feel at ease in front of an audience. In addition to the sash, crown and trophy, the crowned queen will receive scholarship money and prizes donated by local businesses. Girls compete in three age divisions. Miss Macon County Queen is ages 17-22, and Macon County Junior Miss is ages 11-16. A Macon County Princess division is for girls ages 5-10. Keep in mind that in the Princess division, everyone wins. It is not a competition. There is no limit as to how many girls can compete. The crowned queen will be expected to return to the 2015 Decatur Celebration as the official hostess. The Board of Directors has designed ways in which she can be involved throughout Macon County and the state of Illinois throughout the coming year and with next year’s Celebration, such as speaking engagements, Kids' Block and parade attendance, to name a few.

Miss Macon County will have a four-minute private interview with the judges. On stage, she will be expected to introduce herself and prepare, memorize and deliver a 1-minute speech on her topic choice. There is also an evening gown competition and a fitness wear competition. All paperwork, entry fees and forms must be submitted by the deadline of Monday, July 21. Rules, the contract, entry form and all expectations can be found at decaturcelebration.com/pageants or by calling Pageant Director Melissa Muirheid at 763-6393. The pageant begins at 2 pm at the Civic Center Arena. Doors open at noon. Tickets are $7 at the door, and children under the age of 5 are free. Let’s cheer on the young women in our community and ensure continued Miss Macon County pageants!
