SPOTLIGHT

by Joli A. Hohenstein

History & Hauntings at the Haunted America Conference History and hauntings are highlighted in Decatur once again during the 18th annual Haunted America Conference, June 20 and 21, at the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. This year’s conference has a historical theme. “Everything’s based in history… military ghosts, haunted White House, history of death culture in America, the art of scrying,” says host and renowned paranormal author Troy Taylor. He’ll even be doing a presentation based on his latest book, Fear the Reaper, which highlights rural and farm ghost stories and murders, stemming from a story he heard growing up in Moweaqua about a farmer who cut his wife’s throat and then his own. As Troy knows, we’re in an area ripe for hauntings and history—he calls Decatur one of the Midwest’s most haunted cities—and this year’s conference intends to explore both. Haunted workshops, ghost tours, late-night investigations, workshops on ghost hunting, presentations on paranormal phenomena and more are on the agenda. At press time, a few tickets still remained for the event’s showcase of after-hours events, including a Haunted Decatur Ghost & Crime Tour and a 1916 ghost tour and ghost hunt at the Lincoln Theater, both with no lights! This is America’s original ghost conference and still one of the most popular, drawing visitors from across the country to explore the unknown and share stories of the supernatural. Popular features like the Monster Panel will return, along with new events like the Haunted America Masquerade Ball. “It’s historically themed, so we’ve asked for no vampires or werewolves, but you could see dead Amelia Earhart or zombie Abe Lincoln,” says Troy. Workshops and seminars run the gamut of ghost hunting and include the rise of the dead in American history, postmortem photographs & American funeral customs, scrying and

necromantium sessions, ghosts and legends of American battlefields, the haunting of the presidents, murder out yonder, American monsters and more. A popular raffle gives attendees the chance to win a host of items hearkening to hauntings and the afterlife. Past prizes have included the old black Haunted Decatur tour bus and a coffin from the 1910s. An embalming table is on the list for this year, along with other surprises. It’s your chance to experience the spirits, scandals and sins of Decatur up close! Admission for the Haunted America Conference is $50 in advance or $65 at the door—but THRIVE readers can bring a copy of THRIVE to the door and still get the $50 pre-show rate!

ART SPEAK

by Sue Powell

To experience these differences, come celebrate Native American Arts: Splendid Heritage on exhibit for the annual June and July International Arts Experience at the Madden Arts Center. Pieced together from a number of private collections, this exhibit honors the creativity and expression within native pottery, basketry, textiles, kachinas, headdresses, jewelry and more. Through the beauty of the colors, designs, symbolism and materials, you’ll get a glimpse into the beauty of Native American cultures. The free opening event on Friday, June 6, from 5 to 7:30 pm weaves native storytelling, flute, dance, drums, cuisine and hands-on crafts into the experience. Decatur Area Arts Council presents native performers Jo and Jim Lakota with The Spirit of the Rainbow Singers, an audience participation program partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency. Bring the family, and see why native arts enjoy worldwide interest and admiration! That’s only the beginning of what could be a great summer adventure, though, if you’ll just venture out across the state of Illinois and into surrounding states. On Thursday, June 19, from 7 to 10 pm, Blues in Central Park features a free concert by Indigenous, an award-winning blues rock band whose musicians hail from the Nakota Nation.

Deep American Roots As 21st Century Americans, we all benefit from the splendid heritage of this country’s Native American cultures of the past and present. I use “cultures” plural because the differences in traditions, languages and arts among tribes are as distinct as differences among countries around the world. Hundreds of native tribes have contributed to modern day life. They’ve introduced cuisine like squash, wild rice and turkey. They’ve shared poetic philosophies and the importance of a harmonious connection to nature. They’ve influenced contemporary design and architecture through centuries of exquisite geometric patterns in beadwork and on pottery. It’s an amazing heritage!

Check out the Eiteljorg Native American Museum in Indianapolis and its one-of-a-kind Indian Market and Festival on June 21 and 22 or the Tecumseh Lodge Powwow in Tipton, Indiana, on August 30 and 31. Over the July 3 to 6 weekend, slip over to Danville, Indiana, for the National Powwow. Visit the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian in Evanston, Illinois, any time or catch the 20th Annual Contemporary Indian Art Show at Cahokia Mounds in Collinsville, Illinois, on July 12. Wrap up the season with an outing to Milwaukee’s Lakefront for the Indian Summer Festival, September 5 to 7. In the words of an old Sioux Indian saying: “With all things and in all things, we are relatives.” Get to know your “relatives” this summer! Connect with deep American roots by exploring Native American cultures both here in Decatur and within a nearby driving distance.

Sue Powell is the Gallery Director for the Decatur Area Arts Council. When not hanging at gallery shows, you might catch her on stage! 10 | June 2014

OK, it's true, we just talked about Pickleball in our May issue, but I've caught the bug. The sport hasn't historically been much of a big deal here in Decatur, so finding supplies has been tricky. The day I heard Play It Again Sports had stocked some paddles and balls I made a beeline for their shop. This model may seem a bit pricey but I've played with a similar graphite paddle and knew I would like owning one of my own. You can grab beginner paddles for around $15, and there's also a startup kit with two paddles and a ball that was reasonably priced if you're looking to give the sport a try. If you'd like to pick up a game, check in at facebook.com/DecaturPickleball. June 2014 | 11

THE FOOD DUDE

Froyo Throwdown

by T. F. DUDE

Side note: Did you know Cocomero means "watermelon" in Italian? Not sure of the connection to froyo but a cool name nonetheless. Coolest décor, too – Deco contemporary, plus a cool kids’ playhouse area. Not to be outdone, Krave has an entire wall you can write on, so the younger yogurt eaters will be entertained while you lick your spoons.

The results are in on the first-ever THRIVE Froyo Throwdown, and it’s clear: The spoons have it. Krave’s spoons, that is! Have you seen the coolness of the eating utensils at the Mt. Zion frozen yogurt mecca? They change color when they hit the yogurt! So blue turns purple, pink turns purple, and yellow turns orange or green. The verdict from me and my posse: so cool they’re hot!

CherryBerry was tops for its Cookie Monster, fabulous chocolate-leading confection infused with Oreo-like cookies. The Sea Salt Caramel Pretzel won raves, too. Insider tip: Top with crumbled waffle cone for a fabulous cone/cup hybrid treat. The menu also boasts at varying times non fat, low fat, no sugar added, dairy free and Greek frozen yogurt options. The posse panel reports the chocolate choices at all three contenders were tops – their tastebuds were in love at each stop. Chocolate Peanut Butter at Krave was a standout for some, especially with the right chocolate toppings.

If one thing’s clear—or cool—from our Throwdown, it’s that whichever of the three you Now on to the (really) good stuff: We hit three choose, you’re in for a treat! of Decatur’s popular frozen yogurt joints for a frozen faceoff. Each offers a similar setup: Giant cups, a wall of serve-yourself flavors and Get There cup dividers in case you’re not the crazy flavor mixing type (like moi). Pay is by the ounce, so Krave Frozen Yogurt make it count. Toppings abound at each (70 at Krave, 50 at CherryBerry, 35 at Cocomero), and so does tastiness. Flavors rotate, sometimes weekly, sometimes more or less often. Our panel was hard-pressed to pick a winner, with flavor favorites varying among the crowd. One proclaimed Krave’s Salted Caramel Corn the best ever. Cookies & Cream was a crowd favorite, too, especially when paired with the cookie dough ball toppings at Cocomero.

K9 Crew performs its acrobatic routines all over the country, and this year it’s landing at Woofstock, Homeward Bound pet shelter’s annual fundraising event. Tony, who calls himself “ an avid dog lover and a stickler for positive reinforcement,” takes the crew to new heights of both entertainment and competition. They’re winning championships and wowing crowds everywhere. Don’t miss this world-class canine thrill show featuring flying disc dogs, extreme high jumping, agility racing, canine comedy and trick dogs. You’ll have three opportunities to see them: 9:45 am, 11:45 am and 1:45 pm.

In fact, fashionistas have plenty of options at Woofstock. A huge fair will showcase wares for both pooches and their humans. You’ll find pet-related products like natural dog treats, collars, leashes and clothes plus items like jewelry and clothing for owners who want to proclaim their love. You and your canine can also show your support for Homeward Bound and Macon Resources with t-shirts and bandanas.

When you come down from the K9 Crew high, don’t miss Woofstock’s full slate of popular activities, nearly all indoors for the first time. The Pooch Parade gives stylish canines the chance to strut their stuff, dressed up or au natural. “As part of the parade we also recognize a shelter or rescue dog, so that’s always special,” says Amy. As many as 100 dogs participate, and at the end, judges award the best dressed pooch. A microchipping booth helps keep pooches close to home where they belong. “Lately we’ve seen a lot of dogs lost—for safety, we encourage people to have their dogs microchipped,” says Amy. It’s just $20 during Woofstock, and the entire amount goes back to Homeward Bound.

It’s a day that’s doggone good for humans and pooches alike, typically drawing 700 humans and 400 pooches to raise as much as $10,000 for Homeward Bound Pet Shelter. In addition to sheltering and rehabilitating both dogs and cats, as a division of Macon Resources Homeward Bound serves as a great job training program for people with disabilities.

Sometimes the small towns have the biggest sense of pride for the place they live. Just look at the name of the group putting on this summer’s Maroa Freedom Festival: Fall in Love with Maroa. The festival, which takes place on Saturday, June 28 (with events on the previous night as well), will feature all kinds of wonderful family-friendly activities like a biscuits ‘n gravy breakfast, pork chop dinner, parade, Color Run, baseball games, dunk tank, cake walks, bags tournament and fireworks.

From seed to market, you can’t get fresher.

THRIVE Saturday Market AD 2014.indd 1

5/2/14 10:30 AM

It’s everything you’d expect from a Fourth of July celebration, but it’s conveniently held the weekend before so as not to interfere with other scheduled fireworks. The festival itself is free to attend, and the majority of events will take place in the vicinity of Maroa’s City Hall. One of the event coordinators, Rhonda Braden, reminds everyone that the event is not Maroa-resident exclusive. “Everyone is welcome to attend,” she says. Rhonda is part of the Fall in Love with Maroa organization, and she says the group is working hard to spruce up the city.

“Some of the main goals are a welcome entry sign and landscaping around the entrances to Maroa,” says Rhonda. “We are also working toward a Splash Pad in our lovely Spencer Park. We have a great group of locals who want to see Maroa grow and beautify it on the way.” On the 27th, a couple of pre-fest festivities will be held at Spencer Park. Both begin at 7 pm and include a Fun Run, where tractors, bikes, golf carts, and other modes of transportation can race against each other, and a Prince/Princess Contest. continued ON page 30

Freedom Festival continued FROM PAGE 29

Saturday’s first event, the biscuits ‘n gravy breakfast ($5 full/$3.50 half ) sponsored by the Maroa Youth League, will be followed by a Color Run at 8 am. You can pre-register online for $25 or $30 on the day of the race. If you’re unfamiliar with a Color Run, it’s a 5K race where runners are showered with colored powder at stations located along the route. In this case, it will be members of the Maroa-Forsyth High School sports teams painting you with all the colors of the rainbow as you run past, and, yes, it is suggested that you wear white! At 9 am, the youth league is sponsoring a Pony League boys' tournament on the north diamond; there will be a freshmen girls’ tournament on the south diamond beginning at 11 am. The parade, which also begins at 11 am, will follow a route that starts at the high school, heads down Washington to Oak, ends at the library, and then returns to the school. After the parade, there will be an ice cream social sponsored by the Maroa Lions' Club at noon, and local vendors open just in time for lunch. At 3 pm, the Maroa Christian Church will hold a cake walk, and if you are a competitive ‘bags’ player, you can sign up for a bags tournament that will take place behind City Hall. The cost is $20 per team of two. From 5 to 7 pm, the Maroa Masonic Lodge is providing a pork chop dinner that includes a 10 oz. chop, baked beans, potato salad, applesauce, roll, and drink for $9. While you’re feasting on your pork chops and apple sauce, you can mosey over to the other side of the gym for a pie/cake auction. All items up for auction are made by Maroa residents and donated to Fall in Love with Maroa for the event. Um, and did we mention there’ll be bingo?

30 | June 2014

Fireworks are scheduled for “dusk" and in case of inclement weather could be rescheduled for Sunday, but organizers aren’t likely to let something like a tiny storm rain on their parade. “Last year our wonderful fire department managed to get it done even with a little sprinkle,” says Rhonda. And that is the cheerful, optimistic disposition you tend to encounter from the residents of Maroa. Make a Summer Splash with Gallery 510 By Heather Meadows If you’re searching for a fun-filled event that supports our local art community to share with friends and family, then look no further than Summer Splash 2014! Summer Splash originated in 2012 and has since grown larger and more spectacular. This annual event is a fundraiser for Gallery 510, so mark your calendars for Friday, June 20, at 6pm for dancing, live music from The Boat Drunks and an overflowing array of margaritas! Last year 200 tickets were purchased, and the event sold out. 350 tickets are available this year, as well as a larger venue—The Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. So pull those Hawaiian-inspired shirts, cut-off shorts and flip-flops out of the closet, and prepare to be entertained with Jimmy Buffet tunes from The Boat Drunks. Also featured: a silent auction, hors d’ oeuvres, a photo booth with props, a cash bar and more! Tickets are $40 in advance or $350 for a table of 10. Prizes will be awarded to the table deemed “Best Decorated,” so if you’d like to decorate your table, you’re free to do so! Director Barbara Dove is looking forward to the event and is ready to party, luau-style! Barbara recognizes the importance of art in our community and is committed to enabling artists to be seen, providing educational opportunities and raising awareness of the visual fine arts. She explains, “Teachers give their students the tools they need to create art, and Gallery 510 is the catalyst that gives the opportunity to show that art. Students get to see their art hanging in a professional venue. This experience gives confidence, and I am proud to be a part of that.”

The funds raised will allow Gallery 510 to continue inspiring artists and giving them an outlet to showcase. The organization works in collaboration with the Decatur Area Arts Council with competitions and exhibits such as The Young Artists' Showcase, where any 5th-8th grader in Macon County can enter his or her artwork. Arts in Central Park is another public service the two organizations team up to put on and have done so for the past 17 years. The outdoor art fair in Central Park boasts high quality art and activities for children, plus food and music. And October Nationals is a juried art show for professionals that Gallery 510 holds in the Anne Lloyd Gallery at the Madden Arts Center. Purchase Summer Splash tickets at Gallery 510 at 160 East Main Street or reserve with a credit card by calling 422-1504. Food, drink, friends and music by The Boat Drunks…all while supporting the arts! What’s not to love about this event? Last year’s Summer Splash sold out fast, and this year is bigger and better, so call today to purchase your ticket or reserve your table for 10! Barbara is ready for a successful event and ensures, “The Conference Center will have the margaritas ready to go!”

Get There: Summer Splash 2014 June 20, doors open at 6:00pm Decatur Conference Center & Hotel For tickets call Gallery 510 at 422.1509 or email gallery510@sbcglobal.net
