PROVERBS 16:3

thompson drops opening game in overtime thriller against grayson

The Thompson Warriors opened up the 2024 season against one of the top teams in the stateof Georgia as they welcomed in the Grayson Rams on the opening Thursday night of the 2024 high school football season.

Thompson came in as the #2 ranked 7A team in the state in the Alabama Sports Writers Association poll while MaxPreps had Grayson ranked 8 th in Georgia's highest classification after a 1-point loss in their opening week against Collins Hill 20-19.

As the eyes of the nation tuned in to ESPN 2 to see two of the top teams in the country face off with some of the biggest student-athletes in the ESPN 300, football was finally back and the Road to the Super 7 was underway. Grayson took the opening kickoff and steadily marched down the field to go up 7-0. It looked like Thompson was going to get a big stop on that drive after a Jared Smith third down tackle a yard short of the first down marker. Grayson was able to convert on 4 th and short, but a potential fumble and the confusion afterward forced Thompson to use a timeout that wound up being costly later in the half.

That would wind up being the last offensive touchdown scored by either team in regulation. Trent Seaborn and the Thompson offense were able to put together a few drives, unfortunately unable to convert them into points. Seaborn ended the night 17/29 for 121 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Michael Dujon started the game off at running back before leaving the game with an injury, carrying 11 times for 40 yards while Seaborn added another 4 rushes for 16 yards. Angel Jones led all receivers with 3 catches for 40 yards.

The Thompson defense stood strong after that opening drive score, keeping Grayson out of the endzone the rest of regulation time. In the third quarter, the defense came up big as Vini Pires was able to knock the ball loose from a Grayson receiver and right into the hands of Anquon Fegans who returned it for a touchdown. That made the score 7-7 which is where it stayed when the fourth quarter ended.

Thompson did have one last chance to pull out a potential game winning drive after Damonte Tabb grabbed an interception late in the game, but the Warriors weren't able to get closeenough for a field goal.

In overtime, the Warriors got the ball first and it didn't take long as Seaborn completed a perfect 10-yard touchdown pass to Brooks Byars on the first play of the possession. After John Alan McGuire knocked through the extra point, the Warriors had their first lead of the game 14-7. Grayson got the ball next and it took them three plays before they finally punched it in. The Rams decided they were going to try and end the game right there with a two-point conversion. After loading nine lineman in the game and running the wildcat, it proved to be just too much and Grayson converted to win the game 15-14 and hand Thompson their first loss on the season.

Coach Mark Freeman pointed out to media members the similarities to two years ago when Thompson and Buford squared off in Georgia. Buford won that game 38-7 before Thompson then faced Lipscomb Academy and ended up going on to improve throughout the year and win a state championship. They look to do the same thing this season – improve from the loss and continue to get better.

And just like two years ago, they get Lipscomb Academy after a loss to a team from Georgia. This time – the Warriors will travel to Nashville on Thursday, August 29.

As always, you can watch and listen to the game on the Warrior Nation Network as the broadcast will go live on the road at 6:30 pm.

thompson starts strong, holds off Lipscomb Academy for 27-21 win in Nashville

The Warriors hit the road for the first time this season as Thompson traveled to Nashville, TN to take on Lipscomb Academy in a return game after the Mustangs came to Alabaster two years ago and defeated Thompson 24-14 on national television. This time, a 27-21 revenge win for Thompson improved the Warriors to 1-1 as they head into region play. In the opening week, Thompson failed to convert an offensive touchdown in regulation against Grayson, but that wasn't a problem this week as Trent Seaborn led the offense down the field on the opening possession going 7/8 for 83 yards - capped off by a Michael Dujon 1-yard touchdown run.

Early in the second quarter, Lipscomb got their first touchdown on the board to make it 7-7. However, the tie game only lasted a few seconds as Anquon Fegans returned the following kickoff from the 7-yard line all the way to the other side of the field for a touchdown to go back up 13-7 after a failed extra point.

Following a fumble recovery from Seth Green, the Warriors got a short field and drove down with Dujon scoring his second touchdown of the game on an 8-yard reception from Seaborn to go up 20-7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, after trading a few drives, Lipscomb was able to take advantage of a special teams turnover from Thompson and score to make it 20-14. Not long after that, Michael Dujon rattled off his longest run of the season with a 68-yard rushing touchdown to put the Warriors back up 27-14 late in the third.

Lipscomb Academy tried everything they could in the final quarter to bring the game back in their favor, finally scoring on a long drive with 1:53 left to bring it back to 27-20. However, after illegally touching the onside kick, the Warriors got the ball back and after a strong Dujon first down, the Warriors were able to take a knee and leave Nashville with a win.

Michael Dujon ended the game with 127 yards and 2 touchdowns on the ground, returning from injury in game one. He added 4 catches for 12 yards and a receiving touchdown as well. Seaborn ended the game at 19/27 for 163 yards and a touchdown. Seaborn spread the ball around to seven different receivers, including four receivers with at least 4 catches. Trey Knight led all receivers with 4 catches for 47 yards.

On top of the kickoff return for a touchdown and recording his first catch of the season on offense, Anquon Fegans ended the game with 7 tackles (including a tackle for loss). Vini Pires led the defense with 13 tackles while Noah Streeter had the lone sack in the game for the defense. Micah Fleming, Jared Smith and Damonte Tabb also recorded tackles for loss. Thompson begins region play on the road next week against Tuscaloosa County on Friday, September 6 at 7:00 pm.

Thompson starts region play with massive win over Tuscaloosa County

Lunceford | September 8, 2024

Thompson grabbed a huge win this weekend with a 47-7 victory over Tuscaloosa County on the road to open region play. Thompson is looking for it's second region title in a row and 12 th overall and started off with a huge momentum building victory.

In a rain-filled game, mistakes were made by both sides in terms of wet gameplay, but the Warriors were able to start off the game with a drive led by running back Michael Dujon as he helped drive the Warriors down for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Not long after, Dujon rattled off an 85-yard run to open up the game to 14-0, which would end up being enough for the win.

A muffed punt led to Tuscaloosa County getting the ball in the red zone, where they punched it in for their lone touchdown. However, Trent Seaborn, RJ Evans and the whole offense weren't going to be denied as they scored multiple times and the defense came up with big stops to end up 33-7 at the half.

Many new names got into the game to get some valuable experience as the game went on, including freshman Mekhi Billingsley getting on the board with a touchdown and Conner Williams connecting with Brooks Byars for a score as well.

Thompson ended the game with 307 yards rushing and 5 touchdowns on the ground. Leading the way was Dujon with 11 carries for 171 yards and two touchdowns. RJ Evans added 76 yards on 8 carries for two more scores with Billingsley rushing for 48 yards on 8 carries and a touchdown as well. On a wet night, Seaborn finished 4/9 for 53 yards and an interception while Williams ended up 3/5 for 25 yards and a touchdown. Pryce Lewis led six different receivers with 26 yards on a single reception.

On defense, Trent Cheatom and Vini Pires led with 8 tackles a piece and 3 combined tackles for loss. The defense as a whole had 11 tackles for loss, including 2 sacks by Jared Smith and Wesley Gover. 24 different players recorded a tackle in the game with 9 earning a tackle for loss. Cheatom and Nik Alston led the way with 2 each.

John Alan McGuire added a 29-yard long field goal and was perfect on PATs along with 7/8 kickoffs going for touchbacks and one punt for 45 yards.

Next week, Thompson returns to Warrior Stadium to take on Oak Mountain who just lost a heartbreaker to Prattville in their opening game. The Eagles are 2-1 after wins over Briarwood and Pelham to start the season.

As always you can watch the Lowe's Tailgate Show at 6 pm on the THS Athletics Facebook page, then catch the game on the Warrior Nation Network with pregame starting at 6:40!

Warriors dominate second quarter to grab second region win

Jon Lunceford | September 15, 2024

Thompson extended their region record to 2-0 with a 42-7 win over Oak Mountain Friday night behind Trent Seaborn’s four touchdowns. In a game that was moved up an hour due to weather, Thompson’s offense started strong before the rain hit and put the game away early. On the first drive, Seaborn found Pryce Lewis deep to set up the

Warriors in great field position before finally punching it in with Michael Dujon from five yards out.

Thompson’s defense forced a 3-and-out to get the ball back and it wasn’t long at all before it was 14-0. Oak Mountain finally got a drive going after a few costly penalties from the Warrior defense and a nearly intercepted ball found it’s way into an Oak Mountain receiver’s hands for a touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7.

It would be all Thompson after that as Thompson put up 21 unanswered points in the second quarter, and added another score to start the second half to bring the score up to 42-7 as the rain began to pour, and the clock was quickly run out by both teams.

On offense, Seaborn finished the night 11/16 for 195 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. RJ Evans led all rushers with seven carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Michael Dujon added 4 carries for 27 yards and another touchdown. Pryce Lewis was the leading receiver with three catches for 61 yards and a touchdown. Trey Knight, Dedrick Kimbrough and Angel Jones all added touchdowns as well.

Jared Smith led the defense with 8 total tackles, including two tackles for loss with a sack. Cam Pritchett and Zayden Felton also had two tackles for loss, while Wesley Gover, Kevin Davis and Dantwon Fegans found a tackle in the backfield as well.

John Alan McGuire put four of his seven kickoffs through the endzone and averaged 51.2 yards with his punting, including a long of 63 yards. He was also 6/6 in PATs. Next week, Thompson travels to Vestavia Hills as the Rebels just grabbed their first win of the season over Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa, moving them to 1-1 in region play and 1-3 overall.

Three defensive touchdowns lead Warriors to victory over vestavia

| September 22, 2024

It was a fast start for Vestavia and slow start for Thompson as the Warriors began their third region game of the season. However, the Thompson defense was able to score three different times to put the game away late 38-17.

After the Rebels won the toss and elected to defer to the second half, they then kicked a successful onsides kick to start with the ball anyway. Vestavia marched down the field and scored to go up 7-0. After a three-and-out from Thompson, Vestavia drove down again but had to settle for a field goal to go up 10-0.

The Warriors' run game started picking up steam after a Payton Lewis nabbed an interception, with Michael Dujon busting free for a 41-yard touchdown to get the Warriors on the board. The very next Vestavia drive ended in Jared Smith reading a screen pass to perfection and grabbing an interception which he returned for a touchdown to put the Warriors up 14-10 after the first.

Vestavia answered in the second quarter to make the score 17-14 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Vestavia put together a long drive on their first possession that ended with an Anquon Fegans interception to give the ball back to Thompson. Thompson would go on to score 24 unanswered points in the form of a RJ Evans touchdown run, an Anquon Fegans rip and return 94-yards the other direction, a pick-6 from Micah Fleming and a 33-yard field goal from John Alan McGuire as the cherry on top.

Despite being outgained by Vestavia's offense, Thompson's defense ended up with five total turnovers, with three of them going for six points. Thompson's offense only ended up with 33 offensive snaps and 253 total yards, but Dujon had an impressive night with 15 carries for 187 yards, pushing him to 552 yards on the season and seven total touchdowns.

Thompson improves to 4-1 on the season overall and 3-0 in Region 3 play, currently tied for first with Hoover. The team is back at Warrior Stadium on Friday, September 27 as they host unbeaten defending 6A champion Clay-Chalkville in a non-region game.

Thompson s defense stands strong in 1-point overtime Homecoming loss

In yet another rain-soaked game for Thompson this season, defending 6A state champion Clay- Chalkville came in to Warrior Stadium and escaped with a 1-point overtime win 14-13 in a defensive battle.

After taking their opening drive down the field for a touchdown, Clay-Chalkville would be kept out of the endzone for the rest of regulation time. With an over 8-minute opening drive and controlling over 30 minutes on the clock throughout the game, Thompson’s defense stood strong multiple times inside the 10-yard line to keep Clay-Chalkville from scoring any more points.

After a back and forth defensive struggle in the rain throughout the first half, Thompson began the second half with a drive all the way down the field but couldn’t capitalize on the momentum getting stopped inside the red zone to keep the score at 7-0 in favor of Clay. That is when Thompson stood firm on defense, with a goal line stand for four straight downs including a pair of incredible tackles from Anquon Fegans.

That momentum would lead Thompson on their best drive of the night. After the Warriors took over at their own 1-yard line, they ran into a third down backed up on their own endzone before Trent Seaborn used his legs to scramble for a first down. Then Trent’s arm came into play a few plays later with a beautiful 61-yard pass to Darion Moseley to get the Warriors to the 4-yard line where RJ Evans punched it in to tie the game at 7-7 in the fourth quarter.

Clay drove down to Thompson’s 6-yard line before being stopped yet again in a great defensive stand. The offense was able to get the ball all the way down to Clay’s 13 before clock management came into play to set up for the game winning field goal. After a miss, it was off to overtime.

Clay went first in overtime, and after a couple of stops, the Clay offense pulled a trick play that turned into a backyard play that would end up with a questionable touchdown pass that put Clay up 14-7.

It all came down to fourth down for Thompson on their possession before Seaborn found Trey Knight in the end zone for a diving touchdown catch. However, a celebration penalty on the score led to an much longer extra point that veered left and allowed Clay to escape with a 1- point overtime win. This is the second loss like it for Thompson this season after falling to Grayson 15-14 in overtime to open the season.

Seaborn finished 15/23 for 226 yards and a touchdown. RJ Evans led all receivers and rushers with 21 carries for 47 yards and a touchdown while also catching five passes for 93 yards, which earned him player of the game honors.

Thompson drops to 4-2 on the season but remain unbeaten in region play. The Warriors have also still never trailed after four quarters this season. They look to bounce back next week at Warrior Stadium against Hewitt-Trussville as the Huskies sit at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in region play after a 1-point loss to Hoover three weeks ago.
