Campers have asked for it for ages, and fall camping is now officially happening. In a press release dated Aug.28, Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Tom Nevashonoff announced the news. “The public has told us they want more time to explore the great outdoors in many parts of our province and we want to fi nd ways to make that happen,” Minister Nevakshonoff said. “We know that fall can offer beautiful weather and scenery, so we want to give hardy campers an opportunity to extend their camping season.”

The new fall camping has been added on a trail basis in different locations across the

province including Paint Lake Provincial Park.

Service is said to vary by location, and campers should be prepared to bring their own firewood and drinkable water.

Linda Horner, District Park Supervisor for Conversation and Water Stewardship says the fall camping season is great, since many campers have wanted one for years now. She hopes to continue being full service until the end of the season. “I can see it being very weather dependant. Fall is sometimes beautiful, and then snowing the next day. We’ll see how it goes.”

Horner noted because of this announcement she will have to quickly hire some more staff.

“A lot of the staff I have, have gone back to university. They’re going back to school, which

is understandable, so I need to find some more people to work.”

Steve Ashton, MLA for Thompson says this has been a long time coming. “The key message from a lot of people has been that we have really great camping facilities, and the weather is certainly been pretty decent well into September. A lot of people wanted an extension, and that’s what’s going to happen.”

Ashton says Nevashonoff recognized the fact that we do have colder weather in the north, but camping is still a possibility in the fall, which Ashton is happy about.

The main campground will be open until Sept. 20, while the Lakeview campground will stay open until thanksgiving.

CMHA Thompson’s GrafďŹ ti Cover-up Program began as a pilot project in 2007, with the partnership of our employment program, The City of Thompson and Thompson Neighborhood Renewal Corporation. Our goal is to cover up grafďŹ ti around our community free of charge and

to maintain the integrity of the community. Another central goal of the project is creating a supportive environment for people living with mental illnesses and mental health issues in order to build social skills and gain employment experience.

The GrafďŹ ti Cover-up Program is important because according to the “Broken Window Theoryâ€? of

This year has been one of our most successful years. After 7

weeks into the program, our crew has covered up about 110 vandalisms, which is an average of about 3.25 cover-ups per day.

The grafďŹ ti ranges from very large to very small and is usually derogatory and graphic. It appears on private residences, businesses and on city property.

So far, only a small portion of the grafďŹ ti has been retagged.

CMHA Thompson is very excited about this project as it has shown to be a success over 9 years of operation not only for us, but for the community we thrive in. In the future, we hope that the program continues to  ourish in supporting people living with mental health issues and encourages a positive vision of the City of Thompson.

Northern Delights Catering + CafĂŠ has shut their doors before hitting the one year mark of business.

In a status on the businesses facebook page, on Aug. 10, it reads that due to heavy rains in July the storefront experienced  ooding. “The insurance investigation revealed that the water we could see in the store was only a small part of the prob-

The investigation also showed that the damage would likely continue in the event of more rain, excessive snowfall and thaw/ melt.�

For the business partners that would be mean another stage of renovations, even though in August of last year, when the lease was signed, they just started renovations as well.

The ďŹ nal nail in the cofďŹ n the status stated was that the lease was for one year, and would be ďŹ nished at the end of August. “So sadly, we have decid-

ed the only option is for us to close our doors. Thank you all for your support over the last 12 months and we hope that one day another location will become available for us to try again.

We faced so many hurdles getting started, but I know we would have been successful in the long term if we had been able to keep going. This is only because of the warm reception of our customers who encouraged us and made this all worthwhile.�

Adult Craft Offerings happening this fall at theTRCC

BY ROBIN WARK Thompson residents will have the opportunity to get crafty this fall and winter.

John Burrows, the Director of Recreation, Parks and Culture for the City of Thompson, has announced that due to residents’ requests, adult craft offerings have been revived. The programs have been offered in the past, but not for a few years.

“It was prompted by residents asking if we were bringing them back,” Burrows said.

The fi rst program offering will be acrylic arts in late September. The craft classes will be six-week offerings. A variety of other craft classes are being planned.

“We have a great population of artists,” said Burrows, who noted that this is an opportunity for someone to learn something new or hone their skills.

Adult crafts is just one of the programs that will be available to residents this fall and winter. The 23rd Annual Health and

Leisure Mart will be held Sept. 11-12. The event gives recreation, health, cultural, and business groups the chance to promote and take registration for upcoming events and programs.

Different from some other communities, the City of Thompson has various

organizations that provide its recreational activities.

“We provide the facilities for them to hold their events and programs,” Burrows said.

The city does put on day camps and some other programs. For example, two winters ago kayak classes at the Nor-

“That is our aim date to make sure everything is done and completed,” said John Burrows, the Director of Recreation, Parks and Culture for the City of Thompson.

There is the possibility the pool might re-open earlier. The annual maintenance is done around the same time each year.

Burrows said that it has historically been a good time to close the facility and undertake the work. The closure affects the sauna as well as the pool.

Painting, caulking, and other regular maintenance will take place. The majority of this work, which has been planned and budgeted for, is done by regular staff with contractors called in for specific work.

When the Norplex Pool reopens, Burrows said residents will see an improved recreation centre. As well as work on the facility, the City of Thompson has been investing in its staff.

Burrows and they have been hiring more staff and increased training opportunities for staff.

“We have worked with staff to help them upgrade their qualifications,” said Burrows, who noted this will help improve programming and decrease the cancellation of programs.

The Norplex Pool boasts a 25-metre, sixlane pool and big splash waterslide.

“It is fairly well used,” Burrows said. “We do have quite a bit of public swimming.”

As well, the Norplex Pool is utilized for kayak classes, swim lessons, the Thompson Northern Torpedoes (TNT) swim club, learn to swim programs for area schools, and other programs.

As well as recreation, the City of Thompson’s facilities are used to promote health. They are utilized for the Northern Regional Health Association’s outreach programs.

For example, Burrows noted that a flu clinic will be held in the future.

Goodbye summer break

By Molly Gibson Kirby When I was younger I would anxiously wait for July to come to the rescue, so I could hear the final school bell ring, and know that I was on summer break. July used to be so freeing, and such a wonderful month. July meant swimming in the ocean, walking through town with my friends, but most of all July represented a carefree month for me.

Now that I’m all grown up, July represent just another month in the year. I don’t have a summer break from my job now, and I’m not as carefree in July as I used to be. July for me means writing articles, replying to emails, and making the most out of my days off.

Although I loved July to no end, I would get excited for August because that meant back to school shopping.

No matter how excited I was for summer break, I was just as excited to start back in September, as a fresh person, with a fresh perspective.

Going back to school meant new pens and paper, and I’ve always had a thing for stationary. It would also mean new shoes, and some new clothing items. I would pack my book bag weeks before school actually started, and I would pack a lunch days before, and have it in the fridge ready to go.

I’ve always loved school for the social aspect, but mostly for the academic portion. I loved going to a class, and getting the new textbook, and being assigned my first essay.

As the summer holiday comes to an end, it makes me excited to think that so many people are going to school, whether that be elementary school, high school, or post secondary school, and finding their passions.

Since I can remember one of my favourite quotes has been “Do what you love, love what you do.” It’s on the front cover of my notebook for work, and I’m honoured to say that I found my passion and I’m living it at 22 years old.

To all those eager to get back into the classroom I encourage you to listen to your teachers, finish your class work, and enjoy every single second this next year will presents to you. School memories will always be cherished in my heart, and they will be for you too.

Find your passion, chase it, and live it.

Funding increases for non-proďŹ ts

The non-proďŹ t Organization (NPO) strategy is expanding, which will allow for more organizations to receive funding and grow their services in their communities, Minister of Family

announced on Aug. 28.

The announcement has two new components to the NPO strategy which includes “A commitment to provide multi-year, multi-departmental funding agreements to 10 more organizations

that qualiďŹ ed after a public application process, and a plan to expand the strategy to include organizations that receive funding from just one provincial government department,â€? the press release stated.

The Thompson Boys and

Girls Club, the Thompson YWCA, MacDonald Youth Services, and the Thompson Neighbourhood Renewal Corporation will all be receiving funds because of this announcement. “Non-proďŹ t organizations perform valuable

services for thousands of Manitobans in all walks of life including agricultural producers, small businesses, social services, child-care centres and the arts community,� Minister Irvin-Ross said in the Aug.28 press release. “By

making it easier for them to access stable funding and cut through red tape, these organizations can focus on providing important services to meet the needs of helping groups and individuals in Manitoba.�

Small business optimism in the province falls

Every month the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) releases a business barometer. The poll is given to small business owners across the country, and is a random section.

The latest roll was released on Aug. 27, and in a press release it states that small business optimism in

July to 53.8 in August. Elliot Sims, Director of Provincial Affairs for CFIB says this is not good. “This is a steady downward decline that is quite troubling for entrepreneurs and small business owners, but also for the provincial economy as a whole.� This index level is the province’s worst performance since June 2010, and is below

the province’s ďŹ ve year average, which is 63.8, and the national average too, of 56.7. ““It shows that in August Manitoba small business confidence dropped another 4.5 points, making it for an 11 point drop in just two months. We’ve fallen near 65 points, which is the level which should be seen in a community with potential,â€? explained Sims.

Sims says a lot of things impact the business barometer, like the weather, economic trends, and the exchange rate. “The other things that have an impact are government policies.

Right now in Manitoba we have a very uncompetitive small business climate.

Everything from sky high provincial income taxes, other taxes which are high PST, which is 60 per cent

higher than in most of the neighbouring jurisdictions.

As well as the regulatory system that is growing without any clear accountability, and questionable effectiveness.�

With these things impacting the barometer, Sims noted that it makes Manitoba a less attractive place to start a business, or invest and grow an already open business. He says

things need to change. “If we start focusing on some of those issues, reducing the total tax burden, getting the regulatory environment under control, and reducing the growth of red tape, these are things that will make it easier for small businesses to operate.�

The august findings were based on 989 responses.

The wilderness committee wants the lower bird river protected

Premier Greg Selinger may have had a little surprise when 3,600 letters were delivered to his office at the Legislature on Aug. 27, asking for the Lower Bird River in the eastern part of the province be permanently protected from development.

The letters came from the wilderness committee, who in the past has protested about past concerns involving the body of water. In 2013 the committee brought forward their concern with a proposed plan by the mining company TANCO, which would have seen the company drain water contaminated by mine waste from Bernic lake to Lower Bird River.

The committee planned and executed a two-day event called paddling for protection. The event saw nearly 40 people paddle the river last September.

The paddle was to recognize world rivers day,

to also show Manitobans the beauty of the water.

After the event the government withdrew the proposed water drainage project.

The committee has saved all immediate risk to the Lower Bird River, but wants to gain full legislative protection next.

The end goal is for there to be a 17 kilometre long protected area, stretching 1.5 kilometres on each side of the river.

“The more Manitobans learn about the amazing lower Bird River region, the louder the call for protection becomes,” said Eric Reder, Manitoba Campaign Director for the Wilderness Committee.

“We expect the Manitoba government will soon begin taking steps to establish a new protected area on the lower Bird River.”

The next paddle for protection will be this year on Sept. 12.

A bright future ahead for Taylor Ritchie, says coach

BY ROBIN WARK Thompson’s Taylor Ritchie helped the Manitoba Blizzard to their best ever Junior B lacrosse season.

“We had a very good season,” said Ritchie in an interview before the Founders Cup. “We had the best season we have ever had as a team so far.”

The Winnipeg-based team won the national Tier II championship – the Larry Bishop Trophy – at the Founders Cup in Calgary in August.

Before that the Blizzard won the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League’s North Division and lost in the league fi nals to the Saskatchewan SWAT. It was the fi rst time in league history that two nonAlberta teams met in the finals.

“It is no fun losing, but we broke a lot of records for Manitoba … it is the fi rst time we have ever made it that far,” said Ritchie, whose squad avenged that loss with a 9-6 victory to win the Larry Bishop Trophy.

Blizzard head coach Rob Wilson said that the team’s success can be attributed to its chemistry.

“Defi nitely the most tight-knit team I’ve seen in my experience with the game,” Wilson wrote in an email interview.

“Everyone bought into the team goals and realized the potential of the group. Everyone’s devotion to their role, big or small, allowed the team to succeed.”

Before the Founders Cup, Ritchie felt confident about his team’s chances of success.

“We feel good coming into it,” Ritchie said. “We practiced hard. We all know what we got to do.

It all just comes down to execution now and being prepared mentally for the games. I say we can beat any team in this tournament.”

A winger in the winter for the Norman Northstars midget AAA hockey team, the 5-foot-10 and a half, 160-pound 18-year-old helped the Blizzard as a defender.

“Taylor is a naturally athletic kid,” Wilson wrote. “He’s got great feet, runs well, and has a big time compete level. His battle level on loose balls and ability to run the floor tipped the scales in his favour at camp. He’s also very coachable, he’s an active learner, and asks ques-

tions in practice to better his game.”

Wilson sees a positive future in lacrosse for Ritchie as he continues to be exposed to the game at the next level.

“There’s a lot of upside to Taylor’s game,” Wilson wrote. “Coming from a smaller market like Thompson, he had some learning to do in regards to the way we play defense here (which he picked up very well). As I said earlier though he’s a coachable athlete - that’s only going to get better moving forward.”

Ritchie, who suited up this past season for R.D. Parker Collegiate in field lacrosse as well, has certainly made progress in his game.

“It defi nitely feels like I have come a long way.

I’m just kind of just real-

izing that now that I’m in Calgary,” Ritchie said in reference to being at the Founders Cup. The Blizzard are the lone Manitoba entry in the RMLL. Each year the Blizzard hold try outs for any Manitoba players between the ages of 17 and 21.

Winnipeg has the most representatives, but the team also includes Ritchie from Thompson and players from Selkirk and Fort Alexander. Being based in Winnipeg meant Ritchie was away from home for about a month during one point of the summer.

“I’m kind of getting a bit home sick, but at the same time I am having a lot of fun out here in Winnipeg,” Ritchie said.

In an interview earlier this season, Ritchie compared the caliber of play to what he had experi-

enced with Manitoba’s provincial box lacrosse team – except that the players are now bigger.

The Blizzard are excited to be able to give players like Ritchie the opportunity to play at the next level and.

“Player development at both the grass roots and competitive levels is something the blizzard take very seriously,” Wilson said. “We feel that we’re in a very privileged position to ‘grow the game’ here in Manitoba. This phrase is commonly heard throughout junior and senior teams across the country and is a unique mindset in lacrosse culture, which places an emphasis on giving back to your community and allowing others to experience the game.”

RD Parker ramps up for a new year of school sports

BY ROBIN WARK School hasn’t started yet, but the R.D. Parker Collegiate Trojans are already on the soccer pitch.

This summer the boys and girls teams have been holding optional training sessions four times a week, weather permitting, since Aug. 10. It is preparation for what should be an exciting school sports year.

Things kick off this fall with soccer and volleyball.

The Trojans sports squads are coming off a year where the track and field squad and the senior girls basketball team captured AAA provincial titles.

“Rarely do we have one provincial victory in a year, so to have two is unheard of,” wrote Jeff Paradis, an R.D. Parker Collegiate physical education teacher and coach, in an email interview. “That success has motivated a lot of our athletes to strive for greater accomplishments, and this year should reflect that new motivation and desire to win. People often underestimate the teams from Zone 11, and if last year was not enough of a statement, than this year should do it.”

R.D. Parker Collegiate’s soccer season will offi cially start the rst fi week of school with tryouts starting on Sept. 10.

The length of tryouts will depend on the number of participants. Paradis, who coaches the girls’ team, said that both teams have seen a significant increase

in interest. The optional summer training sessions have demonstrated this.

“Our numbers have been fantastic, dipping as low as 14, and going as high as 26,” Paradis said. “Considering many kids have part-time jobs or travel with their families during the summer, we are very happy with those numbers, especially the number of new faces that were not present last year.”

The soccer season runs just three and half weeks.

The Trojans will travel to a tournament in Swan River on Sept. 25-26. For the second consecutive year, Thompson will host the zone championships.

They are slated for Oct. 2-3.

Coaching the girls squad are Paradis and Katherine Mills, a teacher at Deerwood School. Nuno Pereira leads the boys team with R.D. Parker teacher Alex Burton serving as the assistant coach and teacher liaison. Last year both soccer teams lost in the zone championship tournament.

Tryouts dates have not been set yet for R.D. Parker Collegiate’s volleyball teams, but they are expected to be held during the second or third week of school. The season overlaps with soccer, but students are welcome to play both sports. R.D. Parker Collegiate will be sending boys and girls teams to the court in both the senior and junior

ranks.

Brad Williams, from Juniper School, will be the new senior boys volleyball coach. The other coaches are back from last year and all are R.D. Parker Collegiate staff members. Leading the senior girls are Tairra Warren and Marnie Krentz, while Monica Munro and Jessica Painter will coach their junior counterparts.

The junior boys will be coached by Blair Fortune and Brian Borton. Last year each Trojans volleyball squad was knocked out of the zone championship tournaments by Hapnot Collegiate Institute.

“You can bet that each team is determined to get back into the finals and prevail over the teams from Flin Flon,” Paradis wrote.

The volleyball teams will take part in various tournaments throughout the season. The junior teams will compete in the zone championships Nov. 6-7 in Norway House. The senior zone championships will be held Nov. 1314 in Thompson.

There have been steps taken to add another fall sport – baseball – to the Trojans’ calendar. Paradis said that there is still work to be done on that front, including organizing with other zone teams. While baseball is traditionally a spring sport for many high schools, Thompson’s fi elds would not be ready in time for a regular season.

Chillax World’s Tastiest Food (WTF) is looking to venture into a new aspect of their business, which will include making fresher, and healthier food options at a cost customers can afford.

The hope is that customers can pick their food, and how many calories are in it, and Chillax will make it possible. They’ll continue to have their classic Indian cuisine as well as Canadian.
