Thompson mayoral candidate Ryan Brady says that racist comments he wrote in a white supremacist website forum in 2009, screenshots of which were posted and then deleted on Thompson Talk over the weekend, were “disgusting” and “wrong” and don’t reflect the person he actually is.

“It was very wrong of me to do that especially since I have friends that are Indigenous and different races,” he said Sept. 23.

“People feel betrayed by it.

I have friends messaging me that I saw this post about you and I know what you said was wrong or disgusting or whatever but that’s not who you are.”

The posts were deleted

by Thompson Talk administrator and founder Jeff Mcinnes for ethical and safety reasons.

An article posted on http:// anti-racistcanada.blogspot. com in 2009 about a group called Winnipeg White Pride Warriors shows screenshots of comments Brady wrote on the white supremacist website Stormfront under the name “honoryourlife.”

That user was identified as a “Friends of Stormfront” sustaining member – someone who supported the website financially.

“We all wear the same ‘natural’ uniform/armor, and

that is our WHITE skin!” said one of the posts. Other posts, which included the quote “One blood demands one reich” attributed to Adolf Hitler among other quotes in the user signature, said that Canada was “infested with vermin,” that Asians were “sly and cunning creatures,” and that Indigenous people should “stick to their reserves and stay there.

Much like wild game reserves. They should just stay there and not bother us.” He also wrote that preserving the white race and culture was a priority for him, and that “ovens will be running over with all these race-traitors and jewish pawns.”

Brady said that he was “trolling” when he made those posts.

“I like posting things that are kind of controversial and get people talking,” he said.

“It’s 10 years ago, mind you, but even then I’d just post things to get people riled up.”

Asked if he believed what he wrote then or believes it now, Brady said, “No. Otherwise I wouldn’t have the friends that I do or listen to the music that I do. If people actually knew anything about white nationalists, about most of them, they tend not to have friends that are of different races. They won’t even go to doctors that are a different race.”

Brady said he forgot about the posts until they were put up on Thompson Talk and that he hasn’t posted any such comments since 2010.

“If you go back from then to now you won’t see any of that anywhere online,” Brady said. “I’m all over the internet on tons of different forums, all over Facebook.

You won’t see any of that.

You can ask my friends, you can ask anyone.”

He also said that he didn’t know much about the internet in 2009 “besides how to piss people off.”

“It definitely stays forever,” he said. “It doesn’t go away. I didn’t think about that when I was 18.

I was 18, 19 when I posted that stuff. I’m 29 now. I got kids, a wife, I got a house, I work a full-time job. I’m running for mayor. I just think people should take a look at the evidence that is there and base it on that or come and talk to me.”

Brady said his past actions are affecting him now, as he has been dealing with the aftermath of these revelations since they were brought to light.

“I think I’m dealing with everything decently, trying to,” he said, though he would have liked to have been able to address them further within the group where they were posted but was removed from the group by the administrators.

Mcinnes said that Brady was given a chance to respond before being kicked out, in which the mayoral candidate said that people could believe what they wanted, that he wouldn’t try to change their minds and that he would still be running for mayor.

“There’s a whole wide internet out there for him to plead his case,” said Mcinnes. “Thompson Talk is one tiny slice of that internet that has been and always will be an oasis for people who don’t want to

have racism in any form defended. No one is entitled to be a member of Thompson Talk, it is a mild privilege.

If you’re going to disparage entire races of people, trolling or not, you have nothing to add to the group anyway besides blatant ignorance and stupidity.”

“It wasn’t right of me at all,” said Brady about his racist posts. “I’ll readily admit that. I don’t agree with any of that but that’s what it looks like. If people actually got to know me they’d say, ‘Well, what you posted there, yeah, it’s disgusting, it’s wrong but that’s not who you are.’”

Blocked culverts led to washout at spot where freight train derailed neared Ponton Sept. 15, says investigator The Sept. 15 derailment near Ponton that killed one crew member and seriously injured another may have been caused by a washout.

Jerry Berriault, a regional senior investigator with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB), which investigates marine, aviation and rail accidents, told CBC two culverts became blocked sometime between the past inspection and the accident, stopping water from flowing under the tracks and resulting in it washing away the ground supporting them.

The train was going about 40 kilometres per hour when it hit the washed-out section, described as raised bank 12

feet above the creek, rather than a bridge. Heavy rains in the area and a release of water upstream, possibly due to natural flows or beaver activity, contributed to the washout, the investigator said, and the train stopped abruptly when it hit it.

Murad Al-Katib, CEO of one of the companies that recently purchased the Hudson Bay Railway from The Pas to Churchill, said that the section of track was inspected twice in the week before the accident, with the most recent inspection taking place just two days prior.

The 38-year-old man who died as a result of the accident was a train conductor while the 59-year-old man

who was airlifted to Winnipeg with serious injuries was an engineer. Both were from The Pas and they were trapped in the train for several hours following the crash, which happened 17 kilometres southwest of where the railway crosses Highway 6 near the junction with Highway 39.

Three locomotives and four rail cars, two carrying propane, went off the track. Diesel from one of the locomotives spilled into the Mitishto River.

Passenger rail service from Winnipeg to Gillam is suspended indefinitely, Via Rail said.

OBITUARY NICK ROMANIUK November 22, 1937 - September 17, 2018 Nick passed away peacefully with family by his side at the Thompson General Hospital on September 17, 2018 after a short battle with cancer at the age of 80 years old.

Nick was born on November 22, 1937 in Gronlid, Saskatchewan. He moved to Thompson in 1967 and secured a job at Inco Limited until his retirement in 1993. After his retirement Nick loved spending time with his family, gardening, various wood working projects, fishing, and enjoying sitting on his front step seeing what everyone was up to.

Nick is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Jean Matechuk and family, Children Cheri, Cindy, Mabel, Nick Jr, Jackie and Joan. Brother Walter (Darlene), Sisters Mary, Kathy, and Pauline. Plus numerous grand children and great grand children.

He was predeceased by His Mother Annie, Father John, Brothers William, Peter, Andrew and Steve.

Special thanks to Nick’s right hand man Terry for everything he has done over the years and especially all he has done for Grandpa Nick during his illness.

A celebration of life was held on Saturday September 22, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Juniper Centre in Thompson. Cremation has taken place and burial will take place at a later date in Saskatchewan.

Pride North of 55 caps off another successful march in Thompson

Thompson’s fifth Pride week came to a close Sept.

22 with a march and barbecue organized by the local group Pride North of 55.

Following on the heels of a flag raising ceremony at City Hall Sept. 17, Saturday’s festivities attracted a small but dedicated group of LGBTQ+ community member and allies, who departed from the Thompson Regional Community Centre (TRCC) around 11 a.m.

In unseasonably cold temperatures, the group completed a three-kilometre circuit around Thompson Drive and Cree Road with plenty of rainbow flags in tow.

Encouraged by honks from passing cars, the marchers kept themselves motivated by singing along to songs such as “I Will Survive” by Gloria Gaynor, “Firework” by Katy Perry and “Y.M.C.A.” by the Village People.

Upon returning to the TRCC, participants enjoyed food and live music from local rock band Between the Ditches.

Even though Pride North of 55 has undergone some organizational restructuring throughout the last year, chairperson Susannah Mueller said that it’s still critically important to put these kinds of events together for local members of the LGBTQ+ community.

“We’re trying to co-ordinate things in the north and be there for people who need it, so that people feel like they don’t have to leave the north in order to find some place to be comfortable and accepted,” she said.

Pride North of 55 is considering organizing a movie night next month and a Valentine’s Day dance in February 2019, although nothing is set in stone just yet.

The group’s ability to pull these events together is entirely dependent on the commitment of their

volunteers, which puts a lot of pressure on people like Mueller and other key organizers, including her partner Lee Ann Bowman.

“When you’re doing volunteer commitments, most people have other things going on, full-time school or full-time jobs,” said Mueller, who teaches English at R.D. Parker Collegiate. “I’ve seen different groups come and go in Thompson that were often person dependent … and that’s another reason why

I stepped in as acting chair because I didn’t want to see it dissipate and fall apart.”

The group’s dependence on volunteers is especially vital in 2018 after they broke away from Pride Winnipeg to become an independent organization, which means they no longer have access to that larger group’s resources.

Coming out as transgender a positive experience

For Deon Howard, building up the courage to come out as a transgender man was far from easy.

“I was very, very scared,” he said Sept.

23 outside City Hall, where he had invited friends to join him for a group photo as a way of thanking them for their support. “I was going to go to school so my plan was, ‘I’m not going to come out until I move to Ontario and I don’t have to deal with anyone here.’ I got to a point where I couldn’t. I had to come out right then and there because my mental health was so bad, I didn’t think I’d be around any more so I came out. I was expecting the worst. I had no faith in humanity, honestly.”

His worst fears weren’t realized however.

In fact, it was the opposite.

“I posted something on Twitter and I was scared, I was crying,” he said. “I was at work when I did it, actually, but right away the support was unreal. I had my friends telling me they supported me, and my family, strangers that I didn’t even know message me saying they support me and they’re an ally to me so it’s been awesome.”

Since then, Howard has even changed some people’s minds about gender and sexuality.

“I worked in the smelter so that was another barrier for me for coming out,” he says. “I was like, ‘I work with a bunch of old men who probably have their old beliefs,’ and things like that but I changed their views. They’re like, ‘D before I used to be against all this stuff but you changed my mind, you’ve helped me grow as a person,’ and that’s really cool to hear.”

Howard hasn’t ever participated in any Pride events in Thompson and couldn’t do so Sept.

22 because he was out of town for medical appointments so he messaged friends and former high school coaches for some public recognition of their support.

Howard also says that he spent much of his youth feeling unhappy and being unsure why but that things have improved since he came out as transgender.

“My mental health is significantly better now,” Howard says. “For the people that don’t think they have support or if they’re scared of coming out or anything, just know that they have supporters, there’s people, there’s allies, there’s so many people that are with them whether they’re family, friends or strangers.”

Manitoba’s 911 service – and why Thompson doesn’t have it

If you want to report a crime progress in Thompson, you can’t just dial 911 – except from a cell phone. You have to punch in 204-677-6911.

But despite it looking like a local number, that call will not be going to the Thompson RCMP detachment, but to the RCMP’s Winnipeg dispatch centre.

“All calls for the RCMP in Manitoba are dispatched from this location,” said RCMP Manitoba media relations officer Sgt. Paul Manaigre, who was unable provide the number of dispatchers working there at any given time, since it varies according to need.

That dispatch centre was created back in 1995 with the help of a $3.6 million contribution from the provincial government. Then Thompson mayor Bill Comaskey lobbied for the RCMP to establish a dispatch centre in Thompson to serve communities throughout the province’s north, but the force opted for a centralized location in Winnipeg.

The province-wide 911 emergency call system began in Brandon at the outset of 1997, later expanding to other communities, and today covers a large number of southern municipalities, as well as several in the north, including Flin Flon, The Pas, Lynn Lake, Leaf Rapids, Churchill, Snow Lake, Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Moose Lake and Wabowden. Participating

municipalities pay a fee to the City of Brandon, which operates the 911 system out of its fire hall, to cover its costs. In 2019, that fee will be $4.34 per person, with populations based on the Manitoba Municipal Officials Guide and the Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada profiles, says a City of Brandon spokesperson. Given Thompson’s population of approximately 13,000, the 2019 fee for being part of the 911 system would be about $56,000.

The 911 service also covers calls for ambulances and fire departments in participating municipalities. In 2017, the Provincial E-9-1-1 Centre in Brandon created a total of 106,866 events in its system for service, though some required multiple calls to complete.

Two to three staff are on duty taking calls at the centre 24 hours a day, with three additional separate staff dedicated to taking calls and dispatching officers from the Brandon Police Services and five other municipal or city police forces in Manitoba.

Medical calls are transferred to the Medical Transportation Co-ordination Centre, located in the Brandon Regional Health Centre and established in 2005 by the provincial government of the day.

The 911 centre also dispatches fire services for 200-plus municipalities and First Nations throughout Manitoba. For communities that have 911 service, calls

to police go to the 911 centre first and are then transferred to the RCMP dispatch centre in Winnipeg.

“Sometimes there is queue and we are required to wait with the caller on the line,” said the City of Brandon spokesperson.

Calls to Thompson Fire & Emergency Services (TFES) emergency line at 204-6777911 are answered by a dispatcher at the fire hall, who sends emergency crews to the scene and then transfers medical emergencies to the Medical Transportation Coordination Centre with additional information. Fire calls are handled locally, the City of Thompson clarified in a Sept. 17 press release.

“The installation of a 911 system across the province is co-ordinated by the Province of Manitoba,” said the city.

“The infrastructure required for a 911 system is not currently in place to connect Thompson to the network.”

According to the City of

Brandon, to become part of the 911 system, municipalities must enter into a system with them and Bell MTS. “This service also includes call-taking for fire-related calls and dispatching of fire resources requiring the local fire department to have radios compatible with the FleetNet system,” said the Brandon spokesperson. “We will ask for specific information from the fire department regarding area mapping and mutual aid agreements for their area. Bell MTS will work toward connecting 911 to the area and Brandon will add all the mapping and procedure data to the CAD system and operating guidelines.”

In response to a question during the general inquiries portion of the Sept. 17 council meeting, Thompson Mayor Dennis Fenske said it is not physically possible to have 911 service in Thompson because the infrastructure in Northern Manitoba is not in Bell place.

Early snowfall doesn’t deter Thompsonites from trying to Take Back the Night

This year’s Take Back the Night march participants in Thompson were dressed up in tuques, mitts and winter jackets to contend with the snowfall that took place the afternoon of Sept. 21.

Despite this inhospitable weather, the marchers still completed their loop around the downtown core in an effort to raise awareness about violence against

women.

This year’s march kicked off at Robin’s Donuts, where several guest speakers put the event’s proceedings into the proper context.

Harlie Pruder, the chairperson of the board of the Thompson Crisis Centre, said sexual and gendered violence continues to be a lived reality for many Northern Manitoba residents.

According to Discourse

Media, Thompson has the ninth highest rate of police-reported violence against women in the country.

“Violence is a complex issue that comes in many forms and affects every person in a community,” said Pruder. “Whether you are on the street because it is safer than going home, or walking to work in the early morning, you do not deserve violence.”

Even though Take Back

the Night marches have been held in Canada since 1978, attitudes towards events like this have undergone a significant transformation over those 40 years.

A lot has even happened socially since Thompson’s last Take Back the Night event in September 2017, as the #MeToo movement was brought into the public eye during October of that year.

Deputy mayor Colleen Smook alluded to this in-

creased public awareness around sexual violence by observing that the Take Back the Night march she attended several years ago saw participation from mostly women, as opposed to the healthy mix of the sexes on Friday night.

“It is so nice to see the men joining us here tonight and the children that are out so that we are passing down the information, that we’re not hiding it,“ she said.

erence to the broader concern about public safety in Thompson, which has been a hot topic of conversation online and within the walls of City Hall over the last couple weeks.

“I have seen stabbings in the last two days, somebody that was attacked by a machete,” she said.

“There should be no need for people to be scared to walk down the streets, whether it’s in Thompson or an outlying community.”

Steve Molloy settling into new role as Thompson deputy fire chief

Thompson Fire & Emergency Services (TFES) has gone through a pretty significant changing of the guard over the last couple months.

Mike Bourgon took over for long-time fire chief John Maskerine in June, and former captain Steve Molloy is now filling the role of deputy fire chief that Bourgon left behind.

Having officially accepted this position in mid-September, Molloy told the Thompson Citizen that he’s excited to get started, since he’s been working towards this goal for the last 25 years.

“It’s been in my family since my father was fire chief back home in Newfoundland, so hearing the stories at the supper table you kind of grow into ‘Oh, I want to be a firefighter. I want to be like my dad,’” he said. “It’s always been my vision, my dream to become either a deputy or a fire chief, but this is where I need to be. This is kind of my calling if you will.”

After cutting his teeth in Labrador City, Newfoundland, Molloy became a member of TFES back in 2003, and slowly worked his way up from the position of probationary firefighter to becoming one of this department’s top officials.

While Molloy will now spend half his time managing TFES’s day-to-day operations, the other half of his responsibilities as deputy fire chief involves participating in public education and outreach programs.

Molloy is no stranger to these initiatives, having previously participated events like Tim Hortons Camp Day, McDonald’s McHappy Day and the Wapanohk Community School breakfast program as a means of spreading the word about fire safety.

“Of course, next month being October is our fire prevention month, so we really hone in on all the elementary schools,” he said. “I’ll be looking forward to getting out to speaking to all the schools and just emphasizing the importance of fire safety and whatnot. I guess that’s my forte.”

Molloy said that these kinds of safety awareness campaigns are more important than ever in the wake of this past summer, where Thompson residents saw some serious manmade grass and brush fires.

“One in particular that stands out in the back of my mind was the fire up on the back of Yale,” said Molloy, referencing a May 24 incident where TFES required air support from Manitoba Hydro to extinguish an out-of-control blaze. “It’s the first time

in my career starting since 2003 that we actually had to put some residents on evacuation notice. So that really was a little too close for comfort for me.”

Even though they are moving away from wildfire season, Molloy said TFES still has to contend with a number of public safety hazards during the upcoming winter months.

“Now we’re switching into the temperatures getting colder, and [talking about] public safety around thin ice and stuff like this, cold temperatures, exposure to hypothermia and whatnot,” he said. “We just want to advise the public that, as tempting as it is, especially with the small children, don’t let them

out of your sight, don’t let them play near the river’s edge, because accidents do happen.”

While Molloy admits that this new position will take a little getting used to, he’s just glad that he has a great department to back him up, including Bourgon and deputy chief for emergency medical services Selby Brown.

“For me, the whole aspect of the position is continually learning,” he said. “Myself and deputy Brown and chief Bourgon, we’re here to help each other and between the three of us we bring a lot to the table with regards to our experience and training. So it’s an awesome department to work for.”

No smoking weed inside these Thompson apartments after legalization, say owners and managers

With recreational marijuana set to become legal nationwide in less than four weeks, the provincial government has been hard at work reminding Manitobans where they can and can’t use this drug past Oct 17.

While awareness campaigns are highlighting the fact that residents are forbidden from lighting up in public and in provincial parks, a spokesperson for the province’s Residential Tenancies Branch said that whether tenants are allowed to smoke marijuana inside their own apartments is up to individual property owners.

Teresa Bartz, the resident manager of Thompson’s Highland Tower, said one of the main reasons why she is forbidding recreational cannabis use indoors is due to the building’s air exchange system.

“So if you’re smoking it in your apartment, that smoke and smell is going to go through the whole building and because there’s young children and babies in

the building we can’t allow it,” she said. “If it was just an adult building we could possibly have a different set of rules and regulations.”

Since building owner Shelter Canadian Properties Limited has not established a cannabis policy at this time, Bartz said she is willing to leave some wiggle room for individuals who want to vape the drug.

Bartz said she could make an exception on a case-by-case basis for people who use marijuana for medical reasons.

Other property management companies have decided to govern marijuana use by lumping it in with their existing smoking policies.

Armour Management president Mike Romani says the company has banned smoking at all of their properties since its inception six years ago. This means that the same policy will be applied cannabis usage at their Thompson properties like Forest View Suites and Ashberry Place.

New 10,000-square-foot Liquor Mart will offer 500 more products when finished in summer of 2019

Thompson’s new Liquor Mart at the corner of Mystery Lake Road and Thompson Drive North will be complete by the end of next summer and be about 25 per cent larger than the current location, says a spokesperson for Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries (MBLL).

The new store will be about 10,000 square feet, more in line with the size of similarly busy Liquor Marts elsewhere in the province, and about 2,000 square feet larger that the current location.

“The Thompson Liquor Mart is currently one of our busiest stores,” said MBLL communications officer Laurel Trotter recently, in response to inquiries made in August.

“With the larger location we’ll be able to feature even more new products on the shelves (approximately 500 more listings than the existing store).”

Whether that will translate into more workers – Liquor Mart currently has four full-time employees and 11 to 15 part-time workers, depending on the season – isn’t yet known.

“Any additional staffing needs will be dictated by overall store traffic – but we’ll likely add a few new members to the team when the location opens,” Trotter said. “We often do seasonal hiring in the sum-

The Thompson Citizen also inquired about who the design and construction tenders were awarded to and how much the new store would cost, but MBLL said it was unable to release the details of the procurement contract yet.

In 2016, MBLL representatives said the current store, built in 1975, serves about 200,000 customers a year and that stores with a similar sales volume were usually 10,000 square feet or more.

The current Liquor Mart receives about 40,000 pounds of freight per week,

which has to be moved from storage areas in the basement to the sales floor upstairs.

The cost of the project was estimated to be about $5 million when it was first made public in 2016 and MBLL said it expected that building the new store, which it said would be required to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver standard certification and exceed the 2011 National Energy Code for buildings under provincial government regulations, would create the equivalent of about 10 full-time construction jobs for a period of one year.
