“Violence doesn’t just affect women and girls; it affects the men who care about them, their

families, their friends, their coworkers and their communities,” said Kim Hickes, executive director of YWCA Thompson, speaking to the walkers prior to the march. “It’s not easy to walk in high heels, but it is fun, and it generates a conversation that is really difficult to talk about: violence.”

I felt very proud that our men wanted to step up and contribute.”

March 11, 1931 – September 1, 2016 It is with heavy hearts that our family announces the sudden but peaceful passing of our Dad. With family by his side, Bill Harrison was welcomed into the loving arms of God on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at Meadowood Manor Personal Care Home in Winnipeg.

Bill is survived by his wife of 64 years Wilma (nee Sinclair) and his children, Susan Harrison (Gord), Gail Harrison, Tanis Kydd (Grant), Bill (Michelle) and David (Natalie).

Also his grandchildren, Cheryl Crawley (Tom), Amaris Nemez (Jason), Samara Harris (Logan), Harrison Nemez (Cara), Greg Kydd (Ashleigh), Teri Kydd Wade (Zach), Devin Kydd (Kristina), Sean Kydd, Derek Harrison, Brock Harrison, Teigan Harrison, Zach Harrison; Step-grandchildren Tanner West and Josh Harding; Great-grandchildren Makenna and Leo Crawley, Hudson Harris and Calder Kydd; Sister-in-law Lorna McTaggart and brother-in-law Jim (Sally) Sinclair as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents Mina and Cecil, brother Jack (2001) and his daughter-in-law Sue (2004).

Bill was born and raised in Grandview, Manitoba growing up in his family’s grocery and building contractor businesses. During his High School years, Bill apprenticed at the Grandview Exponent newspaper. After the death of his father at age 18, he moved to Neepawa to work at their newspaper and then ended up in Atikokan, Ontario where he was a partner in the town’s ¿rst newspaper, the Atikokan Progress. It was there that Bill and Wilma met. They married on December 20, 1952 in Winnipeg and moved back to Atikokan in 1954 to learn the restaurant business from Wilma’s parents so that they could retire. They bought Sinclair’s Restaurant in 1956. In November of 1961 Bill ventured to the new town of Thompson, Manitoba to open their second Sinclair’s Restaurant with Wilma and the kids following in January 1962.

Bill was an entrepreneur and could see the opportunities that Thompson had to offer. Over the years he had numerous business partners and invested in many enterprises. In addition to Sinclair’s Restaurant, some of the businesses that Bill and Wilma owned and operated include Siggies Restaurant, Queen of Hearts, A&W on Nelson Road, Gondola Pizza, Meridian Hotel, Allied Rentals Property Management, The Headframe Cabaret, B.J.’s Rollerdrome, Baaco Pizza, Southwood Plaza, and Mystery Lake Body Shop.

Bill was a mentor to many and a builder and supporter of northern Manitoba. He spent many years on the Manitoba Housing and Renewal Corporation Board representing the north. He was Past President of the Thompson Ski Club and Past President of the Thompson Progressive Conservative Association.

Bill and Wilma moved to Winnipeg in 1984. They enjoyed travelling for many years, spending winters at their home in Sebring, Florida and summers at their cottage on Coney Island on Lake of the Woods, Kenora, Ontario. Out of country travel came to an end when Bill suffered a major heart attack in 2000. About 2006 he was incorrectly diagnosed as having Parkinson’s disease which was correctly identi¿ed as PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) in 2010. He suffered this horribly debilitating disease with courage and dignity as it slowly took away the use of his entire body but left his mind intact most of the time. His favourite place on earth was at the cottage and his last visit was for a Sinclair family reunion in July this year.

A celebration of Bill’s life was held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Glen Lawn Funeral Home with Chaplain David Holland of Meadowood Manor of¿ciating.

OBITUARY AL HAWKINS

October 25, 1932 - September 7, 2016 Allan (Al) Kearny Hawkins gave us his last sly grin on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, just weeks shy of his 84th birthday.

Remaining to cherish Al’s memory are his wife of 66 years, Mary Ann; children and their spouses and partners; Barbara Ellen Ann Jarchow (Uwe) Kathryn Jean (Calvin) Trainor, Juliette Carol (Pete Sherman), Debra Louise MacGregor (Randy), Cynthia Mary Vasiloff (Steve), Karen Ann (Gianni de Francesco) and Allan Edward (Laura); Sister Melva (Hossay); sister-in-law Barbara; brother-in-law Edward, and close cousin Norma and their families. He was very close to his 12 grandchildren, extended family and countless friends. He was predeceased by his sister Irene (Winklemier) and brother Ron (Butch Maclean).

A loving husband, brother, father, grandfather and uncle, Al Hawkins started life in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. In 1949 Al met and later married the love of his life Mary Ann Stella (nee Adamowski).

Some knew Al best through his 32 years at INCO (now VALE) in Thompson, Manitoba. He had a strong work ethic and a keen mind, ultimately rising to chief power engineer. Al just “knew” how things worked and was driven by curiosity. He was always ready to share what he learned and celebrate the surprises of life.

Al enjoyed time with family and friends playing games and sharing stories. He was an avid ¿sherman, bowler, pool player and watcher of thunderstorms. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and called bingo at the St. Lawrence Parish in Thompson, Manitoba and the Boulton Retirement residence in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Al took studio quality photographs, painted and cooked with joy. He loved music. His legacy of photos, movies and “mixed” CDs are family treasures.

Mass of Christian Burial were celebrated on Monday, September 12, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. in Saint John Brebeuf Roma Catholic Church, 1707 Brebeuf Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba, with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant, presiding. A private family entombment will be held in the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery, 3990 Portage Avenue.

The family also expresses thanks to the caregivers at Riverview Health Centre Palliative Care ward and Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant, Pastor, Saint John Brebeuf church, for their compassion and care.

prospective local Bruce Moncur was quietly celebrating his own anniversary that day: it was the 10th anniversary of his discharge from the hospital after being wounded serving in Afghanistan.

Like many that day, Moncur’s life had changed the moment the first plane had hit the World Trade Centre. Moncur had joined the army reserves while still in high school in July of 2001; little in the events of the previous decade suggested that he would ever be obliged to set foot on foreign soil. “It was a summer job, really. We were a peacetime army at that time.”

Only 19 days after he completed basic training, the towers fell. “I get a phone call with the order to move, saying, ‘You’re on standby, and in 72 hours you’re expected to be ready for deployment,’ and here I’m wondering about my Grade 11 math class!”

Moncur would not be deployed until 2006 to take part in Operation Medusa, the largest Canadian-led battle not only in Afghanistan, but also since the Korean War. Out of 40 soldiers in his platoon, only five emerged who had not been killed or wounded. “A lot of people don’t understand that Canadians suffered more casualties per man than the Americans did. Forty thousand troops deployed, 2,100 injured, 158 dead; that’s one in seventeen.”

Moncur was one of those casualties: during the operation, Moncur suffered three shrapnel wounds in the head, back and buttocks, the result of close proximity to American air support. Three facilities and two major surgeries later, Moncur left the hospital on Sept. 11, 2006, leaving behind five per cent of his

own personal 9/11; when I got home, I had lost the ability to read, write, walk, and my talking was slurred.

I had to rebuild.”

But despite surviving a war, multiple surgeries, and a gruelling recovery, Moncur’s battle wasn’t over yet: today, he fights the Canadian government.

“After I was injured, I received a lump sum payment of $22,000 for five per cent of my brain. That was it.

Thanks for coming out.”

In his decade-long battle with the Veterans Affairs office, Moncur has become a high profile advocate for wounded veterans: he has published a book, and was named one of Huffington Post Canada’s 50 Most Important Contributors, a list which also included the likes of Justin Trudeau.

Despite the life-changing incident, Moncur hardly holds it against the Americans. Between being one of Canada’s closest allies, and having friends who lived in the vicinity of Ground Zero, tribalism is far from Moncur’s mind. “Friendly fire is a part of war, and the American Air Force is bar none the best in the world.

Having those planes with you feels pretty good when it doesn’t land on you.”

As for the circumstances, Moncur saw the war as a personal duty as much as a national one: “I had friends and family that lived there, went to school by the World Trade Centre, and couldn’t come back for a year because of the asbestos and everything. I had friends who lived it. I was 17, and I was angry.”

Until recently, Moncur has lived in Windsor, Ontario; he hopes to resettle in Thompson and is in the early stages of opening a business in the community.

Bindle wasn’t biggest spender among Thompson MLA candidates last April

Thompson MLA Kelly Bindle’s first-try success in a provincial election campaign was achieved on a shoestring budget only about a third higher than that of the Liberal candidate and much lower than the NDP incumbent Steve Ashton, whom he defeated.

An election expenses report that the Progressive Conservative MLA filed Aug. 30 shows that he

raised more than the $13,469.46 he spent during the campaign period, $11,848.35 of which was categorized as election expenses.

Bindle’s campaign brought in $15,320 overall, including $2,600 from the constituency association, $2,270 from the PC party and $10,450 in contributions from individuals, the largest of which were $3,000 from Adrianna Daudrich and $1,000 each from Susan Harrison and

Ron Matechuk.

Advertising was Bindle’s largest election expense, totalling $3,272.98, closely followed by office rent and utilities, which came to $3,141.25. The successful candidate also spent $2,746.16 on signs and structural support, $1,546.29 on posters, pamphlets and other promotional materials, and $848.75 on transportation, accommodation and food. Smaller expenses included

$77.46 in bank charges, $124.98 for office supplies and postage and $90.48 for phone bills.

Ashton spent $18,934.30 overall and $17,980.87 in election expenses during the campaign, while third-place finisher Inez Vystrcil-Spence spent $7,758.77, including $7,318.95 in election expenses.

Spending limits for the Thompson electoral district in the provincial election were $6,711 for

advertising and $32,545 overall, the lowest for any electoral district.

Candidates are eligible for reimbursement of up to 50 per cent of eligible election expenses if they receive 10 per cent or more of valid votes in their electoral division. Parties qualify for reimbursement if they receive 10 per cent or more of valid votes in each electoral division where it endorsed a candidate

Compensation for 114 highest-paid city employees in 2015 up more than a million dollars over previous year

Employees on the city payroll earning $50,000 or more per year in total compensation earned more than a million more dollars collectively in 2015 than the previous year, a document posted on the city’s website shows.

The document, prepared to comply with Manitoba’s Bill 57 Public Sector Compensation Disclosure Act, which came into effect in 1996, shows the names, job titles and total compensation of employees paid by

the city who made $50,000 or more in 2015, including salaries, allowances, overtime payments, vacation payouts, taxable benefits and retroactive pay.

The number of employees who made that much in 2015 – 114 in all – is the same as it was in 2014. But last year those 114 employees brought in total compensation of $9,133,442.56, up from $8,054,595.55 in 2014, an increase of $1,078,847.01, or about 13 per cent.

Three city employees – city

manager Gary Ceppetelli, chief financial officer Jenny Krentz and director of fire and public safety John Maskerine – made more than $100,000 in total compensation in 2015. The city manager’s total compensation was up $7,010.87 from 2014 to $151,179.54 in 2015, an increase of slightly less than five per cent. The chief financial officer’s compensation rose $7,746.43 from 2014 to $141,873.90 in 2015, an increase of a little less than six per cent. The fire and public safety director’s compensa-

tion went up $5,351.89 to $103,669.31, an increase of a little more than five percent.

Audited financial statements for 2015 show that the city’s total expenses were $27,978,284, up $1,824,665 from 2014, an increase of approximately seven per cent.

The collective increase in compensation that went to employees making $50,000 or more in 2015 over the previous year accounts for about 59 per cent of the increased spending. All told, the compensation of the employees whose earnings are

subject to disclosure under the terms of Bill 57 accounted for slightly less than a third (approximately 32.5 per cent) of the city’s budget in 2015, up from about 31 per cent the previous year.

Civility should be part of civics

I

f you have seen recent city council meetings, either in person or on TV or online, you could be forgiven for wondering if actual physical violence is about to break out, given the way some observers and meeting participants interact with each other. Of course, it hasn’t, but it’s hard to deny that there’s an undercurrent of hostility colouring the proceedings from time to time.

This is not an unprecedented situation in Thompson.

Prior to the current group of councillors being elected, tension was often high in the chamber, leaving some of these in attendance feeling the same sort of awkwardness as a child who visits a friend’s house only to witness the friend’s parents fighting.

The difference between then and now was that the latent and sometimes blatant hostility was being expressed mostly by councillors towards one another, instead of from the public to council members and vice versa. The similarity is that people who disagree were and are finding it difficult to separate the personal and the political.

There’s nothing wrong with having beliefs, standing behind them and fighting hard to have them heard.

That’s actually what democracy – rule by the people – is largely about: having competing voices expressing opinions in the hopes that the best ideas win out, though that isn’t always necessarily the case. But there is something wrong with ascribing sinister motives to those with whom you disagree or feeling like having to defend decisions made on behalf of the citizens you represent is a hassle, rather than part of a healthy discourse.

The truth of the matter is this: in a city the size of Thompson, people do not get into government in order to enrich themselves or their friends, and it is distasteful to publicly accuse part-time councillors or full-time city staff of shady dealings or dishonesty without having good evidence to base those accusations on. Equally disagreeable is treating anyone who comes to express concern with how the city or council are dealing with a given issue as a crank or an annoyance. The general inquiries and question period portions of public council meetings may be the only time that citizens who feel aggrieved can put their questions directly to those in charge and hope to hear an answer that contains real information and not just clichés and platitudes.

Listening to people from both sides interrupt and heckle each other and threaten to call the police should not be part of normal practice in Thompson municipal politics but unfortunately it’s starting to be. Everyone should feel free to dispute the legitimacy of another person’s ideas but only if they agree that their opponents have just as much of a right to hold the opposite opinion.

Sept. 11 memories still vivid 15 years later

By Donna Wilson Where were you that September morning? Most of us will never forget what we were doing when we heard the news. I remember that morning as if it were yesterday. I remember the drive to work because it was Sept. 11 and it was such a beautiful fall morning. I had the window down in my car and I was feeling very grateful for the beautiful day and the peaceful country we live in. I’m sure I’ve had those thoughts before but I distinctly remember them clear as anything from that morning because of what followed.

My co-host Dave Devine

and I started our morning radio show like any other day, other than the fact that it was our news director’s first day and she was preparing for her newscast as we were preparing for our games and the fun we had planned for our show. The phone rang which Dave answered and told me it was a prank call. The phone rang again and Dave said it was another prank call and was getting annoyed. I asked him what were they saying and he said they were saying a plane flew into one of the twin towers in New York City. My jaw dropped and he said, “It’s just someone pulling a prank, don’t worry about it.” Then another call and I said, “Dave, we should check the wire.”

I wondered, what if it’s not a prank call? He walked into the news room and the wire was going crazy with paper flying out of it, and the look on his face was shock.

Our show was over and the brand new news director took over the airwaves with the horrific news. We didn’t have television at the radio station so we couldn’t

watch CNN. I just kept going to the wire and reading. We didn’t all have cell phones like we do now and I didn’t have a laptop computer to keep me updated.

My thoughts were racing to my children at school as I had to see them. I knew they were safe but I had to see with my own eyes.

I drove to the school and peeked in at them and thanked God for my blessings. I went home and watched CNN and saw the horrific view. I then took the same beautiful route to the radio station on Hayes Road, taking the road from the Norplex Pool as I had earlier that morning, with a different mindset. It struck me as I drove down the same road how I had felt so grateful for our beautiful peaceful country hours ago with gratefulness which was so much stronger now.

A fear had set in as I heard news that planes had been diverted to Newfoundland, where many of my family live, and thoughts that if whoever had caused this chaos may do the same to Newfoundland.

My grandmother laid on

a gurney in hospital emergency room, where she had been for a few days after having a stroke, as there was a shortage of beds. My mom recalls the nurse taking a break and going outside, walking through the waiting area and seeing the television and going back to my mom and her sister and saying, “You have to see the TV.” My mom thought they were watching a show or something as it did not seem real. It was real, and our lives were forever changed that day.

Many children don’t know what it was like before 9/11. Many of us wish we could go back to those days of feeling safe.

As I write this column 15 years later, my heart still hurts for the lives lost and the families that were forever changed, for children that will never know their mother or father, for heroes that ran in to save others and lost their lives and for the heroes that live with the nightmares of what they witnessed.

Fun-loving Brits

BY DANIEL MCSWEENEY While working at a big mining operation in Manitoba, Canada, my secretary tricked me into signing a requisition for a mink coat.

That was not a “stock” mining item, so the purchasing and warehouse folk rolled on the floor in laughter about how she had stitched up her boss. I got back at her, though, by drafting a fake letter gushingly thanking her for agreeing to represent the company in a tobacco-spitting contest at the local winter carnival, an application I had pretended to submit on her behalf. She would, the letter said, be the only woman in the contest. Much to my pleasure, she was not terribly pleased at receiving this news – and certainly not with me.

It’s a disgusting competition where contestants spit out juicy tobacco expectorate for distance and accuracy.

In this particular event, the contestants gathered in a hockey arena while spectators cheered them on from the stands. It’s not unique to North America, of course, and one bloke in the United Kingdom once expectorated a distance of 28 feet. My secretary didn’t care to beat such a record. She might prefer a nail polish or hair-styling competition, certainly nothing to do with tobacco slime.

So letter in hand and high heels clicking along the corridor; she stormed into my office. I would get her name withdrawn or I might end up singing like a high soprano in a church choir.

I hadn’t thought about such crazy competitions until we moved to England where the Brits stage some of the most unusual events man has ever devised. They all make me wonder if 17th century French philosopher Rene Descartes is right: that most men, “lead lives of quiet desperation”and perhaps we need such distractions to spice up our existence.

Or perhaps we are just creative fun-lovers who know laughter is indeed the best medicine. I believe both statements ring true – and laugh along with people in the U.K. who seem particularly adept at being so deliciously out of their ever-loving minds!

And God bless them for their cheese-rolling, worm coaxing, thumb wrestling inventiveness!

Cheese, thumbs & other fun One of the most fascinating activities here is the annual cheese-rolling competition at Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester, England. Described by one observer as “the granddaddy of weird sports,” it involves hundreds of firedup lads and lasses chasing a circular nine-pound chunk of cheese down a 700-foot hill.

It’s not just a run; it is more like flying as contestants

catapult through the air in pursuit of the cheese travelling at 70 miles an hour. It’s an event filled with hazards requiring medical personnel at the bottom of the hill ready to whisk the injured off to hospital. And in this contest, remarkably all the victor gets (along with bumps and bruises) is the cheese!

I have been accused of “being all thumbs” when it comes to digital dexterity.

Here in the United Kingdom, that ineptitude just might serve me well in the World Thumb Wrestling Contest in the town of Beccles, not far from Norwich. It’s a competition thought to have originated in the U.K. and involves contestants inserting their thumbs into a miniature wrestling arena.

They are urged to dress up their thumbs and give themselves “stage names.” (Note – Thumberlina, Thumbertaker and Foxy Thumb are all taken.) I would dress up my thumb as either stay in the EU leader PM David Cameron or perhaps leave the EU leader Boris Johnson. Given the quality of information from both sides, it’s probably as good a way as any to decide on an issue where opinions are high, facts are low.

In the little English village of Hallaton, Leicestshire, villagers gather every Easter Monday to stage what is called a Hare Pie Scramble and Bottle Kicking event.

Without going into detail, participants in this very English and very eccentric event march through the village,

Daniel McSweeney eat rabbit pie and penny loaves of bread. Then they play a rather unique football match between Hallaton and nearby Medbourne. What makes this match unique is that a barrel of beer weighing five kilograms is used rather than a football. And instead of a football pitch, the teams boot the beer over a mile of “fields, fences and streams.”

It’s a rather gruelling event that takes five hours. And the rules are very simple – there aren’t any. The winning team doesn’t get a cheese; the victors, though, get to drink the beer.

For those less energetic, the U.K. is the home of the annual World Snail Racing Championship near Norfolk. And if you want to get down and dirty, you can enter the World Worm Charming Championship in

Willaston, England. It’s there contestants must persuade worms to emerge from the English soil. There are also woolsack races in Gloucester, egg throwing in Lancashire – and even bog snorkelling in Wales. I particularly like the “gurning” competition in Cumbria where contestants stick their heads through a horse collar and “make ugly.”

The goal is to “snarl like a dog, look savage and distort the countenance.” The winner, of course, is the one judged most ugly.

Yellow boots on ice In North America, we have lots of such crazy fun-filled events. In Nova Scotia for instance, the annual Windsor Pumpkin Regatta features competitors racing across Lake Pesaquid in brightly decorated hollowed-out pumpkins. The famed Mar-

tha Stewart once almost participated in the race. There are scads of others too – such as bed races, tearing down snow-covered ski hills in canoes – even in specially designed cooking woks. In Canada, it’s our love of playing golf – not just during the warm weather on manicured green golf courses – but in the cold of winter on lakes covered with ice. There are tournaments everywhere now across Canada and in other cold climate countries.

About three decades ago, Sandra and I played in the Setting lake Ice Golf Tournament in Northern Manitoba. It’s where we owned a cottage for a few years, a place perhaps where Brit cheese rollers and thumb wrestlers would feel at home. Basically, it’s just golf on the ice – held in the late spring when temperatures are warming up and yet there are still a few feet of ice left on the lake.

The organizers mark out the holes with paint and non-golfers on their snowmobiles travel the expanse of white making sure each hole is stocked with refreshments. The balls used are usually bright orange in colour and it’s best to wear sunglasses to minimize snow blindness.

While Sandra is not a golfer, she won the tournament that year. She did so by a “little miscounting” of strokes in her “long game” and with a little help from one of her golfing mates in her “short game.” The

help came in the form of a pair of yellow boots that conveniently cupped each hole when Sandra was putting. And while some of the more serious golfers at Setting lake might not have agreed, the rules of the tournament were a lot like the Hare Pie Scramble and Bottle Kicking in Hallaton, England. “The rules were very simple; there weren’t any rules.” That certainly seemed appropriate in our view, for the real prize was the same for everyone – a great way to end a long winter.

Here in the U.K., people embrace such fun-loving “diversions.” I don’t think much ice or snow golf is played but if the game took off here, U.K. folk would add new, innovative twists.

In Scotland, all golfers might have to wear Sean Connery masks and wear kilts. In Wales (the land of song), male voice choirs might play a role out on the “ice greens.” In England, it’s likely Cheddar or Stilton would be involved.

We must save Churchill and the Bay line

BY STEVE ASHTON Few things define Manitoba more than Churchill and the Hudson Bay rail line. It has captivated the imagination of many and the opposition of more than a few. Even our current provincial borders were defined by the aspiration for our province to extend to the port of Churchill or the original planned terminus of the rail, Port Nelson.

On July 25, OmniTrax shocked the Town of Churchill and Manitobans with the sudden closure of the port. So the eternal debate resumes. What to do with Churchill? The answer is clear. As Manitobans we must do everything possible to reopen and develop the port.

Perhaps the answer starts from recalling how we get to where we are today.

Churchill and Hudson Bay has been key to Manitoba’s aspirations for nearly 150 years. As early as 1878, Premier Norquay’s government called on the federal government to build a rail line and extend Manitoba’s boundaries to Hudson Bay. It was part of the vision that also saw Manitoba seek to assert sovereignty over what is now Northwest Ontario as far east as the Lakehead.

Steve Ashton referred to the imperial Privy Council but we kept our aspirations of expansion, focusing on port and rail access to Hudson Bay. Prairie farmers saw the Hudson Bay rail line as a shorter route to Europe and a way to break CP’s rail monopoly. Starting in 1881 there were six unsuccessful railway charters for construction of the rail line. By 1908 the rail line reached to the new lumber industry in The Pas. The stage was set to push to the bay.

The establishment of Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1906 renewed Manitoba’s efforts to expand north. Again Manitoba faced the competing interests of Ontario. This time Manitoba was successful. In 1912 our borders were extended north.

We became the keystone

province that specifically included the Hudson Bay port options of Port Nelson or Churchill. Ontario got the consolation of a rail corridor to the ports if they so wished.

The next step was to build the rail line to the selected destination which, after much controversy, was Port Nelson at York Factory. Construction took place at great financial and human cost until it was suspended in 1917 because of the First World War. After the war there was renewed controversy over which port to use. Even though the construction had started at Port Nelson the decision was made to shift the rail line and build the port at Churchill as it was a natural port requiring less maintenance. There were renewed efforts to start construction including the “on to the Bay” campaign. With a minority government dependent on western progressives for support, construction was renewed and completed in 1929.

Over the years the port shipped virtually everything and anything. The British company the Dalgleish lines was a key part of this. Successive provincial governments promoted the port and in the

1970s Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan established the Port of Churchill Development Board. The port always faced opposition from the vested interests that sought to close the port and direct traffic to other ports but it had strong support from farmers and from the Hudson Bay Route Association.

So how did we end up where we are today? The first major change came when the federal Liberal government privatized the port by selling it for a reported $11 million in 1997 to OmniTrax which is owned by U.S. billionaire Pat Broe. After some promising moves initially, the track conditions deteriorated under OmniTrax. It took a $68 million federal provincial agreement in 2007 to get the track condition back to an acceptable level. Then came the biggest challenge in decades when the Harper government destroyed the Canadian Wheat Board, which provided more than 90 per cent of the shipments to the port. With nothing more than a five-year grain freight subsidy the port’s future was in jeopardy.

Which brings us to today. What to do about Churchill and the Bay line?

We cannot shut it down.

The rail line provides ac-

cess to many communities that lack all-weather road access. It also has so much potential. With climate change the port’s season can be much longer with shipping through the North West Passage or to Russia. Western Canada is on the verge of a major boom over the next decades with our strength in commodities, including the most strategic commodity, food and anything related to its production. Churchill can ship that food and much more.

Which raises the question, what exactly has the response been?

When the closure was announced the lack of consideration for Churchill was shocking. So was the lack of a clear plan. OmniTrax’s actions are beyond reprehensible. Perhaps this is part of Pat Broe’s strategy of being a “tough “ negotiator. Shutting down the port in the midst of attempting to sell it might be tough but foolish also comes to mind.

The Pallister government stayed silent at first. Then it tried to deflect attention by attacking our NDP government’s work in partnership with the Harper government to keep the port open in 2015 while OmniTrax sought a new buyer. Our action helped keep the port

open. The Pallister government’s inaction was clearly a factor in its closure.

As for the Trudeau government, it is time they admitted that this is a failed privatization. One key element was the lack of an ongoing commitment to investments in infrastructure. More fundamental is just how they could have sold such a strategic asset to a U.S. billionaire in the first place!

The solution is obvious.

Bring the port and the rail line back under Canadian, public ownership. This could take various forms including a port authority and First Nations ownership similar to the successful First Nations Keewatin Rail Company line to Pukatawagan.

We need to recognize that Churchill is not just a key part of our history but our future as well. It requires vision. The kind of vision that built this province. The kind of vision that is in such short supply today with OmniTrax and the federal and provincial governments.

The successful candidate will be certified for Part 9 and Part 3 of the Building Inspector Certification Program, and belong or be eligible to belong to the MBOA. The candidate will have a valid driver’s licence, and demonstrated time-management, recordkeeping and computer skills, including experience with database and word processing programs. The Building Inspector will possess an ability to interpret plans, specifications, policies, procedures, codes and applicable by-laws, and communicate effectively, both orally and in written format. The candidate must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, general public, contracts and utilities both consistently and tactfully.

The cost for Fenske and Ceppetelli to attend was $260. “I’d like to see our mayor invite the rest of the mayors from other cities to come discuss with us as well,� said Coun. Duncan Wong. “We have an industry closure so I’d like to see them coming here to help us, too.

Though consumers no doubt understand how buying from local merchants can benefit those merchants, few may grasp just how beneficial buying local can be to their entire communities.

In 2012, Civic Economics, an economic analysis and strategic planning firm, analyzed data from 15 independent retailers and seven independent restaurants, all located in Salt Lake City, comparing those businesses’ local economic impact with four national retailer chains and three national restaurant chains. The study found that the local retailers returned 52 percent of their revenue to the local economy, a figure that dwarfed the revenue returned by the national chains, which returned just 14 percent of revenue to the local economy. Restaurants provided an even bigger boost to local economies, returning 79 percent of their revenue compared to just 30 percent for the national chain restaurants.

The reasons for these disparities include local businesses spending more on local labor and relying more heavily on local service providers. So while buying local may be more convenient and eco-friendly, it also can greatly benefit local economies.

The benefits of making your own fruit and vegetable juices

BY KYLIE MATECHUK So you may have heard that a lot of people have turned to juicing to increase their quality of health. Jumping on the juicing bandwagon is not just a fad. People have been making their own juices for years to fight off a host of diseases and disorders. I remember my family buying one when I was really young, I read all the recipes and was just fascinated that you could make a drink that might help battle a cold or a bladder infection for instance. It was my first introduction to food as medicine.

Because of the insoluble fibre in fruits and vegetables, we can’t eat as much fruits and veggies as we need sometimes to help fight certain disorders. Juicing extracts the nutritious liquid of plants and discards the insoluble fibrous pulp, allowing us to consume more and therefore capitalize on its healing and cleansing abilities. We still get soluble fibre from juicing. Soluble fibre (like gums and pectins) will partially dissolve in water and form a type of gel. Soluble fibre absorbs digestive bile made by cholesterol, which creates even more digestive bile, which then helps to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol. It also can help moderate your blood glucose levels because it helps sugar to be more slowly absorbed, which is why some diabetics report juicing to be helpful to them. (Always check with your doctor though first!)

Having juiced almost my whole life, I have created juice cleanses that are more rigorous on liver and colon cleansing and help me a lot in achieving optimal health, better digestion and clearer skin. Any time you hear the word “cleanse” or “detox,” do your research, though.

Understand what you’re consuming and the affects it might have on your body. I would never recommend doing a juice cleanse for drug or alcohol rehab without supervision from professionals, and it is not something to rely on to lose weight. I advocate for holistic health, which promotes full body wellness.

When I first started, I would do a three-day juice cleanse once per month. Now I only do them when my body tells me I need to. I regularly drink fresh squeezed juice of all kinds, though.

For a beginner juicer, it’s important to not overwhelm yourself. There are many kinds of juicers to purchase, and I recommend starting small and inexpensive before you really start actively including juicing in your life.

The two styles of juicers are centrifugal (our storebought juicers you see today) where they extract the juice and discard the pulp through a mesh screen. You can find these at any Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, Co-Ops or stores that carry kitchen appliances.

Kylie Matechuk $100 to $600. If you’re lucky, you might find an old style one at a garage sale or flea market. Cold press juicers act to literally squeeze the liquid right out of the fruit or veggie. These are the juicers you will find at juice bars that offer cleanses or bottled juices.

The juice is clear and the pulp is very dry. They run very expensive from $5,000 to $50,000. Yes, you read that right! So start small!

And while making your own fruit juices (like apple and orange) is healthier than store-bought, keep in mind that fruit juices pack a lot more fructose or sugar than if you were to eat these fruits on their own. For one serving of orange juice you would have to juice four naval oranges.

When preparing juices for clients or for myself, I personally use vegetables primarily, as my cleanses are purpose-based, meaning my reasons to juice cleanse are to rid the body of toxins and impurities. When doing this, sugar needs to be limited. Depending on the circumstances, I might add a lemon or maybe a green apple to help sweeten it up just a little bit.

Remember to peel oranges or anything with a thick rind when juicing. Apples are OK to not peel, and it’s normal to get a thick foam in your juice from using store-bought juicers. Only juice fruits and veggies that have a high water content. Bananas for instance, cannot be juiced.

Carrots and cucumbers yield a lot of juice! So feel free to use these as your base, and add some greens like kale, spinach and romaine lettuce to increase your nutrient value, and add an apple or orange to sweeten it up.

You’ll be surprised at how good your concoctions taste!

Keep in mind that coniferous veggies like broccoli and cauliflower and even celery take over the taste of your juice. So use these in small quantities, or enjoy if you like the way these taste juiced!

Here are two of my favourites that will be out in my upcoming juice cleanse book, or feel free to search the web or the library for some great finds!

Cleanse Me Clean 2 gala apples (halved) 1 medium sized beet (quartered) 1/2” ginger 1/2 peeled lemon 3 carrots (Place all in the juicer in that order and enjoy!)

Tip: Keep in mind when juicing beets that your urine will turn pink until you get used to digesting beets.

Some people experience this their whole lives! Don’t be alarmed :) Rise and Shine 1 medium sized or 1/2 large peeled grapefruit 1/2” lemon 2 peeled oranges Tip: Use the low setting on your juicer for citrus fruits to

extract the most juice.

Another tip that I use: I juice my own apples, oranges and pineapples to add to my smoothies instead of store-bought juice. (So much cheaper and fresher!)

Juicing is great for improving your health and ensuring that you are consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables that are much needed in the standard western diet.

Certain medications counteract with certain foods, so when adding juice or especially if you were to incorporate a juice cleanse regimen in your diet, talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Making messes with motors: mud bogs christen new location

It was an afternoon of filthy fun for drivers and spectators alike at the Northern Manitoba Off-Road Association’s (NMORA) sixth-annual mud bogs Sept. 3-4, hosted at its new permanent location at the Thompson Motocross course located south of Thompson on Highway 6.

Drinks and hamburgers were provided by R.D. Parker Collegiate industrial arts students, who were raising money for an educational trip to Germany in 2017.

The first day saw drivers with trucks of all sizes challenge the bog, beginning with stock classes. Uncut and freshly shaped, the pit was too much for the stock competitors: Louis Saindon took home the stock title having conquered just under 44 feet of the pit’s total 220-foot distance, losing his bumper in the process; he was followed by Darnel Nast (40 ft) and Stephanie Fudge (33 ft).

The super stock six-cylinder competition saw the first completion of the pit by Greg Robson in a surprisingly subtle Wrangler, with a time of 14.84 seconds, followed by Donovan Heoppner (114.5 ft) and Terri Joy (111.5 ft).

Robson would continue on to claim not only first place in the modified eight-cylinder class, but come second in both super stock eightcylinder and modified sixcylinder classes as well, all in a machine equally at home in the grocery store parking

lot as it is covered in slop.

As lines of approach became more defined in the pit, crossings became more frequent: Peter Lennan took home the super stock eight-cylinder title in his country-gothic Dodge 1500 with a time of 12.044 seconds, followed by Robson (12.852 seconds) and Roland Becker (19.451 seconds).

There were only two entries in the modified sixcylinder category, and times slowed considerably: Rockie Joy took home first place at 16.845 seconds, followed by Robson at 18.643 seconds.

The pit was refreshed for the modified eight-cylinder category, causing some upset of strategy: while Robson would finally claim first prize with 11.031 seconds, his first run would only see him make it 25.5 ft through the pit. Likewise, second- and third-place drivers Kelly Kopeechuck (12.364 seconds) and Lennan (14.639 seconds) also failed to cross the pit on their first run.

The open class was, of course, the premium spectacle: Kopeechuck’s purposebuilt monster took home first prize with a whopping 7.428 seconds, followed by Matthew Silva (8.452 seconds) and Robson (10.733 seconds). Kopeechuck notes that open-class racing is “all about the truck.” If that’s the case, then perhaps the glory isn’t all his own: four other racers had come to help Kopeechuck put his winning machine together at the be-

ginning of the summer, during a mechanical bender that lasted throughout May long weekend. “I called the boys Friday night, and we didn’t sleep all weekend,” he said.

The Powderpuff class saw women step into the men’s trucks, and compete against their partner’s first runs (while the men’s category was permitted two runs, the women’s runs consisted of only one). Cherie Kopeechuck topped the category by trumping her husband Kelly’s first run by over three seconds (7.639 seconds), while Cheryl Lennan bested her husband Peter’s time by just over a tenth of a second (11.877 seconds).

But for all of the action, the most smiles emerged during the mud run, where children, and later adults, rushed the bogs themselves: while the children hunted for bright orange balls amidst the mud, it was the muddiest adult who took home the prize.

Sunday’s ATV and sideby-side events went by far more quickly: not only were there considerably fewer contestants, but the lighter off-road vehicles managed considerably better in the pit, meaning less time lost pulling vehicles out. Scott Leighton took home first prize in the 0-500 cc category with 18.14 seconds; in the 500-700 cc class, Raymond Compton took home gold with 16.859 seconds; in the 700 cc and up category, Devlin Martindale took home first with 10.725 seconds. The rainbow flag was raised above Thompson City Hall Sept. 12, marking the beginning of Thompson’s Pride Week, organized by Pride 55, celebrating the rights and contributions of LGBTQ members of our community.

Pride has previously been celebrated earlier in the summer in Thompson, in the month of June.

However, organizer Brielle Beardy-Linklater notes that membership turnover had threatened the event altogether this year after the loss of many core members. “The person who has organized Pride for the last two celebrations had stepped down. It was a rocky start because we started later, and planning anything in the summer in the north

is hard, with the lack of presence.”

But with the appearance of the festival in the communities of Portage la Prairie and Steinbach, Beardy-Linklater notes that the committee felt it was important to show solidarity. “We have to keep the momentum, to continue to promote inclusion and LGBTQ rights.”

Indeed, Steinbach’s entry into the LGBTQ movement prompted Pride 55 to adopt the most iconic of Pride events the world over: a Pride march. “With Steinbach’s permit being denied for their march, we wanted to show that we were in solidarity with them. It’s been a hard year for LGBTQ people, and we have to conquer adversity.”

in MacLean Park, kicked off by the Pride march beginning at 10 a.m. at the Thompson Regional Community Centre. Celebrations in the park will feature local entertainment and speakers, and there is a dance party social later in the evening.

Smook elected to represent council at inland ports conference

Council voted Sept. 6 to send Coun. Colleen Smook to represent the city at the 2016 Canadian Inland Ports Conference in Winnipeg Sept. 20-21.

The total cost for Smook’s attendance will be $1,780.97, including $630 for conference registration, $677.51 for airfare, $40 for taxis, $308.46 for hotel accommodations and a $125 per diem.

Smook was one of three councillors, along with Penny Byer and Judy Kolada, who had expressed interest in being the city’s representative at the conference. After Smook had been selected, Coun. Duncan Wong questioned the process.

“Before they destroy the ballots, I’d like to do an inspection,” said Wong, prompting Mayor Dennis Fenske to declare him out of order.

“We trust our administration to conduct the vote as requested, “ said Fenske. “That is questioning the integrity of our administration. I take great exception to that.”

One of the members of the public observing the meeting then called out, “I second it.”

“You don’t have a vote,”

said the mayor.

Other spectators then added their own comments, saying “What’s the use of us being here, then?” and “I also question the credibility of the administration.”

After voting was completed, a motion to destroy the ballots was out forward and approved, which led to another comment being called out by a spectator.

“If there’s any more comments from the gallery, I’ll ask you to be excused,” said Fenske.

The conference will focus on how inland ports create present and future economic benefits for the communities and provinces in which they are located and how Western Canadian inland ports compare to those in Europe, among other things.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR The Assistant Director shall assist in the administration of operations on a day to day basis. The successful candidate must possess strong writing skills and have extensive knowledge in proposal development. Candidates must have experience in staff supervision and evaluation procedures. The Assistant Director must also be able to make decisions within assigned authority and exercise confidentiality in all matters.

Job specifications: Under the supervision of the Ma-Mow-We-Tak Friendship Centre Executive Director, the Assistant Director will assist the Executive Director with the administration of operations; Review all proposals prior to submission to the Executive Director to ensure inclusion of all relevant information and support documentation; Prepares and submits proposals on behalf of the Friendship Centre as directed; Supervise and evaluate program and special project staff for quality in delivery of programs; Supervise and monitor program department activities and special events; Develop fiscal budgets for programs to ensure adequate funds available for implementation of designated programs; Oversee the budget process for all operations to ensure adequate resources are available; Ensure all financial reports are forwarded to appropriate funding sources; Examines monthly financial statements to ensure proper input of data; Assists Executive Director in preparation of fiscal budgets as directed; Prepare reports to funding sources as required; Requisition for approval and purchase of program material and equipment as required; Assist the Executive Director in completing assignments/directives as instructed; Issue directives and instructions to staff for improvements in services delivered; Research potential funding sources for financial support of programs and activities; Participates in the selection and hiring process of the Friendship Centre staff; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Post-secondary graduate with three years related experience preferred OR Grade XII graduate with a minimum of 5 years’ experience; Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills with extensive experience in proposal writing; Possess good managerial and administrative skills; Possess interpersonal skills with the ability to direct and supervise personnel; Possess a basic understanding of financial management; Ability to develop and organize program activities to related target groups; Computer experience with various software programs; Knowledge of the Aboriginal Culture and the ability to speak an aboriginal language considered an asset; Must possess a valid Manitoba Driver’s license.
