Former R.D. Parker Collegiate vice-principal and Addictions Foundation of Manitoba (AFM) northern regional director John Donovan joined a select group of prominent Thompsonites when he was announced as the 2015 Order of Thompson recipient at the Thompson Community Foundation’s fall gala at Riverlodge Place Sept. 26. Donovan is the fifth recipient of the honour, which has previously been bestowed on Volker Beckmann, Red Sangster, Gail and Arnold Morberg, Adrian deGroot and Ted Smook. A resident of Thompson since 1976, Donovan was
born in Timmins, Ont. and grew up in North Bay before coming to Northern Manitoba after completing undergraduate and graduate studies. His working life in Thompson began at RDPC where he was first employed as a counsellor. “John has always had a passion for kids, families and those affected by addictions,” said Mayor Dennis Fenske, who announced Donavan’s induction into the order, modelled on the Order of Canada. “Much of his counselling and programming was centred around addictions issues and those involved in addictions. He began the student match program, which paired high school students like Big Brothers
Big Sisters with elementary kids who were from addiction-affected families. Most years had 80 to 90 high school kids involved. Student match led to his establishing peer counselling and S.O.S., which was Students Offering Support. These programs led to the advent of the hug-ins in the mid ’80s which continued to the mid ’90s with as many as 300 teenagers at times spending time at the high school doing wellness and learning about problems related to substance use while developing coping, student support and wellness skills in an environment of trust and caring.” Donovan then went on to become a department head Continued on Page 7
