Charlene Dysart, recreation and wellness development consultant with the department of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs, and a certified fitness instructor with the Manitoba Fitness Council, has won the Manitoba Fitness Leader for this year. This is the first time the award has ever been won by a northern resident. To win this award nominees have to meet certain criteria. The criteria includes exhibiting leadership, displaying instructional methods, seeking further education, having networking skills, making a positive impact in the fitness world, promoting community involvement in fitness, and serves as an inspiration. Dysart said she was blown away, when she found out she won. “It feels pretty awesome, and exciting. I knew I was nominated, but going into it I didn’t really expect to be given the award. There are so many people in the province who are doing such amazing things, and I didn’t think it would come up here, and this far north.

I was very surprised and honoured.” Nominations were submitted to the Manitoba Fitness Council office, and a committee then picked Dysart as a winner, along with another winner from Winnipeg. This year was the first year where there was a tie for the award. Dysart was presented with her plaque and award on Oct. 5, during the Manitoba Fitness Council’s momentum conference. The award presented by

Stephanie Jeffrey, executive director for the Manitoba Fitness Council, has given Dysart the motivation to continue. “This has definitely inspired me to continue what I am doing. I want to expand what I am doing, and I am taking some new courses. Right now I am taking a yoga certification course and in November I am taking a personal training course. The whole experience has just shown me what I am doing is really beneficial

to the people I am working with in the community. It’s had a huge impact on myself personally, and I think I have grown a lot physically and mentally over the past four years.” Dysart started down this fitness path to be a better resource for community members, and completely fell in love with the practice. She says this award wouldn’t have been possible without the help of a few people. “I want to thank the Department of

Aboriginal and Northern Affairs. They have been very supportive of me taking the fitness training, and allowing us to support the community becoming fitness leaders. I want to thank my family. I am out of the house a lot, and they are very supportive. Thanks to the community organizations, and the local fitness instructors that have helped me organize fundraisers. The support has been really awesome, and if didn’t have it I wouldn’t be able to do a lot of these things. And then the people who take the courses, and come to the classes. Just hearing their stories and their feedback, is really rewarding and that gives me the extra push too.” Dysart also received the Soaring Eagle award this year at National Aboriginal Day in Thompson. That award recognizes and acknowledges aboriginal citizens who play an important role within the community. The YWCA board of Directors nominated Dysart for her dedication in making Thompson and surrounding areas healthier places to live.
