He was 39 years old and will be so sadly missed by a huge family & many friends.

He was a son, a brother, and foremost a father of two beautiful young girls, Alex and Sierra Steven had resided in Thompson for about the last 15 years and had been a labourer on many different jobs.

He was predeceased by his loving grandmother Josie and is survived by his mother Shirley and stepfather Daryl (Huber), his father Robert Campbell, sisters Shannon Heck, Leanna and Carly Campbell, Katrina Kelly, Tiffany Noel, Tera Huber, 1 brother Colin Huber and his 2 daughters Alex Campbell and Sierra Campbell.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 27 at the Boardman-Northland Funeral Home.

Services are from 11 - 12 with a private family burial to take place immediately after.

There will be a luncheon and gathering of family and friends at 1:00 in the Selkirk Room at the Burntwood Hotel.

Syphilis outbreak challenges Northern Manitoba health authority

A continuing syphilis outbreak has proved a challenge for Northern Manitoban healthcare providers, with 21 confirmed cases since September 2014, compared to a usual range between zero and four cases.

Dr. Michael Isaac, medical officer of health with the Northern Regional Health Authority (NRHA), says that tracking and containing the spread of the disease has been challenging for a variety of reasons. “I’d say that we are seeing sustained community transition, and despite our efforts are not seeing our case count go down.”

Syphilis in any situation is a challenging infection to contain during an outbreak, as it has a relatively long incubation period, and individuals who have contracted the virus may not display symptoms for up to three months. “There’s a lot of time for them to spread the disease to other people.”

But the northern context has presented its own set of challenges, as the infection is spreading into populations which have not been typically associated with a high risk of syphilis. Isaac explains how outbreak management is typically conducted: “In outbreaks, you try and target interventions to specific subgroups.” Core populations at the highest risk of infection and transmission are identified and targeted for treatment, education, and prevention. From here, the spread of the disease can be traced and gradually brought under control from the inside out.

“For example, in Winnipeg, the outbreak is very much concentrated in the ‘men who have sex with men’ community.” Much like the HIV outbreak of the 1980s, men who have sex with men have been identified as a group being affected by the Canada-wide urban outbreak. Other high-risk groups are those who are HIV-positive, have high numbers of sexual partners, or who engage in sex anonymously, regardless of sexual orientation.

“So if you know where syphilis is being mainly transmitted, you can intervene in a more targeted way, in terms of offering testing, issuing condoms, more messaging, etc.”

However, the case for the north is far less clear-cut.

Previopusly, Isaac had indicated that 40 per cent of cases emerging in the north are emerging in women, as opposed to urban Winnipeg, where women make up a mere 5 per cent of syphilis patients. “Our outbreak is most definitely a heterosexual outbreak, and we haven’t been able to identify those specific places or risk factors at this point in time, where we can really do a targeted intervention that could snuff out the outbreak. We’ve had a very aggressive response to treating the outbreak itself, but we’ll have to wait and see what our numbers actually show.”

There are some elements, at least, which are working in the NRHA’s favour. In urban settings, tracking down potentially infected contacts has been complicated by casual dating apps and social media: “Apps like Tinder or Grindr, people can go on them, find people in their vicinity who want to have sex, and they may not ever know that person’s identity, or their name, which makes it extremely difficult for contact tracing.” Yet despite urban complications, Isaac notes that their use is not nearly as prevalent in this region. “We haven’t seen the same degree of social media use up here in the north. We did have one or two cases who had mentioned it, but for us that hasn’t been a major driver.”

Regardless, with nearly all predictable indicators absent from the northern outbreak, authorities are left to control the disease on a case-by-case basis. “Right now, the biggest risk factor we have is geography. Gillam and Thompson are the primary communities affected.”

For now, the NRHA has implemented an “enhanced surveillance” strategy, which involves extensive interviews with both direct patients and contacts which the patient may have made while infected. An epidemiologist from the Public Health Agency of Canada to help analyze the transmission data which the NRHA is collecting as more cases creep up. Along with testing and treatment, the NRHA will also undertake informing past sexual

partners who may be at risk, though personal involvement is permitted if desired. Despite the Canada-wide issue, Isaac is unaware of any federal program to help curb the outbreak. Health care in Canada is largely the responsibility of provinces.

Isaac recommends individuals engaged in “risky” sex should get tested every three months, not only for syphilis, but all sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, Isaac makes it clear that a low-risk lifestyle does not make an individual invulnerable.

“We’re moving away from a risk-based approach in terms of testing for STIs, because it can be very difficult to know your own risk. It’s obvious if you have multiple sexual partners. But we do know, for example, some females thought that they were in a monogamous relationship, but in fact they weren’t. So, they thought their risk was low, when in fact it wasn’t.”

There is good news for those who test positive for the virus, however: “Fortunately for us, syphilis is not resistant. It’s very easily treatable, through a single dose of penicillin, which we inject.”

What is syphilis?

Syphilis is a bacterial infection spread through sexual intercourse, or congenitally from an infected mother to a developing fetus.

How can I tell if I have syphilis?

Syphilis develops in three stages: Primary: Syphilis begins as an often-painless chanre sore on the contacted area (mouth, genitals, rectum, etc), which appears between two to ten weeks after exposure. This is the first outward sign of infection Secondary: The infection spreads to other parts of the body. An itchless rash may appear on the body, along with additional chancre sores.

Other, less common symptoms include aching, fatigue, joint pain, and patchy hair loss.

The rash may disappear within two to six weeks.

Latent: The virus remains in the body without symptom for up to 30 years, and may not progress to the tertiary stage. After one year, the bacteria is no longer infectious.

Tertiary: 30 to 40 per cent of syphilis patients reach the tertiary stage. The virus re-activates, and attacks the body in a variety of areas, whether the heart, lungs, brain, or any other area. Symptoms depend on the attacked area. Once the syphilis has reached this stage, the infection can still be cured, but the damage done is irreversible.

What is the test for syphilis?

- Patients presenting with chancre sores are swabbed at the sore. Once a sore is present, the detection of syphilis is immediate.

- Patients who believe they have had contact with an infected person, but do not present symptoms, can be administered a blood test. A blood test will not detect an infection for two weeks after exposure.

What should I do if I think I have syphilis?

- Do not have sex until you are tested - Report to your nearest health care centre - Inform your health care centre of any sexual partners How is syphilis treated?

- Syphilis, if detected prior to tertiary damage, is easily treated through single injection of standard antibiotics

JMH First Aid & CPR Services will be celebrating CPR month by offering free First Aid and CPR courses for transient residents of Thompson.

The courses will be held at the Lakeview Inn and Suites on November 28, 29, and 30, from 9:00am-5:00pm.

Participants will receive a certificate confirming their First Aider 1 certification, as well a personal first aid kit. A hot lunch will be provided each day for those who attend.

Jesse and Dustin Horodecki have lived in northern Manitoba for a number of years, and their experiences have highlighted the need for basic medical education in the transient community, and note that transient citizens of Thompson face a unique set of circumstances; Not only are they more significantly more exposed to the elements than the average resident, unfamiliar observers are more likely to misinterpret the signs of medical distress. Symptoms of stroke and diabetic shock, including slurred speech and a loss of motor co-ordination,

are easily confused with intoxication, particularly when there’s no familiarity with the individual.

“I see a lot of people just drive by,” Dustin says. “Justifiably or not. I’m not judging anyone, but they need to be able to take care of each other, because they’re a community in themselves, their own family.”

Jesse recounts another extreme example: “Last year was a perfect example, where a teenage boy came knocking on the door of the YWCA, and they were hesitant to let him in, because he was nude. But it was because he was hypothermic.” Paradoxical undressing is a phenomenon where severely hypothermic, often delerious individuals will feel profoundly hot; Without an understanding of the condition, victims often begin to undress, dramatically accelerating the encroaching hypothermia.

Jesse hopes that the courses will not only help the displaced community take care of each other, but also ease interactions between them and emergency healthcare providers: “CPR can be a very frightening thing, not

only for the person providing it, but for the people watching. Not everyone understands what it is you’re doing.”

She hopes the courses will provide the skills and confidence for less fortunate residents not only to help each other, but all members of the community: “The transient citizens of Thompson are are the very first people to offer help in an emergency uptown. If they were confident in their knowledge in first aid, they could provide more help than just comfort.”

Dustin hopes that this is only the first of ways which JMH will give back to the community. “A lot of people don’t realize that November is CPR month, and we want to make an annual contribution back to the community every November. It’s just our way of thanking the community for letting us be the business that we are.”

The Kelsey Generation Station has been awarded the Snowmobilers of Manitoba (SnoMan) Snowmobile Excellence Award, for Outstanding Support by a Non-Snowmobiling Related Business. The Excellence Award is an annual award which recognizes individuals and organizations in Manitoba which have made significant contributions towards promoting, facilitating community, or providing services within the sport.

Kelsey Generating Station was nominated by the Thompson Trailbreakers for their annual support services along the Kelsey trail network. “They provide us with a place to stay at the beginning of the season when we’re going out there to get the trail open, since the groomer can take sixteen, seventeen hours to get there. They’ve provided accommoda-

tions, food, and fuel.” Since the opening of the trail, Kelsey has also offered the same services for anyone using the trail throughout the season, aside from accommodations. “Even if you’re not planning on using their services, you can call just so they know you’re out there, so if you don’t arrive, they can send out a search party, all in the name of safety.”

Representatives from Manitoba Hydro were awarded a plaque at the fifth annual Snoman Congress in Winnipeg, on November sixth and seventh. Manitoba Hydro uses the trails extensively themselves; along with regular maintenance activities, it has become common for local employees to commute to work by trail.

Thompson Trailbreakers have also resumed their regular meetings as the sledding season approaches. Their first planned event will be their Annual Trailbreakers Poker Derby, on February 14.

In my own words: courage to change To the Editor: “Courage to Change.” Do we believe in change? Yes! Or does the “courage to change” come by thoughts only?

Well, undecided paths will continue in our lives and to be willing to change in the progress is an act of courage.

We are the only ones who can change ourselves. We must have courage to let go of unnecessary quarrelsome tributes in life so we can make room for the changes of better things to come into our lives. Often it is personified by individuals who take risks in try something new, knowing there may be failures, struggles and steady interruptions in completing changes. Our lives are filled unnoticed with “courage to change” because of the decisions we make. Why not move forward today with an open mind and take that ultimate courage to stop what we shouldn’t do?

Salvation Army kettle campaign increases in importance in light of greater food bank usage A

fter an extended fall that allowed Thompson residents a later glimpse of green grass and bare pavement than they’re normally accustomed to, the joyful autumn holidays of Thanksgiving and Halloween and the sombre Remembrance Day are behind us and, with winter having arrived in earnest, it’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.

Already there have been craft fairs and bake sales and the Christmas parade is coming up this weekend, the day before the national celebration that surrounds the Grey Cup CFL championship game. Operation Red

Nose volunteers will soon be on the roads making sure that partygoers don’t end their revelry in a jail cell or worse and shoppers are already seeing the red kettles of the Salvation Army in malls and at other stores around town, dutifully attended by volunteers giving freely of their time so that the organization can hopefully raise enough money to fund Christmas hampers this December and a full year of food bank operations in 2016. To achieve this goal, it needs those who are able to open their wallets in support of a good cause to pitch in $85,000 – about $6.50 for each of Thompson’s

13,000-odd residents.

It’s a shame that in a country like Canada, seen by people from developing countries as one of the richest in the world, that charitable institutions like food banks are even necessary, but they are. What’s more, despite the fact that the nation’s government has been flush enough to reduce the GST and offer income tax credits for children’s sports and arts programs, as well as other things like home renovations, the problem isn’t getting any better. In March of 2008, national food bank use reached a low of 675,735 people from coast to coast to coast.

Since then, it’s risen 26 per cent, and in March of this year 852,137 people have used the services of a food bank in Canada, with one-third of those being children. In Manitoba alone, 63,791 people were helped by food banks last March, an increase of more than 2,000 people over the same month in 2014 and 57.6 per cent more than needed to use a food bank in 2008. Of those, 42 per cent were children. Here in Thompson, an average of 155 people used the Salvation Army food bank per month in 2014. By this past July, the number rose to 220 people.

Thankfully, most

people in Canada and most residents of Thompson have never known what it’s like to open up their cupboards and find them bare and to make the choice to swallow their pride and ask for help at the food bank. And those who do aren’t exactly the people we may think they are. While 46 per cent of households who make use of food banks receive provincial social assistance benefits and 18 per cent receive disability-related income supports, seven per cent receive most of their income from pensions and 16 per cent earn the majority of their money from working.

Giving more to the local food bank won’t solve the problem of people going hungry.

That will require government policy changes to ensure that people have enough money to meet their everyday needs.

Giving more to food banks might even make it easier for governments to deny the depth and breadth of the problem of people going hungry.

But if we don’t dig deep enough collectively to support the Salvation Army with the money it needs to operate next year, people will end up going hungry in a city that not so long ago had the highest discretionary income in Canada.

Local business owner Kelly Bindle carrying Progressive Conservative flag in spring election

Current MLA Steve Ashton won’t be the only longtime Thompsonite seeking a spot in the provincial legislature when election day rolls around in April as he’ll be up against local business owner and 1983 R.D. Parker Collegiate valedictorian Kelly Bindle.

The operator of engineering consulting firm Bindle Engineering Limited, which he established in 2006, and of Ripple Rock Meat Shop since its opening in 2013, Bindle was born and raised in the city. His mother Grace Bindle, who still lives in the home the candidate grew up in across from Juniper School, is a retired teacher and his late father

Bindle was acclaimed as the Progressive Conservative candidate for Thompson at a nomination meeting in Winnipeg last May, about a year after he became active with the party.

And while he didn’t always envision himself as a candidate for elected office, he says that everyone is involved in politics whether they realize it or not.

“If you don’t get involved you’re governed by those who do,” he said in an interview Nov. 19. “If you go in with integrity and maintain integrity throughout it’s a noble way to live your life.”

Bindle says that under the NDP government that’s been in power since 1999, Manitobans have been paying more and getting less.

“I want to work towards tax relief,” says Bindle, noting that taxes are higher in this province than in its western neighbour Saskatchewan. “The could actually put a kid through university on the money they save from taxes [compared to Manitoba].”

The PC candidate feels that the province’s north isn’t living up to its potential.

“People in the north are fit, friendly, hard-working and caring,” Bindle says.

“They don’t want a handout. They want opportunity. I believe they want a change for the better.”

Among the changes Bindle says the Progressive Conservative party will bring in if they are elected as Manitoba’s next government are accountability in government, value for contracts with proper tendering, as well as a reversion to the previous provincial sales tax (PST) of seven per cent, along with a shorter and less costly route for Manitoba Hydro’s Bipole III transmission line, which will result in “tremendous savings” for taxpayers not only in construction costs but in lower annual maintenance costs. He also says control of Manitoba Hydro would be given back to its management employees.

“Nobody wants to privatize Manitoba Hydro,” Bindle says. “We don’t want to bankrupt it the way the NDP seem to.”

Another change the PCs would bring in would be more efficiently planned infrastructure expenditures to get away from the “bustbust-bust-boom” approach that’s currently in place, which he says sees the boom years coincide with elections.

One area of particular concern to Bindle is health care.

“The lack of health care in the north is pathetic,” he says, noting that there aren’t enough hospital beds for seniors and that those who receive home care may receive it for as little as 15 minutes a day and have to

go without it on holidays.

Bindle says a PC government would simplify and strengthen health care using a patient-first approach so everybody can receive the care they need when they need it and that it would also invest in programs like a recruitment and retention initiative for physicians in rural communities.

Bindle knows a lot of people in Thompson thanks to living here a long time and being active in organizations like the Royal Canadian Legion but he says there are many newer residents he hasn’t met and he’s looking forward to meeting them between now and the election when he goes out knocking on doors to introduce himself and listen to residents’ concerns.

A focus on listening is one of the things he says attracted him to the PC party, which he stresses is not affiliated with the Conservative Party of Canada.

The party wants candidates to hear and deliver the concerns of the people and not the other way around.

“You talk to the people, you find out the issues and you talk to us,” is what his instructions are, Bindle says.

Manitoba is lagging behind other provinces in areas such as hospital wait times and education scores and ahead in areas like crime rates, says Bindle, arguing that government waste is threatening frontline services. He notes that the province’s credit rating was downgraded

by Moody’s in July which means more money is going to pay debt than before.

The Progressive Conservative party wants to introduce legislation that would see the premier and cabinet ministers have their salaries rolled back 20 per cent if the province runs a deficit as a way to encourage balanced budgets.

Bindle feels the current government spends too much money promoting itself within the province when it should be taking steps like ensuring meaningful consultation with First Nations and Métis people to create certainty for companies in sectors like mining exploration.

“There’s plenty of steady growth signs but few signs of steady growth,” he says.

A key to the province’s future is ensuring opportunities are available for all and particularly for aboriginal youth, Bindle says.

And though he knows he faces a formidable challenge in the form of current MLA Ashton and that his party faces a battle against a government seeking a fifth consecutive term, Bindle is optimistic.

“Imagine better, believe in better, expect better because change for the better is coming,” he says.

Vale’s Manitoba Operations will stop smelting and refining nickel in 2018, according to a report by Reuters.

Mark Scott, Vale’s Manitoba Operations mining and milling director, told the news agency Nov. 18 while at the Manitoba Min-

ing and Minerals convention that once the mill can produce and ship nickel concentrate, the company will cease its smelting and refining activities in Thompson.

Vale first announced in 2010 that it would be shutting down its smelter and refinery by 2015. About two years later, the com-

pany announced that the coming closure, a result of federal sulphur dioxide emissions standards, would not come until at least the end of 2015. In October 2014, Vale said it had reached a deal with the federal government that would allow the smelter and refinery to operate until the end of 2018.

“We have a tentative agreement with the federal government to allow for the operation of the smelter up to Jan. 1, 2019, until such time as the concentrate load-out facility is completed,” said Manitoba Operations manager of corporate affairs and organizational development Ryan Land at that time.

Reuters also reported that Vale would finish a feasibility study on the extension of the Thompson ore body in early 2016 and then put the project on hold until nickel prices improve.

The news agency asked Scott if Thompson nickel operations were losing money but he declined to answer the question. Scott

also told Reuters that the company will expand the tailings area in Thompson.

The price of nickel was about C$5.40 per pound on Nov. 18.

Reuters reported that Vale, the world’s largest nickel producer, which also produces iron ore, reported a third quarter net loss of $2.1 billion in October.

Student’s of R.D. Parker’s Hope, Hands, Hearts (H3) social justice group attended We Day Manitoba at Winnipeg’s MTS Center on November 16, recogniz-

ing the volunteer efforts of young people across Manitoba.

Roughly 16, 000 students attended the event, organized by Free the Children, an international charity which sponsors impoverished

communities around the world by promoting education, health care, and infrastructure support in rural communities around the world. The event featured inspirational speakers, from celebrities such as Oscar

winner and humanitarian Marlee Matlin and actor Henry Winkler (Fonzie, Happy Days), to individuals who have overcome extreme hardship, like a dual appearance by Amanda Lindhout, the Canadian

journalist kidnapped in Somalia for 460 days, and Rinelle Harper, who was assaulted and nearly killed on the banks of the Assiniboine River.

through fundraising and community work. RD Parker students undertook various fundraising efforts, such as canvassing, serving dinners at galas, and sales at the school, and thereby contributed to the building of schools in Ghana and Sierra Leone, as well as well as for school kits for students in Haiti. Every year, the group picks a new theme for fundraising; This year’s theme was education, while last year’s campaigning focused around women’s empowerment.

In particular, H3 cochair Priyanka Vyas earned a special mention from Winnipeg Free Press columnist Jen Zoratti; Priya has been an active member of the group since 2011, though her interest in humanitarianism stretches back much farther: “I’ve travelled to a lot of countries outside of Canada, and I’ve always witnessed a lot of families struggling for basic needs. Because I’m so fortunate, I felt it was important to give back, and when I came to high school, I saw there was the opportunity to join this group, in which I can use their resources to help others.”

Priya would like to let Thompson know of the work which Hope, Hands, Hearts are doing, fundraising for a wide variety of international causes, and that donations are accepted yearround.

Man dead, woman injured after Thompson RCMP officer fires shots

A man is dead and a woman seriously injured after a Thompson RCMP officer fired shots around 2 a.m. Saturday morning, November 21.

The officer pulled over a vehicle that was being driven erratically after a brief pursuit. As he was approaching the vehicle, the driver accelerated and the vehicle hit the officer who discharged his weapon, killing the driver, who was pronounced

dead at the scene. The woman, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transferred to hospital in Winnipeg for treatment of her injuries. Three other women were passengers in the vehicle; two did not suffer any injuries, while the other sustained minor injuries unrelated to gunshots and was released from hospital after treatment.

The officer involved in the shooting was taken to hospital for minor injuries and released.

The RCMP notified the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) of the shooting. The IIU has assumed responsibility for the investigation and has investigators at the scene in Thompson. Because there was a fatality, the IIU will be requesting the appointment of a civilian monitor from the Manitoba Police Commission.

The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving on- or off-duty police officers in Manitoba.

King Miners undefeated string ends after splitting series with Islanders

The Thompson King Miners saw their undefeated start to the Norman minor Hockey association midget AA league season end at six games when the Cross Lake Islanders handed them their first loss at home Nov. 20 but they rebounded from three goals down to take the second game of the series the following day.

Three third period goals gave the Islanders a 7-5 victory Nov. 20. Carter Halcrow evened the score at five apiece with a long slapper that sailed past several players and goalie Kenton Brass. Quinton Scatch gave Cross Lake the lead with his third goal of the game on a power play with 7:28 to play and then added some insurance less than a minute later when he made a slap pass to Halcrow for the game’s final goal.

The two teams started slowly in the first period, with Alex Murray corralling a rebound at the side of the net and putting it past Islanders’ goal-

tender Jamie Anderson to open the scoring about 13 minutes into the game.

Scatch’s first with 24.4 seconds left before the first intermission made it a 1-1 game.

Murray’s second off the opening faceoff of the second period gave the King Miners another lead but Justin Dorion responded 28 seconds later. Jerome Linklater’s shorthanded tally about five minutes later made it 3-2 for Thompson, but Scatch replied after just 46 seconds, only to see Trent North put the king Miners ahead again just 14 seconds later. Brass made 41 saves in Thompson’s net while Jamie Anderson had 25 saves for the win.

The rematch Saturday afternoon saw Cross Lake jump out to a 3-0 first period lead thanks to a string of King Miners heading to the penalty box. Dorion got things started with a power

play goal on a deflected shot shortly after Thompson’s Murray received six minutes for roughing and butt-ending. A tripping call gave the Islanders a two-man advantage and Halcrow scored before the midway mark of the period. Jayden Bayer received eight minutes for high sticking, cross checking and head contact shortly after Murray was assessed a 10-minute misconduct and Cross Lake scored again to make it 3-0.

An apparent goal by the Islanders a few minutes later was disallowed.

It was Cross Lake’s turn for a penalty-box parade in the second period and they had already received a pair of 10-minute misconducts and a game misconduct when Trent North got the King Miners on the board during a 5-on-3 power play less than four minutes into the period. and police called in to ensure nothing happened as the teams left the ice and headed to their respective dressing rooms.

Cross Lake’s Friday night win left them briefly tied with the King Miners at the top of league standings with 10 points but Saturday’s victory put Thompson back ahead.

The Northstars put on a thrilling performance last weekend with a 6-1 victory against the Pembina Valley Hawks on Saturday, and a 5-6 loss on Sunday.

Saturday night’s game opened with what could only be described as an unusually civilized first period, with only two penalties handed out, and only one for any sort of player violation. While the action swung heavily from one side of the ice to the other, and there was no shortage of shots on net, neither side managed to land a goal before the first buzzer. The score at the end of the first period was 0-0, 9 shots for the Northstars, 11 for the Hawks.

The Northstar’s local games have seen them burn strong in the early game, only to struggle to maintain their momentum later, both in the game and in the weekend. But whatever energy the Northstars saved in the first period this time clearly paid off as the second period saw a dramatic change: Micheal Markus landed the first goal of the game at 7:14, and four minutes later, Keith Monias and Lance Laycock each scored power play goals not a minute apart. The Hawk’s Caleb Unrau managed to sneak in what would be the Hawk’s only goal of the game mid-period, bringing the score at the end of the second to 3-1, shots 21-29.

The fury continued well into the third period, leaving the Hawks with little opportunity to push against the Northstar’s net. The Northstars’ Tony Apetagon scored

two goals in a row, three minutes apart, supplemented with William Lutz’s score at 9:25. The Hawk’s would have no more successes that night, and the game ended with a score of 6-1 for the Northstars, shots 33-39.

The second night began with a similar optimism; in three minutes, the Northstar’s Lance Laycock scored the first goal of the game, and the only goal of the first period. But while the Hawks only managed four shots on net within the period, it was clear their stance was a more aggressive one that afternoon; players were limping off the ice from the outset after a particularly hard check, and every period would see at least one broken stick.

At the end of the first, the score was 1-0, shots 19-4.

The outlook only improved in the second period, with two goals by Micheal Markus just over thirty seconds apart halfway through the period, and with no shots taken by either side for almost ten minutes, it seemed like the Northstars would walk away with another win.

Then, out of thin air, devastation: the Hawks score three times in the final minute, with goals by Everett Bestland, Wyatt Sabourin, and Caleb Unrau. The second period finished with a jarring score of 3-3, shots 30-13.

The riveting third period saw a vicious back and forth: In under a minute and a half, three goals had been scored, alternating between two goals by the Hawks from Everett Bestland and Samuel Krushel, and a Northstar goal

by Tristan Galarneau. Troy Lehmann also scored for the Hawks in the third at 7:16, and the Northstars managed to shrink the gap with a goal from Keith Monias at 9:49.

Operation Red Nose Host Pre-Season Kick-Off KACPER@THOMPSONCITIZEN.NET

Operation Red Nose (ORN) hosted it’s seventeenth annual kick-off on November 13, with seasonal operations beginning on November 27. Volunteers are encouraged to pick up volunteer forms at the Boys and Girls Club of Thompson, CHTM, or download them from the Operation Red Nose Facebook group, or by email at ornthompson@outlook.com.

Operation Red Nose is a volunteer program which takes place every year during the holiday season to provide merrymakers with a safe alternative to impaired driving, by providing shuttle services for would-be drivers and their vehicles throughout operating nights on a donation basis. Donations are distributed to youth-oriented community organizations at the end of the campaign.

Blake Ellis, City Councillor and Chair of Public Safety, was present to thank ORN for their yearly effort: “It’s always important to make sure everyone gets home safe, especially around Christmas. If you’re even going to have a drink,

I’d suggest not driving that night.” As CHTM’s Tony Taylor points out, there’s no shortage of demand for the service during the holiday season, and never enough volunteers to fill it: “It can take a while to answer those calls, and last year, some people just got tired of waiting. I like to think that those people found a safe ride home, but in reality, a lot of them probably didn’t. I’m challenging all local Thompson community groups, whether it be charitable groups, businesses, or even sports groups, to get some volunteer forms filled out, so they can become a team and help our community.”

Few volunteers in the room would tell you that they didn’t enjoy their time with Operation Red Nose. Along with providing a safe ride home, Operation Red Nose is a charity program, dividing the donations they receive among youth-oriented community organizations. Last year, ORN contributed to the Troy Anand Fund, Albert’s Fund, Boys and Girls Club of Thompson, Air Cadets, and the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities. “In order to be eligible for receiving funds, you must assemble a team and volunteer.

Last year the campaign raised $5000, a slow year by most accounts. Co-ordinators hope to bring that number back up to $10, 000, the amount raised two years ago in 2014.

There’s roles for all schedules and all ages, as Honorary Chair Bobby Montean notes: “We’ve had people who have just picked up our food for us, or if you don’t want to be out and about on the road, there’s phones that need to be answered.

We’ve also had youth groups from the high school that have volunteered some nights, coming out to answer the phones, help set up our food, or clean up after us. There’s a place for all ages.”
