Thompson’s Walmart store finally earned its Supercentre status May 16 after eight months’ worth of interior and exterior renovations. While the store remained open throughout the conversion, other than a couple weeks in October due to a fire, Thursday’s “grand reopening” event saw the debut of new departments like a bakery and deli counter. In the weeks leading up to this reopening, produce and meat sections were also completed and stocked. Additionally, the store’s layout is also completely changed, with new signs and colours, different light fixtures and wider aisles to accommodate more customers. Walmart Canada corporate affairs spokesperson Felicia Fefer said converting to a Supercentre created approximately 40 in-store jobs and 150 trade and construction jobs. The store will be donating $1,000 to Wapanohk Community School in honour of its Supercentre upgrade. Thompson’s Walmart opened for business in 1994.
