The wicked winter weather that descended on Thompson and much of the rest of Manitoba early last week and didn’t relent for the better part of three days shut down businesses and forced essential services to rely on unconventional equipment and deal with staff shortages until roads were clear and people could once again begin to go about their regular daily routines.

The blizzard had a significant effect on Thompson’s municipal government, which shut down recreation facilities such as the Vale Regional Com-

munity Centre and Norplex Pool from March 7-9 and also saw transit operations suspended over those same three days and garbage and recycling collection suspended March 7 for the rest of the week before resuming their regular schedule March 13. City Hall itself was closed March 8.

The provision of vital services such as ambulance transport continued throughout the blizzard with the help of two Bombardier snowcats that were loaned to Thompson Fire & Emergency Services (TFES)

by Manitoba Hydro’s Thompson operations and helped firefighter/paramedics make 35 trips, including

emergencies, at least one of which was a mater of life and death.

“Without the snowcats, at least one person wouldn’t be alive today,” said city communications officer Kacper Antoszewski in an email March 13.

To return roads to driveable condition as quickly as possible, the city had 15 to 20 pieces of equipment on the job, including some provided by Smook Contractors, and crews were out clearing roads until 5:30 a.m. from Tuesday night to Wednesday morning and out again until midnight on Wednesday.

For the Northern Regional Health Authority

(NRHA), the main impact of the blizzard was on staffing levels at the Thompson General Hospital.

“We had a lot of staff that were unable to make it to work,” said NRHA communications co-ordinator Twyla Storey. “Wednesday was the worst day.”

Despite the challenges, however, managers made do by reassigning staff from areas with more workers to those with less and employees with vehicles that were able to navigate through the deep snow provided transportation to other employees who do not. There were also nurses and doctors who stayed overnight in the hospital

after their shifts had ended to ensure that there would be adequate staff on site for the morning shift.

“The team in Thompson is fantastic at the hospital for pulling together,” said Storey.

The Thompson RCMP detachment had a full complement of members on duty during the blizzard and made use of their trucks and other equipment like snowmobiles to respond to calls and to help other people who were stuck on snow-covered roadways.

“The key for us was it didn’t have a huge effect in responding to calls because the call volume was low,” Continued on Page 11

At the age of 57, Ginette passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Ginette was predeceased by her parents Lucien & Franciose Hamel and her granddaughter Jenna She is survived by her loving husband Robert, sons: Marc (Sydney), Christopher (Amy) and daughter Lori-Anne. As well as her beautiful grand children: Christa, Christopher Jr. (CJ), Marc Jr. , Landen, Harlee, Mia, and Nevaeh.

Ginette will be forever missed by her friends whom she considered sisters: Clare, Dee, Brenda and Noella.

They put up a good battle down to the final moments of their season but the midget AA Thompson King Miners fell a couple of goals and one win short of adding a provincial championship banner to their Norman league championship and regular season pennant as hosts of Hockey Manitoba’s rural midget AA/A provincial championships March 10-12.

The King Miners fell 4-3 to the Beausejour Blades in the final game at provincials March 12, scoring twice in the final 12 minutes to reduce a three-goal deficit to a single tally but they were

unable to get the equalizer to send the game to overtime.

Keistin Saunders scored the last goal of the King Miners’ season, pouncing on a rebound as Blades’ netminder Justin Powers tried to dive back into position with 3:29 left in the third period. Gordie Reuther had gotten Thompson’s second goal with 11:32 left to play, just 31 seconds after Tanner Chamberlin got what proved to be the winner for Beausejour, taking a pass from Ryan Piwniuk to put the puck in the net before King Miners’ goalie Kenton Brass could make it across the crease. OBITUARIES PATRICIA ELAINE WILLSON (NEE LENNOX) December 28, 1937 - February 27, 2017 Pat passed peacefully at home with her family after a brief fight with pancreatic cancer. Pat was predeceased by her son Jefferson, husband George Willson, and parents Hugh and Peigi Lennox. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Beth Tutiah, sister Sue (Wayne) McCartney of Thompson, nieces Karen and Heather (Paajoe) and grand nephews Lennox and Asher.

Pat was a graduate of St. Boniface Nursing School. She worked ER and Childrens floor. When her children were older she returned to nursing at Deer Lodge, Seven Oaks and Bethania Nursing Home.

Pat was kind and caring. She never complained about a problem.

She looked for a solution. She volunteered in many capacities over the years. Since retirement she had been active with the St. Agnes Health Guild of Children’s Hospital, worked the Teddy Bear picnic or the Book Mart. She did what she could to help others.

Her weekly exercise classes kept her active. In the summer she would be out at the Tuxedo Lawn Bowling Club. In winter it was Wednesday afternoon curling. She loved to walk to City Park as part of her day.

Pat travelled extensively with George. Later she teamed up with Beth or Wayne and Sue. She loved meeting new places and learning more about the world.

Pat said she was happy with her life. She’d been lucky to travel, have great friends, fun times. She spent her last Christmas at Paint Lake with her family.

Pat said goodbye to her family and friends at a Celebration of Life held on January 28 at Charleswood United Church. Pat enjoyed the stories and wishes of the many who attended. She felt fortunate to say her last good byes. Rest in Peace Pat.

Michael Groinus scored twice on power plays for the Blades in the second period, making it a 3-1 game when he skated in from the side boards 1:34 before the second intermission. His first tally, scored from the same area, came at the midway point with 17 seconds left in a King Miners penalty.

Jonathan Saunders reduced the Blades’ lead to one with 4:29 left in the second period when he scored nine seconds into a two-man advantage to make it a 2-1 game.

Ethan Hunter had the only goal of the first period for the Blades. Trent North nearly tied it up early in the second when his shot went off the post and out and the referee ruled that it had not crossed the goal line.

Brass made 30 saves in the game, which saw the King Miners outshot 34-22.

The Blades were the only team to beat the King Miners all year, and they did it twice, also defeating them 4-1 in the round robin March 10, though two of those goals were scored into an empty net.

Logan Evans had the only goal for the King Miners in that game, scoring early in the third period, but Joel Loudon and Adam Kobelka scored in the last half of the third period to give Beausejour a 2-1 lead before Arius Feilberg and Hunter scored empty-netters.

Thompson’s final round robin game March 11 was a 3-1 win over the Swan Valley Stampeders, who beat The Pas Huskies 5-1 to win the bronze medal March 12. Jonathan Saun-

ders had two goals for Thompson, including the game-winner early in the third period, and Sheldin Howard the other, scored on a power play with two minutes left in the game.

Saunders’s first goal came in the second period and tied the game 1-1 after Ethan Campbell opened scoring for Swan Valley in the first period.

Earlier on March 11, Howard had a pair of goals in the third period, including the game-winner, as the King Miners beat The Pas 6-4. Armando Evans had also scored for Thompson in the third period, making it 4-2 at the time, before Logan MacDonald reduced the difference to one goal.

Noah Butler had the final goal of the game for The Pas after Howard’s two goals had made it 6-3 for the King Miners.

Jonathan Saunders and Reuther had goals for Thompson in the second period of that game. Justin Spence had the first goal of the game in the first period but Butler and Sean Hrabowich responded for the Huskies to give them a 2-1 lead at the first intermission.

Thompson opened the tournament with a 7-0 win over the Cross Lake Islanders, getting two goals each from North and Chase Gurniak and singles from Reuther, Keistin Saunders and Jonathan Saunders.

The King Miners had won all 30 games they played in the 2016-17 season before their loss to the Blades March 10, including 24 Norman midget AA league regular season games and five straight playoff games and then their first round robin game of provincials.

For the third time in as many years, R.D. Parker Collegiate has a girls’ provincial basketball champion, but this time it is the junior varsity squad that finished on top in Manitoba.

The Trojans defeated the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Wesmen 62-53 in the final game to claim the school’s first junior varsity girls’ AAA championship since 2009. That followed

a 47-40 win over the John Taylor Collegiate Pipers in the semifinals and a 53-27 rout of the Calvin Christian Collegiate Eagles in their opening round-robin game.

RDPC’s Ashley Williams was named the tournament’s most valuable player and her teammate Emma Deibert was also named as a tournament all-star.

Avery Ritchie was the Trojans’ player of the game in the final, while Williams was named RDPC’s player

of the game in their other two games.

The championship is the fourth for a girls’ basketball team from RDPC in the past nine years. The varsity girls were back-to-back champions in 2015 and 2016 after losing in the finals the two previous years. The junior varsity girls won the championship in 2009.

RDPC’s varsity boys and girls are competing at provincials in Winnipeg March 16-18.

Response to adversity shows character of Thompsonites To the Editor: The North, and the City of Thompson, just experienced probably one of the worst blizzards for more than 40 years. By the time this letter is read, the storm would have been almost a week behind us and all of the streets and most everyone’s driveway would be cleared out. I was one of the individuals who was driving around on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon (I hunkered down like most everyone else on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning) and was amazed at the speed of our city staff and contractors in clearing out the primary roads of the city, even if it was only one lane at times, to allow for traffic. I recognize that not all streets were cleared and there were individuals who got stuck but the city and its staff and contractors should be congratulated on what I felt was a job well done. I would also like to recognize my fellow Thompsonites who, on many occasions, stopped to help motorists that got stuck. It really shows what we Thompsonites are made of in times of difficulty.

Promises being broken To the Editor: As new information about health care cuts starts to leak out, we are now starting to get a clearer picture of Premier Brian Pallister’s priorities.

We all know that he promised Manitoba families during last year’s election that he would protect public services and the people who provide them. Unfortunately, there is a growing gap between what our premier promised and what he’s actually doing now.

Just last week, we learned that the premier has ordered that more than $125 million be cut out of the budgets for health care in every region of our province $6 million from the Northern region. It is nearly impossible to believe that a $6 million cut from the regional budget won’t hurt patient care.

This news leaves Manitobans asking some very serious questions. First and foremost, what’s on the chopping block when it comes to their health care? We’ve already seen the Pallister government close a Quick Care clinic in Winnipeg and cancel important health capital projects like a desperately needed new personal care home in the Interlake. Should we expect more cuts to front-line health care services?

I was always taught that when you make a promise you keep it. I hope the premier does the right thing and follows through on his promise to protect and invest in public services and the people who provide them.

Reclaiming traditional NDP territory astute

t probably didn’t surprise anyone who watches politics even somewhat closely when ChurchillKeewatinook Aski MP Niki Ashton announced March 7 that she was seeking the leadership of the federal NDP for a second time after having finished well back of current leader Thomas Mulcair when the party last elected a new leader in 2012 following the death of Jack Layton.

That first attempt, most likely, wasn’t launched in hopes of actually winning as much as it was in the service of getting her name into the national conversation and setting herself up for a second run down the line.

As evidenced by the speech she gave in Ottawa at the launch of her campaign, Ashton as NDP leader would re-

position the party back where it has traditionally been, as a defender of workers, the environment, indigenous people and those who feel that Canada’s two other major political parties, the Liberals and Conservatives, don’t represent their interests.

For her leadership campaign and the party as a whole, this is probably a wise move. Attempts to move the party more towards the centre in an effort to woo voters who traditionally opt for the Liberals or, less likely, the Conservatives, have not resulted in electoral gains for the NDP which has traditionally been Canada’s third party and its political conscience.

By speaking out for the LGBTQ community and identifying herself as a feminist and someone who would

oppose oil pipelines passing over aboriginal peoples’ territories without their consent, Ashton is identifying a clear brand for the NDP as a party of the left.

This not only helps fend off challenges from further left by the likes of the Green party, it also differentiates the party from the Liberals, who attract a sizable number of left-leaning voters, particularly when they have a charismatic leader, and are notable as the Canadian political party that doesn’t really have an ideology except doing what it needs to to win elections, which they have been very successful at over Canada’s first 149 years.

The sort of policies that Ashton espouses, like free post-secondary education, may not be those that will endear her to every voter,

or even to enough to ever win enough votes to become the government or even the Official Opposition again.

But they could energize those who have drifted away from the NDP as they feel the party has drifted away from its principles.

One party without any guiding principles is probably enough for a country like Canada. If Ashton succeeds in her second bid to lead the NDP as a socialist alternative to the Liberals and Conservatives, who are often so alike as to practically be two sides of the same coin, it will probably be due to her recognition that, in today’s political climate, moderation and incremental changes are not enough inspire those groups of voters who feel as if a trip to the ballot box has become pretty much pointless.

Summary of Position:

The Family Enhancement Worker undertakes thorough assessments and comprehensive planning with families, and follows a solution focused, strength based approach to making change. Air transportation shut down Tuesday and Wednesday, says Thompson Airport Authority CEO Curtis Ross, not only due to hazardous flying conditions with strong crosswinds and poor visibility, but also because equipment operators responsible for tasks like clearing snow from runways and parking lots couldn’t operate safely because they couldn’t see each other through the blowing snow. The airport reopened at 7 a.m. March 9 and operations were back on schedule and back to normal by later that day. Blizzards and freezing rain are the only two things that usually shut the airport down, said Ross, who can’t recall similar weather in his 26 years in Thompson. By suspending operations, the airport also helped ensure that peopel wouldn’t be attempting to drive out to make their

flights, getting stuck and create more situations for emergency responders to attend to. Since the winter storm affected most of the province, including other northern airports in Gillam and Churchill and other places that many of the flights from Thompson head to or come from, there wasn’t much point in remaining open during the severe weather.

Manitoba Hydro public affairs director Scott Powell said it is common practice for the Crown corporation to help out in potential emergency situations by lending equipment to emergency services, as it did in this case. He also said that the conditions in Northern Manitoba meant that the region didn’t experience the power outages that affected the western part of the province.

“I think it was cold enough that we didn’t get the icing there,” he said, noting that ice on the lines and poles is a frequent cause of power outages during winter storms.
