Ron MacLean, co-host of Coach’s Corner and host of Hometown Hockey, has visited many places around the world, but never Thompson, until now. MacLean stopped in Thompson on March 8 to broadcast live from outside the Thompson Regional Community Centre during the pre-game show between the Calgary Flames and the Ottawa Senators. MacLean spoke to the Thompson Citizen before his arrival, saying he was excited to see what Thompson has to offer. “I don’t know Paint Lake and I don’t know a lot about Thompson, but I’ve heard great things about the Burntwood River. The lifestyle would be very much up my alley. You can really truly enjoy winter.” The Canadian icon started in the media industry when

he was in high school, working at his local radio station. “I just kind of saw the vibe in the station. There was an AM operation, FM radio and a television. I was so enthused by what I saw. I loved the idea of an AM disc jockey putting on a record, saying to the listener it’s going to be 30 degrees and sunshine, and here’s a great song.” The work started off as an operator then MacLean was offered a shift as a weekend DJ in charge of the evening show. “It just snowballed from there.” Hometown Hockey will visit 25 different communities during this year’s NHL season, with three stops in Manitoba. Although MacLean is excited to see the north, he thought they would have chosen Flin Flon over Thompson. “We had Selkirk early on, and Brandon, and I assume to represent the north we have

chosen one. To me, it’s surprising they would choose Thompson over Flin Flon, because of the Bobby Clark legend. For whatever reason they obviously recognized a great program in the midget AAA Northstars, and the work Doug Korman has done there.” When MacLean was 11 years old, his father bought him a Hockey Night in Canada double LP that featured the history of the show, which would end up being what he is best known for today. “I would absolutely design every Saturday around the show, and it was very important that I sat down and watched the commentators open the telecast.” MacLean says if he could go back and speak with that 11-year-old self about what his life would be one day, he would say “your life is about to get crazy,” but the sportscaster says it

seemed only natural to work for CBC. “I lived and built my life around the show and prepared in a way it almost seemed natural to flow there.” During this travelling tour MacLean says he’s experienced a lot of exciting things so far like 140 kilometre an hour winds in Newfoundland, eating a seal meat burger in St. John’s, and being in Nova Scotia during one of their many winter storms. The moment that has stuck in MacLean’s head when it comes to hockey this season is Carey Price. “He’s a guy that I really cheer for, just such a phenomenal story. His father was a goaltender drafted by the NHL Philadelphia Flyers, his mom was a chief of Ulkatcho First Nation in British Columbia. They’ve taught him so many things about leadership that is beautiful to watch. His manners, his support of the

opponents, I just love Carey Price.” MacLean hopes Hometown Hockey will continue on next year. His hope during his four-year contract is to see 100 different hockey communities in the country. This way it shows children watching what is out there besides their hometowns. “When I was a boy I liked those kind of shows where you can chart the course, and live along with the 25 tour stops, learn a little bit about each community. I know how excited I am to get to Thompson and to get Prince George, British Columbia, another city I’ve never visited. I just love the learning component of it and I think that’s what makes it.” Although Saturday night is already taken, a new family tradition will start, MacLean says, on Sunday watching Rogers Hometown Hockey.
