The TRCC fields played host to the tenth and final Thomas Duncan Memorial Paintball Tournament, pitting six three-person teams against each other in a roundrobin speedball format, amid a haze of 30-degree heat throughout the afternoon. The tournament is organized annually by Jeremis Ouelette, who also owns and runs Lock n’ Load paintball field outside of town; among attendants were sixteen members of the Duncan family, who every year provide plaques for the tournament and travel from across both the province and the country in memory of Duncan. Emerging victorious was Wiper No Wiping, made up of Trent Beardy as well as Colton and Trent Elias; Player James Hendren was awarded the individual prize of Best Overall Performance. Along with the regular tournament was also the Gentleman’s

Duel. Normally an actual, singleshot dual, this year the team went with something different: A paintball market hooked up to a remote trigger, hidden among four inactive buttons. Participants took turns avoiding the live switch (which changed with every turn), until Brenden Moose emerged victorious with a plaque and a new paintball marker. The tournament has been organized annually in memory of Thomas Duncan, an avid paintball player who was instrumental in helping Ouelette open the Lock N’ Load paintball field fifteen years ago.“ He didn’t have the money at the time, and he would never ask us for it,” said his father, Stuart Duncan, “So he would help Jeremis set up and get some free balls, and it went from there.” Duncan’s duties ran from morning set-up and labour, to paperwork, to advocating for the field before City Council. Sometimes, he would sleep in his car for an early start on the

fields. “Thomas did the work of four people,” his mother, Debbie Duncan, explained. “When you have someone like that, who’s willing to help unconditionally, that’s why Jeremis has so much respect for Duncan today.” From teamwork to economy, Duncan’s roots made him into the player he was. Debbie Duncan, recalled that her son was always an advocate for the underdog, recalling one seemingly doomed match, where his team, including a young girl, were hopelessly pinned down: “Thomas convinced his other teammates to give themselves up, while the girl stayed hidden away. When the other team started cheering, because they thought they had one, girl popped out and got them all. No one forgot about the girls after that.” His frugality with paint made him into a notorious marksman, and his keen sense of the field earned him both a place on the league team, and the nickname

“Rabbit”: Always moving, never to be found. Displayed alongside the tournament plaques, Duncan’s mask was still adorned with his signature rabbit ears, which he would wear during play. This was the tenth and last Thomas Duncan Memorial Tournament, fittingly hosted on TRCC grounds: the team had been unsuccessfully attempting to book the field since the tournaments inception, bringing one last success to the tournament before it’s retirement. But as Ouelette notes, with a new generation of players should come a new tournament. “I’ve lost all of the senior guys who knew him. So it just feels like me hanging onto the memory now. It can be a hard feeling every time.” Both Debbie and Stuart are grateful for the overwhelming support that the family has received over the years, “I’m thrilled that these guys still honour and respect him the way that they do,” said Debbie.
