It took a couple of close games and even a bit of overtime magic, but R.D. Parker Collegiate's senior girls' basketball team beat all challengers at the AAA high school provincials in Winnipeg March 15-17 to claim the title as the top team in Manitoba for the third time in the past four years.

The Trojans beat the University of Winnipeg Collegiate Wesmen 58-50 in overtime on St. Patrick's Day to claim the provincial championship. The teams were close through most of the game, tied at the end of the first and second quarters and RDPC behind by two to start the fourth, though they were down by as many as nine points in the third quarter.

The Trojans tied the score 44-44 with about four minutes left and then built up a five-point lead, but the Wesmen battled back to tie the game and send it to overtime. ‘I hope my mom comes home;’ MKO organizes awareness walk for missing loved ones

In the wake of several high-profile missing per-

or how it feels,” said Jeanette. “All we need is some support from our community, our surrounding communities, so with that I’d like to say: thank you.”

Luckily, this story does have a happy ending, since Hyslop was found alive a day later.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the next speaker Clara Bignell, who’s been relentlessly searching for her 60-yearold mother Dianne since she disappeared May 17.

In a previous conversation with the Thompson Citizen, Clara described her mother as 5’4” tall with a heavy build and shoulder-length grey hair, who couldn’t have gone far due to her bad knees and sore hip.

Although Clara struggled to get the words out during Thursday’s event, she managed to thank all the people who have been helping search for her mother on the Burntwood River for the last several weeks.

“Keep us in your prayers,” she said while wiping back tears. “I hope my mom comes home.”

However, representatives from the MKO were quick to point out that people can do a whole lot more than simply offer up their thoughts and prayers.

According to Hilda Anderson-Pyrz, a missing and murdered women liaison for the MKO, increased funding and resources for the Thompson RCMP would allow for more comprehensive searches in the surrounding area.

For private citizens, Anderson-Pyrz said the best way to pitch in is by helping these families directly, either by volunteering your time at a search site or by providing these groups with food, equipment or even temporary lodgings.

“You could also help by allowing some of the searchers who are coming in from the surrounding communities … opening your homes to them, giving them a place to stay, allowing them to shower there and stuff like that,” she said.

Anderson-Pyrz went on to say that most of these volunteer actions can be facilitated through the MKO’s local office at 55 Selkirk Avenue, since they can help anybody connect with these affected families directly.

Thompson entrepreneurs set to launch local bus service on Sept. 1

Local entrepreneurs are looking to fill the void Greyhound Canada will leave after closing down all bus operations in Western Canada by the end of October 2018.

During a July 19 press conference at Thompson City Hall, Jimmy Pelk and Siddharth Varma said they aim to solve this problem in the Hub of the North by establishing their own locally owned and operated bus company called simply Thompson Bus. Although the finer details of things like scheduling and pricing won’t be finalized until August, the pair said their services will be rolled out in a limited capacity as of Sept. 1 and will be fully operational Nov. 1.

“Our company has very aggressive goals serving northerners to our best potential with a long-term plan,” said Varma, who works as a sales and leasing consultant at Twin Motors.

According to Pelk, who is the general manager of Twin Motors, their first priority with Thompson Bus is to fulfill the passenger transportation and freight shipping needs of

While this includes operation of transit routes around Thompson, Pelk said they also have their

eye on establishing multiple drop-off points in Winnipeg.

“Our goal is to be able to deliver people right to the medical services in Winnipeg,” he said. “Our goal is to deliver people to surrounding hotels, to the

international airport and also Polo Park.”

Pelk also didn’t count out the possibility of expanding their services to other northern communities like The Pas and Flin Flon or rehiring current Greyhound employees who will be los-

ing their jobs in the fall.

“When you look at the current staff that are in place, there’s some very long-term employees with some great knowledge and experience in the transportation industry,” he said.

“So for us to say ‘no’ to that would be crazy.”

Even though Kasper Transportation already announced on July 9 that they plan to establish a bus route between Thompson and Winnipeg, Pelk claims that Thompson Bus holds a considerable advantage over the Thunder Baybased company, since local residents like himself and Varma have a much better understanding of the community’s unique needs.

“With a company that comes out of Thunder Bay, we feel, as entrepreneurs, that they’re not going to be able to provide the same level of quality of service that we can as northerners,” he said.

Despite this disadvantage, Kasper Transportation CEO Kasper Wabinsky told the Thompson Citizen on July 20 that he still plans to move ahead with establishing his own northern services, which are supposed to be up and running in

Thompson by Oct. 31.

“I’ll do my thing, they can do their thing. We’ll see how it goes,” he said.

“I don’t think, frankly, that people care whether it’s local or not. All they care about is that the service is provided properly for the right price.”

However, Pelk and Varma also flaunt the advantage of having pre-existing relationships with members of the local business community and municipal government, many of whom attended Thursday’s press conference at city hall.

“Over the next ten days we’re really going to work with community partners, with the city, with Thompson 2020, with economic development [officers], to understand the true need that the bus is required for,” said Pelk.

“Because we’re not doing this to have a bus service for two months or two years. We’re doing this to have a bus service and transportation service for generations to come.”

The power generated by the Keeyask dam will not even be providing Manitobans with clean renewable energy but rather will be routed all the way from Keeyask to Winnipeg and from Winnipeg, it will be sold down the line to the U.S. The way Hydro has handled these two projects have shown me two things.

They do not care about the people they service and they do not care about the people their projects affect. It saddens me to see such a great city like Thompson and its surrounding beauty chewed up and spit out by big industry. Over the last 20 years I have come to love the City of Thompson and have truly enjoyed watching it grow into the city it is today. While I understand the need for progress, when does the price become

However, an average American hunter travelling to Canada spends approximately $6,000 to $10,000 start to finish. Hunter dollars are very important to not only Thompson but Canada itself as these are new dollars being pumped into the economy to fund everything from conservation to schools. That means for every

I will cherish you all forever. Thompson will always hold a special place in my heart and it will truly be an impossible task to replace the loss of beauty caused by the wheels of progress.

Manitoba Hydro’s Spirit Way wolf gets a fresh paint job, new home

Last September, Jan Hall made a big impression in the community by providing the Thompson RCMP with their very own painted wolf statue.

On July 20 the Thompson artist unveiled her latest work, which was undertaken on behalf of Manitoba Hydro.

Similar to her last piece for the RCMP, Hall decided to dress up this concrete canine in occupation-specific clothing, mimicking a hydro worker’s high-visibility gear and adding a hard hat for good measure.

Hall even paid tribute to Manitoba Hydro’s infrastructure in the north by painting a generating station and electrical substation around the base of the statue.

Manitoba Hydro received their custom wolf statue years ago as part of Spirit Way Inc.’s ongoing initiative to boost Thompson’s appeal as a tourism destination.

ditions, which caused the artwork to degrade significantly over time.

As a result, Ed Danyluk of Manitoba Hydro recently commissioned Hall to give this wolf a much-needed touch-up.

Once Hall finished the job, Danyluk decided to move the statue from its original location near the northern aviation tribute site at Lions Club Park to Hydro’s main Thompson

office on Station Road to give this artwork the full attention it deserves.

“We’ve had people stopping by all day long and taking pictures,” Danyluk said during the statue’s official unveiling on July 20. “I think it’s good to have the wolves spread out through town and it looks good.”

In Beckmann’s estimation, there are over

50 Spirit Way wolf statues currently on display throughout Manitoba and beyond. While around 36 statues are in Thompson, wolves can also be found in Winnipeg, Churchill, Lorette and even New York state.

According to the Spirit Way’s website, each wolf statue is made of solid concrete, weighs 5,500 pounds and stands 7.5 feet tall.

St. Theresa Point teen dies after being struck by drunk driver A 35-year-old woman was arrested for impaired driving causing death after a 13-year-old was hit by a vehicle and killed in St. Theresa Point July 19.

Island Lake RCMP responded to a vehicle-pedestrian collision and deter-

mined that an intoxicated female driver had hit the teenage female while heading southbound on St. Theresa Point’s main road near the nursing station.

The teen was transported to hospital in Winnipeg with serious injuries but

died July 20.

A 32-year-old male passenger in the van was uninjured.

Paula Wood was charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death and remanded into custody.

Boys & Girls Club gets back to summer programming after lengthy shutdown

The Boys & Girls Club of Thompson has been going through a lot of changes recently, including a staffing crisis that closed the non-profit organization down from May to late June.

“So when that happened, we didn’t have the capacity to really run our programs effectively, so we took that time to regroup and hire some people.,”

says executive director Regina DaSilva-Gibbons.

E v e n t u a l l y , DaSilva-Gibbons did manage to replace all the members of her management team, which allowed the Boys & Girls Club to re-open its doors on June 25.

This came just in time, since the school season was just wrapping up and local kids would have been left without a lot of options for summer time

activities, especially since the city recently decided to cut the day camp program out of their 2017−18 budget.

In order to fill that void, DaSilva-Gibbons said the Boys & Girls Club is running its “Summer Brain Gain” program from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., which involves a variety of classroom activities meant to keep children’s minds active and engaged well into the dog days of summer.

“That program is based on a pilot project that the Boys & Girls Club of Canada ran last year,” said DaSilva-Gibbons.

“So it’s meant to bridge learning between the end of the school year and the beginning of the next one.”

Otherwise, the Boys & Girls Club is holding its regular summer camp hours from 2 p.m. to 7p.m., with an increased emphasis on outdoor ac-

tivities and active play.

“Although we have video games we’ve not turned those on since we reopened,” said DaSilva-Gibbons. “And that’s sort of the direction I want to go in. I don’t want to use screens of any kind, really, to take up the kids’ time.”

The executive director’s next big project is to hire somebody to run the club’s evening programs in the hopes of attracting

an older youth audience.

“You have to be pretty mature and you have to have had some experience with youth, otherwise it just doesn’t go very well,” she said. “That’s our next big push is youth engagement and how to get them on board.”

Gillam Airport getting federal funding for new snowblower The Gillam Airport is receiving $418,000 from Transport Canada’s Airports Capital Assistance Program (ACAP) to replace a medium snowblower, the federal government announced July

23.

The Bloodvein River Airport is also receiving $201,00 to purchase a small snowblower, Transport Canada said.

“The Bloodvein River and Gillam airports

are important hubs for residents and businesses in this region,” said Winnipeg South Centre MP and Minister of International Trade Diversification Jim Carr in a press release. “This

snow-clearing equipment will help ensure continued safe operations for passengers, flight crews, and employees, who rely on these airports to support the regional economy and its social development.”

“The government of Canada recognizes the important role played

by Canada’s local airports in supporting jobs and tourism, enabling investment and facilitating trade,” said Minister of

Transport Marc Garneau.

“Our investments are helping airports increase safety and accessibility for residents and travellers, while supporting the continued growth of local and regional economies.”
