Thompson RCMP are asking for the public’s help identifying a man who bought a small bottle filled with gasoline and then set fire to the Butter Chicken Express Indian restaurant in the Thompson Plaza parking lot July 18.

“The investigation has determined that a male suspect filled a small bottle with gasoline at a nearby gas station, paid for it, and then walked over to the business and started the fire,” said RCMP in a July 19 press release. “He is believed to have suffered burns to his hands.”

Security cameras at the gas station captured images of the suspect.

Anyone who recognizes the suspect, or has information about this arson, can call Thompson RCMP at 204-677-6909 or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477. Tips can also be submitted online at www.maniobacrimestoppers.com.

RCMP officers leaving the local detachment noticed smoke around 3:35 a.m. Thursday morning.

“Officers attended the scene and a business on Selkirk Ave was fully engulfed in flames,” said Manitoba RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Julie Courchaine, at which point Thompson Fire & Emergency Services was contacted and arrived to extinguish the blaze.

“Despite encountering

heavy fire conditions on arrival, crews were able to contain the fire and save the structure,” said the Thompson Professional Firefighters Association on their Facebook page. “During the course of the incident one firefighter received light injuries and is being assessed at TGH [Thompson General Hospital].

The firefighter will make a full recovery. The RCMP continues to secure the incident. Our brother organization of the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) will be assisting with investigative services.”

One of the first two fixed-location Indian restaurants in Thompson, along with Holy Spice, which recently moved from the Burntwood Hotel to the old Wong’s Asian Bistro location in the same building as the Shell gas station on Thompson Drive South, Butter Chicken Express opened in February 2016. It was established

by Kal Singh and his wife Belbebr Singh, who are both from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

And, at the same time, they want to make life less affordable for northerners by imposing a devastatingly high carbon tax on Northerners.”

Kinew points out that the Manitoba government has rebuffed attempts by the City of Thompson to access funding from the Mining Community Reserve Fund by saying the amount of money in the fund does not meet the $10 million threshold required, the PCs say, for it to be used. The NDP obtained documents showing there is currently more than $11 million in the fund.

Warren Luky, president of United Steelworkers Local 6166, the union that represents hourly workers at Vale in Thompson, said Bindle was silent on the issue of mining until a recent private members bill expressing support for the industry that was never voted upon and that he wasn’t present during Vale’s transition to a mining and milling only oper-

ation, which reduced the Thompson workforce to about 600 hourly workers plus Vale staff.

“If he supported mining it was not through speaking up for mine reserve funds for our community,” Luky said.

The province recently issued a request for proposals (RFP) to develop a mineral readiness strategy for Northern Manitoba “that will include opportunities for strategic alignment of geological services to identify the long-term potential, strengthen administration and improve the benefits to Manitoba by positioning the mineral sector as a major contributing pillar of the economy.” Evaluation of the proposals received is set to be complete by July 19 and the contract awarded by Aug. 2, with the successful company expected to begin providing services Aug. 9.

“This RFP is too little, too late for the people of Thompson, Flin Flon and The Pas who have watched good jobs disappear from their communities,” said Flin Flon NDP MLA Tom Lindsey.

“Families need more than a plan to have a plan. They need support now.”

Health care concerns at the top of many voters’ minds, says NDP leader

Health care and jobs are the two main focus areas of the NDP as they prepare for the provincial election Sept. 10 and party leader Wab Kinew says they’re concerns for a lot of people in Thompson, too.

“We’ve gotten an earful on those issues just in the few hours we’ve been here,” Kinew said in an interview with the Thompson Citizen July 18. The NDP leader was in Thompson for a pubic forum on provincial issues at the Royal Canadian Legion as well as meetings with the constituency association, the deputy mayor and city administration and representatives from United Steelworkers Local 6166, which represents hourly workers at Vale’s Manitoba Operations.

“People are complaining about the expansion to the [northern consultation] clinic that was cancelled, the OR rooms being closed and then just all the ripple effects that’s having in terms of making people have to wait longer when they do have to go to hospital or to have appointments,” said Kinew.

He also heard concerns about the Lifeflight air ambulance program switching from government jets to privately operated aircraft and the Northern Patient Transportation Program.

“What I’m hearing from

the patients, and I take them at their word over this government when it comes to health care, is escorts are not getting approved,” he said in regards to the patient transportation program. “Even the patients themselves are getting denied transportation. It’s getting harder and harder. What the government’s saying doesn’t match up with what we’re hearing from patients, who are saying it’s more difficult to arrange transportation and even when they do get approved they’re getting approved for less or without escorts. All in all, it just seems like health care’s getting worse.”

Kinew also says the NDP is the only party standing up for Manitoba’s north as the mining industry has gone through a rough patch over the past few years.

“I’m the one who’s standing up for northern jobs,” he said. “We’re the party that’s putting forward a plan for mining jobs for the mining industry for the mining industry and for northern jobs.

We’re the ones who have been raising these issues in the legislature for the past number of years and, to be frank, Thompson does not have representation at the legislature right now. The premier’s certainly not talking about how to create good jobs in the mining sector or across the north. We’re the

team that’s doing that.”

But supporting the mining industry does mean sacrifices have to be made elsewhere.

“We’re saying yes to mining and no to oil and gas subsidies,” Kinew said.

“We know if we want to have an environmentally friendly future, we’ve got to have the minerals for the batteries, for the technology, for the buildings and the infrastructure. We

know we can mine those more cleanly and with better labour standards in Manitoba than pretty much anywhere else in the world so we should do that here but at the same time we’ve got to make choices so what we’re saying is maybe we stop giving handouts to the oil and gas companies so we can focus on mining in Manitoba.”

The NDP leader says his

party’s approach is one that looks to the future while the Progressive Conservatives don’t have a plan besides taking the provincial sales tax off certain goods and services.

“The Tories can’t run on health care, they can’t run on creating jobs,” Kinew said. “So what are they going to run on? They’re going to run on attacking me and my team. I think

Manitobans will see the difference between our two messages. One’s about the future, one’s about a negative message.

I’ll criticize [Progressive Conservative leader Brian] Pallister but not on a personal level. I’ll just talk about the choices he’s made that I don’t agree with in terms of cutting health care, not standing up for jobs.”

Parallel mines, parallel lies To the Editor: In 1982, Sherritt announced the cessation of mining at Lynn Lake, Manitoba. After high grading three mines – Farley, EL Mine and A Mine – to death, when nickel was healthy, it was decided to not develop an open pit copper/zinc/gold mine because of low prices on the London Metals Exchange.

Like we saw in Thompson recently, up to the plate stepped some well-meaning union men and our MLA to secure cash to develop a small gold operation to sustain the community.

Similar to our current situation, the town breathed a sigh of relief.

After securing the “bailout” for the operation, Sherritt, like Vale, took the money, investing it in a more lucrative open pit nickel mine in Cuba (Sherritt Energy Incorporated).

In 1988, as Local 5757’s recording secretary, I received a request from SHERGOLD to allow all mining to be “contracted out,” while allocating the surface jobs to our bargaining unit.

The membership was outraged and voted an astounding “No” to the request. Less than a year passed and American Barrack asked for major concessions from our local. We reopened our three-year contract and signed a new two-year deal. Shortly after the ink dried, the company announced the shutdown, just prior to Christmas 1989.

And in 2019 our local men and women head to bargain with this corporate entity. My prediction is that “contracting out” of the local ore bodies is not given the “green light,” the lock will go on the gates, with the taxpayer left out again, after investing hundreds of millions in another Conservative blunder.

Environment Canada Hot temperatures are forecast for Thompson and much of Northern Manitoba beginning Sunday and continuing for a few days.

With temperatures expected to top 30 degrees Celsius for three days running in Thompson this week, Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living is warning people in the province’s central and north to be aware of possible health effects.

“Environment and Climate Change Canada is forecasting high temperatures in Manitoba on Sunday, and climbing Monday and Tuesday,” says the province. “This system will bring hot conditions to central and Northern Manitoba (including Flin Flon, The Pas, Norway House, Lynn Lake, Thompson and may also include Grand Rap-

ids), with some areas experiencing this extreme heat for two to three days.”

The health department says older adults, people with chronic conditions and people living alone are at higher risk of suffering a heat-related illness, especially in urban areas or if they do not have air conditioning. Infants and young children and those who work or exercise in the heat are also at risk.

People are advised to visit friends, older family members and neighbours to ensure they are staying cool and drinking water and not to leave people or pets alone in parked vehicles or direct

sunlight.

The province also advises that drugs such as amphetamines, MDMA (ecstasy), cocaine, alcohol and cannabis, along with some medications, can increase the risk of overheating.

Heat-related illnesses can be avoided by drinking plenty of water, wearing loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing, avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the says, limiting alcohol consumption and taking cold showers or baths.

Heat illness and heat stroke symptoms include headaches, dizziness, confusion, nausea, a rapid weak

pulse, complete or total loss of consciousness and red, hot, dry skin. The longer a person’s body temperature is above 40 Celsius (105 degrees Fahrenheit), the likelihood of permanent injury or death increases.

If you suspect someone is suffering from heat illness or heat stroke, you should move them to a cool place and have them drink water. If someone has a high body temperature, is unconscious or confused, call for emergency medical services and apply cold water to large areas of the skin and fan them as much as possible while waiting for help to arrive.

About 150 surgeries have been affected by the closure of three of four operating rooms at the Thompson General Hospital as a result of water damage from a faulty rooftop air conditioning unit.

Nearly seven weeks have passed since the damage was discovered June 1 and the Northern Regional Health Authority (NRHA) says it could be six months before cleanup and restoration are complete.

“To date, more than 123 surgeries have ben cancelled,” said a July 19 email from the NRHA in response to questions posed by the Thompson Citizen July 11. “There have been 27 surgeries performed at other facilities.”

Emergency surgeries and emergency C-sections continue to be performed in Thompson.

The restoration project has not been tendered yet because the work is under the supervision of insurance brokers who provided the hospital’s building insurance. As a result, no cost estimate for the restoration is currently available.

Manitoba NDP leader Wab Kinew told attendees at a public forum in Thompson July 18 that he had heard the insurance

company only wanted to pay to restore the operating rooms to the state they were in before being damaged and not to the current operating room standard.

The NRHA said an accurate timeline for the work to be complete is not yet available.

“The full scope of work has not been fully established, but early estimates are four to six months to completion.”

New roofs for the hospital and the adjacent administration building are among 117 health-care safety and security projects the province is spending $28 million on this year, Health Minister Cameron Friesen announced May 28. The hospital was also scheduled to get new operating room doors as well as new courtyard concrete and upgrades to pharmacy security, the nurse call system and lighting.

The hospital roof replacement, vacuum pump upgrades and/or replacement and phase two of a water booster upgrade were previously announced by the provincial government in February 2018, but the work on the roof did not begin despite the province underspending its health budget by $100 million in the 2018-19 budget year, Kinew said in mid-June.

Cyclists raise $5K for animal rescue

Thompson Citizen photos by Ian Graham The July 20 Pedals for Paws fundraiser generated $5,135 for Northern Manitoba Paws in Need, a Thompson-based animal rescue that was sheltering 19 dogs and 17 cats as of the end of June, says Thompson Veterinary Clinic owner Jennifer Nyhof, one of the event’s organizers. Participants biked out to Mid Lake, and in some cases back, after starting out from the North Centre Mall parking lot at the corner of Mystery Lake Road and Station Road at 10 a.m. Nyhof said 17 riders completed the one-way trip (30 kilometres) while five participants managed to complete the return trip (60 kilometres).

Outside of thanking the volunteers, donors and sponsors for making this inaugural fundraiser happen, Nyhof also said they are going to turn Pedal for Paws into an annual event.

The Cross Lake Islanders refused to lose in game four of their midget AA league playoff final series on the road against the Thompson King Miners March 16, twice coming back to tie the game before taking the series three games to one on an overtime goal about seven minutes into overtime.

Armando Evans, Drayden Garrick, Morgan McKay, Dallas Muskego and Kadin Ross had the goals for the Islanders, who opened the scoring in the first before giving up three goals to Matthew Rempel, Kale Mayor and Conroy Halcrow of Thompson in the first four minutes of the second period to trail 3-1. Muskego’s goal made it a one-goal King Miners lead heading into the third period.

The King Miners were less than five minutes from forcing a fifth and deciding game in the series when the Islanders tied the game. A little over a minute later, however, Drayden Jobb put Thompson back on top 4-3.

But Cross Lake refused to accept defeat, and took just 22 seconds to tie the game once again on a goal by McKay, setting the stage for overtime heroics.

Shots in the game were 33-25 in favour of the King Miners, who got 28 saves from Skylar Szocs, while Peter Ross stopped 21 in Cross Lake’s net to give his team the win and the league championship.

The Islanders took the series lead with a 7-6 overtime victory in game three of the series in Cross Lake March 11 after having opened it with a 5-4 victory two days earlier. The King Miners won game two 5-3 on March 10.

The Pimicikamak Cree Nation firefighters earned 490 points in the five-event competition, finishing 100 points head of runners-up Lac Brochet. Sandy Bay First Nation was third with 340 points.

Concert in the Park moves to evenings for 2019 shows

Concert in the Park is making its return to MacLean Park July 24, although there’s been a slight change in format.

Instead of hosting a one-hour musical performance at noon every week throughout the summer, this year’s organizers will be putting on a trio of free three-hour shows in the evening.

Wednesday’s inaugural event will showcase the talents of Brendan Rhodes and The Average Joes rock band from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., while also leaving an hour for open mic performances.

According to Tracey “Smitty” Smith, owner of Music Makers Productions and bass guitarist for the Average Joes, this scheduling change was done for two reasons.

For one, he said an evening show should give Thompsonites more time to enjoy the live music from local artists, since past lunch-time performances really cut into people’s busy work schedules.

Smith also said that this move was done for financial purposes, since the City of Thompson has significantly less money to spend on recreational activities compared to previous years.

“Our company decided that, because the City needed to cut the budget in half, that we would contribute and keep this alive,” said Smith. “Music Makers Productions is sponsoring this, so we’ve donated part of our fees to keep it going.”

Park shows, he said that the duo of Jennifer Nyhof and Kory Wickdahl (Unstrung Heroes) will probably make an appearance.

Coupled with the fact that food trucks will be on hand to provide refreshments, Smith said this year’s new format is the perfect jumping on point for someone who’s never taken part in the Concert in the Park experience before.

“If anybody’s never been to it, now’s the time to go,” he said. “It’s time to support your community and be part of Thompson.”

The Average Joes closed out the 2017 Concert in the Park series back in September of that year. The Thompson-based rock band will be performing during the first show of the 2019 season July 24.

Wride has not provided personal comments on campaign issues. The candidate has backed the existing PC platform for the next election - in essence, continuing on a plan of strict financial control, paying down the provincial deficit while increasing infrastructure investments. Wride said voters have voiced concerns with health care.

“I’ve been out door knocking, just to be out there in the community,” she said. “It’s been going out into the communities, just to say ‘Hi’ to folks and give them an opportunity if they have any concerns they want to share with me.

There’s people who haven’t voted before who have told me they’re going to make an effort to vote in this round.”

Wride added that she will continue to seek out comment and information from different northern communities during the campaign and take responses from voters into account.

“It’s quite interesting, because there’s different perspectives and hopefully, rather than just highlighting the issues, we’ll be able to have solutions and to offer solutions as well,” she said. “When you’re trying to make a plan, you bring all your ideas and there’s brainstorming and you see what works, what’s viable.”

Ambulance fees and emergency room wait times have decreased in Manitoba under the existing PC government, but emergency rooms at three Winnipeg hospitals - Victoria General Hospital, Concordia Hospital and Seven Oaks Hospital - either have been or will be converted to urgent care centres. In Flin Flon, the suspension of birth services at Flin Flon General Hospital last November spurred outrage and a petition to the province to restore the service.

Since taking office, the PC government has also privatized several aspects of Manitoba’s general air services, including aerial firefighting and medical transport. “This government is trending more in the process of privatizing things, like LifeFlight,” said Lindsey. “It will become that much more difficult for people in the north to have that kind of equitable access to health care.”

An ongoing review of K-12 education by the provincial government has also become a topic of discussion on the campaign trail. According to the Manitoba School Boards Association, the main goal of the review is to make recommendations to renew teaching, learning, curriculum and improving the existing system of education.

Critics of the review have

said it is a front for amalgamating school divisions across Manitoba, pointing at the results of similar reviews in other provinces.

Members of the Flin Flon School Division have met with officials with the Ministry of Education on multiple occasions over the past year regarding the review, including a face-to-face session this past spring.

Lindsey believes part of the reason why a provincial election was called before the original 2020 date was to bypass any public ill will following the review’s release.

“This government now has their education review coming up. That’s probably the main reason why Pallister wants to call an election now, so he thinks he’ll have a mandate to do the same to education that’s he’s done to health care - just cutting it, cutting it, privatizing parts, but making it less successful,” said Lindsey. “We haven’t seen this government make any commitments in the north what so ever, as far as funding for pretty much anything. They wouldn’t give any money to Churchill, they wouldn’t get any money to The Pas when they were in trouble. They won’t even release money from the Mining Community Reserve Fund to help communities that are in trouble with mining.”
