Gord passed away on July 14, 2016 at the age of 71 years. He was predeceased by his parents Dugald & Evelyn; brother Doug and sister Jean. Gord is survived by Trudy, his wife of 48 years; 3 sons Peter-John, Stuart and his wife Sandra, and Brent; 5 granddaughters and 3 great-grandchildren. Gord was born in Regina and attended Martin Collegiate. He and Trudy moved to Thompson, MB where he worked for INCO as a mechanical foreman until his retirement in 1996. In 1997 they returned to Saskatchewan. Gord loved the outdoors - hunting and fishing, snowmobiling with his family and farming friends and gardening at the acreage. At Gord’s request, no funeral service will be held. Donations in Gord’s memory may be made to the Regina Humane Society.

A recent post on the community Facebook page Thompson Talk had drawn attention to the relationship between the City of Thompson’s Animal Control Program and the Thompson Humane Society after a resident had made her dispute with city enforcement public.

The post named the Thompson Humane Society as the acting authority in municipal animal control. The post was quickly amended due to comments, and has since been removed.

Thompson Humane Society President Oswald Sawh reminds Thompsonites that the society is an independent organization, with distinct responsibilities and leadership. Sawh notes that the THS was founded with the explicit purpose of filling gaps in animal care which the Animal Control program could not: Specifically, facilities for housing animals. However, this independence restricts their direct influence to those gaps they fill: “The city has their own policy as to how and why animals will be picked up,” said Sawh.

“But once the animals are in the building, that’s when our role starts. Our staff

doesn’t go out in public.”

Sawh notes that where the Humane Society does integrate with city operations, it’s typically to expedite the return of pets, particularly in timesensitive situations such as mothers with nursing pups.

“If a person has paid their fees and has the forms, they can come to our building and we will release the dog or cat. We don’t want to keep animals in the building longer than we have to, so if there’s anything we can do to help put the owners back in contact with their pets, then we do that.”

Sawh notes there are a few situations where the THS may be more hesitant to release an animal too quickly: One reason is medical concerns, dreaded by owners for the high cost of treatment. Sawh notes that the society will insist on treatment in all cases, and will work with owners to ensure the animal receives it.

The other instance is when an animal is lodged by animal control due to abuse. Sawh noted that the THS will never turn over an animal that has clearly been abused. Should a suspect prove to be particularly “insistent”, the animal may be relocated to another shelter. “Everyone is in-

nocent until proven guilty, but we have no choice but to do it if a person shows aggression against either our staff or our building.”

Currently, the Thompson Humane Society’s logo appears on the Animal Control van alongside the City of Thompson, which Sawh admits may be somewhat confusing to unfamiliar residents. However, the THS has no intention of removing their presence from the vehicle. “It’s very important that we show that partnership, because that partnership has saved hundreds of animals over the years; it’s not something we take lightly. The relationship we have with the city has resulted in real results for the benefit of those animals.”

Where animals are retrieved, agents draw authority from two sources: Animal Control Officers are city employees which retrieve animals either roaming free, are aggressive, or are unregistered with the city (Thompson has a zero-tolerance policy for unregistered pets). On the other side is the Animal Protection Officer, whose authority comes from the Province of Manitoba: APOs investigate reported instances of animal abuse or neglect, and have the au-

thority to seize abused animals and lay criminal charges. The situation is made more confusing since, as is often the case in smaller communities, both roles in Thompson are fulfilled by the same individual: Craig Delaronde.

However, a visit from an APO doesn’t always end in court. Delaronde notes that the complaint may end up baseless, and be dismissed. Other times, it’s an innocent mistake: “For minor infractions, we may just make recommendations for specific improvements,” he said.

“Sometimes it’s as simple as a dog not having a lede that’s long enough.” Animals are expected to have leashes three times their body length, from tip to tail.

In a situation deemed serious enough, a pet may be either seized or detained. Detained animals are only temporarily removed while the owner is issued an improvement order: When the owner has fulfi lled the order’s conditions, the animal will be returned.

In extreme situations, such as outright abuse, an animal will be permanently seized and the criminal charges laid against the owner.

The 27 year-old man on trial for the murder of a Thompson teenager more than a decade ago has been acquitted in what the judge has described as a prooundly circumstantial case, citing a lack of consistency, witness collusion, and insubstantial forensic evidence.

Crown prosecutor Brian

Wilford had framed the case against the accused as a net of evidence that increasingly ensnared the victim. However, defense attorney Gerri Wieb noted that the judge found this net to be dubious at best. Witness’s accounts had changed their several times throughout their discussions with police, with key details emerging only years after the initial

incident.

“The evidence kept changing, it wasn’t given to the police, basically, voluntarily. The fact that these people were young at the time was no excuse for this sort of moving target of evidence,” said Wieb.

The judge had also expressed concerns surrounding witness collusion, inevitable due to

English ‘glass houses’

Time spent in other countries often gifts people with valuable learnings to take back home. When I need a bolstering of spirits, I sometimes think about Parisians who celebrate life along the River Seine on warm summer evenings.

They sing, they hug, they drink wine while their feet dangle over the stone river embankments – a “joie de vivre” we all should embrace throughout life. It’s a river scene that deserves to be spread across the world in celebration of just being alive.

In Wales, we were blessed with an opportunity to spend an evening with a Welsh men’s choir practising in a little hall in the historic town of Ystradgynlais in the county of Brecknockshire. It was there we savoured their rich voices as men from all walks of Welsh life proudly sang “Old Land of My Father’s.” Like the spirit of the young Parisians, I also took that newfound love of Welsh music back to Nova Scotia with me as yet another captured treasure from travelling abroad.

One of the features of U.K. life that excites us is architectural in nature.

It is something we see while walking along the streets of villages, towns and cities or rolling by train across the countryside. As I stroll through Solihull, I find myself peeking over stone garden walls and hedges catching a glint of glass amidst the trees. My spirits rise when I spot one making me wish I could ring doorbells and invite myself into their homes.

And while that might seem like a friendly gesture on my part, it just might prompt a call to “the Old Bill” and land me a night in the Solihull

They call them “conservatories” or “orangeries,” sometimes ornately decorated Victorian or Georgian glass structures. They gained popularity about 250 years ago when explorers brought new and amazing tropical plants and fruits to back to England. The climate here though is generally too rugged for these species to prosper. The only place might be Cornwall, an area of sub-tropical summers and mild winters due to the nearby Gulf Stream. In fact, the area even has palm trees, their presence a bit of a shock to those who think of all of England as a cool and damp place that is hardly tropical.

If you are going to successfully grow anything less than hardy in most U.K. areas, the plants must be offered a more welcoming environment. Conservatories provided just that – rooms where fruit trees and other tropical plants could be protected from harsh UK winters. With their glass construction, they created a “microclimate” that gave the plants at least a chance for survival.

Over time, these English glass houses became symbols of prestige, places for people to demonstrate their affluence.

Some were built on a grand scale and featured fountains and grottoes, an ideal setting for grand social gatherings where the latest on horticultural developments could be discussed while enjoying a libation or two. So, so civilized. So, so British, All that fruit and plant growing pretty much became a thing of the past.

If an Englishman wants to nibble on tropical fruit, Morrison’s, Sainsbury’s or Tesco will satisfy their cravings. The social role of conservatory, however,

is another matter. They have become an intricate part of the way people enjoy their homes, a special place away from the business part of an Englishman’s castle where he or she hangs “the brollie.”

This past weekend, we spent a day at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre, a sprawling 611-acre venue adjacent to the international airport here. Its an exhibition site that has some of the largest events ever held, including a 1991 dog show that attracted 22,973 dogs. On this Sunday though, there was hardly a dog to be seen, just acres and acres of exhibitors at a massive home building and renovations show.

I spoke at the show with a man who knows all about conservatories.

He represents Heritage Glass Rooms that builds such structures.

Tim Neenan assured me that the popularity of “oran-

geries” continues to be strong. “The feedback that we get is that the conservatory is considered to be the room in the house that people really want to live in,” says Tim. “It’s a place where people sit back with a glass of wine and listen to their music at the end of the day. And while they began historically as places for plants, now they are really that place where people want to spend as much time as possible.”

When I was growing up in Canada, I lived in an old run-down house.

The only “add-on” structure was a decrepit old porch that stored an oil tank for feeding a little space heater to keep our house warm during Canadian winters. In our world, growing oranges or sitting out in a glassed-in room was the least of our priorities. Strangely enough, I could see a stately 1870s built Victorian mansion just across our yard that

had a form of conservatory overlooking the estate’s sprawling gardens and lawns. While I once mused about living in such a stately mansion, I lost all interest over the years. Such places I discovered are bottomless money pits – hardly as luxurious close up than they are from afar.

I do though still love the idea of a conservatory – and if circumstances permit, we just might build one on to our house in Nova Scotia when we return from England. We are looking for a way to enjoy our lawns and gardens in all weather, protected from the elements by glass in the cold seasons and from insects in the summer by screens allowing breezes to pass through on hot summer days. It would be in such an English inspired “glass house” we will enjoy other treasures from abroad, including my Welsh music, a bottle or two of English wine

Bottled message from New York traces back to…. Thompson.

Readers may recall an article on May 11, about a message in a bottle discovered by Harlan Cordell, which he discovered along the banks of the Grass River. The note asked the finder to contact a postal box in Yonkers, New York, adding a sense of mystery to a strange artifact lucky to be discovered at all. As it turns out, however, its story begins much closer to home.

Since 1972, Former Thompsonite Tom Heimer has dropped over 28, 000 messages in bottles all over the world, from every state in the USA (except Hawai’i), every Canadian province and territory, to Cuba and the Caribbean, and throughout both Europe and what was then the Soviet Union. Over seventeen hundred of them have been found, and over 700 have been re-sent by their finders. Seven have crossed the Atlantic Ocean, though his longest release travelled 3218 kilometers, from Dauphin Island, Alabama to Atlantic Beach, North Carolina, by way of the Gulf of Mexico.

The bottle Cordell found is Heimer’s longest lasting parcel: the bottle had sat undisturbed for over twenty-five years, set loose March 25, 1991. “I took a drive in my old 1980 Honda Civic back then, to try and reach Pikwitonei on the winter roads,” he recalls.

“I have in my records eleven and a half miles south of Halfway River. There’s a bridge there on the allweather portion.”

A testament to northern Manitoba’s vast untapped wilderness, Heimer’s previous record was also a

to present the findings of the 2016 Homelessness Partnering Strategy Point in Time Count, conducted in Thompson on February 23 and 24. Jon Donovan, of the Community Advisory Board on Homelessness, was joined by Dr. Marleny Bonnycastle, assistant professor of social work at the University of Manitoba, and Dr. Colin Bonnycastle, associate professor of social work at U of M. The PIT count was similar to the one conducted in the winter of 2015 the prior year, sponsored by municipal organizations in February of last year. Jon Donovan, representing the Community Advisory Board on Homelessness, notes the

timing grants a greater degree of consistency for comparing results year-to-year.

But the 2016 PIT count is a federally-funded affair, with greater opportunities for information gathering and community exposure: “The big difference is that now we’ll have our data rolled up against other national communities,” he said. “This year we’ll get an exact difference as to how close or how far we are from other communities in Canada, and hopefully result in us being able to leverage additional dollars as well.”

The count emerged with 118 individuals verified to be homeless: The majority (61.2 percent) was lodged

First and foremost we would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of those people who came out to search for Nicholas after he went missing back on September 8th, 2015.

No matter what the weather conditions were, they showed up and were out until late in the evening and early morning. Also, the RCMP, and the Major Crimes Unit for searching and for their investigation. You should be proud of a job well done and for finding the three people responsible for taking Nicholas away from his family and friends.

in transitional housing or shelters, and 58% were considered chronically homeless (a fact which Donovan notes has risen slightly since last year’s count). Donovan noted that the number of sheltered individuals was an inversion from last year’s count, which found roughly 60 percent of respondents to be unsheltered.

Dr. Marleny Bonnycastle, a leading researcher on the project, noted that the majority of homeless individuals surveyed were adult males, with a mean age of 42. But while males made up 56 percent of surveyed individuals, females made up a gross majority of homeless individuals in Thompson less than 30 years of age.

Among the leading causes of initial homelessness reported were health and behaviour issues, predominantly substance abuse (34.1 percent) and domestic violence (26.4 percent).

New questions were also added to the homelessness survey which participants filled out: Questions surrounding personal history in the foster care system, for one, which yielded a 43.9 percent positive response.

“This is very high, and may raise some questions about how the foster care system is working,” noted Bonnycastle.

The 2016 count also elected to include women and mothers in crisis, and taking refuge in shelters and the Thompson Crisis Center. “The women who are living there are, for the most part, homeless,” noted Donovan. “The only other option is that they go home to domestic violence.” The count found that 26.4 percent of participants were fleeing some form of domestic conflict (whether with their partners or their guardians), and counted 20 children among 118 respondents who accompanied sheltered mothers. “We realized in this year’s data that we need not only single apartments for individuals,” explained Donovan, “but also two, three bedroom apartments for women with children.”

Bonnycastle had noted previously that the survey hoped to establish key communities whose members were experiencing high rates of homelessness.

The survey found that just over a third of individuals surveyed reported having arrived in Thompson within the last year. While the report identified over 17 different communities of origin, Nelson House was by far the single largest point of origin, representing 28.6 percent of Thompson’s homeless. The second, at

10.2 percent, was Split Lake.

Overall, the report points towards progress: discussion in the fi nal report cite Thompson’s Canadian Mental Health Association Executive Director Paulette Simpkins noting that the city’s cold weather initiatives have had a significant impact on the nightly load handled by the Thompson Homeless Shelter: “Despite the recent bitterly cold weather, far fewer people have stayed overnight in the warm up buildings at the city’s outdoor rinks this winter than last.”

Others have credited the success of Project Northern Doorway and other housing-fi rst initiatives with reducing the load on emergency shelter.

A profound concern that remained, however, was the continuing aboriginal over-representation in Thompson’s homeless population: While 36% of Thompson’s general population is estimated to self-identify as aboriginal, 90.8 percent of participants identified as such. Of those who arrived in Thompson within the last year, 88.9 percent had come from a northern Manitoban community.

“At minimum,” the report reads, “any way forward must include a more comprehensive understanding of the Northern Manitoba region and circular housing mobility.”

In presenting to City Council, Bonnycastle listed education as a key finding, noting that 81.7 percent “had some secondary school, or had graduated high school, or had some post secondary school”, a demographic she referred to as “quite highly educated”.

But the report itself suggests education shouldn’t be so quickly dismissed as a key factor: Among total participants, only 24.5 percent had received their high school diplomas, and only 3.1 percent cited enrollment in some kind of post-secondary program; In contrast, 65.3 percent have less than a high school education, with 11.2% of respondents having not proceeded passed the primary level.

Nonetheless, the report’s final discussion does acknowledge the high rate of youth homelessness, both among chronically homeless youth, and those who had first experienced homelessness as a youth. The report notes “These figures highlight that preventative programming and services are clearly needed in order to make sure that young people do not get caught up in a life of homelessness.”

At the MaMowWeTak Friendship Center, kids explored the world of science and engineering at the WISEKinetic science camp. University of Manitoba students Victoria Pueblo and Jenica Woitowicz guided kids through five days of plant and fungi

biology, forensic science and construction/engineering (where students constructed a chair out of nothing but newspaper and duct tape).

“It’s so exciting to see kids who are into science,” gushed Woitowicz. “Just for fun, we threw some university level stuff at them, and a kid was like, ‘Oh, that’s Schroedinger’s equation!’. We lost our minds.”

Students were particularly excited about Thursday’s activity, where they dissected a
