More than 100 Grade 12 students walked across the stage on June 25, accepted their diplomas, and started their lives as adults.

During the graduation ceremony the scholars had the chance to listen to many speeches, by many different professionals, including their principal Rob Fisher, and Mayor Dennis Fenske.

During these speeches, the talks revolved around what tips to give the graduating class, as well as advice for their adult lives. These include to always wear sunscreen, to do something daily that scares you and to never give up hope.

Students also listened to one classmate that prepared a speech as he was named valedictorian. Vishal Bhagria, who is hoping to attend University College of the North in the fall to pursue nursing, gave a heartwarming speech that started with a shout out to his mom. “Thank you for being there for me through the thick and thin, through the last 18 years. I would not be standing here right now if it wasn’t for you, I love you mom.”

The valedictorian also thanked the parents, guardians, grand parents, and aunts and uncles for the countless drives to school at minus 40, to picking up the students when they fell, and making them feel like winners even when they lost.

Bhagria thanked the teaching staff of R.D Parker Collegiate. “To our teachers, and to those who supported us throughout the years, thank you. Without all of your extra time and dedication this room would be empty. “ But the biggest message went out to his classmates, the gradating class of 2015. “This is the end of our high school period. There will never be a time like this ever again. We will never be together in a room like we are now. Not all of us will go to safe grad, and not all of us will return for our reunion, so while we’re all here now, I want to say don’t let the bad experiences cloud the good ones, don’t like the struggles cloud your triumphs, and don’t let your tears drown out your happiness.”

Bhagria said the most important lesson learned throughout his schooling experience was mastering the art of perseverance.

The night continued with awards being presented. Morgan Hanson-Oliveira, a graduating student with honours with distinction, came out on top after winning a School District Board of Trustees Student Award for Academic Excellence, the governor general’s bronze medal, nine local scholarships, as well as three non-local scholarships.

OBITUARIES ROBERTSON, RONALD WILLIAM “RON” – 76, Truro. It is with saddened hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Ronald William Robertson on Monday, June 22, 2015.

Born October 14, 1938, in Truro, he was a son of the late William and Alice (Lockhart) Robertson. Ron is survived by and will sadly missed by his daughters, Debbie Delaney, Debert; LeeAnne Gray, Winnipeg, Manitoba; grandchildren, Tyler (Danni) Delaney, Gray, Maine; Kelsey Delaney (Matt Cavanagh), Spruce Grove, Alberta; Toni (Jeremy) Lacroix, Jesse Gray; great grandson, Keenan Lacroix, all of Winnipeg, Manitoba; step children, Todd Guilford, Manitoba; Michelle Cardinal, Saskatchewan; Scott Guilford, Ontario, and their families; sister, Irma Pryor, North River; brothers, Owen, British Columbia; Darrell (Donna), Hilden; Roy (Gladys), Truro; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Mary Leppard; brothers, George, Douglas; grandson, Christopher Gray.

Equality is the name of the game for Thompson Pride

The second-annual Pride North of 55 event went off without a hitch during the week of June 22-27.

This year there were some changes, the biggest one being the declaration of Pride Week by the City of Thompson, and events took place all week throughout the city, with the theme of love is love.

On June 22, the City of Thompson raised a Pride flag at city hall during a flag-raising ceremony and there was a sweat lodge on June 23, and a youth dance on June 26, in partnership with R.D Parker Collegiate’s Gay Straight Alliance GLOW. On June 27 the indoor mini-festival took place with children performers, choirs, drummers, and some dance performances by Winnipeg drag queens, who came up for the event.

Michelle Smook, chairperson and founder of Pride North of 55, said this year marked a special point in time, with the United States and their Supreme Court ruling of marriage equal-

ity on June 26. “I would like to thank everyone who has supported our initiative, members of the LGBT community, allies, friends, family and community partners. Your support is what allows for us to occupy this space and bring this very important pride to Thompson.”

Niki Ashton, Churchill NDP MP was also in attendance, and noted that there should be more than just an event once a year for the LGBTQ [lesbian, gay, bisexual,transgendered and queer] community. “We’re here to celebrate Pride week, but every single day in our workplaces, in our schools, in our education faculties, our stores, and our homes, should be Pride friendly, it’s important that we all stand up for LGBTQ rights, and we stand up for diversity so that’s the message we’re sending.”

Irene Hilchey, 26 years a teacher, hung up her skates and said goodbye.

Hilchey had taught in Thompson for over two decades at Burntwood, then Eastwood, and now kindergarten at École Riverside School. She had decided not to attend the local teachers’ retirement event.

Dianne Dick and Joan Dawson, Retired Teachers’ Association of Manitoba, phoned ahead. “Irene, we once taught with you and now you are retiring. May we bring a treat over for you and yours?”

The answer was immediate. “The children would love that.”

Thumbs up a to a pretty good approach to life, eh, sharing your treat. So the best to you Mrs. Hilchey, and on to your new life.

PC leader wants Ashton to resign over conflict of interest The opposition is alleging that Thompson NDP MLA and infrastructure minister Steve Ashton tried to have his department order floodfighting equipment from a business owned by a friend of his who has donated to Ashton’s leadership and election campaigns in the past.

Progressive Conservative (PC) leader and leader of the Opposition Brian Pallister said June 23 that he would ask Premier Greg Selinger to demand Ashton’s resignation for what he termed an “undeclared conflict.”

“Their premier knew about this relationship throughout and did nothing about it, didn’t ask the minister to step aside, didn’t try to protect the impartiality of the process, did nothing, in fact, aided and abetted the minister in doing this wrong to Manitoba taxpayers,” Pallister said June 23.

“It is essential that he take immediate action to remove this minister from an obvious conflicted situation, an ethical transgression that cannot be repeated which puts our tendering process into doubt and the fairness of our government in doubt.”

Swindlers posing as the taxman

Thompson RCMP are warning residents not to fall for a scam in which fraudsters pose as representatives of the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and other organizations demanding payment or claiming that the person has a refund due.

In one variation of the scam, people receive a phone call or email from someone purporting to represent the CRA informing them they have a refund owing and that they need to

provide personal information to receive it. Another version sees would-be victims informed that they have back taxes owing and must make a payment immediately to avoid a fine.

Sometimes they are told there is an outstanding warrant that can be avoided by prompt payment. Some people have been told that they could be deported if their back taxes aren’t paid immediately.

People who receive such calls should verify that the information they’ve re-

ceived is true before providing any personal details over the phone or by email by calling the CRA to confirm if there are back taxes owing or a refund is due.

Police say various other telephone scams are also frequently used.

If you receive suspicious calls like this, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud centre at 1-888-495-8501. More information about fraud scams involving the CRA can be found at the CRA webpage at www.cra-arc. gc.ca/ntcs/bwr-eng.html.

Drugs bound forTadoule Lake seized at airport

Cocaine, codeine and marijuana were seized

by RCMP June 23 from a 19-year-old woman trying to transport them to Tadoule Lake.

Thompson RCMP received a report of drugs at the Thompson airport and a search revealed that Melody Duck was in possession of 60 individual portions of cocaine, 395 tablets of codeine and 92 grams of marijuana.

Duck is charged with

possession of cocaine and codeine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of over 30 grams of mari-

juana. She was released on her own recognizance and is due to appear in court in Thompson on Sept. 18.

“The only contract that has been awarded was with funding from the federal government,” Ashton said.

“The Ombudsman looked at this matter in November and did not find anything at that time. I have already indicated that I welcome the Ombudsman revisiting the issue.”

The PCs also issued a press release June 24 showing that Ginakes and his sister Phyllis made donations to Steve Ashton’s party leadership campaign, his daughter Niki Ashton’s campaign for the leadership of the federal NDP and to the provincial NDP party in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, with the largest donations coming in 2009 and 2011, the same years in which MIT made its largest purchases of Tiger Dams equipment, about $5 million in the 2009/10 fiscal year and approximately $3 million in 2011/12.

Steve Ashton ran for the leadership of the provincial NDP in 2009 and there was a provincial election in 2011. Donations from Peter and Phyllis Ginakes totalled about $6,000 in 2009 and more than $4,000 in 2011.

During Ashton’s tenure as infrastructure minister, the PCs allege, approximately 70 per cent of flood-fighting equipment purchases have been from Ginakes.

OBITUARY BARBARA TAPLEY Barbara Tapley passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 27, 2015. She was 77.

Barb was born and raised in Radisson, SK. She survived a bout of rheumatic fever and polio in her childhood leaving her with health complications that surfaced later in life. She moved to The Pas, MB in 1956 and trained as a nurse’s aide working at the TB Sanatorium affectionately known as ‘the san’. Barb loved her work and enjoyed meeting new people.

She had a lot of fond memories of the people she had met and was well known in the community of The Pas. Barb moved with her family to Thompson, MB in 1963. During her time in Thompson she was involved in the snowmobile club and was one of the first families to live on Sauger Crescent. She had a lot of history of the early years of Thompson and made a lot of friendships that continued thru out the years. She moved back to The Pas in 1971 where she always had a pot of coffee on and time for a visit. She moved for a short period of time back to Radisson in 1989 but decided to relocate to Thompson where her children and grandchildren lived, staying there until her illness facilitated her transfer to Winnipeg.

Barb is survived by her daughters and son-in-laws, Bonnie SmithFroude & Dwight Froude of Winnipeg, MB and Connie & Jaye Cameron of Elgin, MB; four grandchildren, Stephanie, Chris, Tyler and Becky and 3 great-grandchildren Brielle, Ciara and Max. She is preceded in death by her father Raymond & her mother Gladys.

Barb will be buried in a private ceremony, as per her wishes.

Canada’s benefits should be available to all

C

anada has much to be proud of in its 148-year history, from valiant contributions during two world wars to the establishment of universal health care and its Supreme Court recognizing years earlier than the equivalent body in the United States, which finally did so last week, that – if equality is truly an ideal to which we aspire – the government shouldn’t confer the material advantages bestowed by the institution of marriage to one set of people – the heterosexual ones – while denying those rights to same-sex couples.

It also played a role in significant events in other countries, such as serving as the safe haven at the end of the underground railway, the coalition of abolitionists and believers in human rights (before the term came into vogue) who worked together to safely transport escaped AfricanAmerican slaves from the southern United States to a new home from which they were safe from being captured and transported back into involuntary servitude.

Before Canada was a country, the transformation of what was then the colony of New France into British North America saw the French-descended set-

tlers allowed to keep their lands and language and even some of their civil institutions, which live on to this day in the province of Quebec.

But the popular image of Canada’s two solitudes – the French and English – coming together to create a country in which all were equal, as exemplified by the right of citizens to be served by their government in either official language – English or French – is, almost literally, a whitewashed version of history that denies or at the very least overlooks the existence of First Nations people, who were here long before any Europeans and, in many cases, have never had their territorial rights extinguished by force or negotiated settlement.

Now, almost a centuryand-a-half later, the plight of aboriginal people is still Canada’s dirty little secret, though lately more and more details about the way they have been treated since the time of Confederation and continue to be today have been coming out.

In the past month, Canada has seen the release of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) executive summary of its upcoming final report, which is nearly 400 pages detailing

the horrible abuses and neglect that the federal government, in cooperation with other organizations like churches, inflicted upon aboriginal people for decades through the residential school system, which Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government symbolically apologized for in 2008, though little has been done to redress historical wrongs in the intervening years. The newly elected NDP government of Alberta recently issued its own apology for the same system, which was intended to “civilize” First Nations by stripping them of their cultural identity and language, in contrast to the way French settlers were

treated by the British government. Here in Manitoba, the provincial government issued an apology for the Sixties Scoop, which saw large numbers of First Nations, Métis and Inuit children taken from their and adopted by non-aboriginal people, in some cases out of the country, even overseas.

The RCMP also recently updated its report on missing and murdered indigenous women, which clearly demonstrates that aboriginal women are killed or go missing at a much higher rate than the percentage of Canada’s population they represent, regardless of who is responsible for these acts.

I was recently in Winnipeg for an appointment.

My husband wanted to go to Canadian Tire in Winnipeg just to look around.

I noticed that the mitre saw stand that was in the summer catalogue was in stock there. I told my husband to buy it. He said we should support the Thompson Canadian Tire and buy it at home. On Saturday, June 20 we went into our local

for delivery for an item they should be carrying in the local store already. If they can find it in Winnipeg there is no shortage of this item.

I informed my husband if you see something you like at Canadian Tire out of town buy it there from now on.

I also will wait for my raincheck to come in September.

First Nations students are funded at a lower level per capita than those in provincially funded schools. When a fire breaks out, people in First Nations communities can’t be certain that a working fire truck will show up with adequate water to put out the blaze before lives and property are lost.

It’s appropriate today for people from coast to coast to coast to express their appreciation and love for the country of their birth or the new home that they chose as immigrants. But loving something doesn’t mean you should overlook its flaws. Canada has come a long way since 1867. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a long way still to go.

and moving forward, but for too long, Canadians haven’t even done that much. What’s more, that’s just one step in a longerterm project of improving the lives of aboriginal people so they are no longer a marginalized underclass.

For all the things that are great about Canada, it is still a country where certain citizens are segregated in isolated communities with little hope of taking part in the broader economy. It is a country in which many First Nations do not have drinkable water, or functioning sewer systems or a high school where their children can complete the education that most of the rest of the country takes for granted.

Did you know that nothing we do in our lives will ever matter? Unless, it is about loving our Higher Power and loving the people He has made.

Complications do happen in any relationship, but when

we truly care for someone, their mistakes, their failures never change our feelings about them. That’s because our minds get angry, but our hearts still care. Do we consider how hard it is to change ourselves? Yes, and we will understand what little change we have made in trying to change others.

Have we reached a point in our lives where “life is complicated?” Do we now have that feeling that it’s no longer necessary to try and improve anyone? If they like me the way I am, good, and if they don’t it’s their loss.

Pride makes me proud

G

rowing up in a small town in Nova Scotia, with 3,000 people and one stop light, I had never experienced a Pride event before.

I had seen pictures and videos of friends who had went to them throughout Canada, but on Saturday it was my time to experience one.

A room full of rainbows, and balloons, and people being proud of themselves,

and who they are. To top it off, it was an inclusive and non-judging environment, and it was breathtaking.

Not to mention the fact that the MP for Churchill Niki Ashton was in attendance as well as our MLA Steve Ashton, showing that our government supports the LGBTQ community.

The Pride events this year were great, and I can only imagine what next year is going to bring, but until next year, I hope people will start accepting everyone for themselves every single day, and not just once a year.

Grade 8 students part of a human rights project

Last year a pilot project started in Juniper Elementary School called Educating for Action with the then Grade 7 students, now Grade 8. The project contains a number of different themes including career development, positive self-identity, cultural efficiency, academics, community connecting, as well as a digital lodge piece. The hope of the project was to encourage and help the 35 students succeed and graduate.

Throughout the year filmmakers Jim Sanders and Mike Maryniuk traveled to Thompson every few months to work with the students to help produce a 45-minute film, which was shown to students, family and community members on June 17.

During the times the filmmakers weren’t here,

students filmed videos with Thompson community members that work in the human rights field, which was the overlaying theme for the project.

Interviews included Paulette Simkins about the right to shelter, and Julyda Lagimodiere, with the Manitoba Metis Federation. Students also learned about different leaders like Malala Yousafzai, Martin Luther King, and Louis Riel Tanner Nowlin, one of the Grade 8 students, noted it was great seeing the finished video. “I felt really accomplished. It made me smile a lot seeing all the work we did this year for everyone to see. I was really happy to see that, it was a long process.”

Part of the video was about the right to a clean environment, which Thompson did not have.

Elementary School teacher, worked with students to write letters to city council about passing a resolution for the right to a clean environment. The students also produced a video explaining why they felt this should be a right, which was included in the ditgital lodge movie. Student Teisha Linklater says since the right is not in the constitution, she hopes council will do something about that. “To be honest I didn’t think I knew very much about us not having the right to a healthy environment, so I was quite surprised when I found out. Before we had the right to a healthy environment, I don’t think many people in Thompson knew that we didn’t have that right either. It would be really cool if we could do it, working together with the northern communities in the north to promote it.”

of a big popular thing.”

Thompson is now the fourth city in the province with a right to a clean environment. The Pas, Dunnottar and Whitemouth are the other cities in Manitoba that have had the right declared by city councillors.

The project will follow these students until they graduate, and will showcase all they’re doing to better themselves, and the world they live in.

Both Nowlin and Linklater hope other schools in Thompson will follow in their footsteps, in creating a better community for all.

Thompson marathoner 25th runner to cross finish line in Winnipeg

Twenty-plus Thompsonites took part in Manitoba Marathon events in Winnipeg June 21, with the bulk completing the halfmarathon course.

Kristopher Joy was the fastest Thompsonite in the full marathon event, finishing 25th overall at 3:12:18.7, making him the 23rd male runner across the line and the fourth-fastest in the male 25 to 29-yearold category. The nextfastest from Thompson was Germaine Leger, who was 146th overall at 3:53:03.1, the 20th woman over the line and the second-fastest 50- to 54-year-old female runner. Not far

behind Leger was Hash Peraeira, who crossed the line in 3:53:45.8, 149th overall and 23rd of 56 runners in the male 50- to 54-year-old category. Carla Risley was the next Thompsonite to finish, with a time of 4:16:13.6, 281st overall, 61st among women and seventh in the female 25to 29-year-old category.

The final Nickel City marathoner to cross the line was Vuong Pham at 5:11:14, 483rd overall, 349th among male runners and 34th in the male 30- to 34-year-old category.

Jeff Lampole was the fastest runner from Thompson in the halfmarathon, crossing the finish line at 1:47:09.1,

40sth overall, while Suzanna Bruce, who finished in 1:56:14, was Thompson’s fast female half-marathoner, finishing 826th overall.

Other half-marathon finishers from Thompson were Raymond Kitchen, Stephanie Samuel, Crystal Zimmer, Louise Stuart, Mayor Dennis Fenske, Raymond Beaupre, Carmen Ho, Brian Barton, Kelly Scallion, Daniel Pegus, Karen Beaupre, Stephanie Beaupre and Trish Saunders.

Rayanne Neckoway was one of two Thompson runners in the 10-kilometre race, finishing 416th with a time of 1:07:11.2, while Ana Pereira was 779th with a time of 2:00:08.6.

Grant buys high school weight equipment The athletics department of R.D Parker Collegiate were awarded a $6,226.27 grant from the Thompson Community Foundation on June 23. The money bought the high school weight room a new elliptical trainer and a multipurpose machine, seen in the background.
