YVONNE ETHIER 1951 - 2016

It’s with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, sister, and friend Yvonne Ethier on June 30, 2016 surrounded by family.

Yvonne was born on September 19, 1951 in Birch River, Manitoba where she attended school and met her husband Horace. They married and moved to Thompson where they raised their family and lived for 30 years. After retiring they moved to Bellsite, Manitoba where they lived until their passings.

Yvonne had a heart of gold and left a memory on everyone she met.

She enjoyed cooking, gardening, and her family and friends were her pride and joy.

Yvonne was predeceased by her father, mother, and husband Horace.

She leaves to mourn her children: Wade (Fiona), Nadine (Richard), and Kyle. She also leaves behind her “babies� Danielle, Rochelle, Kaylen, Dawson, Jenelle, Jordon, and Aubrey.

A funeral service was held from the Bellsite Community Hall on July 9, 2016 at 1:00 pm with Father Roy Vazhaplankudiyil ofÂżciating.

Interment followed in the Bellsite Cemetery.

April 23, 1937- July 4, 2016

It is with deep regret that we announce the sudden passing of Nelson (Mack) MacDonald on the 4th of July, 2016, at Thompson General Hospital at the age of 79.

Mack was predeceased by his parents, Angus and Elizabeth MacDonald, sister, Mary (Donnie) Campbell, and daughter, Karen Praught.

A memorial to the accident’s victims, located near the site of the accident on Commercial Place and Thompson Drive.

Left to morn Mack is his wife, Ruth MacDonald, son Joseph (Kim) MacDonald, daughter Shelley MacDonald and his cat, Cleo. Older children, Verna, Kathy, Susan and Michael and families, niece, Carol Campbell.

A fatal auto collision near the intersection of Thompson Drive and Commercial Place claimed the lives of two local youth in the late hours of July 5, 2016.

Current assessments indicate the two victims, aged 17 and 18 years old, were crossing the street when they were struck by the oncoming vehicle. The 17 year-old male was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 18 year-old, located further from the scene, succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

The driver then struck a nearby hydro pole, causing considerable damage; Manitoba Hydro crews were dispatched to replace the pole in the following days.

22 year-old Chelsea Melody Flett was taken into custody at the scene of the accident, and has been charged with two counts of impaired driving causing death, two counts of dangerous driving causing death, obstructing police, taking a motor vehicle without consent, two counts of criminal negligence causing death, as well as two counts of breaching probation. The investigation is ongoing.

A candlelight vigil was held for the victims on July 7 at the scene of the accident, where a tribute has remained throughout the weekend.

away. Sometimes the letters contained a few bucks so I could enjoy a beer or two in nearby Hull, Quebec. No matter what, they always gave me a warm feeling. My letters, too, perhaps were well-received. I am sure my parents laughed when I wrote of having thrown a red shirt in the wash with white underwear. Out of that, I boasted of the largest supply of pink underwear of any male student at Ottawa’s Carleton University.

Letters had a much more “visceral” effect than any email or a text. The writer had touched the paper, usually written words in their own handwriting.

They had licked the stamp and trundled over to a corner mailbox all to tell you about what was going on in their life. I remember the 1950s Perry Como variety show that featured a segment where he read out letters from fans asking him to sing their favourite tunes. “We get letters. We get letters; stacks and stacks of letters. Dear, Perry, would you be so kind to fill a request? And sing the song I like best.”

It was a letter-writing bond that gifted him connectivity with his fans. Pop singer Perry Como is, however, long, long gone. I doubt if his show was still around today, a jingle about getting emails would have the same cachet.

The apparent demise of letter writing has contributed to the financial ills of

postal services across the world. It is not unlike what happened with telegrams that pretty much have gone the way of the dodo bird. I started thinking about letter writing because we are far away from home here in Solihull, England. It made me realize that many years ago letters would have been the prime way of staying in touch with friends and family. Now in 2016, we will neither send nor receive even one letter while living here. You can bet, though, that the number of emails and texts will be legion. And I doubt none will evoke even a modicum of emotion like letters did for people so long ago. I don’t think a “letter revival” is imminent. That ship sailed a long time ago. I do, however, have fondness for the style of letter writing and admire those who still write letters. Given my failing handwriting abilities, I will do the world a favour and let others put pen to paper.

Dear Perry...

BY DANIEL MCSWEENEY Most young people today don’t write letters. They text, tweet and Facebook almost as much as they breathe. Letter writing was what their parents did when Harold Wilson was U.K. Prime Minister; Lyndon B. Johnson was U.S. President and Pierre Trudeau was Canada’s PM. Back then doctors still made house calls, some elevators were still not self-service (some say dinosaurs still roamed the earth) and Perry Como crooned on Saturday night TV. Letters were the prime way people stayed close to each other in those “ancient” times and we could always find time to write them.

I just read that only half of 120,000 British teenagers taking part in a communications survey had written anything coming close to a “proper letter.”

And even a large number of adults “admitted to abandoning old-fashioned pen and ink, with one in four claiming they couldn’t recall the last time they ac-

tually wrote a letter.” According to London-based writer and actor Michael Simkins, “faced with the choice between tradition and style or convenience and economy, we’ve all succumbed without a backward glance.” He’s right – although I can recall writing my last letter in 2007.

It was, however, a painful exercise. I am not referring to letter content; it was actually quite pleasant to share news with an old friend. It was painful in the sense that the physical act of handwriting caused me grief. It was hard on the fingers and by the time I was finished I vowed to never do it again. More painful I fear was the tedious process the letter receiver had to endure: deciphering my scrawlings. It would seem that the warning “use it or lose it” clearly applies. My handwriting was never all that good in the first place and after years of using keyboards, it was worse than any doctor’s scribbled prescription.

I was, though, not writing to a pharmacist so I worry the reader tossed it out into the rubbish puzzled at why I had even bothered writing something so “illegible.”

No wonder I never got a letter back!

There is no doubt the frequency and timeliness of communications has increased dramatically in the 21st century. It seems all we do is communicate; from the first

light of dawn to when we charge our iPhone overnight. My day is filled with texting and emailing like everyone else. There is no doubt the speed of being able to communicate almost instantly is important in a world travelling at the speed of light. And it’s not only in our work lives; but in our personal communications too.

SIGNIFICANT WRITING Modern communications is hardly like letter writing from the past.

People now “shoot from the hip” with instant messaging, sometimes perhaps regretting pulling the trigger so quickly. Modern electronic methods also don’t tell “life stories” like letters.They simply scatter a bunch of words out, at times with reckless abandon. Consider what can happen when a trunk of old letters is discovered in an attic. When assembled, they can form a body of “significant writing” and can possibly be turned into a book. As for emails, tweets, texts and the like, I doubt if they have the same literary potential.

Letter writing is a much more thoughtful communications process. You sat down at a writing desk and formulated your thoughts, crafting words that might get read over and over again until the paper crinkles at the edges.

They were like chapters of life stories metered out

to you from people whose lives mattered to you. And because they put so much effort into writing them; they spoke volumes about how they cared for you too. Admittedly, letter writing all took time and effort and forced you to think deeply about what you wanted to communicate.

But they were worth it.

I remember my mother waiting for letters from her sister in New England.

She would get this look that said, “get out of my way so I can read what she has to say.” And then she broke the seal reading its contents almost before the envelope fell to the floor.

I recall her satisfied look when the news was good and the frown when it was bad. “Oh my,” she would say shaking her head. “I must write her back tonight.” And that she did, hunkering down with pen in hand and filling a few pieces of stationary with words that brought a smile to her sister’s face in faraway Maine. She would then affix a four cent stamp with a glowing satisfaction of accomplishment and walk to the nearest mailbox.

When I was away in university in the late 1960s, I always looked forward to mail from home. My spirits brightened when one arrived, perhaps from my parents or girlfriend. They offered a strong sense of connectivity with folks more than 1,000 miles

Northern families carry healing and love from Thompson to Winnipeg in support of missing and murdered indigenous men.

Last week, on July 3, the friends and families of missing and murdered indigenous men began the Walk for Healing and Love, a three-day, 750km+ journey from Thompson to Winnipeg to raise awareness of the pervasive issue of violence facing northern communities.

While much attention has been garnered surrounding the prevalence of missing and murdered indigenous women. But as event organizer Jacqueline Walker notes, MMIW is just the tip of the iceberg, noting, “The focus has been on the women, but when you look at the stats, the majority of people being murdered are men.�

Walker describes a profound lack of resources for the friends and families of victims. While she cited the support work being done

by Thompson’s Homicide Grievance Support Group, she notes that the group can only reach so many in need: A lot of people grieve in isolation. They don’t have services in their commun-

since the RCMP searches ended. Based on the new information, Beardy was slated to begin his searches on the river the next day.“ I would have to turn around if they found something.

The Flett family isn’t the only family to have taken investigation into their own hands: Deliah Saultier, and her sister Jo, were walking for Deliah’s son Mark Dumas. One of Dumas’ murderers is currently on trial for ďŹ rst degree murder, largely, they say, due to the family’s own investigations: it had been the family that had discovered the body, as well as the murder weapon, still covered in Dumas’ blood.

Nonetheless, Jo notes

that reaching that reaching that point was a constant struggle against what the family felt was a considerable prejudice on the part of investigating ofďŹ cers; So much so, that Jo had ďŹ led a complaint with the RCMP commissioner, which remains under investigation. “It was the RCMP who laughed at us when we recorded them, who chased us away,â€? said Jo, referencing an incident where an armed officer had allegedly pursued her brother for approaching the property. “As native people, we need the RCMP to look into our cases.

Deliah notes that the family continues to seek justice for their son, noting the murder was part of a much broader family conspiracy. “The people who killed my son are still walking the streets, bragging about how much blood they hand to clean up.�

Jaqueline Walker, along with her husband Felix, walked for his brother Lyle, who had been murdered in September of 2007. Felix noted that his family had been privileged to have a strong support system behind them. But even then, he feels that the court system had fell short. Lyle’s killer had been apprehended and charged: however, “mitigating circumstancesâ€? had led to a paltry sentence: a manslaughter charge carrying a ďŹ fteen-month curfew. “The justice system doesn’t take into account the families of victims,â€? he said. “He took our brother’s life. He robbed us of the opportunity to be with my brother for the rest of his natural life. We need to have appropriate punishment for taking away lives and harming people; our loved ones don’t get a second chance.â€?
