After travelling 1,700 kilometres across the province of Manitoba (with a brief detour into Ontario), the Roly McLenahan Torch finally made its way to Thompson July 6 to help celebrate the upcoming 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. For Thursday’s relay, the torch was passed between 10 different runners who completed a five-kilometre route that started at the Manitoba Hydro office on Station Road and looped around to MacLean Park via Mystery Lake Road and Thompson Drive. Thursday’s festivities kicked off with an opening ceremony at the Manitoba Hydro office, where torch relay co-ordinator Katharine Cherewyk explained the importance of the Canada Summer Games, which is the largest multi-sport event for young athletes in the country. “The torch relay is carrying the excitement of the games across Manitoba at different locations,” she said. “We started the torch’s journey in Ottawa on June 6, and now we’re travelling through all of our torch relays and we’re really excited to be in Thompson.” The torchbearers who physically carried the flame through Thompson comprised individuals from various ages and backgrounds, who either applied for this position or were nominated by someone else. One of the local runners for Thursday’s relay was Rotary Club president San-

In preparation for the big event on July 6 Ross-Hitch said she ran around her house carrying an eightpound weight, which is the supposed heft of the actual Roly McLenahan Torch. “It seemed to be heavier than I anticipated it to be,” she said, a concern that was echoed by many of her fellow torchbearers during the run. “Some did the two handed carry, I did one and switched it off about every 30 seconds to each hand so that it was balanced.” Despite some mild discomfort, Ross-Hitch said she had a “great time” carrying the flame on this sunny July morning. Manitoba Winter Games host society, Ross-Hitch recognizes the underlining importance of these athletic competitions and rituals, especially since this is the 50th Canada Summer Games and the second to ever to be held in Manitoba. “It’s really good for them to reach out to everybody in Manitoba,” she said. “Because when you have those kind of games, the Canada Games, it’s not just for Winnipeg. It’s for Manitobans.” Following Thursday’s relay in Thompson the torch was heading south to pass through The Pas, Dauphin, Gimli, Sagkeeng/Great Falls and Brandon before arriving at its final destination: Winnipeg.
