A familiar face is hoping to be the next premier of Manitoba. Thompson MLA Steve Ashton resigned as minister of infrastructure and transportation and minister responsible for emergency measures Dec. 22, and announced plans to run for the leadership of the Manitoba NDP the next day. Ashton says he is running for multiple reasons, but the most vocal reason is wanting to reconnect the province. “I think I can play a key role in reconnecting with our party and with the people of Manitoba. I think that’s very important currently given a lot of what’s happened over the last period of time.”
Ashton says he will be putting forward an ambitious agenda for Manitoba. “What I’m going to be putting forward is a vision for the government and for our party. It’s a vision where we take full advantage of our potential in the province. There are a lot of good things happening. We have the second-best economy in Canada right now. The premier appoints the leaders, and I just thought it was the right thing.” One of the biggest differences between premier Greg Selinger and Ashton is the one per cent hike in provincial sales tax (PST). During Ashton’s kickoff, he promised a referendum for the PST, something he was for when it came into effect. “I’ve made it clear when I

We have to go to the next level and
give them the opportunity to have their say through a referendum. That’s a different view from the premier’s view and I just felt it was the right thing to do.” Ashton says the majority Continued on Page 2
