The 2018 Manitoba Games host society is about halfway to its goal of 1,000 volunteers with less than two months to go until the games start March 4 and signed up about 50 more Jan. 13 during a recruitment drive during the grand opening of the new games store in the City Centre Mall. “We’re encouraging people to get signed up before Jan. 26,” said Manitoba Games communications committee chair Bruce Krentz. “Up until then we can basically guarantee you get the spot you want. After that, we still need you but you might not be doing exactly your A-number one job.” From now until the start of the games, the store, in the old Peoples Jewellers space, will be open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer registrations can also be done online at www.manitobagames.ca. “It’s going to take you a bit of time to get registered,” said Krentz. “It’s not a oneminute process, probably about 10 minutes or so.” The host society is also

The first, Thompson Where the Heart Is, will include two tickets on Calm Air and coupons from local businesses and attractions. “The premise is to bring somebody up to Thompson in the next six months,”

Ross-Hitch says, and tickets are $5 each. The second raffle includes two tickets to the Winnipeg Jets-Dallas Stars game in Winnipeg on March 18 along with return airfare from Thompson and two nights at the Marlborough Hotel and tickets are $10 each or three for $20. “That draw will be done during the games so you’ll have about a week’s no-

tice,” says Ross-Hitch. “We’ve prepackaged that and pre-booked your flights and everything for that. That’s a Sunday night game so we’ve booked tentative Calm Air tickets for Saturday morning, back Monday morning so you don’t miss any work.” Another fundraiser coming up is a pair of performances of The Dixie Swim Club by the Thompson

Playhouse at the Letkemann Theatre on the evening of Feb. 23 and afternoon of Feb. 24. The return of the popular production will cost $10 per person and all proceeds will go toward the Manitoba Games. Tickets are available at Quality Inn & Suites, Co-op and the Manitoba Games office at the Thomson Regional Community Centre. “I can’t thank this community enough because they always step forward to help with whatever’s going on in this community, so thank you to the Thompson Playhouse,” said RossHitch. “That’s the way to support us and support local artists.” A pep rally for volunteers will be held Feb. 13 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the MaMow-We-Tak Friendship Centre with a performance by a local band. “They’re going to get us roaring to go, ready to go,” said Ross-Hitch. “You’ll pick up your accreditation there.” “Entrance music to the Northstar games is provided by that band so if you’re a regular Northstars fan you’ll kind of know what it’s going to be,” said Krentz.
