For husband and wife Ben Weber, 33, and Natalia Ameida, 29, a normal day is bicycling from morning to night. Weber, originally from Scotland, and Ameida, from Brazil, are currently completing the Cetaphil Arctic Canada expedition.

The two started the south to north Canadian journey in Emerson, Manitoba, and are making their way to the second-most northern settlement in Canada – Resolute Bay, Nunavut. So far they’ve been cycling, and will switch to skis once they leave Gilliam.

Weber said after one year of marriage the two were

living a comfortable life in Brazil, but it lacked a little excitement. “Three-and-a-bit years ago we were both in our jobs, with a comfortable life, not good or bad, but Sao Paulo is a complicated city, around 18 million people, so it’s commuting to work a couple of hours there and back. There is no outdoor life, and something was kind of missing for us.”

Weber, who worked as a consultant for people investing in Brazil, and Ameida, a television video editor, decided to pursue their interest in geography through a pole-to-pole expedition from south to north, but would need some training beforehand.

“Cycling is easy actually but you need to get the body shape, then your body gets used to it very fast. The first thing we actually started with was going to a nutritionist, then we started rock climbing, and weightlifting,” Ameida says.

They decided they would do training expeditions, too.

One was crossing the United Kingdom on bicycle. “We decided to do that in winter, because people do cycle from one side to the other, but we wanted to add on the extra challenge, to get us out of the comfort zone. With the polar environments here [Thompson], we knew we were going to be well out of our comfort zones.”

After the 1,500-kilometre cycle across the U.K., the next stop was mountaineering in Bolivia. The mountains were around 21,000 feet high, and something they had never done before. To switch it up, and to train in hotter conditions, Weber and Ameida cycled across South America in October. Temperatures got higher than 40 Celsius, and the route was 3,600 kilometres.

“These were completely out of our comfort zone, to give us challenges, which would be demanding of us, so we could get used to reacting to different situations,” said Weber.

The company is also providing creams and ointments for the couple to treat their exposed skin with while going through the north.

Weber and Ameida arrived in Thompson Jan. 7, and were offered a warm bed to sleep in by Tim and Jean Cameron, who also host Home Route concerts in town. “We actually met them on the road when we were getting out of Moosehorn. They were travelling up to Thompson,” says Ameida. The Camerons got to Thompson five hours later and didn’t see Weber and Ameida for 10 days.

OBITUARIES FRANK (FRANCIS) DE RUYCK

Recycling centre has successful year for city standards

It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Frank De Ruyck on January 9, 2015 at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, at the age of 69 years. Frank is survived by his beloved wife Nicci (nee Hawkins), sons Ken, Ed (Jill), Collin (Carla), Kirk (Toulany), Tim (Sherry), daughter Danielle (Chris), grandchildren Devin, Jacob, Emma, Mason, Marina, Braden, Andrew, sister Anita, brothers Gerry (Marie Paule), Bert, and numerous extended family members and friends. Frank was predeceased by his daughter, Mona.

Frank was born in Swan Lake, Manitoba on January 6, 1946. Frank spent his entire life in Manitoba, living in Swan Lake, Thompson, and in Winnipeg since 1997. Frank’s working life included several occupations, including dairy farmer, taxi driver, animal control officer, city inspector (Thompson), restaurant owner (Ed’s, Dairy Dog), cook, security guard, and school bus driver. Frank’s career was spent primarily in the restaurant industry, and he took great pride in his cooking.

Spending time with family was very important to Frank, and he very much enjoyed family gatherings. Along with cooking for his family, Frank enjoyed his home and spending time in the yard.

The family wishes to thank the staff and volunteers at the Victoria General Hospital. A funeral service is planned for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Thomson “In the Park” Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, Manitoba, interment and reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria General Hospital Foundation.

The Thompson Recycling Centre (TRC) surpassed their goal for 2014.

“The goal was to reach and process a million kilograms, and every year we’ve strived to hit that number,” said TRC manager Billie-Jo Thompson at the regular meeting of council Jan. 5. “This year thanks to outlying communities and the community putting more in the recycling bins we’ve reached that goal and exceeded it by approximately 20,000 kilograms.”

This past year was a very big year for the TRC, said Thompson. “In partnership with Recycle Everywhere we targeted multi-family dwellings in the community and provided bins to make recycling accessible to everyone. This has provided a three per cent increase or 30,000 extra kilograms of material annually.”

The centre also participated in the Westminster sherry bottle program, where the bottles are collected from the Thompson Inn, the City of Thompson and the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission. Since the beginning of July, the TRC has collected and processed around 20,000 sherry bottles. “Those bottles would have otherwise ended up in our landfill,” stated Thompson.

Every month now the recycle centre processes around 90,000 kilograms of material. Thompson says the difference from 2013 to 2014 is undeniable. “Between 2013 and 2014 there’s a difference of about 100,000 kilograms of material that we’ve collected. That’s a large amount.” In 2013 Thompson recycled a total of 912,077 kilograms of recycling, compared to 2012, where the city recycled 835,883 kilograms.

Graph from Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba 2013 annual report The north may be low on the totem pole when it comes to recycling in Manitoba, but the Thompson Recycle Centre hit their goal for 2014. meeting Mayor Dennis Fenske read some statistics about what is recycled in Thompson, which were given to the council in a graph form. “Cardboard is 44 per cent and just over 400,000 kilograms, box board is 12 per cent at 110,000 kilograms, and newsprint is at 29 per cent, at 267,000 kilograms.”

A Jan. 6 City of Thompson press release breaks down what recycling is doing to help save the planet. “A few of the noteworthy numbers include: for every ton of recycled paper, we save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4,000 kilowatts of energy and 7,000 gallons of water. We recycled 26 tons of paper in 2014.” It went on to say that every plastic bottle someone recycles will save enough energy to power a 60 watt light bulb for up to three hours. Each year Thompson processes about 25,000 kilograms of plastic drink bottles.

Arielle Gurevich, communications manager with Recycle Everywhere/The Canadian Beverage Container Recycling Association, says Manitoba is one of the leading provinces in recycling. “In 2013, Manitobans recycled the most

empty beverage containers in a single year since the CBCRA introduced the Recycle Everywhere program in 2010. CBCRA’s annual recovery rate of empty beverage containers recycled in the province increased from 53 per cent in 2012 up to 61 per cent in 2013. The recovery rate was 49 and 42 per cent in 2011 and 2010 respectively.”

Although, Manitoba as a whole is doing fairly well when it comes to recycling, the north is a little behind. In the 2013 annual report through Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba, the north is the fourth lowest in recycled kilograms out of eight regions. In the bottom spot is south central Manitoba, coming in at 59.64 kilograms recycled per capita. The population for that region is 81,597.

Second to the bottom is central west, population 23,897, recycling 61.14 kilograms per person. The north is recycling 61.20 kilograms per capita, with a population of 31,973. In top spot is the Winnipeg area recycling 81.03 kilograms per person, with a population of 722,666.

The Thompson centre may not be leading in the province, but they’re experiencing some financial

wins. “We were able to reduce our operating costs by $20,000, which decreased the request to the City of Thompson. We had an increase in commercial revenue due to increased participation by business owners in the community, approximately an extra $10,000 annually,” says Thompson.

The TRC continues to increase their revenue by speaking with surrounding areas and encouraging them to start recycling.

Thompson wants the TRC to become a hub for recycling in the north. “Every year we continue to engage with more communities to try and start recycling programs in their communities so they can do the collection. Then after we can help them transport it, so we can just ask as a hub.”

Fenske congratulated the TRC for the successful year. “I just want to congratulate the recycling centre for the excellent job that you’ve done over the past year and number of years. Again highlighting Coun. [Kathy]Valentino’s comment achieving that goal of a million kilograms in regards to the changeover to the automated waste recycling pickup.

Congratulations to you on that.”

Kind people are the highlight Continued from Page 1 On Jan. 9, the cyclists headed back to Winnipeg to sort out their skis and then will head north, Weber explains. “The original plan was to cycle over to Gilliam, but we have to get to Resolute by the end of May, because the sea ice starts breaking up in June. So once we get to Resolute, we will come back to Thompson, and then just complete that part from Thompson to Gilliam once we finish.”

The two agree this Arctic Canadian project has been their hardest training project. “In South America we were able to cycle daily at best 215 kilometres, and it was

hilly. Even in the U.K. we usually did 100 kilometres, and here at best it’s 80 kilometres a day, on average though around 50 kilometres a day,” said Weber.

Their favourite part of this trip has been the people. “We were cycling close to Ashern and a guy stopped us on the road named Glen. He told us it’s Christmas Eve, so to go to his bakery and they bought us sandwiches. We went there and talked and ate. They had friends in Moosehorn, so we stayed with Mike and Diane for Christmas,” said Ameida.

Adding that even people waving at them help keep them going. “Some days

it’s tough to be out there, and when we are cycling it’s pretty lonely because we don’t cycle together, and we don’t talk. People stop and bring us soup, or hot chocolate, it gives us the little energy boost we need.” Weber agreed, saying it’s humbling to have met so many kind people.

Once the explorers are finished this Arctic training, they will continue preparations for the big expedition. No date has been set for the ultimate adventure just yet. They will be looking for a sponsor since these expeditions are costly. “We’ll try to get more sponsorship for the full journey because North Pole,

South Pole expeditions cost a hideous amount of money,” said Weber. “It’s at least $300,000 each.

The whole journey itself will be expensive.”

This project has become their life, Weber said.

They sold their house in Brazil to fund these training exercises; they quit their jobs, and drained their personal bank accounts. But for them, life is about adventure, and doing it beside someone you love makes for an even better story.

City’s new logo finally revealed to the public

With its first new logo since 1979, the City of Thompson is turning over a new leaf that includes the whole tree.

The city unveiled a new logo during the Jan. 5 council meeting. The City of Thompson will now be represented by two trees and the slogan “Our potential is unlimited.”

The city’s communications officer, Dawn Sands, spoke about the new branding strategy. “It was born out of a need to diversify our economy and to develop a strategic plan to promote Thompson.

Before the development of the Thompson Economic Diversification working group, our place branding strategy for Thompson was really at a disadvantage when it came to promoting and talking about the assets and the resources we have here.”

Vale worked in partnership with the city after the announcement of the smelter’s since-delayed closure to work toward diversifying the economy in the north. Talks took place with all the key stakeholders from the Thompson area and the outlying regions.

“This is really important because they acknowledged that in order for Thompson to develop long-term plans for sustainable growth

we needed to include our regional neighbors in the process,” said Sands.

Ryan Land, manager of corporate affairs and organizational development for Vale’s Manitoba operations, says the company is funding the place branding strategy because it is part of the Thompson Economic Diversification Working Group. (TEDWG) “To date, Vale’s direct investment in the Local and Regional Identity Action Plan (which included the place branding strategy) is approximately $200,000.”

Land says, however, that without community engagement this wouldn’t have happened. “This investment would have been much less significant without the 20,000 plus hours of community engagement and stakeholder participation that were invested by the working group and through the TEDWG process itself. The implementation of the strategy now belongs to the community and to the City of Thompson, though we continue to support it with some funding and in-kind participation.”

The brand strategy was adopted by city council in September 2013, but components had to be included in the budget, which was approved in May 2014.

Sands said the new logo and brand are just part of what TEDWG accom-

plished, including a regional infrastructure plan, the district development plan, zoning bylaws, and the asset management framework, as well as five action plans: restorative justice, education and training, housing, economic development and local and regional identity.

The Thompson brand promise – the attributes that marketing campaigns try to associate with their product - reads, “Thompson is a proud northern city. Our natural surroundings are rich with culture, history, and the spirit of the people that live here. This environment provides the ideal condition for the economic diversification and growth taking place today.

Our potential lies in our present and our future, our residents, and in our plans for this city. Our potential is unlimited.”

Sands explained to council the goals for the new place branding strategy.

“The first one is that we will lay a strong foundation in the place-branding program. Secondly that it will remain rooted in community engagement. That we will always manage and promote our brand in a strategic and proactive manner, that we will always tell the TEDWG story, and support the TEDWG projects in an ongoing manner. Land believes this new brand will help draw people into the city, and keep them here. “Thompson’s image and regional identity are especially important for us in relation to recruitment, attraction and retention. We know that Thompson is a service-rich, friendly, inclusive and dynamic city with tremendous opportunities, in the heart of the awe-inspiring boreal region, and the strategy ensures that this is the message we all portray inside and outside of our community. This is as much about a deeper, shared sense of community and regional pride, as it

is about attracting people and investment to Thompson. For Vale, Thompson’s identity is closely linked to our identity as a company.”

The new Thompson logo will be rolled out over the next three years. Sands says the new look will be incorporated as the city restocks, replaces, and repairs items with the past logo on them.

Coun. Kathy Valentino said she was looking forward to this being a project for the new council. “I’m excited that it’s something that we get to do and it’s just us and we’re moving forward with it. I know that there was work in the past but it’s kind of going to be our thing, because we’re the new council for this. I

look forward to it, and try to be at some of the events and promoting all the new stuff.”

Mayor Dennis Fenske encouraged the general public to ask questions about the new brand, and to be involved with the progress. “This is a positive bold move for this council and it’s the start of 2015.”

Sands says part of the brand strategy included setting up social media accounts under the name “This is my Thompson.”

“We encourage you to find us on social media,” she said. “Like us, share us, follow us, hashtag #mythompson. This is how we keep the conversation going, and this is how we get feedback from people.”

What is required to get a license?

• In order to apply for a dog/cat license, you must provide a certificate showing that your pet is up to date with its rabies vaccinations.

• Dogs/Cats over the age of four months must be licensed.

• If your pet isn’t old enough to be spayed/neutered you can still receive the lower cost of licensing your pet. You will need to provide a receipt from a veterinary clinic that you have prepaid for your pet to be spayed/neutered, and then you will be entitled to the lower cost of licensing your pet.

Benefits to licensing your animal: • If your dog/cat goes missing, having them licensed drastically improves your chances of getting them back. A license tag helps animal control quickly identify your pet and get him back to you safely.

• Licensing lets people know that your pet is up to date on its rabies vaccinations. A dog/cat cannot be licensed unless it is properly vaccinated. Animal control or a Good Samaritan will be much more likely to want to handle and care for your missing pet if they know that it is vaccinated.

• The cost of the license is far less than the penalty for being caught without one. If a City Official finds your pet without a license,the owner shall be liable to a fine as specified in the City of Thompson Fee and fine Schedule as it exists.

A disgrace to the RCMP uniform To the Editor: I was relaxing at home last week, watching the evening newscast on CBC Winnipeg. There was an ITeam article regarding an incident in the community of Nelson House. According to the I-Team report, an RCMP officer took a jailed intoxicated woman home to pursue a personal relationship or should I say a “one-night stand.”

The report said that the officer’s discipline was a reprimand and seven days off without pay. What a joke! It is a disgrace that an individual who wears the uniform of Canada’s finest would conduct himself in such a way.

Our government representatives MP Niki Ashton and MLA Steve Ashton must take this incident very seriously and demand that such disgraceful behavior is dealt with. I agree with Niki Ashton’s request for a full third party investigation.

I have the highest respect for Canada’s finest, but when I hear or read about incidents such as this it makes me sick. The officer and his supervisor should be dealt with under the full extent of the law. They should be stripped of the uniform and suspended for one year. At the end of the suspension they should have to re-apply for duty and retrain to be a member of Canada’s finest, the RCMP. They are there to serve and protect, but in this case they failed the community of Nelson House.

They should be dealt with under the full extent of the law, not given a slap on the hand by an internal investigation.

What they did was a disgrace to the community of Nelson House and should not be swept under the rug.

he cost of living got a little higher in Thompson as of Jan. 1, the effective date of higher water and sewer rates approved by the Public Utility Board (PUB), somewhat ironically, on Christmas Eve, since paying more for the same service seems more like the work of the Grinch that a gift from Santa Claus. Fortunately for those who went all out at Christmas and have higher than usual credit card bills to pay off, the extra pain in the pocketbook won’t take effect until the first quarterly bill of 2015 is received a few months down the road.

The minimum charge for a residence with a 15 millimetre service has gone from $81.51 to $105.67, an increase of about 30 per cent – more if you account for the fact that the minimum charge now includes only 14 cubic metres of water, down from 15 cubic metres before. A household consuming 250 cubic metres of water this year will pay $830.08, up from $687.04 in 2014, an increase of approximately 20 per cent.

In a way, the fact that rates are increasing is good

news. It means that Thompsonites are using less water, which should mean the water system has extra capacity for times when usage spikes and is not taxing the vital natural resource everyone living here – or anywhere else on Earth – relies on as much. But that’s not much comfort when it comes time to pay the bill.

Thompson’s water rates are higher than in some communities. In September, the PUB approved new water rates in Flin Flon that included, for 2014, a $65.70 minimum monthly charge for a 5/8” service, which is about 15 mm. That was about 30 per cent higher than in the previous year.

Those water rates include 6,000 Imperial gallons of water per month, which is about 27 cubic metres. That means that a Flin Flon water utility customer who never used more than the minimum would pay $788.40 per year. But they would get about 325 cubic metres of water with that, for an average cost of about $2.43 per cubic metre. A customer in Thompson using 250 cubic metres would be paying an average of about $3.32 per

cubic metre. That’s about 37 per cent more expensive.

In granting Thompson higher rates for 2015 through 2017 on an interim ex parte basis, the PUB noted that water consumption is down 30 per cent in Thompson since meters were installed in 2010.

It also said that the city’s projections were partly to blame for the 30 per cent price increase facing water utility customers this year, as a result of overestimating consumption.

On the other hand, when Thompson first started charging for water consumption in 2011, the PUB set the rates at 62 cents per cubic metre for water and 47 cents per cubic metre of wastewater, more than one-third lower than the requested rates of 97 cents for water and 77 for wastewater. That undoubtedly reduced revenue for the utility in 2011 and also gave utility customers an unrealistic picture of how much their water actually cost and made the prospect of raising rates up to where they likely should have been unpalatable for the city and the PUB.

As much as it pains the residents of Thompson, however, the principle of charging for water based on consumption instead of including the cost in taxes that go to general revenue is sound. If you want to use more water, you should be prepared to pay more, as you do for groceries or gas or electricity. And while the implementation of the water utility has not always been smooth, with hundreds of bills going unpaid for years and some residents receiving outrageously large bills that they believed did not reflect their actual usage for the period in question, there really is no other choice.

The province made it clear to the city before the utility was created that funds for a new wastewater treatment plant wouldn’t be forthcoming unless it was. And now that it is, it can’t run a deficit without prior approval from the PUB. No one likes paying more for water. But unless you plan to melt a lot of snow this winter – on a woodburning stove to avoid higher electricity bills – you don’t really have a choice.

Getting through a long, cold winter MIRANDA LEYBOURNE SPECIAL TO THE THOMPSON CITIZEN

Now that the hubbub of the holidays has passed, in Northern Manitoba we’re faced with 12 more weeks of snow, ice and cold.

You’re not alone if this type of weather has you feeling down or even depressed. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is, according to the Mayo Clinic, a “type of depression that’s related to changes in seasons.” The Mood Disorders Association of Canada says that “some people experience powerful changes to the degree that it becomes a form of clinical depression.” Some symptoms of SAD can be oversleeping, low energy, weight gain, intense cravings for carbohydrates, withdrawal from social relationships and a depressed mood. If you feel like you are suffering from SAD, please don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor. The following tips do not take the place of medical advice.

Here are some tips for getting through a long, cold winter: 1). Make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D. Did you know that most multivitamins, for children and adults, don’t contain enough Vitamin D? I recommend talking to your pharmacist or someone knowledgeable at a natural health foods store and purchasing some Vitamin D drops. I also recommend taking Omega 3 supplements.

2.) Eat properly. Avoid refined sugar and refined carbohydrates. Opt for whole-grain carbs and delicious grain options like quinoa and brown rice. Eat more lean protein, and try to eat fish at least twice a week. Avoid alcohol, which is a depressant.

Eat healthy fats like extravirgin olive oil, coconut oil and avocados.

Miranda Leybourne 3.) Exercise regularly. The rush of endorphins you get from regular cardiovascular exercise will go a long way to offset those winter blues. Exercise at least three times a week, and more if you can! Try to enjoy winter — sample snowshoeing, downhill skiing or snowboarding, cross-country skiing or skating. Yoga is a great way to reconnect with your body and focus your mind. And if you can join a group exercise class, it’s a great way to get out of the house and get connected with others.

Get enough sleep. Sleep is a huge deal. We need just the right amount for our bodies and minds to feel great.

Experts disagree on what the ideal amount of sleep is, and I believe it varies from person to person.

5.) Meditate. Don’t underestimate the power of your imagination. Find a nice guided meditation (there are plenty of them online) that takes place on a tropical island, or beside a summer lake. I recommend “My Meditation Station” by Stin Hanson, which can be found through the Podcast app on your iPhone or iPad. Try to find time to meditate once a day. Prayer also counts as meditation!

6.) Invest in a light therapy lamp. Take a look online, read reviews and invest your money wisely.

Use your unit as directed, and I believe you’ll feel a positive change. Make sure that you’re not on any medications that will give you a light sensitivity reaction.

7.) Travel. Don’t worry if you can’t afford to hop on a plane to Cuba. Just go to your local library!

Check out a travel book or read a novel that takes place in a lush, warm location – anything that can take you away from the cold and into a new place, even if it’s just between the covers of a book.

8.) Get involved in your community. Join a group. Go to church! Even though it can be a pain to warm up your car, or take the bus to get where you need to go, feeling connected really helps. I take my daughter to a play group at least once a week, and we go to church on Sunday. In fact, just today in church I was reminded of the beauty and glory of winter.

9.) Above all, stay positive! “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” Genesis 8:22. “It was You who set all the boundaries of the earth; You made both summer and winter.” Psalm 74:17.

These verses from the Bible remind us that there is a time for everything on this earth. And though it might seem a long time away, winter will pass, and spring will come again.

It’s been a year since the Phoenix transitional housing within Men are Part of the Solution (MAPS) opened their doors and Oswald Sawh, board chair for MAPS, says the transitional housing is just one part of the successful year for the organization.

“As we evolved we got into the transitional housing, which when you look at it, it’s symbolic of a move towards more advanced services to men,” said Sawh. “We have counselling, and we now have transitional housing.”

The only problem is the waiting list for that counselling, Sawh explains.

“We have an extremely long waiting list and the challenge is we are not getting to all the people that are asking for our service.

We want to look at finding ways to help even if it’s helping get information out there.”

Currently, Michelle Nichol, director and clinician for MAPS, is the only counsellor for the clients.

“I have our life coach from the transitional housing that co-facilitates groups with me, but that’s basically it,” says Nichol.

Sawh says with only one counsellor it’s hard to help the outlying communities, which often call MAPS for help. “One of the biggest challenges is there are a lot of people that will phone her [Michelle Nichol] outside of Thompson to get options on some kind of counselling. We’re looking at options like video conferencing.”

Another hope for the new year is more funding so a men’s forum can start in Thompson, where men can work together to resolve personal issues. “Years ago we had the men’s forum.

We want to go back to that in the new year. The intention of the forum is, once a month anyone can come, regardless if they’re a MAPS client or not, and present information on gambling issues, healthy relationships and so on.”

Sawh continues by saying it’s important Nichol and he stay in contact with past clients. “We want to make sure what we are doing is creating a long-term difference. It’s the whole idea about a follow-up.

Seeing once they’ve completed the 20 sessions, to see how they’re doing a year from now, two years from now. We want to tie

that back into the men’s forum.”

Once the men’s forum is underway past clients could be guest speakers, suggests Nichol. “We’ve had guest speakers come in from past groups that have done that, and the men actually like that and I’ve encouraged men to come in and speak. The only challenge is they’re waiting for this men’s forum to open up.”

Sawh says MAPS will be applying again for some funding, which could make the men’s forum a reality for 2015. “We applied last year for one thing through the federal government, but we were turned down.

I think they thought it was a good idea, but there was a lot of competition. We’ve been invited again this year to apply to the same pot.

We’re hoping to be successful this year.”

This year the men took part in a debris cleanup on the Burntwood River, and Sawh says this helped MAPS create a plan for future hands-on projects for their clients. “We want to be able to establish some sort of a social enterprise where we can have things on an ongoing basis.

Things to keep them active,

get some experience, and get some money as well.”

Sawh continued by saying this potential program could include a number of things. “I don’t like the idea of jumping from one contract to the other because there’s too much of a gap between sometimes.

What we need is something five days a week, so we’re looking at this social enterprise, whether it be painting, snow clearing, crafting, something under the Phoenix name.”

Nichol says they’re hoping to build a garage and a workshed at the Phoenix house in 2015 to help the men acquire and develop new skills.

The future of MAPS will include expansions, new projects and new programs, but Nichol wants residents to remember these men are just like any other Thompson resident. “At the end of the day when you really look at the person versus what addiction they have, you find out they aren’t that much different than you or I. Life has given them a hit, and some people need some more help to get back on their feet. They have the same types of wants and needs that we all do.”

Operation Red Nose completes 16th year in Thompson

As Operation Red Nose finished another year of volunteer-based drives, Terri-Lynn Turton, co-ordinator for Operation Red Nose (ORN) looked back at this year. “We could have done better but most nights only had one or two teams because we were so short on volunteers.”

With the final numbers being tallied, Thompson saw around 10 volunteers every night. A total of 124 residents volunteered their time for drives.

Even with the smaller numbers, Thompson still managed to drive 279 vehicles home after a night of drinking, ensuring there would be less drinking and driving during the holidays.

Drives took place the last weekend of November, every Friday and Saturday of December and on New Year’s Eve. This year 10 communities in the province took part in ORN. By community, Thompson placed fifth in total rides. Winnipeg came in first with 1,264 rides. For volunteers the city placed second to last with Shilo coming in last with 106 volunteers. For total money raised Thompson placed right in the middle. Winnipeg raised the most with $31,012.97 and Shilo the least with $1,261.90.

Last year ORN raised $9,988.81 in donations, just a few dollars short of their $10,000 goal. This year the total amount in donations was $4,219.16.

Turton says this year was the 16th year ORN has been in Thompson. “We will keep ORN in the community as long as we have volunteers to run it.”

Anyone can volunteer for ORN, even if you don’t have a licence. Volunteers are needed to take calls and drivers are also needed for the trips. Next year, forms will be available throughout the city to fill out and hand in before the season begins.

Every year ORN donates the money raised to different community groups.

Last year the Society for Manitobans with Disabilities, the Troy Anand Fund with the Thompson Community Foundation and Albert’s Fund all received money.

The Wapanohk Community School also received $3,500 towards their breakfast program, the Boys & Girls Club of Thompson received $3,500, the Thompson Air Cadets were given $3,000, $2,000 went to the Rotary Park development association, and the Little C hockey team received $3,000.

This announcement of what organizations will be receiving money will come near the end of the month, Turton says. “They won’t be releasing the groups we give our money to until the wrap-up at the end of January for all volunteers.”

That is also when the

draw for Calm Air flight for two will take place. Everyone who used the service,

or volunteered for the service has had their names put into a draw.

Thompson Public Library: New year, new reading habits

Every year, countless people set New Year’s resolutions in an effort to reshape their lives in one way or another, and many people set reading goals for themselves. If you were one of those people that decided that you wanted to read more often, or read more varied material, the staff members at the Thompson Public Library are here to help you.

Reading has many benefits: it lowers stress levels, teaches you empathy, boosts your memory and improves focus, amongst others.

As people get older and busier, they often fall out of the habit of reading on a regular basis that they had as a child. If you’ve decided you want to work on your reading habits, we have a number of resources that can help you.

Not sure what you want to read next? The library subscribes to a website called Novelist, which you can find on our website – www. thompsonlibrary.com – under the resources tab.

Novelist is a website that you can type in an author or a book that you already have read and loved and find similar authors or titles, or read-alikes as they are referred to on the site.

Have an author that you love and haven’t read in a while? Take a look at www.fantasticfiction. co.uk; it is a comprehensive database with information on over 350,000 books. There you can find series information, publication dates, biographies of authors and co-authors and much more. If you find a book on the database that you want to read, head on over to our catalogue at www.thompsonlibrary. com and click on “Online Catalogue” and you can search for the title you are looking for. We can also do a search for you at the front desk if you come into the library.

Hat trick powers peewee King Miners to tournament championship

Captain Robert Dudas scored three goals, including the game-winner, as the peewee A Thompson King Miners captured the A pool championship at the Prince-Berscheid tournament with a 4-2 win over the peewee A Cross Lake Islanders Jan. 11 at C.A. Nesbitt Arena.

Dudas opened the scoring in the first period, then gave Thompson its second lead of the game with a third period goal just 17 seconds after Kennedy Cummings scored on a power play to tie the game 2-2. Cross Lake had taken the lead

in the second period on goals by Dixon Thomas and Treyton Monias.

Dudas completed his hat trick with eight minutes left to play in the third period.

The King Miners opened the tournament with a 9-0 win over the peewee A Norway House North Stars on Jan. 9, then knocked off the Spilt Lake Eagles 17-1 before losing 4-2 to the Islanders in their other round-robin games on Saturday.

Thompson goaltender Justin Paulic was traded Jan. 6 from the Moose Jaw Warriors to the Victoria Royals of the Western Hockey League in a three-player deal that also included a swap of draft picks.

Paulic, Alexey Sleptsov and a sixth-round pick in this year’s bantam draft went to the Royals in exchange for Axel Blomqvist, a third-round pick in this year’s draft and a fifth-round pick in 2017.

Paulic, 19, was in his third season as a Warrior and has appeared in 18 games this season, compiling a 6-8-1-1 record with one shutout, a goalsagainst average (GAA) of 3.5 and a save percentage of .895. He made 56 appearances in the 2013-14 season, posting a GAA of 3.65 and an .891 GAA with a 12-29-3-5 record.

He appeared in 57 games as a rookie in 2012-13, compiling a 21-24-4-5 record with one shout, an .899 save percentage and a 3.15 GAA. The team recognized him with the the Warriors Booster Club Unsung Hero award and the Vanier Collegiate Scholastic Achievement Award after he started the last 26 games of that season following an injury to fellow netminder Daniel Wapple.

The new year got off to a rough start for the Norman Northstars, who hosted the Winnipeg Wild Jan. 10-11 and ended up on the losing end of a pair of lopsided scores.

Eight Wild players got goals in the Jan. 10 contest, a 9-1 game that saw Winnipeg score six times in the first two periods and then three more times in the third after William Lutz got the Northstars on the board 1:37 into the final frame. Shots in the game were 42-20 for the Wild and Mark Steeves made 33 saves in net for Norman.

Bryce Horning had both goals for the Northstars on Sunday, opening the scoring with a power play goal in the first period before Kevin Jakisch, Josh Curtis and Dawson Martin replied before the first intermission en route to an 8-2 win. Horning’s second, also scored with the man advantage made it a 4-2 game after Martin’s second had put the Wild up by three.
