Polar bear sighted near Leaf Rapids BY MATTHIAS J. JOHNSON LOCAL JOURNALISM INITIATIVE REPORTER, THOMPSON CITIZEN

Being this far North on a global scale many expect a polar bear sighting to be a regular affair, even myths of having these exotic beasts as pets may come from the opinion of other countries but in reality the rarity of encountering these massive bears is an experience few obtain. Leaving Leaf Rapids for their country home nearing 7:15PM Helga Buntane tells the unexpected story of a wildlife encounter on January 8. Only 20 minutes out of town Buntane was driving her two grandkids from school when the 12 year old shouted from the back seat that she saw something. “The scream nearly sent me off the road” Said Buntane, “I thought something was wrong and it scared me”. The scream caused Buntane to slam on the breaks nearly causing a wreck when she soon realized her granddaughter was pointing at something up ahead. “It was on an adjacent road up ahead and he (The bear) was still behind a lot

of trees when she (Granddaughter) saw it” Before too long a large polar bear came out from behind the trees and crossed over the road in front of them. “All the kids and even my son were absolutely ecstatic, while I was on the other hand terrified. They kept telling me ‘drive closer grandma, drive closer’ but I felt like we were close enough!” Buntane said that her son was also in the car and actually exited the vehicle to get a better photo. “I think he was doing it out of payback for me not driving closer. He just said ‘they could tear through this car anyway, mom” said Buntane. After the bear had disappeared into the bush alongside Range Road 487, they tried to upload the pictures but there wasn’t any cell service. Buntane’s son, who was once a photographer happened to not have his better camera on hand and instead got the best he could with his smartphone. This incredible sighting left the family in jitters as they said they’ll carry that experience forever. Though terrified Buntane said that
